Kyla Massie debuted as a member of Pristin after Produce 101. She was the Maknae and a talented Rapper/Singer/ dancer that was bullied by the public for her weight.
I agree... Especially as her body is completely normal and in a healthy weight range. I am horrified by the toxic (and often severely underweight) body image the Kpop world is feeding us.
As if being non ultra skinny affects her entertainment. Her job is *entertainer* and she does her job just fine no matter if she's twig thin or average citizen size
@@yyg4632 I agree 100 percent! And it doesn't even make her more beautiful or attractive id she is extremely skinny! She has a healthy looking body and is glowing... and that makes her super beautiful
i cannot imagine the amount of sadness she must have felt at 15. the fact that she was a trainee since she was 9 and trained for 6 years, only to be treated like shit by the public is heart-breaking. those so called fans should be ashamed of themselves, as well as those reporters who refused to take her picture. glad to see she looks much more happier now
That was disturbing the way they ignored her and continued taking photos of other girls and she still had a smile on her face. I think she is a real beauty.
I think it's rude how fans said she didn't care for her job because of her weight when she trained literally all her life to have that job in the first place. Other girls play in the park at 9 years old,she trained to be an idol. Must have been insanely hard to be judged by people who don't know half of what's going on with you behind closed curtains. The weight could've easily been a medical thing too but people don't even consider things that don't fit "the average person".
neitzens act like she ruined the group when she still was in it and then turn the opposite way and said the group got ruined because of her💀. All because of her weight.
The fact that a kind, morally strong, disciplined and principled teenager girl who was never rude to her bullies and had the strength to move on from all this isn't considered a real "idol". Well, you're right. SHE IS A QUEEN. Sincerely, someone who isn't even a kpop fan.
Honestly a lot of korean "idols" aren't really idols in the sense of the word. She is a great idol for anyone. Love yourself, doesn't matter what anyone thinks. I wish she hadn't left than she could have been a role model for how to stand up to bullies but I guess that's to much to ask in the Kpop industry. At least she didn't go on starvation diets.
@@alinasmith5737I really don't know much about kpoo, but isn't it mostly about sexualizing? I don't think people care about the music part, for example I have never seen a single Facebook post that would talk about anything else, when it came to k pop artists, then their physical beauty. So it seems to me like complaining that an athletic swimmer needs to be thin to be fast in water, if you didn't want to have that responsibility, why would you pick a vocation that demands you be built that way.
@@Enkabard I don't know what groups you're in but I only like 1 group (stray kids) and I like them for their music. Yes, they have great characters and yes they are hot sometimes but I like them for the music they make. I listened to the first song I got recommend from them (Maniac) on Spotify without knowing what they actually look like and was surprised that I didn't hate the song. If you're only watching Kpop to look at hot girls... There's other websites for that. They are artists they deserve respect and you have no right to body shame them.
@@alinasmith5737 i have never watched or heard single song or performance from any k pop group. Facebook for some reasons recommends those posts I have zero interest in. All were male k pop groups, and their female fans not a single time ever commented on their singing abilities, or anything beyond how cute they are. I'm going on a limb here to assume female k pop groups serve exactly the same purpose.
@@Enkabard no. Yes theres a lot of fangirling and a lot of fans like to praise how cute/hot whatever the idols are. But it's not their job. That's like if Jennifer Lawrence did a photoshoot and the pictures are posted online and a bunch of people commented how cute/hot whatever she is, it's still not her job. She's an actress. They are singers/rappers/dancers. And I really don't understand why you're defending a bunch of morons body shaming an artist. You have no idea of Kpop and your first instinct is to defend cruelty and abuse? You're giving major incel vibes my dude.
The hate Kyla got while in Pristin still angers me to this day. You can never win as a female idol in Korea. If you're a normal weight you get called fat, if you're too skinny they call you a skeleton. I'm just glad that she's happy and living her best life away from the toxicity that is the idol world.
@@xa1239 Yes, that's true, but I was specifically referring to the girls that are on the ends of each of the spectrums (either too "fat" or too "skinny" according to netizens), not the idols that get praised for having the "ideal" figure. Even if you have a great body, netizens love to pick on other features (adittude, personality, etc).
It's extra ridiculous whenever I see kpop fans, especially k-netz fatshame girls who clearly are a healthy weight or AT BEST a few kgs overweight and slightly chubby (normal at that age), whilst one of the most loved and famous male kpop idols out there is Shindong, a morbidly obese man who even talked himself about how badly he needs to lose weight for his heath. Yet he has never gotten as much hate as female idols get for just gaining even the SLIGHTEST amount of weight! Just looks as Jeongyeon from TWICE and all the hate she got and still gets, though in her case the stylists also don't give her properly fitted outfits and make it all worse. Either way it says a lot about Korea and their two-faced mindset, where male idols can often get away with way more then female idols. Not very shocking though in a country where streamers end their lives cause they got accused of being feminists by male streamers and got death threats for it (happened this year, she was named Cho Jangmi, very sad). Misogyny at it again.
@@hnyuq4049 it is ridiculously worse in Korea..... the Korean beauty standards are absolutely insane.. and the double standards and sexism is basically seen as a norm there..
Til this day I will never forgive the amount of hate that she received. I was new to K-pop during this time and it was disgusting to see such a talented girl being bullied like this.
