@@michaelmccarthy4615 - Drug addicts are sick. They should _never ever_ be imprisoned for it. Instead, replace them with child predators. We _need_ to increase incarceration times of child predators! Life sentences for baby rapists, they can NEVER be rehibilated. They create drug addicts. We MUST cut them out of society. While they're serving time, they can _finally_ be productive members of society. THEY can be the work force, behind bars of private prisons. We CAN rehabilitate drug users. By the way most are using to numb their pain, caused BY the child abuse they've suffered! Let's stop the cycle, save our countries _Billions_ of dollars by doing it. The Neitherland's & several other countries proved it works. Over 15 years ago, they solved their opioid crisis AND their war on drugs at the same time for less money. They now have clean _SAFE_ streets. We can't say the same. It's only getting worse, every year.

This video hit really close to home. It’s not easy being incarcerated. The vast majority of the people I was locked up with were good people who just made some mistakes or were dealing with an addiction such as myself. It was one of the most difficult situations of my life. I lost everything I had worked for when I got my possession charges. Making it through is just the first obstacle. There’s so many more once you get out. I’m clean now, will be graduating with my bachelors Spring 2021 and starting on my Masters. And the’ll work everyday for 12 hours chained up together working in the sun being overlooked by armed guards, with them working long hours everyday they won’t have anytime to do anything shady or gang related, every hour of the day they will all have somthing to do and they will all be overlooked in groups all day until they are in their cells about to go to sleep

i have recently been studying the US's prison system and it has really led me to question the normalization of prisons. the us makes up for 20% of the world's incarcerated population even though it only holds 5% of the world's entire population. i personally think it is because of capitalism as many businesses work with the prison industry for cheap labor. why do we lock people up for "bad" actions instead of really looking into why they committed that action? crime is a symptom of something wrong in society.

Unfortunately you're asking an incredibly difficult question. If anything locking people away in a disorganized system where they might fall through the cracks is the easy way out. In Europe people who are in prison are allowed to leave one weekend a month. They are allowed to go home and visit their families. Why? Because if you lock someone away from society for 10 years they won't know how to act when they get out. People become institutionalized quick. By allowing inmates to leave and see their family it is an incentive for them to behave in prison.
@atomic4650

I used to work for a phone company that provided phone service for prisons. So many people would call outraged because they had these extremely high phone bills in edition to their regular basic phone service. The federal prisons were the worse. Rates at that time were $8 and $9 per 4 minutes. I've listened too many mothers, children, wives, etc, cry because they couldn't afford to talk to they loved one. I guess I'm too compassionate to work in that type of environment because I used to clear their lines when possible. Not only does the system punish the inmates but their families as well. Unless they are murderers or sexual predictors I think they should have access to cell phones with some restrictions.

I knew someone most recent that got in prison due to DUI. He was allowed to make calls but on a pay phone like. You had to add minutes to this card to talk to him. They really tried to put a spin on that, acting like these people deserve to have a joyful happy life. And in some cases that might be true with their crimes weren’t that bad. But the reality is as many people are in there because they destroyed other peoples lives including taking their lives from them and then the trickle down effect of all the pain and hurt that it caused the family and friends. Losing a loved one leaves a hole in your heart that nothing can fill. People that weren’t even involved suffer the rest of their lives with sadness and depression and emptiness. So this is a very serious topic where all parties feelings should be considered. Most people don’t go to jail because they were good productive citizens. I feel for any family members of victims that happen to see this. What a slap in the face.😢

Its called punishment. Doing without because of your actions. Being punished because you robbed killed stole etc. Non violent crimes people shouldn't be doing long prison sentences easier time with more privileges. I do agree more needs to be done to integrate prisoners back into the community when they get out. Teach them a skill like welding or plumbing.

Part of the punishment of incarceration is not being connected to people.
@mathiaspint6808
@mathiaspint6808 3 года назад
I believe that the justice system should have preventing crime as a primary goal. Cutting prisoners off from their families and everything they know and dehumanising them the way the US prison system does is detrimental to the inmates' mental health. This only makes it only harder for the inmates to be reintroduced to society and increases the odds of them ending up behind bars again. It's really just a question of what service you expect the prison system to serve in society, if you believe it only serves to punish than the USA got it right, but I personally believe that other countries such as Norway (where former prison inmates only have a 10% chance of committing a new crime once they get out of prison vs. the US' recidivism rate of 83%) have a better approach. These countries use the time during which the inmate in incarcerated to better themselves instead of punish them, this includes taking their mental health into account. The only punishment should be the taking away of their freedom everything else, in my opinion at least, is cruel and unnecessary punishment.

@Lucky Duck yeah and if you let people commit crimes and the punishment is only that they have to take an all expense paid vacation for a few months while they still get to log on to Facebook everyday and text women and friends, then you give even less reasons to follow even the most mundane laws. you seem pretty naive to the fact that there are legit criminals in jail that use the phones to traffic drugs inside the jail, and to order hits outside the jail. I get that it makes you"feel bad" for people, but people make their own decisions and deal with their own consequences.
@dominick1lucero
@dominick1lucero 3 года назад
@Lucky Duck first, unless you did research on that specific prison and those specific inmates you honestly have no idea what they're in there for or for how long. Second, I don't see how me repeating what the phones are used for matters at all? But ok. Third, your original argument seemed to be that I was inhumane for suggesting prisoners shouldn't have cell phones, yet now your bringing up COs and blaming them for bringing them in. But aren't they doing something that you support? Bringing phones to the inmates? Fourth, of course not having their calls recorded is what they're after especially if you're dealing drugs or ordering hits 🤦🏽‍♂️ See, you replied to my comment with what you thought was an opposing perspective, but you have no thought behind it. You typed out this long response with a bunch of "more than likely" and "if this were the case". Those are opinions. Your entitled to yours. even if it's dumb.
