I have been subbed to Sorted since pretty early during the pandemic and it's really interesting how the group has evolved over the years. This video was still well within their "comedian" era as I call it when the humor was the bulk of the video. Later on they toned down the humor some and focused more on cooking skills and some myth busting. I will say that their "Pass it on" series is absolute reaction fodder for channels like yours. Currently they are bringing up one of their background Chefs, Kush to fill in the gap in the team that James Currie (The tall redhead) made when he left to return to restaurant cooking. Overall they are good channel to react to as they have a vast backlog that can cover just about anything you could think of.

"Fusion" between almost any dishes is possible if done properly. Usually not something you would want to find in a restaurant, but for home cooking you should always be open to experimentation! BTW they do do many collab videos, so if your able to visit over there you could probably arrange a video to cook with them or three.
@icedcat4021
@icedcat4021 5 месяцев назад
Fusion restaurants are super common. Why wouldn't I want to see fusion in a restaurant? Traditional recipes are made for home cooking, you can be more creative if you go outside of them. "All restaurants need to do the same few recipes" is a hell of a take.
@Skenjin
@Skenjin 5 месяцев назад
@@icedcat4021 That isn't what I said. I said fusion between "anything" is great for home cooking. But that "anything" could be a disaster if tried in restaurants. Those recipes need time to be honed in, or at least they should get that time.

These guys grew up as friends, in school and university. Their love of and curiosity toward food is fabulous. As someone mentioned, 3 are 'normals', which means home cooks with limited skills, 2 are professional chefs who have worked under some pretty famous chefs. Their concept is to encourage us 'normals' to try new things and learn from their mistakes. It's a brilliant show, over 8 years online - and worth subscribing to. The episode they released today was very informative and inspirational.

One thing you should watch as sort of a sequel is 1st: Sorted Food - Pass It On - Paella (Pass It On is a series where each cook/chef gets 10 minutes or so to add to a dish. One cook/chef at time, they go in an order, and each person coming into the kitchen has no idea what has happened as they were in another room or had something blocking their ears). The next thing would be Burrito Battle - Take 2.

They did a paella video quite recently. Would love to see you react to that, too. Its "PAELLA: Chef vs Normal Blind Cook-Off". In that format basically a trained chef and a "normal" both do the same surprise dish. While the chef just gets the name, the normal gets some cards with steps of the recipe. (But they are out of order) I guess Jamie did quite a bit better this time. (Including disclaimers concerning authenticity of what they are doing :D )
@ZephyCluster

This is an infamous old episode of Sorted Food that is referenced quite a lot by them even to this day. If you'd like a "Where are they now" Follow up, they have another video where Jamie and another trained chef Kush are given the exact same ingredients to make a paella, but Jamie is given the the recipe steps out of order and Kush has to do so from (very hazy) memory. It's meant to showcase some cooking hacks that professional chefs have to make cooking easier and more fun, but it ended up showing how much the backlash and learning from the Burrito episode got drilled into Jamie's brain. 😂😂
@morganalori
@morganalori 5 месяцев назад
That and Jamie loves paella. That ep was so fun. Kush listening in on Jamie, because Kush hadn't made one and Jamie was making a traditional one. It's a great video for both dishes. It would make a great follow on video so people can see Jamie cooking traditional paella correctly

In case you ever watch SortedFood again, here's a short description of who is who: Jamie - The paella burrito guy. He's pretty much their resident BBQ guy, really loves bold flavors usually. IMO, he's improved immensely over time as he matured, he's really quite a good cook now. Mike - He's the pun guy. Mostly known for panicking a lot and making a mess. As far as I remember, he's mostly known for shoehorning in south-east Asian flavors into stuff. He often decides to do way too much during challenges, often resulting in him losing his mind. Barry - He's the donkey guy. Mostly known for being the pretentious one (and for his attempt at a cloud egg), and for making stuff up for battles. He was recently named the SortedFood sous chef after winning a challenge that lasted more than a year. Those were the normals, now for the chefs: Ben - The guy with the glasses. He's the OG Sorted chef, one of the original 4 members (alongside the 3 normals). He's known for innuendos, obsession with explaining everything, and for growing stuff in his allotment and bringing in jams and pickles he made from the plants he grew. James - The ginger chef. He joined in later as their development chef (the one that develops the recepies they publish), and after some time started showing up on screen as a regular. He's known for being sassy and also an excellent chef, a lot of the stuff he made over the years was incredible. A year or two ago he left Sorted and has been working in the restaurant industry again. Kush - he isn't present in this vid, but he's in the new ones. He's kinda jumped in as a replacement for James after a while. Just like James, he's excellent at what he does, and I'm pretty sure he's the main guy in their food team now. If you watch their recent Pass It On challenge (basically a game of telephone, but with cooking), you will what a machine this guy is.

Over the past few years, Sorted has become one of my favorite food channels. Between the entertaining bits, there's a lot of food exploration and education. While it's geared toward helping home cooks get better in the kitchen, there's a lot for those of us with a more formal education to appreciate. While you have the three "normals" competing, you have two of the chefs who worked and trianed in restaurants. You have Ben "Ebbers" and James Currie (who left to work on his culinary career) in this video discussing the process. James shows up a couple of times a year though, and he always brings that something extra.