Seriously and especially that cameraman how could they just take photo of other members when a very beautiful girl is standing in front of them the fans who spoke badly just don't deserve her she is a gem in she is pretty the way she is no one have the right to say about it I don't know why some people are like this
this is the reason why kids should NOT be trainees and debut at a young age. imagine being 15 and getting blamed for your group’s downfall just because you gained weight. this whole industry is a joke.
It’s just what’s expected of an idol, their image will always be judged and being overweight above all will immediately get you criticism. That’s what an idol is.
Asian countries seem to have an extreme problem with horrible treatment of "overweight" (100 pounds is apperantly overweight) woman especially. It's disgusting but people don't talk about it as much as they should.
Im glad Kyla came back to the US. She is absolutely adorable and we'd never call her fat or even chubby! She, even at her heaviest, was a normal weight. Im sure this was good for her mental health. The fans should be deeply ashamed of the trauma caused.
@@vsprout9316true, but kpop is an industry where image is what an idol sells on. They don’t sell purely on talent, visuals and reputation is also a part of it. That’s the reality of the industry and the fact was: Kyla did not fit the image needed to as a kpop idol.
BUt it happens in the US too..remember how Taylor Swift got so many remarks and jokes for gaining weight? It's sad but people in the spot light get the best of love and yet the worst kind of hate
Woah the part when it showed her and her other group members singing and everyone goes silent when it’s her turn made my heart sink for her. People can be so cruel.
the fact that people had the audacity to boycott a girl just because she didn't fit in society's toxic beauty standards is making me sick. i can't even begin to imagine how stressful it must've been for kyla. i hope she knows she's beautiful just the way she is.
@Muraki Chiyo She doesn't look fat though. And that's not by "American standards" my dad was a Haitian man who preferred bigger women, so American women aren't considered "fat" according to him. In fact, that's a modern European idea that thick people are all "fat".
@Muraki Chiyo Hun, having a little bit of extra weight around the lower tummy isnt fat. Its actually healthy and she doesn't have to change anything about herself. You need to get over your internalized fatphobia, boo 💅
@Muraki Chiyo You're right. You're just generally fatphobic. I assumed you were overweight yourself since you stated you were "thicker." Turns out you just hate fat people. Hunny, you're watching a video about a K-pop idol. If you're into K-pop, then you're already an active participant of toxic internet culture. This isn't really relevant at all, and I didn't ask for your advice over how and were I spend my time. You're just trying to deflect/move the goalpost, eapecially seeing how much your ramble turns into an entire brick of diatribe. You seem triggered. You know that the Haitian guy above said he would consider Kayla skinny? Maybe he's right. Ever consider that your idea of thinness might be rooted in white supremacy?? A black person told you that your opinion of fatness is subjective and you just blow him off to reiterate your SUBJECTIVE opinion on a LITERAL 15 YEAR OLD GIRL'S WEIGHT. (Also weird that you're so concerned with a child's weight). You should be more considerate when conversation pertains to culture, because you look silly when you speak over BLPOC. Also, not true. As long as you're not morbidly obese, which can be measured with a method rooted in science, carrying "extra weight," isn't necessarily unhealthy. In fact, recent studies show that a thin person who practises an unhealthy lifestyle will have more health problems compared to an overweight individual who lives a healthy lifestyle. Please do your research before speak!
The things those hosts said like “she’s pretty and skinny enough” and “these mean comments are breaking my heart” are actually really sweet, I know of some hosts that would jump at the opportunity to make some backhanded comments
i think the host with the wig is lee sangmin. he was the creator of a girlgroup in the 90s and is known for being kind so maybe that's why he has more empathy
I am horrified by this… not just the comments but the way they boycotted her publicly that’s so humiliating and honestly inhuman. She’s a fucking person not a robot that can be customized based off of your ideals. She was just a girl and she deserved far better it saddens me that no one spoke up for her and genuinely supported her during that time. She’s so strong and incredibly gorgeous and talented … to have your talents over shadowed by something as menial as weight… just heart wrenching. everyone has a right to their own bodies if u ask me and all body types should be respected. I can’t believe we live in a world this superficial and cruel.
As someone who was actually in the pristin fandom predebut and while they were active, I can say Kyla did receive a huge amount of support from international fans. Please don’t lump us in with the crazy netizens lol
I think with the big push for Kpop now has a viable possibility to be successful internationally (and lets face it a lot more fans and money to be made just by sheer population from the United States alone (example California pop. is est 38 mil, South Korea is 51 mil, that's just one state of 50.) ) I think the beauty standard with loosen up, not go away completely, but it would be in there best interest to not force diets or bully people out of the industry because it can have major repercussions on deals and fans in other countries and how they support either the group or the company. Lets face it money talks and will probably be the only thing to really get different looks from idols as a whole. Kyla was such an asset with her skill set that could have been a major hit with international fans, I hope the next generation of girls have a bit more freedom in their appearance.
