Pre solo private pilot student working on how to land in the Cessna 172 . Was a solid day and the student is getting really close to figuring it out .
As the instructor I’m still leading him through the pattern and in the next three or so flights I will talk less and less. I’m looking for him to put in both aileron , pitch inputs ,and rudder (as needed ) all the way to the landing.
Before signing a student off for solo I’m looking for consistency , micro adjustments and the ability to handle an emergency engine out in the pattern.
Music is by the Ray Charles Manson Family Fude ( my brothers band ! )

Great video! I learned a lot about site picture even though I have been practicing only takeoffs. Just haven't tried landings yet but with this instruction it will definitely help!

Landings should look almost the same as takeoffs so your half way there. Or I guess your more than half way ! Have fun landing!

just went for my first flight lesson in a powered airplane today! It was amazing, and even though I haven't flown since flying gliders a year and a half ago, it was still very intuitive. I can't wait to learn takeoff and landing either tomorrow or the day after. Keep it up, and clear skies!

We can exceed the flap range even with 40 degrees of flaps but it takes a fair amount of effort ( or no effort and a student pilot ).

Nice video. I’m not sure how the horizon reference on the dash works on takeoff with different (mountainous, elevated) terrain. It’s a start, but keep that in mind. I enjoy your videos. Lots of traffic that day! Good student!
@NEROAviation
@NEROAviation 4 года назад
Each person will have a slightly different sight picture but overall it’s just telling the student to look outside to fly and giving them an idea of what to use. Using the horizon makes for a pitch attitude that shouldn’t get you into trouble during take off, and will give a pitch attitude of 6-8 degrees. Also don’t use the top of mountains and such use where the horizon would be ... so bottom of mountains/ hills.

Hey thanks !!! Sorry for the slow reply ! Yeah I actually have only been to Shelton twice which is crazy since I fly over it all time going to HQM or down the coast.

That’s the amazing thing with a 172. If your too high, just back off the power and add some flaps and you just siinnnkk!!! I flight a piper Cherokee which is also amazing because you can fly as slow as 30 knots in the air in that thing without losing control. (In a stall)
@NEROAviation
@NEROAviation 4 года назад
Yeah I just flew with a CFI student and he was hesitant to push the nose over with full flaps and power out ... he had never tried it. With 40 degrees of flaps and an airspeed of 65 you have to get pretty crazy with the pitch down to gain even 10 knots. I like the Cherokee a lot ... I started in Warriors and had partial ownership of a Cherokee for a while.

Have being struggling with my landing. Really the part about referencing the run-way and holding off. I'll try your trick and see if it helps
@NEROAviation

Let us know how it works! Try not to land and keep a little power in. Landing pitch looks the same as takeoff pitch. Once you get your landings you’ll wonder what was so hard... “landing is easy”

Vela van Iaack, Shop around your local flight schools and don’t just accept the first instructor your handed. Your going to spend 60hrs flying together it helps if your instructor likes flying and teaching and isn’t just building time to move on to the airlines. Fly more and have fun ! Thanks for watching!

I still suck with the round-out and flare. I tend to flare to high because I always get the feeling like I'm plunging too close into the runway.
@NEROAviation
@NEROAviation 5 лет назад
The idea is to have your nose up but still let the plane sink towards the ground. You might be looking to close also try looking at the other end of the runway it might help. Try to be light on the controls if your squeezing the yoke your not feeling anything. If your around 15 hours or less don’t worry too much .... if your getting near 30 hours then you might try landing flat a bit and then work up to adding flare back in. Try to feel the airspeed /energy dissipating and slowly build the flare. Landing is as easy or as hard as you make it ! The plane wants to land just let it and help a little when needed. Good luck! You’ll get it !

You also might see about finding a spot on your local airport to watch other people land it can be illuminating. If it’s and option fly back seat with other student pilots at your school (it’s free experience ).

student + instructor both needs use the landing checklist...student all over the place with carb heat, rpm/ air speed, flaps, not using trim makes student work extra...ever lap around the pattern...instructor giving different instructions...need to use a landing check list

Why is there so much emphasis on staying close enough to the runway so that you can make it if the engine quits? If the engines are so unreliable why would any one want to fly? I'm not say big patterns are OK, but I think smaller/tighter patterns force your hand for tight base/final turns.
@NEROAviation
@NEROAviation 3 года назад
All about minimizing your risk ... “Takeoffs are optional , landings are mandatory” usually if a student wants to fly wide patterns I kill the engine on the base turn and they see the logic as the realize we are going to crash land vs using the perfectly good runway we are too far away to use.

Student driving course, on steroids.
@NEROAviation
@NEROAviation 3 года назад
Actually I have loads of respect for driving instructors especially the ones that don’t have any controls on their side of the car! Pretty much the only time a student can ruin my day is near the ground the rest of the time the risk is minimal when flying(never underestimate a student potential for crazy 😜 though ).
