Guitar tutor reacts to first time hearing prince's while my guitar gently weeps live solo with Tom Petty. Yeah, George was stifled a lot in his professional career. You really think he'd want Prince to be anything other than his flamboyant self? If anything it shows that much more genuine respect and emotion. And it honestly was a tasty solo that fit the song rather than clash with it. I loved it

Dhani might have smiled during the performance, but afterward he was quoted saying he thought Prince's performance was self-indulgent and unnecessary. He was not happy about it.

This is why Prince was the boss for so long. I'd recommend him covering Play that funky music from the tour in 2011. He plays both guitar and Bass. Awesome showman sadly missed 😢

It's worth noting that Prince never rehearsed this solo with the rest of the guys. That's what blew the rest of the musicians mind. During the rehearsal time the first guitar player played both solos and Prince just said at the end: "Don't worry guys it will be fine" leaving the rehearsal without doing anything. Then, in this live he just filled in on the spot. That is something incredible.

How did this blow your mind? I mean, honestly. You could almost do anything over this structure, and it would sound at least adequate... Knowing where to be, pentatonically, over the 3 of 7 chord changes is not what I'd call mind-blowing. But what do I know... this is the greatest player of all time, right?

@@jethrogibbs3800 Beethoven once said: The most difficult thing is to create a good melody. Improvise a solo, you may do it, and it may sound dull and boring. Even if it's technically good or adequate. But make something mesmerizing on the spot, improvised, not rehearsed, even if it isn't complex or virtuousistic is really really difficult. Normally the most proficient musicians plan ahead.

@robertocaesar I disagree that it sounds mind-blowing again. Also, much of that was thought out. It did not just come from nowhere. It wasn't scripted, per se, but knowing the chord changes and your basic pentatonics will get you there. This was no virtuosic performance. The most interesting thing he did was the opening reverse bends. But, again...I may just not be understanding the most powerful guitar player of all time, right? It is good, not great. I'm sorry, but Prince is not a genius improviser. I can tell you that by virtue of understanding theory.

Hot take: technique > feeling I'll admit it's a very pedantic justification, but the feeling come from whatever technique they are using. A lot of the time we think of shred as technique but; touch, pick attack, dynamics, vibrato, bends are all types of technique too. Granted ones that tend to be more vocal and give more feeling. But even that shred run he did had a tonne of fire in it, that's what the song needed and Prince delivered the goods!

Even with George as his dad, I imagine it still must have been a bit daunting for Dhanni Harrison, being on stage with 4 famous artists who, between them, wrote a wealth of classic and great songs. Prince knew how to do flamboyant and he's clearly loving displaying his guitar skills as part of this once-in-a-lifetime line-up.

You did a fantastic reaction and analysis, just a few points I would make. I've never heard of a pro guitar player that considers prince anything less than a master guitarist. This particular performance is a tribute to George Harrison. He wasn't playing prince, he was playing ROCK. He was playing for everyone on that stage, and the fellow rockstars in the audience, above all he was playing for the Magazine that put him so low on their list.

It took me watching this like 10 times before I noticed that his cheeky look was his guitar briefly getting disconnected and he was basically going "oops my bad" probably to the sound guy before plugging back in and verifying with a strum before continuing the solo. It all happens so fast and isn't even noticeable just by hearing the song.

@rudymora4179 I've watched this quite a few times myself. Interesting perspective on what was happening at that "cheeky moment ." Knowing the history of this performance, Prince didn't have a rehearsal with this ensemble of musicians. Maybe a very limited one... He knew that Jeff Lynne would play the first solo. He would play the second. I believe that look was to Jeff saying, I yield back to you for the close. Jeff gave him the go ahead to continue. I'm sure you're probably a musician yourself and know the subtle cues given when you're sitting in with a band playing unrehearsed.

Prince is a guitar god! Not only guitar he could play almost all other instruments. He was a musical god! He played this solo without any rehearsal. He walked on stage and jammed this out! What an amazing musician.

Great reaction! Thanks for your perspective on his solo. Prince is my favorite musician of all-time since I was 9yrs old, I'm 50 now so I've spent a lot of time hearing him. For me what's so impressive is that he was able to juggle so many talents and still found the time to learn to read music and play guitar. That Madcat H.S. Anderson/Hohner Telecaster he used was the most viewed in his early start in the late 70's. I never thought his ability to shred was earth shattering but it didn't need to be, he often did things fast and many times would improvise live on stage. But I also think that if he had put all his talent and genius into just playing guitar.......man, he would be the guitar god. Safe travels on your life journey 🤘

I've read in different publications that Prince did not read music. He didn't at the beginning of his career and later on he said he didn't want to learn because he was afraid it would alter his process and might change his music. Most of his music from 1985 on was arranged by Clare Fischer, He worked with Prince on pretty much every album and his films to develop the sound of most of what we hear on Prince albums. They worked together for 20+ years.