It seems like it went far beyond this, especially when those photograhers shamelessly ignored her/refused to take pictures of her while she took the time poses for them and you can hear fans go completely silent, refusing to cheer for her at concerts. Poor girl must have felt like everybody hated her
I'm happy for her. She's working in medical and Psychology and is gonna make a positive difference in so many peoples lives. :) Kyla was too smart for the idol life, turns out she was more than a pretty face. Edit: wow so many triggered people. Yeah I'ma say it, not like a fraction of idols today can sing or rap *they are CASTED FOR THEIR BODIES/ FACE. They're just going to lip sync their whole life anyways* Not like the most talented vocalists Luna, Wendy, Ailee, CL, Wheein & Suhyun are all forgotten and underrated because they're seen as chubby and not pretty/ basic. -Yall know lots of idols are dropouts right? Some idols also got caught fabricating/ cheating on their tests. -Most idols come from rich parents and privileged special idol schools that allow them to study easier than normal students. -Most idols don't qualify for college and have to get in by their reputation or buy their way in. That's why all the flopped idols default to "beauty influencer" after disbandment. -Ntm EVERY idol to date has said their training years were the hardest. Actual idol life is really slow and not difficult (unless you have 50 comebacks a year like twice), so yeah it gets easier after debut and most the things they learned they forget once casted as a visual. *- Idols don't ever say the singing or dancing or long concerts are the hardest part. Every one says dieting is the hardest part or always having to be dressed up bc of paparazzi. LOOKS ARE ALL THAT THEY HAVE TO WORK ON*
@@curerose6906 i don’t think they really meant that other idols are dumb, but rather how people treat them, they treat them just like pretty faces, and often focus more on their looks than even their talent or how smart they can be, one example that comes to mind is hyunjin from skz, and how other trainees told him that he didn’t need to be good at anything and that he would debut just because of his face, I imagine this happens a lot more with female idols
okay but to have utter silence when performing and having people cheer for your other members must be so heartbreaking, if i was her i would've cried on stage most likely i don't know how she pulled it off. she seems to be much happier and living a better life in america and no longer facing criticism! :)
@@aniyah444 i’m just saying garam did something awful, but not getting someone to cheer for you is awful as well. But i’m not saying she didnt deserve that though.
I went through something similar, started wearing corsets and push up bras, and suddenly I wasn’t bullied as much?!? I am utterly pissed at the fact someone can act the same, talk the same, and be the same, yet if they “look skinny” some people will automatically start being nice to you. This is what’s wrong with the world.
I went to high school in Taiwan 2015-2019, which drew on K-beauty a lot for beauty standards. I was also curvier in hs and was often told that i should lose weight. Since I graduated I got more into sports and now I have a more athletic body type. When I went back to visit this fall, I was told that my abs would scare men and I should eat more🤣🤣Both times I’ve been at a healthy weight so it’s safe to assume it’s always been about aesthetics and not really “health.”
I follow her on Insta. She's still getting fatshamed in her DMs, it's so sad. The way she was treated AS A CHILD was actually disgusting tho. People should be ashamed.
pls tell me there are ppl on there supporting her too tho :( it’s absolutely horrendous how she has been treated, and i can’t believe it is still going on right now
Korea has a huge problem with hate, bullying and sexism. Popular example another idol Sulli was extremely talented then people was attacking, body shaming and hating her for no reason. Then when she killed herself, it became big news, there were many people mourning and feel sorry for her, they say they will do more to prevent something like it happening again. But people are still attacking her even when she passed away and they are still bullying other idols! The scary thing is that they are able to get away with it and they treat it as norm even they know its not right.
Kyla really debuted at a bad time, it's so sad. Because there are MULTIPLE female idols right now with her exact body shape and size who are thriving, like Purple Kiss's Swan and NMIXX's Jiwoo. I wonder how different her career could've been had she debuted a few years later 😔
Secret was 3rd generation (2009?)and they had reg average body types for awhile...all 4 girls were not supper skinny...(3 yrs ?)....later on they did had to meet those standards...
Jiwoo isn’t thriving… Now that she lost weight, she is. But before she was body shamed and she finally dieted. Kyla should’ve done the same but we all know what happened 😔
She was a teenager, my god, it’s disgusting how people can feel brave enough behind a screen to comment and insult a TEENAGER about her body, I wanted to cry when I saw that video years ago of her at the fansign where the photographers refused to take pictures of her
It doesn't matter that she's a teenager, it's still sad that they was calling her fat, it doesn't matter the age, even if she was 20 something it would still be sad
@@Ash_NuggTato It does matter, of course to talk about someone else’s body is disgusting regardless of their age, but to speak in that way about a teenager, a literal still developing child is even more fucked up, I’m an adult now, and I can take comments like that in a more mature way cause I’ve learned what to pay attention to and what not to, but for a teenager I imagine it must’ve been a thousand times harder
It’s sad that people lack the basic humanity and, frankly speaking, the class to think it’s okay to bully someone. Clearly this was not restricted to the web since her own production co and the media did some of this as well as the live audience. Bullying is common in kdrama, the U.S., and I suspect it’s universal. That doesn’t make it okay. It’s actually disturbing and a turn off. I was once disgusted by how fans of a U.S. soap opera trash-talked a teen actress because she was portrayed as a villain for the moment (she turned out to be good). This was worse … So called adults attacking her appearance and voice, because they didn’t like her character … This was a teenage actor. I definitely said something about it. We have to do better. Bullying and intolerance should never be acceptable and/or justified.
Omg I remember when Suzy from Miss A was a teen, Super Junior Leetuk who is a grown man also fat shamed a teen to tell her to lose weight. You would think it would get better but Korea is always one step behind when it comes to body, skin & mental health ._.
It’s so disgusting how a ton of people (most being adults) bullied a teenager out of her dream. I can’t believe they continued to do that even after she left Pristin and was releasing music on her own terms. She didn’t deserve any of this treatment.
To be honest, I don't think it was her dream. Her brother has mentioned that it was Kyla's mom who was obsessed with her being a k-pop star and pushed her to go to Korea and train. Which in my opinion makes everything even worse--She was bullied for years about her body when she didn't even want to be a k-pop idol in the first place.
