Yes! It's a conversation between him and God and he did that a lot in his career. He found loopholes to do so cuz back in the day, you couldn't talk to/about God in mainstream music, so his way around that was by making the lyrics, like the ones in Breakdown, sound like he's singing about a relationship he's in and lots and lots of metaphors and he did this right up until his death

So glad you chose this song because I have broken it down as well. I agree with you and I love the clever wordplay of this song. Things I notice: Pasta is only one letter off from the word "past". Simmering is often used as a term for thinking. When he says you are off somewhere being free I think he is talking to himself about the time he was fighting for his freedom from his contract with W.B., fighting for his freedom to produce himself, maybe even just to create without much need of assistance. All of that freedom cuts out a lot of people; not realizing then where those decisions would leave him in the future. I put the birth of Prince at Purple Rain but I like your thought on that connection it has with the memoir. Prince used to celebrate his birthday with shows where he was with his bandmates and fans. There seems to be regret about putting birthdays aside. Maybe even a bit bitter? I see this song as a conversation with himself. One more-- the line about being everybody's dream and still be somebody's wife: How can you please everybody and still be faithful to just one? It may be about his relationship with God. The faithful are referred to as "The Bride", thus the use of the word "wife". Great analysis. It's always an education.

Prince was a very deep thinker and a spiritual man (especially after becoming a Jehovah’s Witness). He was an amazing wordsmith and of course musician/vocalist. A gift. But we all know that. 💜💜

I've always thought that this song was self reflection. How he didn't live his life to it's full potential outside of being "Prince". How could he know what his wife could be eating because he didn't have one. June is a lonely song, nevertheless its masterful and suspenseful. 💜

The song “June” was about his loneliness as being the cost of fame. He doesn’t feel appreciated musically in this modern age. Now all he does is waits….(which reminds me of another song about Prince’s loneliness called, “Noon Rendezvous”. ) “sitting in this cafe, waiting on my baby..”

I think maybe Prince wanted just a regular life but because he was Prince he just was never going to be able to have it because his life is sooo complicated. With great success comes great responsibility. I think he always felt that. I saw an interview where he was asked what do you want people to know about you. He said it's all in his music he is all there. He also said when he was young he looked for the edge just to go there. Prince was constantly evolving changing. Going to listen NOW again.

I think people tend to "pigeon hole" Prince by what he once said or did. If they are paying any kind of attention, they will notice he was always evolving and growing, not only as a musician, and entertainer, but as a person, and a man. The growth is heard in his music and interviews. I love all his music, but it is his growth as a man that I love the most. As we age and mature and have a lot of life experience behind us, we tend to view life differently. Things that once were so very important to us when we were younger, somehow no longer matter as we age. And, things we might not have given much thought previously, seem to consume our attention. In life we make decisions based on what we know and think at the time, but in retrospect we realize our folly. Its just all part of the process of maturing, and Prince was miles above the rest, not only as a musician, but as a thinker and a believer in the Word. The world IS much darker without him in it, and I miss his light. Rest in Power Prince!

Prince was always about reinventing himself and his sound. Art Official Age, Plectrumelectrum and Hit 'N' Run phase 1 were the freshest and most unique he'd sounded in years. It truly felt like a new Prince with new purpose. I love the track June. Classic track, up there with his best.

He didn't believe in time, that's true!!! He's totally on record for saying that and that's also a big part of why he didn't celebrate birthdays. When you hit certain ages Society tends to stereotype your age with certain things that should be happening in that phase of your life. He knew just like Einstein that time doesn't exist. It's not linear like our society practices. Age is a state of mind and Prince knew that very, very well...

He’s documented saying it and even singing about it, but that doesn’t mean that idea stayed with him. It’s easier to believe time is an illusion when it’s not staring you in the face.

This song is about is about second " wife " Manuela Testolini, she was 4 months pregnant, when she married Eric Beret July 2011. When Prince was deeply loved in with Manuela Testolini who had resemblance to " Denise Matthew." Freddie Mercury and Prince are the most " complicated" humans in the world to understand, but the world " greatest musical talents".

