The footage from my XHA1 is excellent ! You can customize the colour balance in menu, as well as black point, contrast, etc. Skin detail, etc. Something tells me that you had the AWB switch on the side of the camera turned off. In that case, you can just pre balance, or hit the button to flash balance. Also the mic sounded a little muted on the Canon, was the ATT on ? were you in manual audio with gain down ? although I dont use the stock mic on that camera much, I think the mic on that camera is either damaged or not set up properly. the one on my camera sounds much crisper. I am wondering if there is a way to capture video on an external recorder through the SDI out, thanks !

Nice idea to compare these two legendary cameras, but it gets quite useless because you didnt transfer it via firewire and instead used some analog way to capture this onto your PC. These are HD Cams, the FX 7 even has an HDMI output, that theoretically could give you 1080 x 1920 25p and the sensor really gives you progressive read out over that port as far as I see in the datasheet - instead of the 1080 × 1440i it can record internally over the internal Mini HDV recorder. So the point of these cameras was the fact that they were two of the quite early digital prosumer camcorders, that were able to record in HD at the time - and this video may show some interesting aspects, but in this comparison video it's a major mistake to capture it in Standard definition, as we are not able to see the footage that the cameras are able to produce straight out.

Good tutorial video. I own a used Canon XH-A1 which I would like to mount a field monitor to. However, I'm not getting a signal out of the mini AV video port on the back of the camera. I wish the XH-A1 had an HDMI port! I don't own a HD composite interface cable for the XH-A1. And what I'm finding on Ebay seems to be over-kill.

how do you format an sd card for the xh-a1? i go into the menu but the option for “card operations” doesn’t appear. am i missing something?