I agree there is no real reason to bully or harrass a child. But if you REALLY think she wanted to stay in prisine why didn't she go on the diet? not anything crazy or starving yourself. She would have looked like the other girls if she put the same work into learning the routines as she did eating a modest amount! Which makes me think she was either very depressed and binging or she was lowkey trying to quit??
@@LittleHatori she shouldnt have to look a certain way to please ppl. its not their concern what her weight looks like. she shouldnt have to go on a diet js bc ppl are bullying her...
I love the fact that her story didn't change for better because she lost weight, but because she was able to find her own happiness. Your body does not define your value and I think that we need more Idols with natural bodies (doesn't matter thinner or thicker) or the bodies that THEY want to have, so some K-pop fans finally realice that what it's important is not the appearance but the talent and hard work.
As ruthless as it may seem now, back then it was survival of the fittest. ex. Blackpinks Jennie 2018-2019. She had a great figure, an amazing personality, and was a very talented girl who even released her own solo debut! But unfortunately was also a MAJOR kpop punching bag back then because "she looked mean" 😐. Came up with every possible excuse to hate on her after that one online statement by a net. "she dances lazily" "is she glaring??" Knetz- no. Netz in general. They dont care about talent. They dont care about personality or body type! They hate whoever they want and try to justify it with a surface level reason. (Ex. Literally half of momoland.) Times have changed, so it isnt as bad. But back then I can only imagine how hard it must have been to be an idol in korea.
But if every type gets to be a kpop star, then what's so special about being a kpop star? I don't think standards should be lowered. Look at all the successful groups (BP, STAYC, ASSPhuh?, TWICE)- they are all uniformally thin and trim and feminine. None of them are "thicc."
@@stannnleee3440 [be warned, this is a pretty long rant..] so being thin is the only special thing about being a kpop star? I think I may understand what you were trying to say, but you worded it COMPLETELY wrong. (Or i'm wrong and you are actually as blunt as your comment). I understand that kpop isnt just about music. And its not about dance or talent either. Its never been. Idols get surgery upon surgery just to look the part. Im not asking to lower the beauty standard, but to (maybe) be more accepting, not turn idols into ghosts with EDs who only eat ice for lunch, and not to ruin their self esteem because they have a minor muffin top. Its sad. An example is Momo, Jihyo, and jungyeon from twice. Momo- as a trainee (though already particularly skinny) refused to eat normal food. Heard from one of her reality shows she chose to only eat ice for all meals of the day. Jihyo- was told she was too curvy and weird looking to be in the shot, and was asked to step out of it. she hid behind a member after hearing the harsh words. Jungyeon, which happened recently gained weight after coming back from her mental heath hiatus. Instead of coming back to the same warm and loving audience who supported her 7 months ago, she came back to a disgusted one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZvjYyRMTM3A.html Notice anything about these three girls? None of them are fat, overweight, OR have their guts spilling out of their shirts. They were skinny, but not as skinny as everyone else was. And that was what they got. Im not asking for any standard to be lowered. Im asking for people to stop acting like A-holes and projecting themselves onto their idol.
I remember being so happy when she debuted and she was instantly my bias. There was finally an idol that had my body type and I tried supporting wherever I could. I really hope she is doing better now. People are so cruel and evil.
@Veronica Hernandez can't please everyone is one thing but a large amount of fans working together to bully her out of the industry because the company doesn't resond to their ridiculous claims and needs is next lvl ._.
I'm not a Kpop consumer at all. But I still like to learn about it. I feel absolutely heartbroken for Kyla. I knew that Korean physical standards were totally insane, especially for idols... But I'm so appalled at the disgusting, disheartening, evil treatment this young girl received from the public. We talk about toxic music producers and corporations, but what about the behavior of the public and journalists ? How can you harass, bully and destroy such a beautiful, talented, brave young girl without shame?
I’m not a fan of Kpop so this is my first time hearing of this girl, but she is beautiful and clearly very talented. To put up with that type of shaming, she must have a very strong spirit. God bless her and I’m positive there’s better things in her future
Wow, I didn’t realize how fkn terrible people were to her. Like everyone and their mother. That’s horrendous. Kyla, you’re an inspiration to me. Live life, love, and peace to all.
The fact that a 15 year old girl was so hated for simply having a healthy weight for her age is so surreal to me. Like, do netizens really think that weighting below 49 kg is healthy? Are they even worried about that?
yet she smiled and tried to give her very best to not show any hurt feelings but still give and proof the audience she‘s worth everything and to give them a good show.
besides ofc she had trouble keeping her weight or losing it when there was the WHOLE NATION critizing her!! how should she lose weight with negativity?! ofc she‘s literally eating it all up inside and outside. thanks for the video. everything was said very greatly!! I also liked when u put in that clip of those two men finally complimenting her!!
