Prius stealth camping nightly set up with WeatherTech shades/covers review

This video shows my nightly set up for car camping with some more information about the Weather Tech Sun Shades that I use. Without all the talking and explaining, it takes me less than 5 minutes to set up the car for the night. I initially did this video at night to try to be authentic but realized it was too dark to see what I was doing.
Here's the link to the "full vehicle kit" which includes shades for all 11 windows of the 3rd gen prius:
amzn.to/3UT2Vva
www.weathertec...
Bottom line regarding the shades: I don't regret this purchase at all and they have served me well for my needs.
Positives:
1. definitely does a good job keeping light inside the car from showing outside the car minus the front windshield shade
2. do a good job helping with temperature control
3. are reversible so you can use the silver side out to help keep the car cool
4. (forgot to show this in the video) there are small tabs on each one that make it easy to remove them
The main negatives:
1. the large rear cover is not reversible as advertised
2. the front one never really fit tight
Please leave a comment if you have any suggestions for replacement for the front windshield shade or if you want to see anything else related to car camping/living.

I got WeatherTech window shades for my Prius V for stealth camping. They fit the windows well. I added black felt to the black side because once when I was stealth camping in a hotel parking lot, I heard voices talking outside about whether my front window was busted. The black shiny side of the WeatherTech shades has a lot of creases in the plastic and so apparently it made the window looked cracked from a distance. I added the black felt using adhesive spray to the shades so it would be flat black. The black felt helped fill in that gap by the mirror also.

Oh I like that. I’ve done a double take more than once (thinking I had a crack in the windshield) when approaching my car with the shades in place. Did you use spray glue to get it to adhere? Also, I’m pretty sure I’m going to switch to a Prius v at some point.
@dougt8215
@dougt8215 2 года назад
@@sweetoldbertha It was the Tacky adhesive spray, but I would think any adhesive spray would work. Actually the Tacky brand spray seems kind of more like temporary glue, so maybe another brand would work better. Also, put electrical tape around the edges of some windows and double-sided tape on that to help hold the shades I don't take off. Also, added a digital rear view mirror that has a rear camera always on, so I was able to permanently cover the rear window.

Comparing the internal dimension specs of my Prius V to a regular Prius, I'm not sure it has all that much more usable room. Especially for losing 10MPG and the higher prices. The length for a bed seems basically the same. I have a 12-inch tall portable flush camping toilet on the floor where your bag toilet is and the top of that comes up to the level of the back cargo area. The often touted additional cargo area seems to be the extra cargo headroom, and stacking storage can make it hard to get to stuff.
@sweetoldbertha
@sweetoldbertha 2 года назад
@@dougt8215 oh very good points! I don’t like to have my rear view blocked at all, so extra headspace may not serve much purpose for me. Other than maybe making it FEEL less cramped. It’s mainly the loss in MPGs that’s holding me back from making the change.
@sweetoldbertha

I thought about getting the Weather Tech shades, but decided to get some from NigelMarston out of England. They act as a two-way where you can see out, but people can't see in. I like to be able to see who is around my Prius at night. 👍

The trick is to get the tints at a place that also does inspections. That’s what I did. Plus back windows can be any tint % in every state.
@sweetoldbertha
@sweetoldbertha 3 месяца назад
Oh that’s good to know! The state where the car is registered allows for an inspection exemption if I can prove I’m out of state. So I haven’t actually had to get an inspection yet on this car.

I made my own coverings with reflectix. Since trying to find just the right blackout fabric is challenging and also expensive, I purchased a couple blackout curtains from Walmart. (I used the Eclipse brand without the grommets.) I cut them about 1-1 1/2” bigger all around my reflectix and cut slits to help them fit the windows better. The slits and notches (where needed) prevent the fabric from bunching up too much, gives a little bit of overlap and provides something to pull on to take them out of the window.
@sweetoldbertha
@sweetoldbertha 5 месяцев назад
That sounds great! I think one of the main benefits over the weathertech would be that it would be matte instead of shiny. So would look more like just darkly tinted windows
@kayanncee8291
@kayanncee8291 5 месяцев назад
@@sweetoldbertha you have to use the curtains that look almost like a linen fabric instead of the satin. I have a light tint on my windows already, so it still looks like a super dark tint.

Thanks for sharing the set up! I haven't camped in my prius yet, but did try out laying down in it the other night. I tried both ways, feet towards the back and front. One thing I will say that is cool about the 3rd gen Prius, is you can lay with your feet towards the front and look at the sky clearly through the glass ceiling or flat area in the hatch area. Almost like a moonroof. Not sure if anyone actually camps that way, but thought it was a pretty neat way to experience it.

Great video, very detailed. Covering up the dash lights and screen is really helpful. I really have a hard time sleeping with lights on, even low lights. If you're using the AC and the car is in the ready mode those dash lights are crazy. Also, your black electrical tape is a great idea for blocking those little led lights. The heating pad is also a huge item which avoids constantly running the engine all night heating radiator water. I would use every electrical item you can in this car. E-brake is also very important, lowers the Richter scale quite a bit. 😂 The front and rear windows are so large on the Prius that finding an efficient way of holding up an almost completely flat shade will be very difficult. I'm not sure how to get that one solved. Tape works great but is a pain, and messy. Figure it out girl and you can make a million LOL. Again, thanks for a clearly explained informative video.

I used that white corrugated post board that you can get at Home Depot for the back window. I used spray on glue and lined it with black fabric on both sides ....I kept the fabric a little longer on the side to help blackout cracks that light can seep through. I use 2 small wood slats that I covered with black electrical tape and wedge them so to hold the cover in place. Nice fabric gives the inside of the car a softer feel as well. I did t like the reflection from the Refectiks

Was thinking about doing something similar to replace the front one. I do like the reflextix for the front one especially for keeping the car cool when I can’t find a shaded parking space. Was actually thinking of liking the others with wallpaper on the inside to give it a nicer feel.

Great video, I love your set up. I would probably ditch the front and make a new one out of reflectix and use the weather tech as a template. Cut it bigger so that you can wedge it in and then cover one side with black fabric. If you come by central Ohio I have extra reflectix and fabric from my van build. 😉 lol As far as video ideas. I would still love to see more of YOU. Meaning your hikes, adventures and daily stuff. Also what you usually like to eat, tips that you find useful etc. I traveled a lot with the US Army but living full time in a van is going to be super new so ANY tips is always appreciated. Thanks for the information on the window covers. I made my own for my 2021 Prius Prime Limited using Reflectix on one side and black vinyl on the window side. I’m curious how long you’ve had yours. I got them too for my 2021 and the front doesn’t fit that well and the back has a gap because my model doesn’t have a rear wiper. But they did send me another set although that is for the Prime lol. But I did cut the back one and now use 2 in the back and the others aside form the small strip in the back are the same so now I have a backup for the rest. But they do seem kind of flimsy. I’ve only had mine for a couple months. Yeah customer care is not helpful. Like I said I told them that the main ones didn’t fit and they sent me another set for a totally different model. but they did let me keep both and also did offer to refund if I sent them back. Also, I don’t know if you mentioned your tint grade but mine is 20. I put the silver side out at night so the dark is inside. With my tint you can’t really tell they are in there u less you get right up on it. I figure if a set lasts a year that’s not bad to pay once a year and I do feel they def help keeping the car cooler