I don't think it's about a past relationship. I think it was about a current relationship, but the woman he was with was out doing her own thing. The song is about him daydreaming about her, while she's out doing her own thing. He's preparing a meal alone, because the person he's supposed to be with isn't there. The line about how can you be somebody's fantasy and somebody's wife implies that there might be some infidelity, or at least that the woman is some kind of public figure/sex symbol, which makes him feel like she doesn't belong just to him. To top it all off, it's his damn birthday and she's out doing her own thing without him.

This was excellent! He mentioned he used visualization (in his book) to get what he wanted but maybe he was visually seeing himself getting older and where it might lead him, will he be like all the rest of the old rocker n rollers, or will he just lay low and live out the rest of his life, in a place, no one will bother him?....his songs run really deep,...Ive always tried to figure this one out myself, glad you did!! it was helpful! I think he still had Denis Matthews on his mind. The Beautiful Ones was written for her at that time and it ended with it being his books title. Its like MC Hammer said about himself, Prince, Vanity, Michael.....when you grow up in Church you tend to lose your way in music. Prince thought out loud in lyrics.

The general belief about the song "The Beautiful Ones" being about Dennise Mathews seems to make sense in the context of Purple Rain and her disappearance. But Prince fired her from the production according to Alex Hahn's book, "The Rise of Prince." In the chapter "Dreams Come True," Hahn states that "The Beautiful Ones" is about his attraction to Suzannah Melvoin who had a boyfriend when he met her, and Prince was furious and jealous. He used that energy to write the song which would express The Kid's jealousy of Morris concerning Appalonnia in that famous scene in "Purple Rain." Prince was actually posing the questions, "Do you want him? or do you want me? cause I want you to Suzannah because he wanted her to leave her then-current boyfriend for him. I totally agree that Prince thought out loud in his lyrics. If you can put a song on his timeline, you could tell what was going on in his life. I see his songs like a diary that he often seems to feign that they were about his life to throw people off the trail. But those words didn't come out of thin air. He was very clear on taking ownership of his songs so they must have been his thoughts from his emotional experience and put to paper by his hand and sung with his voice. They were too moving and personal to be anyone else's.

I hadn't thought about this song in terms of Debise Matthews before. But I have often wonderd about the nostalgic essence of rock n roll love affair in terms of her; im just a few years younger than Prince when he died, and its weird how much age makes you start think way back to stuff from decades ago. Maybe both those songs have a little bit of that going on.

@@PrincesFriend That's right, How would I know?how would I know...Maybe this masterpiece was made for each and everyone of us; a time to reflect on ourselves in a season of our lives while the pasta simmers on the stove. My mother passed in Sept of 2019. She would always tell me if I had a question about things that happen in life and wanting to understand, she would always say basically whayt our beloved Prince said: "Makes no sense now, but it will soon."Only my mom said one day. It is all about the journey of life an realizing one day we all self actualize and wonder was I my "best self?" if not, wake up and make what time we have left our best. Didn't mean to ramble, but this song is very humbling if you listen to what Prince left us in this song💜united in purple we stand. I wish you all heaven☀️🌑⭐⭐⭐

Also, the title, 'June' being the month of his birthday but, Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate birthdays. He apparently liked his birthday because Apollonia said he would call her every year on his birthday. She would wish him 'happy birthday' and he'd respond, "I don't celebrate birthdays.' I've known JW's quite well. I think this is his work around to celebrating his birthday; celebrating himself. I'm so glad I finally discovered this song. It's amazing and I'm obsessed.