James... I'm in the US and we put all kinds of crazy crap in a burrito. There's a restaurant in the nearest town to me that serves a BBQ burrito, which is a 14" flour tortilla filled with steamed rice, black beans, pulled pork, cheese, sour cream, jalapeños, dill pickles, fresh pico and BBQ sauce. It's awesome. There are also Sushi and Poke burritos, Korean BBQ burritos, Chicken & chorizo jambalaya (Jamburrito) burritos, and all kinds of other creations. A tortilla is just a flat bread that's rolled with stuff in it. What stuff you put in it is only limited by your imagination.

To answer your question why you would want a Teflon pot: if you often find yourself making anything that involves gently heating eggs... Such as certain sauces and cremes it's a godsend. For instance, it's much easier to not curdle a creme pat if you use a Teflon pot, as small pieces won't stick and curdle to the bottom. I have a Teflon pot for that specific purpose alone.

Jamie, Barry, and Mike have all gotten very good at cooking nowadays. They're not michelin star level or anything, but they are definitely good chefs in their own right. I mean I'd eat the "Paella" Burrito, it'd probably be tasty. From my understanding Paella is/was traditionally a rice based peasant food made with whatever protein sources were available. Same with the Burrito. I understand the idea behind it. But I do understand why people got upset. People want to protect and pass on their traditions and that's important - you can't make a Vietnamese rice paper roll or a dolmade and pass it off as Sushi.

Right, anyone who says they wouldn't eat it simply because it's a "Paella" Burrito needs to grow up. There's a huge difference between being proud of your traditions and being obnoxiously immature. This definitely falls under the latter.

I think the hate was coming mainly from people who hadn't seen the video. at 5:22, I don't know why teflon is still a thing. For years I've been buying granite stone coated pans. They are non-stick and non-toxic. You can also use metal in granite pans. Also, granite coated pans are very affordable today.

"The bloody beans!" 😂😂😂 This was kind of sacriligeous, but one thing is certain - these guys 100% don't lack imagination! Always fun to see how people can experiment with different dishes.

I sometimes saute and sometimes caramelize my soup vegetables in a stock pot, sometimes brown meat in the same pot, so I like non-stick stock pots. Makes for using fewer pots and pans, too.

Cheap metal alloys and reactive metals (aluminum) need coating with something. So we get 3 options: Polymer non-stick, mineral non-stick, Cobalt glass that sticks like hell, but it is pretty indestructible. There is currently a cultural problem where we associate coating with only non-stick. It is cheaper to make a sauce pan non-stick, people buy based on price.

To remedy this, individuals can buy stainless steel pots second hand. Personally i love how cheap gastro containers can be and often use those.

At least he didn't commit the ultimate sin and call it a pa-YAY-YA! burrito!! The cool thing about it though is that you can have paella in your pocket and eat it on the go!! I will have to try this, it must be amazing for lunchtime at the office!!!

The paella burrito is kind of a left over burrito showcase, because you can have those ingredients left over from last night dinner, make a burrito out of it for lunch, and its a convenient no untensil way to eat it.

It says a bit about our lack of marketing, that when people think of rice dishes in europe they always go to risoto or paella, even though Portugal is the contry that eats more rice per capita in europe and it's full of rice dishes...

I've been cooking professionally for over 28 years now. I was Vader to a Master Chef for a little over 14 of that. My style has become very fun. Twists and turns, to turn ordinary into extraordinary. For the people I encounter that don't really know how to cook, I basically explain it like this: If you know how to make a shed, you can paint it any color you want. Within reason of course. So far beyond grateful that it's something I can do on a whim.

Love Sorted food, also Uncle Rodger has done a video with them. If you want a good video of theirs to react to I would recommend the poker face challenge vid they did with Callux, basically they created food with the worst texture imaginable that they have to eat while maintaining a straight face . It's a really funny video to watch.

My thought, since I always try to think ahead, is leftovers. A paella burrito would be a great way to use leftover paella! I don't think there would have been the hate or the death threats if this had used leftovers, except that wasn't part of the challenge. You should check out some of the leftover challenges though where the Chef (Ben, Blue Jacket) takes scraps from the 'normals' cooking and creates dishes out of those (with added pantry items).

Back in the 2010's, there were gourmet food trucks in the San Francisco bay area making Korean barbecue burritos, tikka masala burritos, and even sushi burritos. Had the paella been made more traditionally and then wrapped in a tortilla, I think it could have been popular here.

But these guys are funny and have watched them from time to time, enjoyed it 😂 Another great video, James! Have a wonderful rest of your day and speak to you soon. 😊

Hello chef and happy new year! You mentioned us italians being really strict regarding people doing our food wrong, i'll give you a fact that could help comprehend better this thing about us: we don't have a national dish, and that is because we have regional local dishes. And every little part of italy has it's dish that perfected in the centuries. There are many dishes in my country that i don't know of! But there are some regional dishes like carbonara (from Lazio region) that we eat so so much through all italy, or pizza too, that symbolise what we are and what our quotidianity is. When someone disgrace one of our regional dishes, you will hear mostly people from that region complain, aside from very popular dishes that every italian that see it disgraced will complain for.

We have a nonstick little saucepan. It's quite silly yes... but it is sooo easy to clean. So I actually use it a lot lmao. I don't really have difficult to clean ones but when I have cooked dried beans in pots I have actually managed to stain them a few times. Just not gonna happen in that one. I don't like it when people get uppity about how a food "should" be. It works or it doesn't, in general. And then, it works for your palate or it doesn't. So so many "traditional" recipes are less than 100yr old and your grandma has a different recipe than my grandma. I do things like put black beans in my fried rice. Olives and mushrooms in my enchiladas. You gotta experiment to arrive at things like this lol. The more you do it, the more knowledge you have on how different things can mix. As well as things that definitely do not....
