As a bass player I'm always thrilled at new Stanton videos! I'll loop the different drum patterns and play lines over them, both made up and stolen. Then I boast to my music buddies that I jam with Stanton Moore...and I won't be lying😂
Just saw Galactic at the Belly Up. Mind blown! I loved the tone of those drums and, of course, the funk. What a kind and generous person, too. Thank you for the photo op. Working on LLRL RLRR right now!
This is so funky, man!! Really love using that beat in a 2-bar groove where the first bar is a simpler beat and the second one is something similar to that! Great lesson, malaka! Really digging that "Single Surface" concept!
@@portnickos thanks my man! Funny! I totally started doing that last night in the gig…playing one measure of the original simpler Magnolia Special and then one measure of this variation. Great minds! 🙌🏼😂👊🏼
Same here..72. my day gig was gigging, started in 78 and..lol, still practicing everday. You too?? Stanton is great, love his books too. You work his books? Fun stuff.
When I play I just roll with what I feel it should sound like in my head and my gut. When funkin up that noleans groove I can feather the bass on fours but why. Nope I want to accentuate that drum with what my bones wants to express. I take snare drum books and put one hand on snare the other on the cymbal or the Tom and funk it up with the bass. Take glam accent one blop a blop put left hand on snare right on hh or cymbal and it’s a funky swing either with 4 on bass or one e and like dotted on bass. Take the stick control snare book and put left hand or right hand on cymbal or Tom see what you get then add the bass drum in direction you want it to go. There’s billions of undiscovered rhythms to explore. Stanton has the monopoly on that funky groove but I heard him playing a bonham song and just smiled he gets it! I’m 70 and I learn new stuff everyday
This is awesome, nice work. So...I went looking for something referenced in the video, but didn't see it. I remember it as a playlist of songs to learn the between-the-cracks groove. Did I miss something...? Thanks!
Whenever I try to put a little bit of swing feel on a pattern I’m playing, I may think I’m sounding awesome while playing it, but find myself sounding pretty heavy handed when listening back. I need to remind myself to do it very subtly, and it will be more than enough.
@@llRoBoBinHoll exactly! A little goes a long way. Recording yourself, listening back and comparing it classic groove masters is the the best way to dial it in. 🙌🏼