Talking about Prince dealing with being Prince & how that impacts relationships (not just romantic). I had this dream once a very long time ago that Michael Jackson visited me & I got to play b-ball & my local coart with him. It was meaningful for him because he got to be a man & not be Michael Jackson for that moment & enjoy a game we all love with people who genuinely just want to play a game with each other & have fun. I think these celebrities would appreciate those kinds of things & that's why Paisley Park was special to Prince. PP had an indoor b-ball coart. I hope he had other men in his life that helped him have those times where it's not about Prince or the music, sometimes it's about talking on the phone with your buddy about some intriguing video game & ur trying to figure out something about the story line. Or talking about last nights game. How much u wanna bet he had football or basketball cards? Heck I'd of traded with him. I hope MJ also had other men like that in his life. When I say "men like that" I'm not talking about a type of man. I'm talking about meaningful male relationships.

I love Hit and Run and his later works. I think that the opioids were giving him bouts of depression and that was difficult for him because he lived his life in control. Still missing him with great sadness 😢

Love this series! GREAT video! I agree with much of your interpretation and very cool that you unlocked the key of being "born way too late"! That always confused me. Here's my interpretation, which incorporates some of yours. It's his birthday and he's using "cooking pasta" as his present. Then he get's lost in a stream of thoughts about himself-- about not being able to connect with people because of his fame; that what he wants to talk about is too big/deep for most people; how he is isolated, alone and he can't do everyday things; about his purpose; and about how he's now just waiting for his own death. Feeling sorry for himself. To me the Richie Havens reference was that if he was playing with Richie Havens, Prince could have lived longer. Havens lived to 72 years old. Then, referencing the pasta is burning, means that while he was worrying about all those things, he missed what was going on in his present. It's his birthday and he's not dead yet, The moon in general represents the ebb and flow of our existence with the full moon offering profound energies. So, ultimately, he still has time and energy to do the important things he wants. 💜

How did I end up here? Lol, I was looking up a lyric to see which song it goes to, when I ended up here. But then you started talking about June. So I came here to see your thoughts on this song. My take is that he and this woman cooled down, (no longer exciting to have sex) used to be together, but this woman has been gone so much being free, having lunch with someone else??? So someone Prince knows, (let’s face it, he knows a lot of people) told him, so this person spotted his wife or GF having lunch with someone else. Also, it was Princes birthday, and she was off having lunch with someone else. Now he’s at home with pasta burning on the stove (making his own lunch) playing sad break up music, on repeat, waiting… I agree he knew his life was closing, and looking at himself being alone, lonely.

Surprised that you didn't get the Woodstock line right away. It's been said before by others that he was born to early and he should have been at Woodstock. So, if he was born in the 40's instead of the 50's he would have been on stage at Woodstock. Great vid by the way.

I allowed myself to see the song as infidelity. Must have been his birthday. He's home cooking and the cheating partner is out on a lunch date. (Well not really....a sex encounter. How else could you escape? ). Ur a young woman who wants a toyboy...not the old routine. Man left at home now realizing roles have reversed. Can't question their actions. What you did to another man's wife. How time flies. Damn, in my era..... I lived that life. (In my head can't stir the pot; it only smells like shit)....infidelity in a nut shell. Thank you for this. I need another point of view from someone who knows Prince’s music well! PS, your singing of the line sounded nice! 👏. I personally think this song is about his second wife, Manuela. She had a cameo on Mayte’s VH1 show “Hollywood exes” and the episode where Manuela showed up was shown in June. I’m imagining Prince was curious of the show. Maybe he had his notebook in hand to write anything down litigious, and then he saw Manuela. In my opinion he was completely over Mayte, but he had unresolved issues with Manuela. She wasn’t in the spotlight, and easy to avoid knowing what happened to her. On the show Mayte and Manuela were eating. Thus “what did you have for lunch today?” She is also Italian and who knows if she made him pasta 🍝 often (now I’m diving into stereotypes and I apologize 🤭). He contemplates why she entered his World because he didn’t know why she was in there just to leave him. Maybe seeing Manuela happier without him made him realize he was probably the reason for the demise of the relationship. Manuela can have a family with someone else, and seemed very happy in the show. Truth hit him and he feels like a failure. I don’t know why their marriage ended. Maybe he didn’t either? 🍝 🍴 🔥 one caveat is that the show aired on 2012 and this song was recorded 2015. But just because it was recorded years later doesn’t mean the song wasn’t ruminating in his head years earlier