That poor girl oh my god. Thats not even CLOSE to looking chubby, thats called HEALTHY. She was healthy! Next to all those skinny ass girls of course she stood out, she was the only healthy looking one. Thats ridiculous. She should be appreciate for her talented. Shes a talented individual. for me, the worst part of it all is that even in the "we like" and "wee-woo" promotions, kyla was being criticized and yet she went to all the music promotions (stages) and had a beautiful smile, a great stage presence. I can imagine how much she must have suffered, but she was still smiling in all the pristin videos you put in this video. in the pictures too, she was smiling. she went to the fansigns, even though she got all the hate and being ignored, she was still smiling, looked happy/satisfied and did what they asked. i remember when TWICE tzuyu got ignored/badly talked about her at a fansign (I'M NOT COMPARING THEM, JUST COMMENTING), she just lowered the mic and walked away, standing in the corner. Kyla stayed ahead, was happy and faced it. she was so strong. she was only 15, this hurt me A LOT, people can't even think that MAYBE she is so young and can loose a lot of weigh fast, just wait a bit. no, people kept commenting badly, calling her fat, stopped supporting her, and her weight was NORMAL, only the other idols and group members were underweight.
she is about the same body type as i am. when i say it hits home it does. if ppl bully someone off their job and their livelihood because they look "fat" (she looks healthier than 99% of the idols) then i cant stop thinking what they think of a regular human being like me who has the same body type. i cant stop this sick to my stomach feeling.
She is healthy but isn't taking her of herself. Look at image in 3:27, when you looked at her dancing, her belling was bouncing in and out, not a nice thing to look at.
Her strength and beauty knows no bounds! She was absolutely stunning in every phase and I can’t believe she handled such criticism such false criticism with such grace. I would’ve crumbled. I’ve never admired an idol so much for how gracefully she took it, and how brave and strong she was to handle it. She moved forward, loving herself, no matter what which is the coolest thing ever.
That's disgusting. She was of average weight. In order to lose more weight, she would've had to go into a caloric deficit. If her nutrient intake was average and that's just her body type, this would require starving herself and heavy exercise to get her down to "typical" idol girl group proportions. For a 15 y/o whose brain and body are still in the development process, it could've severely impacted her growth and health. Memory loss, nerve damage (peroneal palsy), organ failure down the line, etc. South Korea and all these kpop fans need to re-evaluate their damn standards.
She could have lost weight healthy, but it would have taken time and she was just 15. She might have lost weight naturally over the years as she grew up but they never even gave her a chance.
@@epmeats that is true, when I was 12 I became veery big and chubby, but I also have to add I was growing up a LOT. This is unrelated, but can you make a video on Wonyoung? People keep complaining about how skinny she is and it’s so annoying. I wish people would leave her alone about her weight
I was surprised that she could manage to not badmouth anyone and respected her members when she made her own channel after everything she went through. I was the "fat and ugly" one in my school dance group and it truly does leave you with a lasting emotional damage. I sincerely hope Kyla is happier than ever now, seeing her strength gives me inspiration.
Sorry. That picture of her belly sticking out at 3:27 isn't a nice to look at. Stop with the body positivity, you probably come from a country with a 40% obesity rate and think it's okay for girls at 15 to look like that.
@@kvntlord_ I'm probably younger than you. And even I'm much older than you so what. Eyes are still eyes no matter how old they are, they see facts. Hope you understand little piggy.
This baby girl. Honestly the strength it took for her to continue working hard and acting like nothing was happening, literally right in front of her, is inspiring. How dare netizens treat ANYONE like this?!?!
I have a similar body type to her and I love seeing girls who look like me onstage. I don't see why people have to put so much pressure on idols, some of who are literal MINORS to change their bodies when they already have so much talent.
There has to be something in the Kpop industry that causes people to become vile. The kpop fandom is so odd and addictive and toxic. Even me, the deeper I get into kpop, the more critical I've seen myself become, and we all need to be aware of how quickly kpop can turn us into critical assholes so that we can make sure we never become ones ourselves. But so many people seem to have fallen to that low and started criticising and hating on idols for the smallest things and creating a toxic community
@@dkskaobd6320 I've never commented toxic like i did after becoming a kpop fan. It's just really in the kpop world and the fandoms to be toxic and be obsessed. I felt way better detaching myself to be just a casual kpop listener without "stanning" a group. But looking at the whole world nowadays, everything is toxic when you involve somewhere. Like everything and everyone are toxic, the real life people, the internet people are all toxic. Being a fat person myself I've been subjected to so much body shaming. The world is definitely not headed towards the better.
@@dkskaobd6320 Wow, I've been a Kpopper for almost 15 years and I don't even care about makeup nor diet lol. And I don't pay too much attention to anyone else's appearance either. I think, as long as we are clean, live healthily, and dress modestly, it's enough. But even if they don't, I never criticize them either.
RIGHT?? I was so relieved someone had her back until even he turned on her!! I can't imagine how painful that must've felt when she was already on the ground 😭😭 to have her own family stab her in the back?? And over FALSE accusations when she only wished him well? She's so strong
but are you sure that's the real account of her brother? because at 8:39 his account is "@LukeyMassie" BUT at 9:35 on the left it is "@bluerazorstorm" and on the right is "@lukehmassie" either he changed his @ several times, or that was just someone impersonating him (I'm not siding with him if he really is that shit, it's just my observation)
8:00 ooooooh several points were made. when the general public supports "thick" idols its a very specific type of thick 🥴 that goes for both knetz and international fans
@@felmargego2534 you meant normal weight*. Not one single under 100lb idol is a normal weight. They're malnourished and praised for it, normalcy is a sin as an idol 😅
Seeing an idol with such a similar body figure as me was incredibly inspiring. It’s ridiculous seeing so many fans being fatmisic towards someone with a HEALTHY body! I wish the K-Pop industry was more diverse and accepting of everyone
"people were appalled pledis refused to force her to lose weight or diet" - EXCUSE ME?? i bet that most of these people, who thought that way, were the first ones to scream out loud if other idols(that were skinny and pretty in their eyes) would have been forced to do just that. talk about double standard. i love kpop n' all but i"ll never understand how people can wish for OTHER people to sacrifice their health or other things just to fit their taste, and with such malice.. as well as zero empathy as to what this can do to those people..
