His father was a jazz pianist in a trio called Prince Rodgers, hence his name. So from a young age he played piano and guitar. Plus he was a known workaholic, i don't think he had a healthy sleep pattern. The insane thing about Prince is he did it all, arrange, write, compose, dance ,act etc, just everything. Some can dance , some can sing, some can wirte, some can act, he just did it all. If people like his music doesn't reallhy matter to me, as long as they understand what a one of a kind artist he was. Hope you hit 1k soon!

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar Yean, no problem. Yeah, the story is semi autobiografic. His father was a very strict Christian man at home, but then would play jazz gigs in stripclubs at night. You see a lot of that paradox in Princes work.

When you see Paisley Park, it'll make sense to you. He was match fit because he just played all the time. He barely slept so it was like he had more days in a week than a normal person. Another thought about his timing... He wrote everything and he performed a great deal of it himself in the studio. He would teach the musician and then rehearse them to death... So he knows everything that is happening as clear as day. That's how he gets his performances turned up up to 11 so often.

Re time management, Prince had an incredible work ethic plus relentless energy. Although blessed with an amazing natural talent (he could have a fully formed pop song written in 20 minutes) he would also 'out work' anyone around him. He was also a master of the studio, producing all his own albums (including his first at 19/20yrs old!!) I remember Eric Leeds (his saxophonist) saying how in a session he would be working the board and an assistant engineer would just 'burn out' and another would be wheeled in while Prince just kept on working'! I'm also fairly sure he'd written and demoed the track '1999' during the night AFTER having performed a concert and the rest of the band were sleeping! The guy was on a different level.

Prince was literally a child prodigy, it was evident from an early age he had enormous talents and gifts. Unlike us mere mortals who struggle a lifetime to play one instrument proficiently. Some individuals are blessed musically, Prince was more than blessed. You could say that he was a musical genius who we will never see again in our lifetimes .. especially, taking into account that children are playing musical instruments less often, but rely heavily on modern technology rather than pure talent.

He always said on interviews he was inspired by Santana, but a lot of people hear Hendrix in his playing. Also - obviously - he was inspired by the funk artists from the 60's and 70's (especially James Beown and Sky Stone). Also he taught himself to play the instruments, and people around him say he never slept. I guarantee, the deeper you go down this Prince rabbit hole, the more amazed you will be. An interviewer asked him what he would do if he couldn't play music - he said that was impossible because "I am music" - the more I listen to and learn about him, the more I believe that to be an accurate statement...

Great reaction! I had not seen this video. The first song is Joy in Repetition. The second is Anotherloverholenyohead, and the third is Peach. This is one of the best versions of Peach I have heard. The woman in the first song is one of the Twinz, his dancers from the Super Bowl, the Play that Funky Music video and other performances around that time. He actually performed this version of Anotherloverholenyohead at a “press conference” before the Super Bowl halftime show he did in February 2007. I did not see the drummer but he had another female drummer named Cora Coleman Dunham who played with him for the Super Bowl, through 2008 (including the cover of Creep at Coachella in the summer of 2008) - two of my favorite performances.

There's some great insight from Peggy McCreary (his engineer) at Sunset Sound before Paisley Park was built. She said that the songs were in his head and he would just lay down the tracks one by one playing all the instruments and singing lead and backing. He didn't use a click track, the timing was in his head. Once he started a song, he wouldn't stop until it was finished. He was a beast in the 80's-- not only was he recording too many songs for Warner Bros to handle -- but also put together protégé acts where he would record all the songs including a lead vocal for them to copy. Some of these bands were: The Time, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, The Family, Madhouse, Jill Jones. In addition he was giving away songs for established artists. I think the woman is one of the Twinz dancers (Maya & Nandy) -- he was a Gemini so it's fitting.