One of the other musicians, I think it was Steve Winwood, said that no one knew that Prince was going to throw his guitar and when Prince did, he watched it thinking someone was going to get hurt when it came down, but it went up into the catwalks and just vanished into the darkness. Steve, (I THINK it was Steve, it's been several years since I watched the interview) didn't see any lines or cords on the guitar but being under the lights he probably wouldn't have, but it went up and just vanished.

Prince liked to create a spontaneous, raw feel to his music. I sort of imperfection makes it sound more natural. I think that's why we loved him so much.

Another guitar reaction channel summed up Prince really well. He said that unlike other musicians they only tend to play one instrument so they have hours and hours of practice to get really good at it. Prince does so much other stuff (Singing, writing, dancing, etc) he does not have enough time just to dedicate practicing the guitar. That really made me realise just how amazing Prince is.

I understand when you say he may intentionally play a little sloppily to add emotion but at that one point where you thought he was being a little cheeky he was actually showing Tom Petty that he had broke a string half way through his solo. So just Imagine how much different the later half would've sounded if he hadn't. Just food for thought.

Pretty cool reaction to my favorite musician and artist of all time. Prince played a lot of guitar but that was not always known to the masses. Anyway, it would be great if you would react to his songs "Empty Room" (in Montreux, Live, length: 5m51s) and/or "The Ride" (also a Live recording) the one with his yellow cloud guitar that lasts 5m58s. I think you would like those, and if so there are many more!

Hi bro, you did away with introducing this, the posthumous induction to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame for GEORGE HARRISON in 2004 as a SOLO ARTIST, already a RARHOFamer from years earlier as a member of The Beatles and although Lennon/McCartney were the dominant songwriters this was written by Harrison and featured on The Beatles White Album (1968). The young guy digging Prince as he’s leaning back into the crowd ………… it’s no wonder he’s digging it as Prince and the other musicians are killing this song ………… it’s DHANI HARRISON, George’s SON and his SPITTING IMAGE of s young George. For any other casual viewer who may not be any the wiser others on stage include Steve Winwood, ELO’s Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty 😊

It never ceases to amaze me how these people on RU-vid can sit there and pick apart a genius musician like Prince playing guitar! It’s truly laughable that they’ll never achieve any fame or fortune like this man. Talking about something isn’t played “perfectly” makes no sense because you can’t put Prince in a box. His fans aren’t trying to find flaws we’re just being entertained by his showmanship and brilliance. If you want musicians who play by your little book, don’t review Prince, he was a musical genius who did things his way. Just stick to your British artists and leave our Black icons alone, please and thank you!!

The Multi-Genre God. He could play anything, and your favorite artists have been deeply influenced by him. Corey Taylor, Whitney Houston, Steve Vai, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Lil uzi vert, H.E.R. , Paul Mccartney, all worship Prince to just name a few. Prince recorded his first 2 albums at 16 all by himself, all instruments, lyrics, arrangement, composition & vocals were all by him. He was such a prodigy, that music executives wanted proof, they would fly across country just to see if he could really play all instruments, because it was so unheard of. Prince has over 50 official released albums and when he passed, they found over 10 thousand unreleased Prince music in his vault. He then came into the business and was the FIRST to fight for artists rights, and he WON. He would write "slave" on his cheek and go to meetings protesting against the industry. Prince was also the first artist to sell his music on the internet. You are talking about the most talented artist we will ever see.

I am from the USSR myself. You have written an amazing text. I recognized the Prince back in 1985. And I think he's a brilliant showman, artist and musician. Strangely enough, he was rich, but he did not shine with his wealth. He shone with his music and talent. And this is a composition in honor of George Harrison, as a requiem for him. But at the same time, he also shone like a diamond at the top of the Prince's career itself. Prince is a great musician of modern styles. Тhank you! СПАСИБО!

He’s playing different guitarists styles as an f u to Rolling Stone for leaving him off the the top guitarist list that year. He mainly used Boss pedals so you can probably hear the Boss VB-2 Vibrato And the Vault was a literal vault

Becuz I do beleive we are so in awe if his showmanship that we don't realize from a technical standpoint how difficult the solo may have been or not. From what Ive heard about this event was that Prince sort if blew off rehearsal & this resembled nothing that had been rehaersed. So he scores points for however much of the solo was impromptu. I've read & heard people say that Prince himself always felt underrated as a guitar player & it bothered him. What I hear you saying is that technically it wasnt a very hard solo. Do I have that right? Also, You referenced Prince as sort of a Jack of all trades but not really a master at anything when ralking about how many instruments he could play. I think it means a lot coming from a fellow musician. But from what I've heard from other musicians & band members was that he was pretty accomplished at the instruments he chose to play. I've heard more than one artist, Terry Lewis for instance say that he could play his instrument better than him. What we do know as a fact is that Prince was good enuff at all of the instruments to the point where he didn't need to hire anyone to help him record un the studio. He played all of the instruments on the vast majority of his 40 albums or so.