Not gonna lie, I was always hopeful that Kyla might potentially change the game for idols. She literally proved what lots of people always try to deny, to this day, that one can perform properly no matter if they are skinny or normal-sized (or even chubby!) and I loved seeing that as a bigger person myself so so much... Seeing how she was basically cursed out of the business is simply heartbreaking considering that true talent is so rare to find in many people nowadays because we are so focused on overperforming at school, at work, etc. and therefore have very little time to explore what's possible...
This is an old comment and this isn't necessarily about k-pop, but she reminds me a lot of mexican gymnast named Alexa Moreno. She is a thick-built girl and she's also an olympic medalist! I suggest you look her up to find another amazing example that proves that thin is NOT the same as healthy, fit or strong!
Lol I remember JYP's cursed mindset about weight made me wheez up until now whenever he says that their weight affects their dancing when most dancers in America are just as thicc as those girls he called "overweight"
She's seriously pretty 😊 I'm so sorry for all the trouble she went through. That is so far from okay. She is a gorgeous woman with a beautiful figure. All that should matter is a person's health, mentally, emotionally, and physically, and I hope she is at that place. It takes a lot of courage and strength to go through this, so I commend her for it, and I hope nothing like this ever happens again. It should not have in the first place. These kinds of people are absolutely horrible, and the fact that they are comfortable putting such ruthlessness on blast is appalling.
I'm having a harder and harder time seeing the appeal in K-pop. They don't really get famous for their talent or creativity, they get famous when their managers hire good songwriters and choreographers, and have careful marketing. People like them for the image they project: usually a group of talented perfect friends who sing and dance together, and have a perfect life. Usually they have character archetypes and sometimes they go through a period of growth (ie having their first solo) so the fans can be proud of them and get hype. The dark side of kpop is kids being trapped in a company from a young age due to debt, the plastic surgery they pretty much have no choice but to go through with, the mandatory starvation, the dancing until you faint, the no leaving the facility rules, the no forms of outside communication rules, the no dating rules, the like 16 hour plus workday, the fact that they have next to no autonomy in their life at all... almost everyone agrees that it's bad and should stop but the MOMENT someone doesn't do all those things, all the kpop fans just dogpile on them. Everyone knows they're not perfect people and that they don't have perfect lives, but if they ever do anything normal (like having a normal BMI) they get dragged so hard for it. Not so perfect anymore, they're almost like regular people or something! Can't have that. They have to be happy and pretty beyond anything we could ever hope to achieve ourselves
It’s because kpop is a marketing tool for fans to live vicariously through. In South Korea life is very strict and regimented with enormous pressure, so they nitpick as an out. For international fans they’re usually using the group as an emotional outlet of some kind hence all the stan wars. An attack on their group is an attack on their identity. It’s not really gonna change until this current gen that’s into kpop grows up and gets busy with life
4:01 this is a good point and a huge reason why I think Pristin (and all IOI groups failed) why the fuq did Pledis debut a 10 member group when they clearly only cared about the 5 member s that got famous through Produce 101? Gugudan, Weki meki and Dia did the same thing, it's almost comical bc gugudan pulled the same sub unit crap and shocker it blew up in their face.
I agree, they should have made a smaller group but Pledis is kind of weird in a way and they began to make bigger groups in the past few years. For example: Seventeen.
in kpop i often feel like, people completely forgot that idols were originally ment to be musicians in the first place. Within the last two decades or so the image of idols shifted from crating music and being an actuall artist to basically prioritysing good choreography and looking pretty and showing off a perfect and flawless image far from realistic standards. It is heartbreaking but not surprising, that lots of kpop fans nowadays can't wrap their head around the fact, that an idol would actually debut for MAKING AND PERFORMING MUSIC as their carreer, to show off talent in music and being a creator of musical art. Cause NO, the job of idols was not ment, to make money of their looks, as many malicous comments sad in the video. Guess what, haters, some idols actually joined into the MUSIC industry to persue crearing and performing music and to make music their live and job. Like, go get a fan of the model industry to see unhealthy beautystandards and cheer for people looking pretty. But can we please make kpop a place again, where some interest at least goes to the music and singing/rapping/composing itself, where musicians are actually ment to make music. That is so sad and so wrong.
That's exactly why kpop is popular. You think the whole "kpop" popularity is just for their music? Nah kpop is only 10% music, the rest is just fandom culture, fun, drama, toxicity, obsession...
@@shakira7301 yes I am aware, that that's just the way, kpop is today, but i wish, it was different. I don't expect kpop to completely turn around, and it is ok, if idols are the way, fans expect them to be, cause yes, that is indeed what made kpop so popular. But it would be nice, if it was also accepted, when idols are not that way and when they wanted to be an idol for the sake of music
Korea prioritizes beauty OVER brains/talents in many aspects in life so like it or not, talent doesn't matter if you can't fit into their beauty standard
You are wrong though. K-pop was originally inspired by the popularity of J-pop and the main job of an idol singer in Japan was to bring happiness to the people, acting cute and being funny. That's why they called idols - because people idolize them. Some of the Japanese idols didn't even had musical/dance abilities and yet they were and are still idols. It's just Koreans took it to the extreme level around 2 generations of idols. The Korean beauty standards got harsher, the training period got harder and the music quality has gotten better. But still, idols were never meant to be musicians and artists but because of K-pop's sudden popularity many companies are trying to outsold one another at certain field. They took the word idol to the extreme level.
