Today I had done exactly the same process as you .After clearing the error from the tester I was so happy to see that it went back to normal under my own eyes, but after driving it for 3 meters it whent back to error mode. I went and done a few miles and the same problem. What seems to be the problem ? Is it the fact that I used a Corona beer instead? Please help thank you
@fast at fifty, I have a 2006 B7 a4 3.0 tdi Quattro automatic... mines selects PRNDS on the dashboard but won’t move in any gear.. would this be the same part causing the problem.. I thinking it’s not the gear box itself as all gears including reverse would be gone? Any advice appreciated.
I have the same sort of problem. when I start my car it goes into limp mode, the prnd is flashing and if i put it into gear and rev it seems like its misfiring. Diagonised the car and came up with error P1757 (voltage supply - open circuit). what should i be replacing or repairing here.
Have an issue with our 3.0 V6 a4 cab, it will NOT allow me to shift up and down 1,2,3,4,5 however all other functions of the box work apart from the tiptronic - any idea what that fault is? VCDS wouldn’t connect to the transmission
Sounds totally the same as mine. Replace the circuit board under the gear selector housing as per the video and that should sort it. Let me know how you get on
hi, I'm Italian, I have a similar problem with audi a4 quattro b6 as well as reporting the PRNDS in red, only reverse gear enters, do you think it's the usual problem, thanks
Hello!. For the small cost involved it might be worth a try. Is it showing any fault codes? Also worth getting codes read just in case it is something worse
@@aedobrews3887 hi thanks for the reply, no it doesn't give me any errors, the car starts up, walks only in reverse and has the red PRNDS writing, it doesn't go in automatic or manual
I just took my 2007 audi a3 2.0t wagon held it 140 for bout 20 miles now mine is blinking on dash never seen that usually it shows what gear im in scared to turn off gonna try scan b4 I turn off So I turned it off after scanning it. No codes and when i turned it back on it went away. But when I went to adjust the wheel usually it's smooth and glides it was tight as he'll almost couldnt move it. Idk what that would be.
@@aedobrews3887 checked it this am. I think it got so hot it seized up. It's about 100 degree and I was ridding the car pretty hard. It's fixed now just needed to cool. Can be why it was blinking as well
hi just woulder when you selected drive did this show on dash as I am wondering if I have same problem. I can see what gear I'm in with scanner and can see valve values change as well. I've checked oil levels thanks
@ady arnold @adyarnold Hi. Great vid, looks an easy job, thanks. If this same problem was intermittent would you suspect the same issue? Are there any signs on the selector bit that you've replaced that would show it is faulty? Before i start ripping up my carpets and looking for water in places. Thanks in advance
Mine was intermittent too then it just went. Nothing that was noticable so just replace it and that should be it. It's an easy enough fix. Good luck! @karlroberts
Hi, Thanks for the video, seems a simple diy job but not sure if it would work for me. I'm having similar problems with my a4 2.0 tdi (2006 B6, 7 speed auto). None of the prdns lights are showing and the ESP and engine management light are on. I can change gear in tiptronic but have to take my foot off the gas for it to change up in auto. If i do that the car loses power as if its in too high a gear for the speed. Once up to speed though its fine. Had it scanned and code 01315 is showing which relates to CANbus to and from TCM in the gear box. Checked CAN resistance via OBD port and its 60ohms as it should be. Checked connector at gearbox and it seems fine too. Am thinking of checking resistance in wiring and tcm directly but im totally confused as to where the problem is. Do you think it might be the selector?
Thanks for your query. The problem with electronics is they are all linked so isolation of the problem can be difficult. I would always start with the cheapest and easiest options first. Bit of a wild goose chase but stick with it and try easy ones first
@@aedobrews3887 thanks mate. Think im goimg to have to breakndown the wiring at connection points and see if i can trace the fault that way. Knowing my luck its going to either be something expensive needing a specialist or something cheap but a pain in the backside to isolate
Hi man, I know this video is kinda old but I’m still having this sort of problem on my 2008 2.7 audi. When I start my car there is only the current position(D or N or P for example) just flashing. Not all the lights but only the current one. I can drive it like that and the reverse also works. The one issue I am facing is that when this light is flashing, I notice that it takes a littlw longer to start the car! Like the gass goes up to 2 sometimes 3 and then it starts moving! Although this doesnt happens very often but I get very worried when this happens. Sometimes I just turn it off and on again and then it starts working all perfect. Does the replacement of this part would be helpful for my sort of problem?
First thing Leotrim is doesnit show any fault codes or does it do it without errors? If is shows codes then diagnostics always the first call. Sounds like my fix is NOT your problem. Again codes?
I have the same sort of problem when I start my car it's in limp mode the prnds is flashing I can't move if I put it into gear if rev in gear it seems to misfire . I notice before this problem my prnds lights was jus lit up but which signs was saying the gear selector but now when to limp mode Sign then I have had the TCM checked but come up with no fault on it put it back in changed gear oil but no difference have even checked ECU underneath driver seat to see if wet and its dry but notice I'm get alot of components saying low voltage on my ODB reader and no communication to the TCM from gear selector so well it be the same part or a faulty wire causing low voltage to not communicate? Hope u can help with this as they said there a upgrade for the selector it's like a sign of a common problem if that can cause limp mode and disab6 the car from moving forward or reverse ....
It sounds way more sinister than the selector but it's a cheap part to replace if you get one second hand. Would always go with the cheapest possible fix first then work your way through more expensive solutions
@@aedobrews3887 am having the same problem with my 06 Audi a4. It goes in park, reversed, neutral, drive and sport an moves off fine but my PRNDS just light up still
Hi. Thanks for the video. My bro in laws ‘07 A4 TDI is flashing up all the PRNDS lights and it allows the car to turn over but not start. Never had any issues with the gears themselves or going into limp mode etc. It does this intermittently and can go for weeks without it happening sometimes. Does this sound like a similar issue to the one in your video? Thanks.
@@dennisduvelYes, I did exactly as per the video and bought a used one from eBay from a parts place and it worked perfectly. Very easy job and definitely worth doing as a starting point 👍
When I turn on my 04 a6 2.7t and shift it will slam into the gear that it’s shifted into all the prnds is lite up, it will still drive but not like it should be. But if I shut the car off and on a few times it will be just fine. Could this be the same problem?
Hi all my golf V tsi 1.4 7 gears dsg 2008 model. Bought six months ago, recently it has started flashing PRNDS and at times gears slipping gear 2 and 4 only. Diagnosis report: stuck in gear 1, codes P189A and PO72C Please any advise please, thanks in advance
definitely sounds like an actual gearbox issue rather than an easy fix im afraid. May have chewed a couple of gears. Any fault codes? Straight to a gearbox specialist or dealer! Any warranty remaining/Was the DSG oil change done?
Sounds like it is the little computer board under the gear selector as per the video as anything more serious would throw a fault on the ECU. Have you tried relacing the board yet? They are a common weakness
I haven’t had chance to replace it yet no gonna get around to it this weekend I’m just hoping that it is this, would it come up on diagnosis kit if this was my problem? Thank you for help
Rudy Corcoles the transmission will still shift but just in drive and the tiptronic will be deactivated. Search on EBay for an automatic gear selector cover/housing. The usual faulty part is the small circuit board contained in the part
Adrian Arnold thanks for the reply I found one in my local pick a part..my car wasn't shifting right now that I replace the part it runs perfect...good video thanks 👍
@@aedobrews3887 I've bought one second hand scrappers I'm fitting it tomorrow hopefully it should do the trick as my diagnostics computer isn't throwing any codes and all the functions work fine. plus its intermittent. So fingers crossed.
My VAG handheld code reader proved to be a bit useless in scanning the gearbox codes so I tried my £11.99 one and it came up with a code that 17090 ( i think) I have erased this code a few times and the PRNDS stops flashing however I have no reverse. The selector box I got didn't do anything, theres the selector mechanism which you can buy an aftermarket one for £50-70 off Ali express but I fear its the gearbox ECU. I have seen a few websites and videos on dismantling it and repairing it. I'm not going to try and repair it myself I'm going to send it off and have it done so it is tested and has a lifetime warranty for about £150. Just waiting for the weather to change (easter holidays) then I'll have a bash at it.
I have the same problem sometimes, but sometimes it's all gear flahsing and sometimes automatically it's in manual mode , do you think if I change all the circuit board it's gonna work . I need help Please
quick question before doing this when you drove your car did It go past the 2nd gear. cause has got the same issue but it never goes past the 2nd gear when driving. so im not sure if its the transmission range sensor or the gear box that has got an issue
@@aedobrews3887 hi, I am having the same issue it's Got all Of PRNDS all permanently lit up NOT flashing so I have bought the same part with matching part numbers just like you have but unfortunately still stays permanently lit up unless I put in drive then it highlights the D on the dash only. Could it be the gear linkage from the gear selector ? Appreciate the help. Thanks
@@aedobrews3887 you know what, I hadn't because it hadn't thrown codes up previously. Will give it a try tomorrow and keep you updated. Appreciate the response. 👍🏻

