Historically it has been important for a king to have experienced some time in the armed forces - Army, Navy and Air Force etc. - so that in case of a time of war they understand what their troops are capable of doing in the field of war. The Order of the Garter was founded by Edward III in mid-late 14th Century. Edward was very fond of the legends of King Arthur and the Round Table. Edward had been considering an order of knighthood to rival that of the French, and so the Order of the Garter was formed. True or not, it's a great story.
