The acoustics and mic placements probably aren't the best, so that's why the cymbals sound too loud.

That is amazing because you can tell that they are totally getting in to it. I am sure before this they had no idea who KC or JW was. But Red is one of the most intense songs ever written. When I was in High School one of our local Radio Stations would play this and I would stay tuned in just to find out who it was with no vocals you have no clue. One night the DJ said that whenever they played it they would be swamped with phone calls with asking who was that. That is how I got into Fripp and KC even though I knew the first album

​@rosskstar before that, he was approached and was going to join up in the 2013 version ("the seven-headed beast"), but his management wanted to call the group "John Wetton and King Crimson", according to Sid Smith's book. Naturally, Fripp vetoed that idea.

if, for whatever reason, I'm listening to teenagers play Red, over-excitement is exactly what I want to hear.

That's just the acoustics and mic placement, not the drummer. Don't blame the musicians for the mix.
