PoP2008 is such a beautiful game. Having a game in the series focused on platforming would be fine, and even in the first couple of hours I didn't mind that, it felt like great game to kick back and relax, even if the story is about stopping the apocalypse. But then those goddamn collectibles showed up and I was like "Nope! Not happening!". Seriously I'm fine with shorter game if it's focused in it's execution, but adding 5 billion of useless shiny objects to pick up everywhere is not fun or challenging. You just adding busy work. At least don't make it your whole gameplay loop.
Yeah the collectathon was annoying but you only needed to collect a select amount of them I think. No need to collect everything. I wish there were some better things to do while exploring the world but the Prince's banter with Elika mostly kept me company.
I have fond memories of PoP 08. I was still lagging behind in the old gen when my friends got a new hd tv and the hot new xbox 360 with their first game being PoP 08 because they were big fans of SoT. Me being a platformer nut from the ps2 era I was absolutely enthralled by it. There was nothing else quite like it and it still holds a mysterious and fantastical part in my memory. When you're young and seeing such a massive graphical upgrade, it's like magic for the first time. I think that's why PoP08 was so unique and fresh.
PoP games are simply fascinating. I gotta play one or two of them when I can. Also, mad respect for Bloodborne the Card Game behind you. It's a surprising amount of fun.
I disagree with PoP 2008 being edgeless in a pursuit to be mainstream in comparison with the past trilogy. Compare with what was mainstream at both timeframes. In 2003-2005 the triple A games were the edgy teen grungy slop. Even mascot platformers went through that. PoP 2008 didn't connected to anyone for being a different artistic vision during a period where Ubisoft tried to push more conceptual and artistic looking games for a cycle. In 2008 we had MGS4, Fallout 3, GTA4, Gears of Wars. That's what Triple A looked like. PoP was a push against that general aesthetic and tone, but didn't worked.
It's because the original PoP dev didn't like the edgy PoP games and wanted to go back to a more Disney like friendly game. It doesn't have to do much with not following the mainstream games
Let's not forget how PoP 08's true ending has you undo everything you've spent the entire game trying to to do and doom the world you just purified just to get your gf back despite the fact that she didn't want you to and the game ends with the Prince and Elika's immediate death
Pretty sure it doesn't end with their immediate death, both the PlayStation-exclusive DLC and the Fallen King DS game take place after the end of PoP2008 afaik But ye he does kinda undo the seal just to get his gf back doesn't he
The true ending was locked behind DLC only available for console players, and basically it goes like this: ahriman is in a process of escaping, prince and elika are hiding in some previously inaccesible castle, and elika says that she have to go to look for her people, then flies off the balcony leaving prince alone. For me its clear that they wanted to do sequel to that, because both endings are massive cliffhangers, but I guess It didnt sell good enough. And by the way, im still mad as fuck that I could not experience DLC myself, just because I dont own the console. Such a shitty move.
afaik the DLC was supposed to come to PC too but ppl were so pissed off at its ending on console that Ubisoft decided they're just gonna pretend it never happened source: I read it on the Internet once pls don't hit me with some leaked internal Ubisoft files from yrs later if am wrong on this ok
@@piotrtokarz4764 Ahriman's prison already slowly failing is not something they added with the dlc but it is already present in the original ending. If you listen to Ahriman's creepy whispers as you go to destroy the 4 trees to resurrect Elika Ahriman says outright his prison is failing and he will be free eventually no matter what. It's just quite vague and imo they should have given more hints throughout the game. Resurrecting Elika always was the good ending as it was always obvious to me her powers and first resurrection came from Ormazd and not actually Ahriman, as Ahriman is only ever shown to corrupt throughout the game, so her being alive again means theres still hope to stop Ahriman. It is such a shame a sequel never happened 😞
20:27 You never had to shuffle around pillars in Warrior Within at least (the one I played the most) you could input an immediate jump there too, but I'd be lying to you if I didn't say I jumped to my death multiple times trying to do that because the direction input relative to the prince never made sense at least for my 15-16 year old self. So it might as well not be there haha.
