The talk is given by Armand Marzada, a consultant orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in knee surgery.
- The talk covers three main topics: history of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) design, components of TKA, and mechanical alignment and balancing of TKA.
- The knee was initially thought to be a simple hinge, but later studies showed it to have more complex biomechanics.
- The anatomical alignment method of TKA design was found to have catastrophic results.
- Variable radius implants have been developed to reduce contact stresses and linear wear on polyethylene in TKA.