His rehearsals could be anywhere from 6-12 hrs long every day. Sound check was usually 2 hours, then there would be impromptu aftershows at small clubs that would go on into the early hours of the morning. Oh and of top of that he would record more songs for his next album during rehearsals. For example the follow up to Purple Rain was released just two weeks after that tour ended because some of those songs were initially tracked during rehearsals. It’s safe to say Prince thought sleeping was a waste of his time. He’s like the Batman of musicians lol, he dedicated his life to recording and performing as much as possible while he was alive. Unfortunately, I think that’s what led to his death. He overworked himself and became dependent on painkillers.

Thank you for another great reaction! This was during the 21 Nights in London residency at the O2 Arena (2007), I may have been there that night! It's a shame that the visuals aren't too great given that it was apparently pro shot and then some clips put onto his website at the time....A lot of these songs are played in darkness. As someone else has mentioned, the lady on vocals is one of his back-up dancers (the Twins) who were on the "Play that Funky Music" reaction video you did. The band with a horn section that included Maceo Parker, is the same as per the "Creep" reaction video at Coachella. I think people have missed the cover of "Rock Lobster" by the B52's...so it's 4 songs here...Joy in Repetition, Anotherloverholeinyohead Rock Lobster, and Peach. People have always said that the ultimate live version of this song is from an after show in 2002, which only seems to exist on crowd shot footage: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MIY839TGU-U.html This was then mixed etc and released officially as ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bBUFWnaKom8.html It was always hard to pin down Prince on influences, however, he often cited Sonny T (Thompson) who played Bass in his NPG band and whom he grew up with as a huge influence as a child. The light Blue Strat he often used was was actually named by him as "Sonny" in homage to Sonny T, because he used to have a guitar just like it when they were growing up. In terms of non-Prince reactions...would love your take on Santana's Europa Live in London 1976...I note to refer to space and time a lot in reactions....this to me is incredible and energising! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SVI7ZDDQXKA.html

The young lady is either Maya McClean or Nandy McClean (known as The Twinz). They were his backing dancers for a significant chunk of the 2000s decade. This looks to be a medley of Joy In Repetition, into Anotherloverholenyohead with some Rock Lobster, into Peach. The solo for this song that makes everyone go crazy is from an aftershow in 2002. His solo there was one of the few live cuts released during his life and was concrete evidence of his guitar abilities for us to prove to folks! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MIY839TGU-U.html He's a bit more cohesive there as this clip feels like he is filling time before getting to the solo for Joy In Repetition. And I think I know why... Prince did several residencies and there were times that he'd start a show and the sound might not be exactly where he had left it the previous performance. I witnessed this a couple of times in 2007 in London. He'd cuss out the sound director a bit and then he'd use Joy In Repetition as a way to soundcheck on the spot. Plenty of room for the levels to be sorted before he tore the guitar up. This clip looks like it is from one of the London 2007 shows. He's entertaining but the guitar work is far from his best. Sounds disjointed and a sloppy. You picked up on one of the things I love about his shows. They were seamless. He kept the songs rolling with no downtime... A well-drilled band and a stellar lineup.

He is teaching the song to The Revolution (the Purple Rain band) during rehearsals. Most songs went through that band, with decisions on giving them away coming after. The song itself is a scintillating groove. A wonderful lyric that is very clever and evocative ("a Robin sings a masterpiece unheard"). But to hear him talk through how to lay the song gives an insight into how he had all this already worked out. Either he had it in his head or he had already recorded the song himself in the studio and was merely using the band to be a live extension of himself.

Prince used a lot of subtle signals to the band to indicate... well, a lot of things. When his first backing band The Revolution reformed to tour after his passing to celebrate his music, they said they found it very hard because they were lost without his signaling. Prince said early in his career that he wanted to be able to command musicians to the music like James Brown. Before a tour, there would be a rehearsal, but every show could be completely different with alternate renditions, single verses medleing to other songs, whhile the next night you'd get the full song, a different setlist. Part way through the show, judging by the crowds reaction, he'd apparenttly change the set list as they went along. Obviously during the reheasals there would be a plan for this, somehow. But there was always a lot of freestyle when it comes to soloing and the band would rely on signals. He appeared on a US TV Show (I can't remember which), the horn player performed his solo in the wrong part but the whole band just went with it. The song was musicolgy. I can't find the link, but the horn player was either greg boyer or maceo parker. Both performed solos during the show and it was back in 2004 so my memory is a bit foggy.

