Priya Krishna Tries Pizza Made to Last For 3 Years | M.R.E. Taste Test | NYT Cooking

Follow along as food reporter Priya Krishna takes us on a journey through the world of M.R.E.s. Short for Meals, Ready to Eat, M.R.E.s are thick pouches of shelf-stable rations created for the United States military. They're not particularly fancy or appetizing, and they're technically not allowed to be sold commercially if made under a government contract (most are). But when pandemic-induced panic buying kicked into high gear in early 2020, interest in M.R.E.s boomed. Scientists and engineers spend years perfecting them for service members on operations away from dining halls or field kitchens. Is the beef ravioli as nutritious as possible, and shelf stable for up to three years? Can it survive a drop from a helicopter, or blistering desert temperatures? And - as Priya wonders and finds out - does it taste good?

The thing I love about Priya’s reporting is that it’s not pretentious. Her commentary is informed but without that superiority that can be easily prevalent in these types of videos.

Very cool to see how MREs have evolved. When I joined the Army (1982) We received C Rations (the canned meals) they weren’t bad, but heavy, and no way to heat. The smoked cheese spread was the best, despite the occasional shard of metal from cranking them open with a P-38 can opener. Then they were testing LRPs (Long Range Patrol) all dehydrated- and frankly, godawful. MREs were great. The square hotdogs were always a favorite. I’m dismayed to see the pork patty is still around. No one ever wanted pork patty. But it was dehydrated back in the day. Hopefully it’s improved. The freeze-dried fruit cocktail was better if you didn’t rehydrate it. Love to see all the new choices, and they’ve improved the packaging. Thanks for a trip down memory lane!

While in S. Korea on a field op. We had locals collecting up the brass and some out there that would trade MRE's for soup and soda. We had a young kid maybe 8 years old hanging around and he was clearly hungry. Someone gave him a pouch of potted pork meat product, he opened it, smelled it and dropped it on the ground and ran away. I think that says it all right there.

My dad was in the army in the 80s and 90s and he used to get us MREs for camping trips and we had tried the new MREs about 5 years ago to see if they were the same and I must say they were definitely better. Although I do miss the chicken ala king entree and the mini Tabasco bottles. I can attest that the freeze dried fruit cocktail was worth it to eat straight out of the package without rehydrating it, like a cracker.

Priya mentions that the ravioli reminds her of Chef Boyardee, which is funny because his canned food was originally made for troops during WW2

And M&Ms were developed to mimic British Smarties that were being eating by soldiers in Europe in the mid-1930s, and were then the perfect candy to include in US soldier rations for WWII. And during the war, they were exclusively sold to the US military, because of rationing, the Army being the first big customer after their debut.

There is a definite ranking among the military, like trading baseball cards.

I went with a volunteer group to do relief after Hurricane Katrina, and we had MREs for lunch while we were out in the field. I’m sure if I had just eaten it for no reason it would have been terrible, but after hours of mucking out houses knee deep in mud and mold... it was amazing to have Chicken Cacciatore! The science that goes into making these things is crazy.

- From bugs, -to genitals, -to food blobs with a bad reputation in TikTok, -to chicken made out of the gluten in flour, -to two ingredient chocolate fudge balls, -to coffee whip made out of ONLY ice water, sugar and instant coffee crystals, -to multiple homemade fake honey types, -to homemade _real_ honey, -to honey still in the honeycomb (the wax is edible), -to a cake that looks like an island diorama, -to a burger in a can (mind you, the burger in a can was the only unpleasant experience out of all of these. that's rare that she would dislike a plate of food but apparently it was just dry and tasteless), -to an entire chicken in a can (actually nice with other ingredients, a bit dry alone though), -to emergency rice and meat in a can from japan (extremely nice, if a bit expensive), -to cheese, bread, and bacon from a can, -to ice cream (31 flavors of either gelatos or sorbets, what a gift, because yes it was a gift sent to her home. highlight was chocolate + kahlua.) she's tried it all. she posts regularly and has done so for many years so archive panic is real.

MREs have come a long way. I remember the first pouch MRes in the 80s which were a significant step up from the old canned foods for soldiers. Some of the 80s MREs were actually not half bad, especially the freeze-dried fruits. I think it's so cool they now have a heater included. If you consider these need to be self-contained for a soldier who is on patrol and nowhere near the base, they're phenominal.

It’s seems really stupid that something like ready to eat meal provisions aren’t available to purchase commercially. This was a fantastic episode though, really appreciated the recognition of what our service men and women do everyday. I’m the child of a vet and I understand this better than most people. The amount of innovation required to make these meals is unfounded and something civilians and non military family member can’t undersynd

For combat operations, what we used to do is what we called "rat fuck" them. Only take the main meal, spoon and the bread. We didn't take anything else as we didn't want to carry it on dismounted patrols. We had a couple of sayings when you live in the light infantry world: travel light, shiver at night; and ounces equal pounds, pounds equal pain. The pork sausage patty is one of my favorites. They discontinued the chicken and dumplings, I only had it a couple of times but that was goooood! I'm glad they discontinued the veggie omelette, there was always a huge stack of those left behind, I went without eating than eat one of those. I don't miss eating those things weeks on end. They get so disgusting that I started smoking cigars for meals instead of eating an MRE.

Soldiers learn to modify the meals by mixing different foods together, crumble the cracker into the cinnamon apples with salt and sugar to make apple pie, chilli mac mixed with the jalapeno cheese with hot sauce to make spicy mac and cheese, cocoa powder mixed with the coffee, creamer and sugar packets to make chocolate pudding. I can't believe they got rid of the mini Tobasco sauce bottle in the accessory packet.
