7 is my favorite of Prince. What I never understood was why folks automatically thought it was blasphemy. 7 is the perfect number. I agree that this song is about the record industry. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but Prince was hushed quickly for fighting the "Powers that be." Long live the Purple Reigning Prince.
Prince was well known to have a favorite color (purple), but he also had a favorite number and it was 7. Purple is the color of royalty and P is the first letter of purple and Prince, Seven is all over the place especially in scripture (7 classic planets, 7 deadly sins, creation of world in 7 days, 7 principals of hermeticism, 7 main chakras, 7 represents divinity & completeness, the 7th letter of the alphabet is G (like God), P is the 16th letter of the alphabet -reduce it 1+6=7, Prince was born on the 7th day of June. There is also a correspondence to Eastern religions. Meaning of the Color Violet 7th Chakra - Sahasrara - Top of the head Spirituality, Strength, Passion & Meditation Element - Thought, Universal identity, oriented to self-knowledge The 7th Chakra is known as the Crown Chakra bringing to us our universal connection - all is one. A perfect balance of Red and Blue, instilling both strength and dignity. Violet is the color of Spirituality. It is the color of people seeking spiritual fulfillment.
Hello. Prince's song 7 is all about The book of Revelation in the king James bible. The set of the video is his version of the new city Jerusalem. Of course I could be wrong, but after seeing the video, I thought of the book of Revelations which I found mind blowing to say the least. Remember when Prince says stand in the way of love, he's really saying stand in the way of God, because God is Love. It's not something he has in his back pocket. Thanks for an interesting video PF.
The song is about God and his bride, humanity. I am yours now and you are mine, and together we'll love through all space and time. The city paved with gold, correct, is the new Jerusalem, the kingdom, the new age, the next dimension. "don't cry, because one day all seven will die!!!"
Eye always knew that this song was about God And Soon we will see him come and he will wipe all the tears from our eyes and we will live in peace in the kingdom Of Heaven Where we would be free from all evil and pain and live in a peaceful World with our Lord & Savior
If you choose to accept His finished work on the cross as your salvation. The faith he gives you to believe in Him is a gift. The belief is a trusting in clinging to and relying on our Saviour who is the Almighty Father Himself.
Skipper, was very spiritual. He quotes the Bible all through out his music. Why? Because he loved Jesus. I knew him for decades. I call him Skipper. He definitely loved the Lord. So many people in the Purple Family don't care about God.
I always thought it was the 7 nations from Ezekiel 34-48, that ally with Gog. Both Gog and the 7 nations are allegory for tyrannical evil and the oppression of God's people. Many of the lyrics reflect the symbology in Prince's religious views of Paradise and the symbolic New Temple explained in Ezekiel as well.
he also seems to say, over and over again, that we don't defeat this evil with might but with intelligence and humbleness. That we learn to speak, appropriately, in truth and love. I guess that is what makes good art.
Hi Prince's Friend! Yes, 7 is the number of perfection and completeness, it took 7 days to complete the world (it says). i don't want to get religous but it says In Matthew, Jesus says that church members should forgive each other “seventy times seven times” (18:22), a number that symbolizes boundlessness. So, 7's def a number with special meanings. Prince was raised a Seventh Day Adventist so its inevitably in his music.
😍 Love 7! Like you said once: "it's personal" and for myself, also. Mayte and Prince were together when I was growing up, too and I loved it! Thank you!
7 I think was the song that converted me into a bonafide Prince fan. Felt like a spiritual song. The guitar and the Arabic/Middle Eastern vibe to the song. 7 - with an intellect and savior faire - one of my favorite line. I like your interpretation. To me this was prophetic....I'm still hoping that all 7 of his enemies who terminated his life will die a death where we the public know who they are. Just my own personal twist. Always felt it was biblical before hand.
I always thought it was about fighting the seven sides of himself relating to the seven deadly sins. This I really believe after Mayte speech in 3 chains of Gold, “ ... he killed off the other images of himself in the seven video”
I also find it interesting that when he changed his name to a symbol people saw the sacrifice of victor and thought that “ Victor “ was going be his name. I just thought it was something Mayte was saying
@@PrincesFriend Prince was a number 7 Gemini. 7 was an important number in Prince's lyrics throughout his career.... Look up the meaning of 7 in numerology. In the Bible, the number 7 represents completion 21/04/2016 = 3/4/7 = 16 = 7 = 7 is one of my favorite songs of all time!
