Elon Musk has been dragged through the SEC for things he's posted on Twitter/X, some of which is technically borderline illegal. Elon absolutely does not have free speech because if he says the wrong thing and causes the stock of a company of his to tank, he can get fined and/or imprisoned for it. A lot of his money is tied up in the markets as well, and part of the reason he pulled out a loan to buy Twitter is because he knows that if he cashes out that much stock at once (tens of billions worth), he can crash the company he withdraws from, causing investors to lose faith in that company. Billionaires like Musk and Bezos have so much money that they can effectively cause market fluctuations due to their actions, and the SEC knows this and regulates against this. This was done by two men in the early 80's when they cornered the silver market and basically did a pump-and-dump scheme with that market (Silver Thursday by the Hunt brothers, I had to look it up). This is why if you were a billionaire, you couldn't just do whatever you wanted with "my money". A litmus on how you know you made it to the top (you're somebody) is when the government starts regulating your actions. Until that happens, you, I, and everyone else are nobodies. I have to give this woman credit even though she didn't explain it in depth. At least she knows a little bit about it.
I disagree with what she said. The money doesn't belong to society nor government. And they have no money until they sell their equity in the company. The net worth is estimated as the assets minus liabilities and since their equity is valued as the share price * number of shares, this is their net worth. If he was selling consistently for a long time, and the stock was bullish enough, he could get his net worth from before selling. They have limitations but it's not like their money isn't theirs. They could probably invest in thousands of instruments and use all of their money that way. Or invest in land or real estate etc. Getting a loan is just what only makes sense if you're a giant in this economy. You can spend lots of money without your own input and the society will pay in inflation for the de-regulations in economy caused by banks printing.

Also, history tells us that indeed the money belongs to the government; FDR recalled all gold back (executive order 6102), in exchange for just over 20 dollars per ounce. People were charged with a crime for violating this order. The government can confiscate your land and pay a "fair" price for it through eminent domain. As far as public companies go, shareholders can raise a fit about what you do with "your" money in the stock market, and so can the SEC (and they will). This is why you've seen billionaires being grilled by congress. If you read what I wrote, I wasn't speaking about net worth. That metric is not always correct, nor is it relevant to people with that much money. People that are billionaires buy political influence, and also must act a certain way in society. They do not have the freedom to do and act as they please. Look at what's happening to everyone's reputation that was associated with Jeffrey Epstein to see my point.
@@lonewolf333 Actually the biggest reason they get a loan out instead of liquidating their shares is because of taxes. You do not have to pay taxes on debt, but you do have to pay taxes on capital gains. Why pay billions in taxes when you can just use your assets as collateral and get a loan which you can pay off indefenitely until your dead.

Banks even gave Epstein shit when he withdrew large sums, even though he banked with those that specialized in High Net Worth Individuals.