Pasta cooking on the stove in June! Those song words sometimes come into my head when im cooking dinner on the stove, particularly pasta on the stove.! "how can you be somebody's dream and still be somebody else's wife?" I think this means obviously to me anyway, that he is a pop star and someone's dream/iconic star on the stage yet in real-life he is just a normal man doing normal things, ie, someone else's wife, just normal. I think the line 'our bodies got used to each other' just means when people get married, it changes and they get familiar like soul mates.

This song also has a sinister tone to it as well, and if you look at it in context to the rest of his life and how his life would end, it is a whole lot deeper. the only way he could escape the shady dealings and shady characters that had come into his life was to slip into a reverie like this.

Thank you for this breakdown/analysis. I think you nailed it. I was struggling with many parts of it, but hearing your take made me feel like you really understood his stream of consciousness and I now feel like I have clarity. The other thing is in each and everyone song I really wonder which woman had him in this this state of longing. He was obviously human but he was so sexy and.......................... that I never could quite see anyone having him in that state.

It’s only natural to try to figure out who he’s talking about but I purposefully avoid that part of it myself. For me, you gotta focus on the music. If it was only meant for “her” then we would have never heard it. So why did he put it out for everyone? Prince was an enigma. 😂

I always find myself viewing/commenting on your videos randomly (I hope you don't mind lol) I like your interpretations of the lyrics Just some extra thoughts that go along with what you were saying. -I remember there was something that I heard and I cannot remember who the man was, but he mentioned that Prince just asked him if he believed in Jesus out of the blue. So it does seem like Prince is the type to skip "how's the weather?" and go straight to the big spiritual questions. -I actually saw a compilation of Prince interviews and he mentioned to Tavis Smiley about the "time illusion" but he also said it helps him to not remember that he's 40 years old. He'll always be young as long as he can jump off pianos, and seeing some of Prince's later concerts with 3rdeyegirl on RU-vid, I don't think I saw a lot of piano jumping or splits. -Also in most interviews he seems detatched from what he would perceive as shallow questions that they ask him, and especially since they tend to bounce from question to question. I always notice there's a certain way he's spoken too as well as if he's exempt from ever even conceiving the idea of normalcy. Like "Do you even own a sweat suit?" When he did interviews with Tavis he seemed a lot more comfortable to talk more since he and Tavis did have deep discussions off camera. Their rapport definitely shows up on camera.

Me and 1 other person thinks this song is about a woman, as so many of his songs are, when I first heard it, I imagined a day, prince was at a lovers home, her husband went every June to a gathering of some sort, she was making pasta and started loving on him as the pasta burned, he knew what she had for lunch-him. But she had to leave for her birthday outing, he couldn't go and be seen with her, she was famous, he wished he was younger to be a better fit for her as I'm sure she was young, he realized how it felt when he loved on one and left her to record, so he knows someone is looking at her with lust as he has to wait for her to come back, maybe some regret, he should of put more time in with his ladies. I remember hearing one of prince's friends saying he saw a beautiful girl in the room and couldn't take his eyes off her, then prince walked over and said that's my wife. Being on the other side for a change. I wish he would of gave more time to manuela, he could of kept her to this day. Love the song June.

