No kidding. He smoked those other legends onstage, and looked like the only one who enjoying the performance (besides George's son). Incredible to think that Prince wasn't even really familiar with the song before being asked to join the tribute, and didn't get to rehearse much with the rest of the guys, but pulled this performance out like it was no big thing. He was GREATNESS!
That’s really hard to hear that!! This man is music……😮 bloody Sony does like f people up who take them on. He is just as good as Gilmore and a few others I could mention. We the people know he was one of the best. He did so much more than the pop music he made to pay the bills. The man became part of the guitar when he played, may he RIP.
The funny Prince story behind this is that the producers of the show never heard him rehearse. He just told them, “Don’t worry, I got it.” He had it, and he took them all to school.
There is a bit of a story behind this, I read somewhere. Prince had been left off a list of the 100 best guitar players in rock. So this is a kind of "hold my beer" performance.
No, Prince & Rolling Stone did have a falling out, but he's on their top 100 list at #33. Prince was also inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 too, but performed to pay tribute to George Harrison's (The Beatles) induction. His son is the young man on stage standing behind Tom Petty. George Harrison also wrote this song. Prince was invited to rehearse with them, but he politely declined and said that if they would leave a spot open for him (they did to honor his induction too that year), he'd show up and give his best & he did! **The guitar was caught by one of his people & given to Oprah as a gift!
@@LG-kx8xl yeah it was a thing from the rumors around it that he was being left out but that was like in the late 90s and yeah all that transpired after he/or his circle/ fans spoke up. this was due to people saying he maybe just a "pop" artist. but it's all water under the bridge now. and credit was given where credit was due. i belive this also lead to Run DMC getting in with the help of eminem for that "rock this way" remix/ feature and what not.
I heard that George’s son was worried about Prince being there. But, his mother reassured him it would be fine. You could tell by his smile that it was.
Prince is amazing but people forget Stevie Winwood was a guitar prodigy at the age of 13. We was playing back up to people like BB King when Americans would tour England.
I love the big grin Prince gives Tom Petty in the midst of his guitar solo. He just looks like he's having so much fun, and Tom just kind of grins back and shakes his head, like, "You're crazy but you kick ass, man." LOL. The whole performance is so good.
He was grinning because Prince didn’t rehearse with them nor had he heard that song until the day before this performance. Prince improvised and Tom let him right there on the spot. There’s interviews about this on RU-vid.
In an interview with him about that scene he actually threw shade at Prince . He was kinda shitty about it. He called Princes performance "Gratuitous". And yeah he looks like his dad.
He played like 22 instruments. Extremely talented. There were many guitarist that played better or worse if that info interest you.. but, regardless Prince could play the hell out of a guitar. Oh, and he wrote so many songs for so many artist... well known artist and hits. There are few artist that are this versatile and excel in so many areas.
Despite so many stars in their own right on that stage playing homage to a music royal, Prince literally owns this in the 2nd half, showing his phenomenal guitar skills that surprisingly, many people are unaware of.
@@caperboy1169 According to Ultimate Prince that quote by Clapton is false. ultimateprince.com/prince-eric-clapton-quote/ Also the one making the claim should be the one who has to back it up. So maybe before you go quoting someone, or misquoting someone you should google it.
This song was famous from George Harrison (Beatles) and this show was to induct him into the R&R Hall of Fame in 2004.. His son Dhani is playing guitar behind Tom Petty. Jeff Lynne was lead singer in ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and my favorite song by them was "Evil Woman". Steve Winwood is on organ. You know Prince. The other guitarist is Mark Mann (in Jeff Lynne's band). Epic performance.
Prince was a musical prodigy who played many instruments. He was an absolutely savage guitarist and also one of the best bass players you'll ever see. RIP to a legend gone too soon.
There was a poll put out amongst the top guitarists a few years ago. They were asked who they thought was the best guitarist of all time. The winner was Eric Clapton. When he was asked what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist of all time he said, "I dont know. You would have to ask Prince" Prince played 27 instruments and had his hands on pretty much every single top charted song or album in the 80's. The man was an absolute musical genius.
@@dominicksforza3484 Eddie Van Halen was one of the guitarists polled. The poll I'm talking about was amongst professional and famous guitarists, not "regular" people. Eric Clapton's peers are the ones who dubbed him the greatest. Eric Clapton is the one who said Prince was the best. Not me. I totally agree with you about all of them being among the greats.
The traveling wilburys... Handle with care or end of the line. It's a super group that consisted of George Harrison of the Beatles, Jeff Lynne of electric light orchestra, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. Check them out.
Prince always could shred a guitar....That sexy specimen was a genius of all instruments. HE DID THE DAMN THANG! He knew all the talent that was instilled in him..thats why he always strutted off the stage after every performance bc he knew he just killed it....I bet we never got to witness all the greatness that was within him bc he was TOOK from us far too soon. There will NEVER BE anyone that can compare to the talent, Soul & Funk Prince was gifted with...#GOAT💜
Dude, Prince was one of the best guitar players to ever LIVE. Period. And he also played an insane amount on instruments. I just looked it up, he played 27. He was a genius.
This is a Tribute to George Harrison and his son, Dhani (young dark haired boy), is playing guitar. This is a George Harrison song and Eric Clapton played guitar on the original George Harrison recording. The Traveling Wilbury's is an all star band that has some great songs. Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan were all in that band together. End of the Line is a good song by them but pretty much all of their songs are great. This is a beautiful song, thank you for the reaction. Prince is a very skilled guitar player and he played nearly every other instrument with great skill also. Prince is rated as one of the best guitar players of all time. Prince was playing instruments with expertise as a toddler without any musical teaching or experience (just like Mozart did as a child). Prince was a musical genius, I really miss his talents.