@@shakira7301 K-pop is not only popular but also has loyal fanbase. For instance, their photos are liked heavily in insta. They appear to be superhumans with little/no flaws. I wanna get some break of all this. Ughh
I cant help but get sad thinking how different it couldve turned out if she debuted in this era. More and more people are accepting and kind to idols like her in these times. I feel sorry that i wasnt a kpop fan before, i wouldve loved and supported her all throughout
This poor kid, I hope she was able to heal from this and leave this all behind. I also hope that every single person that bullied her, gets what they deserve.
Fans *need to stop* acting like they can tell if idols are healthy or not. I remember people saying Kyla looked super unhealthy but now we know she was injured during their 2nd comeback and thats probably why she gained weight resting or possibly because of meds. People say the same thing about skinny idols like Rose claiming she's sick when she shows no signs? Literally idols like Kyla, Rosie, Ailee and Somi can dance and sing just fine with energy, it's not like their weight is stopping them from living their daily lives but fans just LOVE the drama.
people always want to insert themselfs in somebody elses life.... Someone's weight/looks is not your business. We are not their freinds, families or health care providers. And yes, people love adding to drama way too much.
Blackpink are the last idols I would really worry about as far as weight. Theyve said they don't diet except mentioning avoiding foods that make them bloated right before doing something, which is normal and fine they're still eating something. Plus, only 3/4 are super super thin. Jisoo is in no way at ALL fat, but I think if YG was pushing them to be stick thin, Jisoo would also be their size. I think Jennie Rosé and Lisa are just all naturally super thin, not because they're starving themselves. I'm not a doctor, so I can't say if they're healthy or not or need to change diet or not. But I don't think they are being mistreated or mistreating themselves.
@@ameliarose47 Jisoo would never be as 'thin' as they are because Jisoo's torso and waist are naturally wider than the other girls' structure-wise. Idk, Jisoo is VERY skinny, her arms are thin and so are her calves, her torso is also skinny, there is essentially no visible fat around it, but her wider bone structure trick people into thinking she's 'thick' when she's honestly about as skinny and around the same weight as the rest of the girls. I went off-topic. But as someone who was a similar body type as Jisoo but a bit more thicker, this always has kind of bugged me when whenever I see her she's just as skinny as the rest but fans call her 'healthy' and 'thick' just to put the other members down. Makes me scratch my head. Not saying you're doing it! Just a personal input.
oh man.. this one still has me heated to this day smh edit: kyla was so strong for never falling apart in public because lord knows it would've been all over my face. this shit is terrible. im so glad she's living her best life rn and surrounded by so many loved ones
she's so beautiful just the way she is like♡♡♡♡♡ ppl need to realize that being chubby , skinny or any type is beautiful in it's own way and it's nothing bad about it
The fact that she became a trainee only to be treated like trash by the public... She literally dedicated most of her teenage hood/childhood to being an idol, only to get rejected. Insane
i became so happy for her by the end of the video. its really gross that the industry is that much unforgiving and sharp. also massive bully. i hope she stay as a happy person always ♡
_I will _*_never_*_ forgive, and I'll _*_never_*_ forget the people who tried to bring her down, and when the group _*_disbanded_*_ I caught hate-watchers _*_celebrating_*_ the group and Kyla's loss. Some of them are watching this video right now, and if you really are, *shame on all of you*, you are all *pathetic*, you are all wasteful, injudicious, and inconsiderate people, *your families must be ashamed of you*._
As a K-pop fan and korean, I was worried when I first saw Kyla. Of course, Kyla is so cute and that was her attraction. But I knew how cruel the Korean entertainment industry was to "chubby" K-pop idols. The Korean entertainment industry demands extremely thin bodies, especially for female celebrities. If you get any closer to your average weight, you'll get a lot of hate comments about your appearance. When bad words about Kyla started to appear on the Korean Internet, I knew that something I was worried about happened. It's heartbreaking that Kyla was suffering from her appearance. (Even she is so beautiful!) When will Korea's terrible principle of appearance disappear? Sorry for my terrible English🙏
I'm Korean too but grew up in Singapore. Returning to family home in Korea always scares me because they always picked on my weight. Sometimes it's with backhanded compliments "Oh you look healthier now!" or "Food there must be tasty," which means "You're getting fat." Other times they just straight up told me I gained weight, or if I got a lil bit tanned, or if I have ONE damn pimple, it's annoying. I refuse to see them if my weight is above 3 digits. 99lbs is my limit. I'm 93-95 lbs now and still think I'm fat thanks to Korean ridiculous beauty standard I can't seem to escape even though I live overseas. I hope this lookism mindset will change soon... (By the way your English is very good!)
@@hannie.haneul that is very thinD:! I’m so sorry that they treat that way and I hope that over time you can be comfortable with your weight and just focus on being healthy, not a number!
@@hannie.haneul bestie how tall are you? Because even at 5'2 you shouldn't be any less than 100lbs THAT'S UNDER WEIGHT. I'm 5'7 and even at 130lbs I was told I would be admitted to the ED recovery ward at a psychiatric facility if I lost any more weight. And it wasn't like random people telling me. It was a whole team of medical professionals that almost denied me birth control because of how under weight I was.
