A lot of people are defensive about the stretching. He was basically saying the outcome of the hair wouldn't be as good as going in, sectioning the hair and getting the roots. Which is why at the end he took a point of for the roots not being as straight as they could've been. Just because she was trying to avoid heat damage doesn't mean she shouldn't lose a point if other girls lost 1 for the same thing-

Jasdawazz it can really depend on how you blow dry it and the products you use to prep and style. I do my mom’s hair and that getting it bone straight is possible so long as you use silicones, small sections, and literally just don’t sweat (which is part of my theory on why every salon I’ve ever been in has the AC on BLAST even in winter)

This is interesting! As a west coast stylist, I use J Beverly Hills and do the J Beverly Hills blow out which is similar to this technique. Is all the rage on the west coast still! It’s funny cause some stylists feel Velcro rollers are tacky and then some feel brushes are. It’s all about each stylist and how you obtain the look the client wants. It’s so interesting the different in coastal trends!

Most oil 'layers' will trap in water, and you have to make sure that the hair is DRY before you apply it as a heat protectant. It actually mimics what silicone based products do for the hair, coating it and providing that layer of protection. BUT there is one big caveat- coconut oil has a smoke point of 350 degrees. What actually happens to the coconut oil molecule once it hits the smoke point isn't really known. I mean obviously, you see it smoking from the macro view (hence the name), but at the micro level, .. well. I'm sure there's info on it somewhere but it's really hard to find (I've scoured the internet for info and found nothing). Meaning that we don't know if the molecule experiences a kind of.. explosion. Similar to how water, when heated on the hair with a flat iron over its boiling point, will explode in the hair shaft and cause damage. Maybe coconut oil doesn't do that, but it's kind of playing with fire since we don't know. I actually DO use coconut oil as a heat protectant since I have very very fine hair that can easily straighten under 350, but most gals probably have to jack up their straightener heat to over that in order to get their hair straight. So. For them I would reserve coconut oil for an after 'ends' treatment only, and stick with the silicone heat protectant. Love it for bleaching hair though. I always saturate my hair in coconut oil overnight or for 3-4 hours at least before bleaching. But again, if the bleach causes an extreme lifting of the cuticle and the coconut oil penetrates the shaft deeply (meaning it's still there in decently high concentration after the bleach, wash and dry), the individual would still need to be wary of the temperature at which they use on their hair. The coconut oil is still there and could still theoretically cause damage if heated above 350. Edit,-- just for kicks, I looked up the smoke point of sebum (human oil that naturally coats & infuses your hair). Couldn't find any info after a few minutes of looking, other than a statement that animal fats (as opposed to plant fats) have a low smoke point. So if the oils act in a similar way after hitting their smoke points, then the effects of coconut oil and other low-smoke point oils might not be THAT bad. It depends on if they react in a similar manner. I mean, if sebum has a low smoke point, then we have all most likely been over 300 degrees with our hair at one point and have caused the sebum to hit its smoke point, so. Maybe it's not such a big deal. Maybe if you're a gal with super thick hair (thick hair shafts that require 400 degrees + to get straight) try a section up underneath wit coconut oil for a few weeks and see if it incurs any substantial damage. If not, well. I guess then go for it!

There was a study. Hair was washed and reblown out 25 times in each case, slowly upping the heat of the blow dryer that would be applied at least 10cm away from the hair for about 30minutes total. They found that in order to have no heat damage you need to be under 150°F. For minimal damage, under 185°F (this was done without heat protectors and the study also measuring with heat protector ingredients in concentrations of 1-2% which most heat protectant use this concentration for these ingredients). When properly covered, it minimized damage by around 50%. So if you use a heat protectant and go under 185°F you’re likely fine (it uses a lot of direct powerful flow in order to lower the heat needed) revlon one step hair dryer brush was tested to be below this heat, so thats what I use. But very curly to coily hair needs above that temperature- duh it’s more resistant. So yeah, don’t be shocked when you see someone using 300°-400°F on their hair. That’s what the typical flat iron is in temperature too. Which is why it’ll just burn right through your hair if you leave it on it. Best to avoid flat irons to the best of your ability. Except when you can’t and honestly idk how 3c and up don’t fry their hair. The trichilogist on RU-vid that taught me all this has coily hair and I think she actually does manage to use very low heat when blowing out her hair because she mentions aiming for these temperatures. However, I don’t think she gets that silky smooth finish either. Silk comes with the expensive price of damage and possibly loosing your curl “heating training”- which is extremely damaged curly hair, I guess it’s that way for anyone with curly hair tbh, better to just try to get close to it with products after or before instead and give your hair break when you can.

Brad, black girl hair is different than everyone else's. Its kinkier, curlier, sometimes much frizzier, and MUCH thicker. The method shes blow drying is called stretching. Because we have heavy shrinkage, we stretch the hair while drying to bring out the curls. Our hair will straighten best when stretched out in the process. The brush you use with curly hair would not be the best for our hair texture. Gonna tear our curls instead of loosen them 😒🙄🤦🏾‍♀️ I like you Brad, but please learn black girl hair. I know you like curly hair, but you gotta educate yourself on African hair boo

Amber Goree not necessarily true especially since she isn’t using the nozzle, so the damage she was trying to avoid from a brush she got from the blow dryer burning her hair without a nozzle. The method she used was just a waste of time and unpolished, this is coming from a natural hair stylist.