I can confirm That it was in sands of time as well. There's actually cool time saving interactions like this for most platforming action through out the trilogy. which I think is nest. In that it creates this cool learning curve where the first time through a platforming section will have you trying to figure out where to go and how to avoid traps, making it feel more like a kinda movement puzzle. But after you get used to the system and know where to go you can smoothly flow through the environment without ever having to stop. Even if yes, figuring out the direction it wanted you to push on the pillers was always a pain.
POP 2008 was my first HD game on our newly built PC. At the time I wasn't very good with games or timings, so this game was helluva lot accessible. I used to struggle on getting timing right for the ring-handle parts. Also the first time I saw characters with charm. Like the banter, I never experienced something like this and seeing in-game was kind of... liberating.
PoP 08 looks like the kind of game I would love to sit down and play just for relaxation. It being tied to the prince of Persia name probably hurt it the most but man…that gameplay footage just kept my eyes glued to the screen
Pop 08 was honestly in terms of most stuff amazing. *not you light seeds*. The effort over making sth that seemed actually persian with the old persian mythology was awesome
Despite that I myself have never had any active interest in the Prince of Persia franchise, I have to say, the design of the Prince himself in PoP 08 is exquisite. I really love that design for him, it's so sleek yet (in terms of attire) appropriate for who/what the character is and when it takes place.
In a lot of RU-vid video comments, you see people reference jokes said in the video. With KBash content, there's so much funny funny joke joke that I don't even know what to say. Your editing and writing is always great. You are severely underrated but I know that won't be forever. Keep up the good work you goddamn champion
Man I really loved Prince of Persia 2008. I think it didn't do too well because it was so different from the Sands of Time games which everyone loved. I played the SoT trilogy too before playing the 2008 game but I never really compared it with the old games. I thought it was dumb. Before playing the SoT trilogy I played the OG PoP 1 and 2 as a kid. It's so wildly different from the 3D games it's not even funny. So, the idea of the 2008 reboot being different from the old SoT trilogy was not a new concept for me. I mostly welcomed the differences in the reboot and enjoyed it for what it was. My favorite aspect was obviously the banter between the Prince and Elika and the beautiful world. The aesthetics reminds me of Frutiger Aero. I miss that era so much. That game was so unique and took such huge risks, not all of them paying off. It'd be insane to see a reboot like this of an established franchise nowadays. Sadly, it didn't work out and we'll probably never see a continuation of that story. It sucks because it feels like I'm only one of the few people who like this game as most people only talk about SoT trilogy (as they should since those games were great too). PoP 2008 was a gem and I wish it got a worthy sequel that was just as beautiful and unique.
Pop 2008 was actually the first pop game I ever played and I enjoyed it not knowing too much about the history of the game since before this all I played were jrpgs
20:26 I'm 100% sure you've been able to do this since SOT. You just press the direction you want to jump off a pole and press jump and the prince will do it without having to turn 90 degrees individually.
I just found your channel today and have been binging it. Great humor, analysis, thumbnails, editing, hair, and taste in games. Instant sub, keep up the good work homie.
I was so in love with the characters of PoP 08 but knowing I couldn't die and having it be 'open' but honestly still linear via the necessity to collect everything just put a giant damper on playing.
Gaming industry was changing big time by the time the forgotten sands came out and maybe that's why the whole franchise just didn't get enough attention. Man 2008 title is such a different and beautiful game in the series. Now I am once again so thirsty for these 10-12 hours campaigns
I don't think I have heard anyone speak better than Bash. Don't know if it is just me or for anyone else, but... Bash just has some quality that doesn't allow me to listen to him in the background, I'm compelled(positively) to pay my full attention to get the most of his video.
I used to hate on PoP08, it wasn't my beloved sand-trilogy, and I can't get my head around why we needed a game with the title that isn't related to the main story at all. Now I playing trough them again after years, and the Forgotten sands for the first time. I can say with confidence, after playing that shit of a game, I no longer hate Pop08. Yes, it isn't a sand trilogy game, yes, I still don't understand, why they didn't tie it to the original Prince, there was ways to do that and make it canon, the sands were destroyed, but it isn't meant that the prince can't go on other magical journies. But the game is a marvelous one in it's own, if I don't think of it as a Prince of Persia game, I can see why people loved it and maybe I start to love it too.