I remember that I've already been a K-Pop stan when Pristin debuted, moreover I'm the same age as Kyla. So this whole issue made me very insecure about my body, which is upsetting, because I've never actually been on the bigger side. I think in general K-Pop can influence your self-esteem and your standards a lot, because you keep looking at pretty girls and handsome boys. But in reality they often starve themselves and get plastic surgery + they get their hair and make-up done by professionals.
My heart breaks for Kyla. We’re the same age and I just know it must of been absolutely heartbreaking for her to debut at only 15 and get so much backlash for her weight. I don’t doubt she’s gonna have so many body image issues in the future thanks to all the awful comments she received during her time as such a young idol. I can only hope that she finds happiness and is working on healing herself
This makes me so mad... I've always had issues with my body image and I can't imagine if I worked hard in the entertainment industry to receive treatment like this. Can't people learn to be decent?
This is so sad, a lot of people forget that weight gain isn't always linked to an accessive unhealthy lifestyle. She's obviously worked hard. There is a number of reasons why someone could gain weight. I have worked out every day and changed up my lifestyle to the point of unhappiness all in the name of "losing weight" dispite having healthy habits. Recently, I was diagnosed with a hormonal disorder and it really helped me understand that sometimes these things aren't entirely about dieting or overeating. The most important thing is how good you treat your body, not how skinny you are. Bodies are made different. To have to go through so much body shaming as a teen when your body is still developing and changing is extremely traumatic.
I’m still angry that her brother let attention from his sisters fan get to his head and make him think he was the star of the family. I hate that guy so much I hope she disowned him after horribly turning on his sister like that when she was already getting shat on by the world.
I just can't imagine how it felt to be an overweight fan watching the treatment of someone that looks like them, that they can relate to. It's horrific.
I can’t imagine attacking a sweet teenage girl and telling her that she’s “bad at managing herself”… everyone goes through puberty differently, and it’s normal to gain during adolescence. What is not okay is shaming a minor for their body. It’s legit absurd how people chose to focus on her appearance as a child, instead of her talent & abilities as an idol- but it’s Korea so it is what it is. Still, it’s such a shame for poor Kyla 😔💗
This is so heartbreaking and it shows how nasty people can be.. 💔 having to go through all these at such a tender age?? Like I just hope she's doing well for herself and happy and loved. She doesn't deserve any of this 💗 wishing her all the good things in life 💗
The fact she was still young and growing at that time like she could hit harder if they just let her be until she became adult. And with her family situation not helping after she left the company. I'm so happy to see her living her life and boyfriend. Shindong can dance too while breaking people's standard, so why can't she? Too harsh for her young age. She deserves the happiness she gets now.
8:02 THIS!!! Don't get me wrong I wholeheartedly adore Hwasa and obviously it's nothing to do with her but the fact she's considered "chubby" is absolutely ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with being chubby but labeling people like Hwasa who are quite small (she literally just has thighs that aren't even big they just don't gap) as chubby creates such a disgustingly toxic mindset especially among younger girls and fans. It makes me so mad.
They did the same with Umji when GFRIEND debuted like she's having a normal body type of a minor girl same with Kyla who is a minor that time. Glad, she left the industry she's happy and do the things she wants.
I cheered for Kyla from beggining to end...and I was happy to know she is in a better place rn far away from criticism and hate. Strong, always beautiful and talented. All the best to Kyla for being strong and brave.
Man that poor girl really went through a lot. Any of the things that happened to her would have broken me completely. The way people were so obsessed with a 15 yo's body is truly disgusting. I'm so happy to see that she's doing okay now. She deserves all the love and happiness!
I hate this. I have a similar body type to Kyla's and for my entire life I've been treated differently for it. It took me a long, long, LONG time to get myself to a place where I like my skin and my body, and I still struggle with it daily. I'm so sad we're treated this way... why does it matter so much... Kyla is gorgeous and she has my heart.
That's crazy to me bc she's actually slim. She has the standard body type that has been seen in female bodies back from 3000 BC and up until this day. It's not your body that's the problem, it's the crazy Asian standard that forces many females to be a body weight that even makes them infertile, bc their bodies' organs can usually not work accordingly when having such low body fat.
@@ava5375 (Sorry this is long) First let me say I’m not trying to attack anyone. I have a similar body to Kyla and I have some thoughts. I just wanna point out that her weight was not stable and it changed a lot over time. Going off my own experience, I’m Chinese and I looked like her at her heaviest. My BMI then was normal, bordering on overweight (and if you use an Asian BMI it was actually overweight. Asian BMI isn’t just BS btw, Asians tend to get health complications due to excess weight at lower weight points than Caucasian people for eg. Doesn’t excuse how horribly toxic Asian beauty standard are, but rn I’m just talking about health). I know BMI isn’t the best tool but still, if you don’t look built and muscular then it’s probably not too far off. She started off slim, but isn’t slim anymore by the end of her idol days. BUT my point is that there’s nothing wrong with admitting someone is a normal weight or chubby (aka. higher body fat %) even. They can still rock on and you don’t have to validate them by calling them slim! That’s my perspective
I can't help but feel happy that the group failed after everything that happened to this woman. From the looks of it, the other members never did anything about her getting hate or being ignored by the media. They didn't defend her in any way whatsoever. They got what they deserve and I hope this woman has found happiness.
