Print with the SUN! Solar Printing Step-by-step Tutorial
Today I am using the contents of this months Smart Art box to create a solar print on a wood panel. This tutorial is sponsored by Smart Art, you can purchase past boxes or subscribe to their monthly art box here: smartartbox.com/
*Now shipping to many counties!
Supplies:
Ampersand cradled wood panel
Solarfast by Jacquard (purple)
Solarfast wash out liquid
Solarfast transparencies
Opaque black pen
Foam brushes
Other items: die cuts or objects to block out light (marbles, felt)
Tips:
Practice on a scrap of wood or fabric before working on your final project.
Blot off excess fluid before placing down your transparency.
Solid and opaque images give a better print than ink jet printed images. Use your printers best ink setting to make sure you get the darkest possible print.
You can make your own negatives on the Jacquard Website: www.jacquardsolarfast.com/

I actually really like how it came out.....the deer on the scrap wood looks so rustic....I like that. Not something I would try but only because I have a lot going on already. I love that you show this box and how different supplies work. I also love how real you keep it. Thanks Lindsay for all your time and always making your videos so interesting.

thanks:) I love those wooden panels and I want anyone else to have a better result, I wish I practiced on a scrap first but now that I have had a couple of days to think about it I think I will take colored pencils and add to the portrait, why not right?

:D exactly! NO RULES IN ART!! I am sure you could mixed-media the first one into something still amazingly cute ( i mean look at that baby it is impossible not to be cute!)

Wow Kea....your Dad was a very wise man and I will share his advice with my own children. I always tell them that making mistakes is the best way to learn; however, clearly, your Dad takes it even further and as I think back over past years, he's so RIGHT! Thank you for sharing that!!!

Not something I would attempt, but very interesting. I love the fact that you just dive in and try new stuff. I like the "tried and true" things, and of course, have to watch that I am being frugal. Please do a video of this method on a tee shirt sometime.

oh my goodness that is a super sweet baby pic. I see why you picked it. I have a seven month old and I'd love to do this with a pic of her. tbh this looks like a super involved process though so maybe I'd just do a gel transfer with a toner print. tfs!!
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 7 лет назад
you can also do a toner transfer with a clear chartpak marker or Xylene, workds great and you can tint it with alcohol inks or pens or even watercolors afterward!

Hi Lindsay!! One of the tips, I found when using this product was to print out 2 of the transparencies and line up one on top of the other for the best result. I just used transparencies from Staples. Love your videos!!!

great presentation... dont think i would waste the money on that! i live in sunny Florida. i could probably just tape down articles and do the reverse effect wait a few days to a week waiting on sun fade

Lindsay I love your sense of adventure with these things. I would have been paralyzed into inaction when I couldn't figure out the instructions but you just dive in with abandon. I'm going to model your behaviour until I get the hang of it!

Great fun, years ago I used large sheets of direct duplicating film to cyanotype print on polished cotton for a quilt. Today there are stable compounds for this process that are more durable.

Thank you, I have some solar paper I've stored for over a year I couldn't come up with something I wanted to try. Let us know if you try this on fabric. Great video.

Maybe the smoother texture of fabric would work, I'm curious to see that on a tshirt! Also, if it ends up patchy, it can make a good acidwash/tiedye effect! Thanks for the video! :)
@confusedwhynot

Maybe use a roller over the image to remove bubbles and better adhere the print before putting it in the sun.
@thefrugalcrafter

yes or a sheet of glass on top would keep it pressed tightly

Very cool Lindsay! I think the box came out great (except for the air bubble) Do you think it would work on a stretched canvas?
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 7 лет назад
if you want to do it on a canvas I recommend buying unprimed canvas from the craft store, prewash it and make your print and wash it as you would per their instructions, and then stretch the canvas on the frame. You can then seal it with a waterbased varnish if you want to protect the fabric. Avoid an oil based varnish hat might deteriorate the raw canvas.

I actually really like the result minus the air bubble. Looks different and I like that kinda thing. I'm so surprised I've never heard of this!