JUNE really strikes a cord of loneliness, regret and introspection of his life that P just recorded. The problem with breaking down this song is that P was (respectfully) a walking contradiction at times. My fellow Geminis know what's up.😉 However, I think he captured his own random thoughts in hauntingly, beautiful way. I've noticed that ppl rarely refer to Andy Allo's influence on P's life at this point(imo--there are layers we will never know about). We're talking (approx) about 2011-2013 time period, which coincides with June. His sound, even his look changed. If in doubt, listen to their collab on Oui Can Love--complete departure from We Can F*ck.😐. Again, just my humble opinion. Anyway, I applaud you, PF for trying to decipher the meaning of JUNE bc it is a REAL challenge!!😉

I looked at a dream dictionary for burned food, pasta cooking. Interesting I was actually cooking pasta on the stove in June for a suddenly salad.in 2018 and thought of "June". People universally like June? I must not be of this universe. This is a song I would skip. I think in part because the lyrics did seem somewhat random to me. On the whole I really do like the album. Regardless your video title was intriguing and I thought it would provide a different perspective and interpretation. It did, so thank you. Lyrically June is sad but I find his last albums had songs of reflection and were indicative of an end or a resolve that things were coming to an end. 😔

Ok Youngblood, lol. You redeemed yourself. I appreciate your thoughts, I really do. Thank you for posting this. But you almost lost me at first because to me it seemed like you were overthinking the whole pasta and trademark name thing... Very simply, Prince didn't eat meat and ate a lot of pasta. No hidden meanings there. You were on the money about the song being about lost relationships. Remember he lost Mayte, by choice and Manuela by her choice. The martyr reference wasn't because he was shy at all, he didn't like communicating, especially with the press during the start of his career. The press always misinterpreted and twisted his words. So he stopped talking until he was able to ferret out those few journalists he could trust. The phrase "what did you have for lunch today" is an indirect reference to the Nancy Wilson song, Guess Who I Saw Today, which is about infidelity. It's rumored that Manuela was unfaithful. When he says, "how did I know, how did I know?", it's because he saw her. Mayte said at the ebd of their relationship he didn't trust her and would have her followed. You were also on the money about Woodstock and Richie Havens. Good catch! The lines about the famous birthday and the full moon are references for the fact that unbeknownst to most, Prince spent a lot of birthdays alone. Unless he arranged to give himself a party where every A lister would show, everyone assumed he was busy being showered with love and gifts spontaneously by others. That wouldn't be the case and he'd wind up alone. Take note of the B side cut, Another Lonely Christmas.

I thought the part about "what did you have for lunch today?" was about cheating.... The person he's in love with is out cheating and he knows it... He's lamenting, alone, it's his bday, and he's contemplating his life, and purpose in all of this insanity of this world. Prince was an enlightened cat... Into all things esoteric. He knew he was born with a purpose and that plus his fame caused him to live a lonely existence at times...hard for others to relate or understand the spirituality of it all. Deeply reflective, introspective, and emotional...a summary of where he's at in this snapshot of life, as compared to the cosmic big picture.

Wow I just came across this song and I wouldn’t have been able to breakdown the lyrics for this one haha it makes so much sense now but it makes me want to cry. It makes me sad that he couldn’t picture himself as an old man. He always talked about time and I can understand his perspective on it whenever I see his interviews and he talks about it. I feel like time is both never ending and yet it goes by fast haha that’s probably why he tried not to focus on time. Besides his religion, I wonder if not counting birthdays made him not think about how time is going by fast.

Makes no sense but it will soon. The last line in the song is the punchline. Prince is playing the part of a psychopath. The thing about June is who's talking and when, REMEMBER THAT!!!! I think it's about his impending death. "What did you have for lunch today?" is a classic question for someone with a terminal illness and, "Yeah, how did I know?" in response cause the answer was probably 'nothing' due to the constant diarrhea, hence the drastic weight loss, and wig wearing the last 2 years of his life. There's more, a lot more. But I don't think I should share. It's his bravest song though.

He was trying to talk telepathically to his love who was no longer with him but it was just him talking to himself "What did you have for lunch today? That's right, how would I know? How would I know? You're off somewhere being free, while I starve in the lonesome cold" The song is about early on-set dementia and the fog it was leaving him in. A number of the final tracks refer back to that. People in his crew had to remind him to eat or drink or he wouldn't do it.