I was 10 in 1992...and had an idea of what the song was about... but now... this i can understand... A voice of many colors sings a song so bold...sing it while we will watch them fall. OMMMMM........🕉❤🕉
Yes! This song is so deep. Every line in this song is amazing and worth a thousand words and Interpretations..and to think this is just one Prince songs..he was something else and I wish he was here to explain what he meant by each line.
Just wow. Chills. Thanks for this channel. Just found you. I always wonder what he was really like. He was an actor. And I am as well. He put his face on and became Prince. I have heard a rumor he smelled like lavender.
I think it’s a personal song for Prince. I believe he’s likening his personal transition into the Symbol - Killing off his old persona - to the uprising of a new ambition to unify his many parts into one. Like the schismatic soul is at peace and accepts that division is weak but unity is strength. Or something lol
That is pretty much what Mayte said it was about. This was a big turning point in their friendship. The love was out there for the world to see after this.
You are so informative. JD Steele's comments went straight over my head. That's why I depend on you for your knowledge. It all makes sense now. I could feel that Prince was very spiritual. As I learn, more and more is being revealed to me. Thanks again! Drea
How could the 7 deadly sins NOT be about the record companies-- convenient numbering-- they could also be seven assassins. As with alot of his songs I dont think that anything is specifically carved with one distinct meaning-- poetry allows for multiple meanings to exist simultaneously-- coalescing into a greater thematic entity-- especially when entwined with music and arrangement. Video: sets, fashion and imagery allowed him to expand upon it further.
I think its meaning is about 7 seals at the end of time.We will watch with fall and be broken That the end of the world is coming. He then speaks about all space and time. And key to Kingdom of Heaven. The New City is about Heaven and streets paved with gold.
I love this song’s energy..I feel like Prince was in a transition phase with his music at this time. He was phenomenal. Im thankful I got to see him in concert in the early 2000s. He spoke to the audience about us all being as ONE. It was Amazing.❤
I'm not even finished with the video but I'm thanking you for this already. I've been wondering about this song since FOREVER! On a sidenote, if you already gave a breakdown of his usage of the number 17, thanks in advance!
Prince’s Friend what an interesting analogy, I’ll be looking at the video again and really listening to the words. And by the way what a awesome shirt you’re wearing👍💜💜💜
I have always been a fan of the podcast “dissect” and wondered when someone was going to break down P’s music. Please continue, I’m learning a lot from you and appreciate you brotha! Always wondered about “7” and is also one of my favorites. 💯My mind is blown right now. Hope you take a look at Mountains!
Oooh...I have never heard of the record label theory before...that is really cool, and there is probably a lot of truth to it. Good stuff, bro! Yours earnes a sub!
Thanks for some insight that never occurred to me. After hearing your breakdown, Imo its possible that he could be, in his own nuanced way, be referring to the book of Revelation. Could you possibly breakdown Mountains? I've always felt that it was more to that song than what is heard.
@@AnaSantos-yl4sx I think most who have ever lived in Israel in all three of its iterations, including this one, which is the last, are aware of the Caucus mountains.
Since I have been watching your videos I have learned to really listen and pay attention to what is really being said. What a eye opener!!!!!! Thankyou for changing the way I hear the music so awesome. Awesome review. I love this awesome song it is also one of my favorite as well.
@@PrincesFriend that really makes me happy. I love helping people Your videos really help me through some very rough times. I have said it before this is truly the most important channel on RU-vid. If I really helped in any way words can't Express how happy that makes me. Your the best. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your beautiful family. God Bless.
Hey, PF! It’s been awhile since I’ve seen your vids in your channel, as I was busy w/ my busy schedule on working and studying. Missed you. And great theory and analysis on prince’s song 7 and the lyrics behind it. One of the theory that I find interesting is #3, where prince went through a lot on the record label that he struggled through. I never should’ve thought what 7 was about. That’s interesting. Thanks for sharing, and I give his a like and thumbs up. Thanks for sharing your analysis! I throughly enjoyed it. And I hope you have a very happy thanksgiving 🍁!😄👍
I bought the '3 Chains O' Gold' video, along with the others in the 90's, on VHS. My local record store knew to get a copy in, as it would be bought a day later. Great when I had a VHS player a long time ago.
This was such a good video. When I dance with Mayte this last time she played that song and we danced to it. She lights up when that song comes on. And know I totally get what the lyrics mean💜🦋
As a prince fan myself, I know it's not popular to love mayte, but I love mayte..and more importantly Prince loved mayte and I believe she was the love of his life. When this song was written Prince was at such a strong place spiritually and physically. She probably lights up because this song has a lot to do with his love for her, the whole album was written when he was mad for her and that influence from mayte was all over his art at this time, she knows it too. If they didn't have so much negative people trying to tear prince and mayte apart and worked to help them restore their marriage then I believe they wouldn't have divorced. Anyway I digress...