In a BBC interview about Purple Rain saving Eric Clapton's life, he said that Prince was "a reincarnation of Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix and James Brown in one. I thought that’s exactly what the world needed."
Man, this is glorious watching you experience this... I'm telling you, you've got to create a playlist for just Prince... There is no catalog like this and you'll spend the next 20 years hearing new stuff like you've never heard... And then to get you past just the hits where a lot of others are content... there is soooo much more! Try out "Pink Cashmere"... And, there is a story behind this... it was the night Prince was inducted into the Rock-n-Roll hall of fame and it is said he hadn't ever heard this song until the night before, and wrote that solo on the fly!
It's amazing how much talent can be on one stage, and that Prince can still steal the show. RIP George, Tom, and Prince. The young bloke playing the guitar is the son of George Harrison, guitar player from The Beatles, and the songwriter for this song. The man who's voice you liked is Jeff Lynne, who is the singer/founder of ELO.
Prince could play 24 instruments fluently by the time he was 12. His parents were jazz musicians. This was Prince giving Rolling Stone magazine the finger for not listing him in their list of best guitar players.🎸 The song was a George Harrison tribute and George's son is one of the guitar players. George was the lead guitarist for the Beatles. The guy with the voice you like is from the band, Electric Light Orchestra, (ELO). These guys are all rock royalty and I love them all.
Prince was a perfectionist, if he wanted a thing done a certain way, you had better damn well do it that way... same goes for his musical skills, if he was going to sing, then he wanted it to be the best singing ‘ever’, same goes for his guitar playing, he was a bit of a Diva, renowned for not being the easiest to work with but poeople queued up to work with him because he was that damned good.
Yeah, top 20 guitarist all-time, and this is one of the all-time great guitar solos. I think you overlooked the fact that, after he threw his guitar in the air, it never came back down.
First this is a cover of a George Harrison Beatles song Tom Petty - one of the best selling artist in history. Don't thing you've done any of his songs yet. Jeff Lynn - lead vocalist of ELO which you loved. Steve Winwood - sang with Spencer Davis Group, Trafficx Blind Faith and more as well as a solo artist Dhani Harrison - George Harrisons son. As for Prince he is a out of this world instrumentalist not just guitar. On most of his albums he plays all the instruments.
Suggestions; get you tube premium....no ads, or very few. I wztch this all through not one ad. Also you get RU-vid Music, which is great for music and songs, albums, artists. Etc. I think it is worth it. I enjoy Tom Petty's song list that he had on his phone, PC as his choices for playlist.....wish more artists offered their fave artists and playlist. Good to know what our fave artists like to listen to...also Tom Petty has a real varied list from female singers, from 50's to present.
@Claudine 27 Don’t be angry. He is experiencing most artists for the first time. I imagine he is familiar with some of the more famous Prince songs, but doubt he ever saw Prince perform.
This is the 5th RU-vid reaction to the video in the last week. It must be on a list that RU-vid emailed out to reactors guaranteeing them likes, subscribers and Patreon dollars.
Not exactly. If he wanted to, he could have been on that level. But most people associate him with his dirty lyrics and his costumes. Those that followed him knew how talented he was. It took for after his passing for the rest of the world to see how genius he was.
@@jamesdixon6332 Did Prince play like this on every song? Did he play guitar at all on every song? The answer is no. He didn't want to pigeon hole himself. If he wanted to be the next Hendrix he could have. Period. Learn nuance. It's a valuable life skill.
George would definitely have loved the sheer amount of effort Prince put into it for him - a true triibute - and you can see that the "Wilburys" total got that!
Chad Johnson this is actually an urban myth. It’s been going around, since Hendrix or Clapton supposedly said it about Phil Keaggy. Another was Hendrix saying go ask Rory Gallagher. Mark Knopfler is another one. None are true. But I see this quote all the time.
YES!! In Miami thunderstorm and he never flinched! Folks tried to get him to call it off, but the phenomenal showman that he was, he was like hell no, and tore it UP (in them sexy ass high heeled boots too) Best half time show ever
Christine Macdonald they even tried to get him to perform pre recorded but he wasn’t havin any ov it! The mornin ov the show they asked him if he was ok about the weather an he said “can you make it rain harder” lol legend!
He showed up for the rehearsal the night before but Jeff Lynne took the solo. The producer was surprised and apologized to Prince. Prince said it was cool, not to worry he would be ready at showtime. He certainly was, but any Prince fan knows he has always ripped solos. You can hear it on his debut album.
Just so the kids know- Prince was our Millenium's Mozart. He could play and compose for 22 instruments. He was a GUITAR GOD. I'm sure George Harrison would have been deeply honored by Prince's tribute.
This was one of those situations where there was a billion dollars of talent on the stage. Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, and Prince were (and are) all legends.
Tom Petty and Steve Winwood were part of the Rock'n' Roll Super Group "The Traveling Willburries". Their bandmates were Bob Dylan, the legendary Roy Orbison (Orbison was up there with Elvis for a stretch), and the man this tribute was for, Mr. George Harrison (he got his start as one of the Beatles). Check them out, they only had two albums (Roy died of a massive heart attack after the second album came out. They did a tribute to him in the video End of the line). There was already an outstanding report between the men on stage.
