Pro Acting Coach Breaks Down 13 Horror Scream Scenes | Good & Bad Acting

Acting coach Scott Sedita critiques some of Hollywood's most famous - and infamous - screams. He reviewed horror-movie screams ranging from great to mediocre to downright terrible, breaking down what went right and wrong in the actors' performances.
There's a lot to pick apart in the screaming performances of Hollywood actors, whether it's an Oscar winner like Nicolas Cage delivering his now-infamous scream in "The Wicker Man" or Paris Hilton making her horror debut in "House of Wax." So, what separates the highs from the lows? With examples from "Psycho," "Scream," "Halloween," "The Shining," "Jaws," and "Frankenstein," Sedita analyzed why certain screams resonate with audiences while others fall flat. He pointed out techniques that great actors use to make their screams look and sound terrifying, as well as the common mistakes that can make an on-camera scream feel forced or unnatural.
According to Sedita, the effectiveness of a cinematic scream has everything to do with where the scream is coming from in the body - namely whether the actor is screaming from their chest or their throat. Rhythm and timing are also key, especially for horror-movie scenes that require a lot of screaming. Sedita deconstructed the most famous screaming moments of celebrated scream queens in the slasher genre, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Neve Campbell, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Susan Backlinie, and Vera Farmiga; and he compared the hits and misses of horror B-movie screams, from Darren Ewing's viral moment in the comedy-horror "Troll 2" to Candy Clark's campy shrieking in cult favorite "The Blob."

Drew Barrymore's performance in "Scream" was Oscar-worthy in my opinion. The way she transcends from playful to creeped-out to utterly terrified - all in the course of 12 minutes - is remarkable.

That opening scene is one of the most well-acted ever and is why the movie is so great. Wes Craven knew his actors and knew how to direct and scare his actors in an healthy way [not like Stanley fktard Kubrick] to make the scenes work. Damn I miss Wes' works...

Shelley Duvall's performance was so good because it genuinely looked like she was losing her mind with terror. Which is the result of being driven to a nervous breakdown by the director.

@@fruitymonkey8641 She pretty much just dropped out of acting after the movie. She does, many years later, say that the role was amazing and she gave credit to Kubrick; the abuse was terrible but it made the movie feel that much more impactful and real. Which reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock and how he treated Tippi Hedren, the blond bombshell of The Birds. She also dropped out of the movie industry; a mixture of the abuse she suffered on set at the hands of Alfred Hitchcock but also because he blacklisted her so no one would hire her because she rebuked his sexual advances on her. Hitchcock was an amazing director but a piece of shit of a human being.

@Kivota

@@7Mushrooms7 She says that Hitchcock's last words to her were that he'd ruin her career. During one scene on set she wasn't aware there would be actual birds, and he made her do take after take for 5 days. It's a scene where her character is intended to be seriously wounded and can't escape from them. Originally she was told they would be mechanical birds and only found out on the day of filming. Some of them were also tied to her and of course actually attacking her. And I don't mean a couple, there were crates full. Very traumatic. She even called it the worst week of her life. During filming he made multiple sexual advances. She declined. She says he tried to control who she saw, what she ate, and everything else in between, even having people follow her. Other actors around her said it was hard to watch. They did make Marnie together too, where he became even more possessive and controlling. She wanted out of her contract but as she was a new actress she was scared it'd ruin her career. Eventually it was too much, she wanted to cut ties. He continued to keep her in contract for the next couple of years, meaning that she couldn't get any work. I don't know if I've missed anything but it was truly an abusive relationship.

I mean I guess it's just because people react in fear in many different ways besides screaming, and I think that's kinda where the horror trope annoys me, it's always screaming when in reality when a person is under that much pressure, fear and has a will to survive it isn't always just screaming y'know? Some people scream, cry, pass-out, freeze in place, sh*t or p*ss their pants so it's just different, but I agree it is one of the realest screams especially if you didn't know what was gonna go down in that scene.

@@CyberCypress Basically, the story is that the director - Stanley Kubrick - and Jack Nicholson planned to chase her around the set with the axe without her knowledge. They just told her that Jack was going crazy in the scene and he was going to chase after her. She had no idea the axe was coming and so when she saw that blade cut through the door, that was genuine fear. They did a lot of things like that to her while filming The Shining and often made her do multiple takes even when she really needed a break. Jack would also stay in character and terrorize her at the behest of Kubrick just to get "better reactions" out of her while filming. The whole experience messed her up pretty badly. I believe that was her last film role and she suffered a severe mental breakdown because of it.

Troll 2 is one of the best bad horror movies ever. The acting is so stilted that his "oh my gaaaawwwwwd" probably isn't even in the top ten worst line deliveries. Seeing as most women actually ARE killed by their partners or people they know more often than not, her reactions seemed pretty reasonable to me! I also learned after watching another RU-vid video on the behind the scenes of the Shining that Kubrick used an 18mm lens to film the whole thing, including the close-up shots. This distorted the actor's faces in subtle yet unsettling ways. So Duvall actually looks way more 'bug-eyed' in this film than she did in real life.

I loved that scene from The Shining... it was perfect to me. It was like she was terrified, confused, on the edge of insanity becuase her husband was actually trying to kill her and not knowing why, and realizing that she had to kill him, knowing she had to protect her son at all cost... all those emotions wrapped up in that one moment. The shock of falling down the stairs, when she’s running across the lawn to get away. I feel that’s how anyone in the real world would act. Screaming whatever you could to get help, not caring what pitch you were lol and when she’s in the closet, she plays the terror of it all so well. My favorite horror flick. ❤️

Drew Barrymore in Scream was SO good. And I believe a large part of it is how they did things behind the scenes. The actors never met the voice of Ghostface until they were done filming so they could keep the mystery and fear alive. He also kept reminding Barrymore of real life animal cruelty news stories to keep her emotional during the scene. A little mean, but it was totally worth it cause the actors were able to really react to everything going on.