It’s my wife’s favorite song. She loves his acoustic guitar. Funny u put this out. I’m reading Mayte’s book again right now. Thanks for the insight PF.
I had heard people kicking around theory #3 in a chat room but no one seemed to know where the original comment was from. To me, it made scene but without a reliable source I couldn’t wholeheartedly buy into the theory. Now I have that piece of missing information. Thank you!
Prince’s Friend that was an interesting breakdown of the song. This is one of my favorite spiritual song of Prince. I feel he was singing about evilness on earth and the angel had a key to open the gate to heaven where there are golden streets and a beautiful place for love and peace of all the souls in one accord being in the presence of God. I really love the video. Thank you for sharing. I wish you and your family a wonderful and bless holiday. 💜💜🤗🤗🎶🎶
Great video! Really enjoyed it. Also now makes sense, remember going to a gig back in 95 - deep in the slave era when P was only performing songs from the not yet released Gold Experience, the one song in the set that people had heard was ‘7’....!
I think the song is personal and deals with reincarnation...and souls coming together through lifetimes...and all space and time. The children in the video represent earlier manifestations/lifetimes. ...but your interpretation is deep and awesome. I can see it. It's one of my favorites too.
IDK. I've read other interpretations of the lyrics, and they seem more plausible to me. To me, it will almost mean more than an ode to the extinction of the record industry. It's way deeper than that to me.
Interesting thought.....as I sit here and relisten to the song ....i understand now what Prince was talking about....love Prince and as always he is here around us 💜💜💜💜
Thank you! This song is my absolute FAV by Prince 😍, it has resonated with me from the moment the instruments played, even moreso when I saw the video. A million thanks b/c I always felt there was more depth to the song than the obvious but my understanding of this song was incomplete. Hidden in plain sight
Oh my gosh!!!! You said everything just right....I love this song also....even quotes from the Bible were correct 💜💜💜. Excellent work...have a happy Thanksgiving PF.... I'm thankful I found you on RU-vid 😊
Whatever it meant, this a really interesting breakdown, I wouldn't think of it. But the mastery of it is that everyone can translate it differently and hear what he/she likes and it will work perfectly. He was a true artist...
In the song Strange but true… Prince said “ trying to express the future, sometimes language fails, since he’s been gone really listening to his music, especially the ones that were cryptic I realized that a spiritually minded Prince was within rapture of his love of God and expressing the Gospel Christ, and his thoughts (concerns and foreshadowing of the realities both beautiful harsh and otherwise of the world) to that of the people of the future…. Princes music is Future music, ~7~ is about the world now… Especially to the days which we belong with all the ugly sides of humanity showing within the post Trump 2020-2022 current global pandemic world. One may say how? Due to the song being released in the 90’s… to that especially with Prince and his music the one thing the serious listeners of his music can agree on is that his music along with being funky et all it is/was a form edutainment and prophetic insightful seeing by way of sound!!! With his music he expressed this life, the future and the afterlife thus the song ~7~ and in the world of today we are watching the strongholds of the world which in many ways as he sang stand in the way of love being bought into question, and hopefully they all soon with our observance of them we all shall witness them fall!!!
Again, I totally agree with u! I have always known this. He was going through such a radical and confusing time in the mid nineties when the name change and all else was happening!! Thanks again kido!!
The Record labels make sense because if that was released on “The Symbol album” which iirc was a middle finger to the record industry. Too bad he couldn’t be around for SoundCloud or BandCamp.
I actually like your interpretation, I don’t necessarily agree with it, but I think I’d incorporate some element of princes struggle with the record company. I think the words came from a feeling of frustration, but a desire for peace. He was SDA in the early 90’s, SDA engage in biblical apocalyptic theology. They analyse Revelation for brunch. I believe Prince is taking the frustration and resentment he feels about his relationship with Warner Music and applying it to biblical eschatology. The structure of which focuses on the story of Christ talking about the 7 churches in Revelation. It also coincides with so many other themes in the Bible. Prince was so cool 🤓
AWESOME analysis, Bro. E! Also, thanks for the account from JD Steele. I met some of the Steeles when I was in college in the mid-90s, when they were doing a play about Mahalia Jackson, and talked to one of them during an intermission. I'd say Prince's spiritual and religious references go back to even "Controversy" and "Annie Christian", onward to "Let's Go Crazy", as well as the backmasked track on the tail end of "Darlin' Nikki". I think it intensified after his Black Album experience, which led him to shelve it, and then release LOVESEXY. It's sad that so many weren't getting what Prince was talking about from Lovesexy onwards. Prince will NEVER be replaced, and I STILL miss going to see him live and all the times when he'd surprise us with new stuff. R.I.POWER Bro. P & Thank You, Prince's Friend!