I can imagine he'd change stuff on the night, to get some of that special spontaneity, cheers for the info! It's still tricky, not an easy solo, but towards the easier side of solos, if that makes sense? I might have misspoke a bit there, meant that he (to the best of my knowledge and I could be wrong, I don't know much about the guy!) wouldn't be counted as a virtuoso on one discipline, but still a very, very solid player across different instruments. If that makes more sense?

For a professional guitarist I'm sure what he played wasn't the hardest arrangement. It's the way it's put together that makes all the difference! That's like saying anybody could do it. If this guy could make his guitar sing like Prince we might know who he is? It would really be a good idea to do a little or a lot of research before making a video about someone else's ability! I say, how can that be when baby's are learning it over there everyday just fine. 😏 I got into a similar discussion with a guy who insisted that Paco De Lucia was a better guitarist than Prince bcuz Flamenco was harder to play than rock, funk, or R&b guitar. Notwithstanding the fact that Charro plays it pretty well, & she ain't on anybody's goat list,😏 I suggested that it wasn't hard to play if you were from Algeciras, Spain where De Lucia was from & that's all they were teaching. Add to it that the dudes father & brothers all played. Prince was self taught

So Prince has been my favorite artist since I first started listening to him back in 1981 and I admit that I’m extremely biased when it comes to his music. So I appreciate honest opinions from what others have to say especially those who have never been a fan. So thanks for the breakdown. Also as good as I find this performance to be, I think he did ones way better than this. I think it’s the stage on which this was done that got so many people talking about his guitar play that night not have heard him play like that before.

I admit I am not a guitar expert by any means, but my opinion on this performance is that the song had been going nowhere before Prince started to play. It was just droning on and on, and I wasn't even paying close attention. But Prince started playing and I woke up. Maybe for a guitar professional it wasn't all that much, but IMO the tribute would have been completely forgettable if Prince hadn't been part of it.

Then you really have no appreciation for great musicians! The first guitarist was just as capable of shredding right along with prince. First solo was played note for note the way Clapton played it on the original! If everyone would of gotten up there and tried to out do the other one it would of been a shit show musically!

The bottom line is - did you create a MEMORABLE performance???? Yes, you can have great technique but were you boring on stage or not with that great technique. Claude Monet was a master in painting....and when you looked close up on his paintings you saw the rough coarse painting TECHNIQUE - yet it gave the illusion of beautiful art from a distance. KEY - great artists take RISKS...that is the separation of a boring performance to memorable.

I'd broadly agree with that, the really interesting stuff often comes when the edge of technique meets inspiration. I'm of the mind set that it's better to have fun, move about a hit a few duds than worry about keeping everything pristine. Totally respect guys that have the patience to do that, cause you sort of need it for mathrock and prog stuff, just not my main jam I suppose.

Yeah, there's a tonne of iconic folk I just don't know much if anything about, that's what's great about these videos, I get the opportunity to learn! My goal here is to try and covey in a hopefully easy enough to understand way some of what's going on and chuck in a lesson for the guitarist, apologies if it came off as simplifying and tearing down- definitely not my intention.

That quote from Eric Clapton has been attributed to multiple artists including Hendricks and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Also I'm not sure what you're getting up on your hind legs about. I don't hear critcism, I hear a guitarist breaking down the playing. A critique is different than criticism. Sheesh.

I liked the fact that this guy was very knowledgeable and could play, so he knows what he’s talking about, BUT I didn’t like that he kept stopping the solo, to try and impress everyone by showing he could play as well, this wasn’t about him or what he could do, it was almost like he was out to prove he could do what Prince does and although he was doing some of the things Prince was doing it didn’t sound nearly as good as when Prince did it!!!!!

Obviously you know your strings very well but you don't know Prince style of playing. Nothing that he did here surprised me, he was actually being very reserved with his skills. Guess you would also find Hendrix style abit sloppy. Good review though.

Definitely was cool but by no means the greatest…I hear a bunch of non musicians say that and it couldn’t be further from the truth….hundreds of solos that out that to shame….that said, still awesome…..and Dhani Harrison later would say he thought it was “a bit gratuitous” and that he wasn’t the biggest fan of him doing that