Very interesting Chris! As a long time working musician they would have had to have been at their best every night not just to play well, but perform as rehearsed but also to be constantly watching for his cues. Amazing!

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar It blew my mind when I heard the band in various interviews since he passed... but none of them have said how it worked. Just that working with him made them a better musician. In {I think} "The Sunday Show" Interview, they said we know all the songs there's no need for reheasals. No idea to what point but I only know what I've seen and what was said.

He was 100% SELF-TAUGHT, on guitar and at least 26 other instruments, not including his vocals. Most everything that he recorded in studio was just him on all instruments and vocals, producing, arranging, etc., with just one engineer. He worked night and day and likely will be proven one of the most prolific artist ever when they’ve finally gotten through all of the music he had in a vault at his studio/home that was unreleased. And then there’s all of the music he wrote for others and some he released under pseudonyms.
@YesYouCANPlayGuitar
@YesYouCANPlayGuitar Год назад
When you say 100% self taught, do you mean that at no time did no one ever sit down with him with a guitar and show him anything? I'm not arguing he is a phenom, just wanted to some clarity when people make that claim...

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar He first taught himself how to play piano on his father’s upright left behind after his father left their home. He wrote his first song on that piano at age 7. It was called “Funk Machine.” He said that once he understood the piano, he was able to use that to teach himself guitar. The first song he listened to and copied/mimed to learn was Proud Mary
@nobodyatall3068
@nobodyatall3068 Год назад
…by Ike and Tina. He was said to spend several hours every day by himself in the music room of his middle school teaching himself to play by ear - that is, by listening to music and copying it. By age 13 or 14, he was already playing in a band and had an acumen for the guitar as well as keys and drums. He was a very introverted child and spent much of his young childhood years alone with instruments. Now, to be clear…
@nobodyatall3068
@nobodyatall3068 Год назад
of course, he was exposed to school music teachers, but all of them have said that he pretty much knew HOW to play before they met with him and that their teaching relationship with Prince mostly consisted of discussing music theory, giving him space in their rooms so he could spend time alone with the instruments and providing Prince with new material so he could challenge himself to play. He never learned how to read music and never did read it up until his passing. He did, however, state that he remained throughout his life a constant student and always picked things up from the various musicians that he surrounded himself with. Both of his parents were musicians but he never had any formal training and his father (his mother didn’t play any instruments) wouldn’t even let him touch his piano as a child, let alone teach him how to play it. He was only able to get at the piano after his father left home, at which point Prince was a very small child (pre-K).

Prince was not really motivated by money. his art and how he felt was more important. he was driven by his art, his freedom. there are many stories of him putting in 36 hour sessions, recording. he lived for this. if he was motivated by Money he would have been far wealthier, he had the material but that was not his way. the story of the album after Purple Rain is interesting. sells 25 million copies etc, so record lable expects Purple Rain 2, but he gives them an experimental, psychedelic album 'Around The World In A Day' (he was listening to The Beatles at the time and he actually wanted to release the album just the wa the released Sgt Peppers (i.e no singles), but they made his release singles. One story goes the execs are sitting arund this large table, Prince is there sniffing a flower, as they are getting angrier as the hear this 'Purple Rain 2'. he was about his freedom. His guitar style....Santana and Sly for sure. he was ofcourse influenced by other obvious artists, but for me Santana. oh by the way you heard of Anna Calvi?

Not my favourite version of JIR, there are better audio versions, a couple on video. Isnt the Floyd Rose a bit old school now? Regular Fender tremolo don't do the same dive bombs or hammer-ons but Wilkinson (if I recall) are decent. Its been a while since my guitar playing!! I know some say with Floyd, if one string breaks it knocks them all out but i thought that's the case with all bars. This was a big topic back in the day with Prince fans!!! Especially as his own style didn't really need a bar... He didn't use one on Purple Rain !!!