P's walk with the Lord was as real as it gets, it changed him from the inside out, if u followed his song writing u can see the growth and development, it became clearer and more focused on God and our purpose here on Earth......"we walk by faith and not by sight"... keep on keeping on PF's and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family..💜💜💜✝️✝️✝️🌈🌈🌈👁️C Luv God
I have been a Prince super fan since 1982. And of course I followed him closely during this era. “7” was recorded right around the time Mayte turned 18. EVERYTHING during that time was about Mayte. I don’t doubt he told someone that it was about the record companies but he said a lot of things to confuse people. He also said before practically every tour that it would be last time he was going to play the hits. He was building the mythology about his and Mayte’s relationship during this time in a lot of his output. That is what “7” is about.
Absolutely I agree. Prince loved mayte. She touched all of his music at this time. Everything was about his love for mayte, I think 7 has many meanings and they all circle back to his life with mayte and the love he felt for her.
thank u PF....I love this song, always thought it was about the bible. But u have made it SO much more 4 me! I look 4ward to listening 2 the song 7 again, and with ur breakdown, and the knowledge u've given, it'll seem brand new 2 me.
Great video. Its always amazing 2 dig deep in2 Prince works and song texts. Because things often have different messages & meanings all 2gether. 7. Is a great track from a amazing album definitely a favourite of mine. When I heard the song and saw 3 chains o gold movie it made me 2 believe it was about changing starting over becoming o(-> to be free someone else a new start. Not long ago I wrote about 3 chains o gold this. I remember very clearly when Prince’s Symbol album came out and Prince 3 chains o gold VHS video was released. Over and over I was playing and watching the music & film it was a taste of what's 2 come 4 the future. I love and still love the ending of the movie when Mayte explain the meaning 2 come 4 the future and Prince closing up 2 a grave with church bells ringing and the Sexy MF chain hat in the grave, him closing a chapter 2 begin a new. When a artist of any form writes a story/music/poetry they often tends 2 give it up 2 the people to figure out what it means to them personally! Because everyone has a story a history. And somtimes a song is so straightforward it speaks 4 itself. Some Prince farms speak about a purple high when listening 2 his music. Some a religious high. It's always amazing 2 hear different input from the purple family and especially people who actually was with Prince of the Recordings.
Thanks so much for your insight to this song.. I love 7, one of his best hits and the and I've always knew he spoke of the music industry,, but I also thought he spoke of his siblings as well... Thanks for making me fully understand the meaning of the song.. Peace and love is what the nation needs...
Prince was in and out of the Book of Revelation...7 means COMPLETION (Genesis)...Michael is the Arch Angel...'And the Shoel Angel...Holds Keys'...Prince is referring to the SLAVERY of the ARTIST of the industry...Contracts...that chain an Artist with the gift into their platform...keeps these witty thieves living lavish lives...they are the OZ of its empire...i.e...Monopoly...(Marylin Monroe...was signed on to a 'SLAVE CONTRACT' as it is called...it's in her documentary so are other Artist on contract)...Prince is referring to the BEAST...the LABLES (MGM, CLIVE DAVIE, WARNER BROTHERS...etc...the KEYS)...The 'Army'...is the Great War that started in heaven...(seen by Ezekiel)...Another...those who have died...Houston, Jackson...( Thriller was Bible like)...if you look at the acclaimed Human Stars today...they all are corralled...in this sphere that they can not get out and a lot of them do not want to get out...or off...their Pedestal they have become trophies to the industry...That is what Prince is revealing to the world... it is not all glint and glamour there...people, think before you leap...Prince realized the industry was in the way...of manys' freedom to access their given talents and the industry know they are the Creative, Controlling BRICK WALL nobody wants to touch...BETTER YET...Artists refute to join and tear down this Forestry...When you really see it for what it is...Prince was coxed just like Whitney...others...into ending their era...the industry was looking for that weak point in their lives to make the HIT. It is high time for, especially, Musician's to return back to having fun...their roots...that is what made music...authentic...grass roots authentic...and it was Good times...This INDUSTRY is a DEATH TRAP...for Satan...when he is finished with YOU...Much more but will stop here...US/NC P.S...PRINCE FRIEND...Very good analogy of this Song...better late than never
'Ello! I'm glad I viewed this when I did, right on time all the time. Watching it thru only solidifies it in my top 3 of His work. My thoughts, 7 = days of the week... Don't know how much space I have but, your video attached the 7 sin to the days and the fall, Angel and the likes kinda follow suit. The Record Co.'s weren't ID'ed so detailed it was broader Evils and such. Over all, I'd repeat this song among others and Zone in to Spirt many times. Blessed to have an outlet and Generation to discuss it! ☯️💜🎶🙏
I always found the lyrics to this song fascinating. The number 7 could be his fav number, since he was born on the 7th day of June it might be why he chose that specific number, but the way he's interpreting it in the lyrics is interesting 'All 7 and smoke them all" i think are the evil/demons that stand in the way of 2 people in love. It could be about finding his twin soul at the end of time. I can't help and think of how Vanity and P passed away so close together i wonder if it means anything.