hey man. great video very helpful. however I was trying to find a replacement gear box like the one you have there, but I could not find it on eBay. can I get any help with that. I have the same issue right now and I would like to try this and see if it works. thanks
Don't change the gearbox until so many other things happening..many just the 2 circuit boards...one under the shifter and one under the L or R seat..here in USA, trans ECU depending on model year , is either under passenger seat, on the right, as viewed from inside the car or in the same enclosure as the engine ECU,, that large water tight box in the firewall, drivers side. ..and here in USA, door lock ECU under drivers seat,,, Just like good doctors, don't do anything without correct diagnosis, and stay away from dealers until all resources considered..benn working on cars for 60 years,, now semiretired Sr Systems Engineer on the F 35 Joint Strike Fighter..each costs > 100 Million US Dollars, 5 computers on each and over 800,000 lines of software...so 1-2 board swaps from e bay or another "parting out " Audi..so much better than a 4000 Sterling gearbox.. ..and they will probably change the boards too ...
Man that doesn't sound good. That sounds more like a mechanical gearbox failure rather than anything to do with the shifter. Get it lifted to your nearest garage for a proper look
No I'm afraid not. I just bought the whole chromed part second hand off a scrap dealer then just changed the board. As it's relatively simple to remove have a look at the serial number underneath your own first
@@aedobrews3887 OK I'm getting a P0732 which is 2nd gear. I'm going to drop the pan and replace the shift solenoid or all of them on the valve body. Hope that solves the issue. Mines a 06 A4 Cabriolet 3.0 Quattro with the 5 speed.

@@aedobrews3887 Yeah mine seems to select the gears PRNDS properly from the shift lever and at very low rpms it seems to shift normally but at higher rpms it will flare 2nd and go into safe mode then trigger TCM P732 code for 2nd solenoid.

Best to search for 'central gearstick housing' for your model and year on Ebay or a breakers. It is usually just the circuit board inside it but easier to replace the whole surround