"Just holding the strands out and blow drying " is a method called "Stretching the Hair". It is actually VERY effective and healthy for naturally curly hair. If you're going to blow dry your hair on wet hair, when you use a brush, you increase the risk of SNAPPING your strands since they are so coily. When you stretch it the way Maryam Hampton does, you allow your curls to dry partially stretched first to PROTECT IT. Then once you are done with that step, you can go in with a brush and blow dry the hair further to stretch it even more. This is the SAFEST method for black hair. We gotta stay educated on black hair in salons guys❤❤

For the third girl, she’s doing a technique called stretching. You stretch the hair section you are holding and let the roots become both dry and straighten( or stretched) while blow drying that section. It just helps with either to prevent heat damage, stretching your roots, and helping with making curly/kinky hair straight while blow drying it.

Not getting the hair thoroughly dried first is not a pretty sight.

Lol Brad, the third woman is doing a form of a tension method. I have similar hair & length, and use the technique often. It allows stretching to occur while keeping the blow dryer at a distance and on a lower temperature setting. First we stretch our hair, then we move on to the steps you mentioned. All while avoiding high temperature settings and still getting the most out of the blow dry. I think she doesn’t want to achieve bone straight hair. But typically the results would be pretty sleek, especially when doing a silk press. Lol Also, all of our hair isn’t dry, dry hair(or however many times you said it) we all can’t afford to use hella products w/o looking crazy, greasy and/or stiff. Lol

michele anne You can use coconut oil on your hair before flat ironing it, if and when the temperature of the flat iron doesn't pass 177° C. Due to coconut oil being mainly used for cooking high heat will “cook” the oil which will burn the hair off! There are plenty of RU-vid videos on people using coconut oil and burning their hair off because their flat iron being on high heat. But flat ironing your hair on low isn’t effective so what’s the point? Just use a heat protectant for straightening days and coconut oil for deep conditioning.

Coconut oil is used most often in black hair. What it does for our hair is what you said lock in moisture. So what I use to do was only use coconut oil when I was wearing a protective style, and my hair grew about 3 inches in a few months. I never used direct heat when I used coconut oil. I think the first girl used it correctly since it wasn't a lot to absolutely fry her hair but it also wasn't enough to be effective.
@krismiskarol
@krismiskarol 4 года назад
For longer thicker/curlier hair, the stretching method is actually very effective because the purpose is to just flatten the curl and dry the hair. Done right, you also cut back a significant amount of heat that is used. Using a brush and blow drying section by section takes a lot more time, energy, arm strength and your hair wont be any straighter by the end of the flat iron process lol The flat iron does a better job of making it smooth and straight as long as your sections are small and you do the chasing method. It took me 10 years and a lot of fluffy flat iron jobs to figure that out. Maryam did the best job in my opinion and her process is why her curly hair is so healthy.

lowkey watching this video was hard lol. having textured hair myself I'm just sitting over here listening to Brad talk like.... oof. Textured hair is a VERY expansize topic that most hairdressers aren't taught about in school. No one can look at another person's curly and know what's best for it. You have to sit down with that person and learn their hair. BUT only if you're specialized in curly hair. Not that this particularly is bad, but even the terminology/ how Brad perceives and talks about the hair is wack to me. It was a fun video and this comment isn't to be taken so seriously I just wanted to say what I said.

brad: comes at everyone for techniques they use that are HORRIBLE me: agreeing and shaming them with him Also me: wraps my hair in a towel, brushes my hair with a regular brush from root to ends, doesn’t go slow with the straightener, uses box dye, and cut my own hair 🙃😂

@@horseeladyyy1015 nope, normal towels are really rough on the hair and can cause it to break easier and cause more frizz. Microfiber towels are perfect to combat these or even using a cotton tee-shirt.

Main takeaway: use a concentrator nozzle
@misschelseanatasha

The reason why the last girl is using that particular blow dry method is bc with our hair type/texture using a brush creates a lot of tension in our hair that can create breakage as it drys. Especially with her length

I feel like it’s crazy to put natural oils on hair when you’re about to heat style. Bc what does oil do when you heat it up? It fries. You are not making fried chicken sis. Try again. Also the first girl pointed the blow dry nozzle up which raises the cuticle. Keep it pointed down.

Melijah Carter First of all, it’s not dumb to use common sense. Where tf does it make sense to put natural oils on your hair before flat ironing it? Yea oils are healthy but that doesn’t make sense. We are on here being nice. Don’t use names that you probably wouldn’t call me if we were face to face.
@greenlemons1321

Melijah Carter it doesn’t really burn your hair but it doesn’t do anything good. Why waste good oil when you can just use it after?

@@daijamatthews Using oil works on my hair and many others hair. Its the way you use them. And even if it doesnt work for you it doesnt mean it cant work for other. Coconut oil helps strengthen the hair and adds shine and heal hair damage. So its not about common sense at all. Just because some one stated his/her opinion doesnt make it wrong.

@Stevi Faccenda it depend on the hair type. It helps for my hair type and many of my friends. It probably does't work on yours. But used on the right type hair it really helps.

I always blowdry my hair without a nozzle on the cold setting to a 70 % dry mark to create volume. After that I attach the nozzle to my blow dryer and turn up the heat setting to medium heat and kind of straightening my hair with a brush and the blowdryer that way. I love the technique and it's working well for me with a minimum of heat damage.