You forget to mention - for PoP 2008 there was a console-locked/exclusive region-locked (yes, even that) Real Ending DLC (Just like in "Asura Wrath" game), and also PoP: The Fallen King for Nintendo DS (Yes, it is canonical game. Game is canon for PoP 2008, and takes place - AFTER true ending DLC of PoP 2008).
I wonder why people say the trilogy platforming isn't as smooth as the later entries. They always use the example of the pillar jump... yet the trilogy has the same mechanic. You just have to hold the direction you want to jump and press jump. This has made pillar jumps become super smooth.
If it weren't for these fucking orbs, PoP 2008 could have been a bloody masterpiece. Yeah sure, the ending is controversial, but I think it is marvelous in its own right.
Your videos have been so addicting. I’ve been watching you since the beginning you have been putting in alot of work. Keep doing what your doing you’ve been improving with each video!
I personally love Prince 08. Always have since I was a kid. Far more than the previous trilogy. The art style, world, characters, story and even the combat, are all really good imo. It sure is way better than The Forgettable Sands. Couldn't stomach more than like 2 hours of that boring slog.
Not gonna lie, I really liked PoP 2008. Yea, it's got rough edges but I think it would have been great if it got a sequel. It is really unique and would have been a masterpiece if it was expanded upon.
Reminder: If you want play The Two Thrones, the version with the best visuals, best lighting, best textures (wholistically) is the PS2 version. So get PCSX2 and go wild in widescreen 4K60 after patches
I’m thinking the next PoP opens with Prince awakening from his years long slumber hahaha Funny in that I just finished the mainline Forgotten Sands only last week.. I think this character has a great deal of depth.. That said he may be my favorite..
3:11 small town gamers rise up. Dial up internet until 2013 😭 Edit: still use an ATT LTE data card for internet, about 15-20mb speeds max. We finally get fiber second quarter 2023, 2 gig.
Believe it or not the Wii version of Forgotten Sands is a completely original game with a completely original story it's the same with the PSP version the PSP version is a 2.5 d game but it is incredibly faithful to the prince Persia gameplay there's also a DS game so you could make another video
"Booba" "Ganking" Where do people learn English nowadays? Also, I'm shocked and surprised to see that any more of these games were made after Two Thrones. Had no idea.
POP 08 was far from perfect but I really wished they had continued and tried to perfect the formula. The whole Sands of Time had become really stale at that point but 08 although answering a lot of the narrative problems failed in the most basic aspect of making a functionly good game. Fighting the same guys over and over while collecting balls was not a good move
pop 2008 is a real shame. I really like the artistic approach and having a cool sidekick. The idea that the battles are focusing on 1on1 boss fights is also super nice. But wtf is this about not beeing able to lose. This is game kinda marks the end of an era where games just got easier and easier till the gamers couldnt take it anymore and some japanese niche game blew up and getting a growing fanbase over the next decade resulting in the super hyped elden ring while noone cares about PoP. PoP 2008 could have been a classic but no matter how cool it looks playing it is just super boring. The sad thing is that after that ubisoft now does only the same game over and over.
Hey Kbash, you know I love your content, I'm a patron, and I fully support you. Do you not feel kind of hypocritical because of this video? You made multiple sexual jokes around Elika, something you've been criticizing games for in your recent videos pretty heavily.
I loved Pop8 and it still looks and plays better then some AAA modern games. As much as I hate collectathons, I got all of those c** spheres. I actually hoped for a plat trophy or some amazing in the game's story or mechanics...eh no. Nope. The prince was hot as fuck though. Put him in smash bros or tekken pls.
The Forgotten Sands (360/PS3) had a glitch that made it so that a certain pillar wouldn't appear that would let you progress at a point 75% through the game, so you had to delete your entire playthrough and hope that it Would appear the next time.
Thank you kbash for another video!! Can anyone help me out with signing up for the patreon? I try to join top tier and it tells me that I have already signed up for a patreon (this is true I’m signed up for smallbeans patreon) are we only allowed to sign up for 1? Any help would be appreciated
Not dying but the pushiment is the fight lasts longer, because the boss regains health. This is tedious. But dying and checkpointing to a boss with full HP isn't?
Idk why People's keep stuck in sands trilogy. POP has never been about Sands it can be whatever it wants, I loved POP 08 and FS, sand trilogy has ended no need for a continuation