Prince Friend, we can only speculate, however, I feel you are right where Prince would have us go!!! My thoughts are the message is multi-layered with most the elements you mentioned and more. When you look at Prince whole body of work, it’s taking us with him on this journey to evolve to a higher frequency!!! The record industry is a mere reflection of the corruption in this world, so I think, the reference is used symbolically!!! I’ve had a theory... that a play on how you stayed Prince killed The Prince that was a part of the industry... my theory was perhaps Prince death April 2016...was staged for him to remove hisself from the industry...he wrote in song, many of the circumstances surrounding his death for many years prior...you’re right he was a ‘True Master of Music’ nothing was random...it all plays together!
One of the best Prince comments I've seen! He was operating at a higher frequency firing on more cylinders than anyone else. Gemini7. The esoteric occult Prince, layered symbolism and imagery is a highly underrated feature of his artistry. I liken him to Da Vinci or Kubrick in his ability to denounce the power structure whilst receiving funding from them. 4/21(Die 4 U), Rebirth of the Sun sacrificial period, Queen's 90th birthday, Purple (crown chakra royal) Reign, Always Snow lyrics & initial tracking taking place on 4/21, Warner civil war... He was the master and the specific dating of his 'death' signifies this. The 100m contract was purposely entered into. He was big on numerology. 3121. 4/21 is the 111th day of the year. 100 steps ahead!
Trevor Jonathan Thanks! You are so on point, as well, we’d need to practically write a book, the layers are so thick! This has been my focus of study when it comes to Prince!
Cynthia Lowery His quote during the mid 90s Tavis interview “a person tryna play me plays themselves” speaks volumes. He was close with George Clinton who notoriously got screwed by record contracts. P entered the contract and got $100m as a symbolic act. He released Emancipation and used the 3 pyramid of Egypt imagery to symbolise the end of the golden age (of black renaissance music) - given the strategic changes in music industry business practices on the horizon. There’s a mid 90s press interview where P references an Egyptian king who went against the grain for the good of his people.
Cynthia Lowery Looking at mid 90s black music from the top down (“Colonised Mind”), Agenda 21, The Gulf War and the rise in weapons manufacturing, it is clear that there was a concerted effort to manipulate the masses through mainstream entertainment. 2pac Biggie ODB(“black man is god”) were taken out and hip hop (“cool black music” lost its consciousness. The movie Pootie Tang does a great job highlighting this!
I think you are correct about how Brother Prince Nelson was all the way back before becoming a dedicated Jehovahs Witness was speaking of our world being returned back to perfection after Armageddon and the Great Tribulation. Rev 21: 3-4 " He ( Jehovah God) will wipe every tear from their eyes and death will be no more. Neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." I feel he ALWAYS had Jehovah Gods Divine Inspiration and his Holy Spirit helping him to write his AMAZING SONGS. I am also a Jehovahs Witness and I know we ALL MISS HIM SO VERY MUCH. BUT I KNOW WE WILL SEE HIM AGAIN AFTER ARMAGEDDON AND WHEN JESUS CHRIST RESURRECTS OUR DEAD LOVED ONES WHOSE MAME IS IN " THE BOOK OF LIFE "
Please feel free to contact me....and what was your Facebook account? Please send me a friend request under the same name Jennifer Beth Smith....Thank you
Great Breakdown. Thanks. I watched another video which detailed how ALL label contracts are "death contracts". Apparently, the contracts state that if your sales drop below a certain point for a certain period of timer they have the right to "kill you off", because an artists sales will quadruple instantly upon an artists Earthly Departure.... like, over 200% of their ALL TIME HIGH sales... PERSONALLY... I don't like to think it's an actual physical death, I think all the greatest who died too early (Prince, Jackson, Bowie...) are all kicking back sippin' Mai Tais on a remote resort somewhere far far away from paparazzi. *CHEERS* ;)
