One of 26 Private SNAFU (Situation Normal, All F*cked Up) cartoons made by the U.S. Army Signal Corps to educate and boost the morale of the troops. The SNAFU character was created by Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and Phil Eastman, and most were animated by Warner Brothers Animation Studios. They were voiced by actors including Mel Blanc and scored by Carl Stalling.

Some of the "souviniers" brought home during World War II are worth more than a Fifties bungalo, car, etc...in the National Art Gallery there hangs a painting of Venus by Cranach that was evidently brought home by a French Canadian farmer and hung in his barn for 20 years (presumably because his wife didn't want a picture of a naked woman hanging in her house).

To be blunt, if I were a young WW 2 soldier who was in combat most of the time and facing death, I'd likely have spent all of my leave money on gambling, booze and cute international hookers also. Who even knew if you'd be alive whenever the war actually ended? Might as well enjoy that cash while you could because you might not even be needing that house back in Idaho in 1946.

@@frydemwingz Who is more likely in Hell? The Allied soldiers on the ground who were most likely drafted and sent out to fight a hard, bloody war, or the fascists who started the entire thing? If a 20-year-old kid who went from the farm to seeing countless horrors but just wanted to unwind with a prostitute on leave winds up in the very same place as Adolph Hitler and Hideki Tojo, who killed millions of innocent people, then the Christian religion is a complete joke and God is utterly arbitrary. I don't believe that for a moment.

This was especially true for Japan, which already had grabbed large chunks of territory in China and had instigated hostilities in a large part of neighboring Asia long before the attacks on Pearl Harbor and the Philippines that brought the U.S. into the war. This is such a great series featuring private Snafu, the everyman at his worst or weakest moment. They are not only funny, they reflect a mirror up to the servicemen to self monitor and police their more base inclinations and how edified they would be to resist those baser inclinations. Snafu is tempted by the usual sins of wine, women, song, and gambling.

@Slipknot Ghidorah well he wasn't in any war and still serves in the air force for another 2 years. He mentioned that he saw many air men return home nearly broke as they spend more than they should on souvenirs and recreational stuff. My dad does sometimes returns home with some souvenirs but he also makes sure to invest his earnings on what actually counts back home

There was actually a poster of a naked girl in the Caribbean scene. Now THAT is one foxy lady. Also it's a sign that this was geared 100% towards military age males since there was no way in hell a mainstream cartoon could have shown that at the time.

In WWI, the Australian troops played a game called two-up, where you flip two coins and bet whether it will come up two heads, two tails or one of each. Because it's so easy to play, a lot of soldiers brought it different places and made big bets, and a lot of soldiers lost a lot of money. These days, two-up is considered an unregistered form of gambling, and you're only allowed to play it on Anzac Day.

@@reFocusZone The wife was a "post-war" wife, a hypothetical future woman he'd meet and marry when he returned home. So, he didn't cheat on her in the army, since they weren't even dating (or likely had even met) in the present. EDIT: Also this is in the 1940's, she she'd have had a REALLY hard time divorcing him even if she did exist.

If you came home with a year or two worth of cash, even their small income added up. Plus there were GI loans and such to help them get a home and car. My father bought a decent house in 1960 for $8 grand, with a garage and fence! It was half that in 1950.

At the low rates they were being paid, you wouldn't have much to show for it after a few years anyways... if you served and unless you were in the rear with the gear there was a good chance you wouldn't. I am a huge fan of saving, but if people are shooting at you, the long term might not be. I am sure the people making this film didn't care, they just wanted the suckers to buy more war bonds.

American soldiers in WW2 were actually extremely overpaid relative to their international counterparts. IIRC a WW2 US soldiers made 5x more than WW2 British soldier, and he made more than most skilled workers in European countries especially by 44-45 when European economies were collapsing. US soldiers were also the best fed soldiers and had the largest rations in the war which became important when food became scarce in Europe in 43-45. Germans got by up to 45 by stealing food from everyone else and denying food to Slavs and Jews but even they eventually starved.

In 1944, privates serving in World War II made $50 a month, or $725.99 in 2019 dollars. The average house in 1946 was $5,150, or $67,490.88, in 2019 50*12*4 (12 months 4 years 1942-45)=$2400 (At $5150, almost half paid for) Plus, serious GI benefits for re-up. In the 1940's, one of the military benefits was that the assets of dead soldiers got transferred to their next-of-kin tax free. Snafu is evidentially unmarried since he's being promised a "postwar wife", but he still might have a living mother or sister; someone to whom his savings could make the difference between starving and having enough time to find solutions should they lose a male relative.

Yeah unfortunately there is more value in physical assets now. But owning them is the key. Most people nowadays don't even fully own the land they live on.
