Steep and loose trails CAN be scary and sketchy, but these pro mtb tips will help you to stay in control and to interpret fear in a new way. As a pro mtb coach I see many mountain bikers lose control on steep trails, which is why I want to share 3 mtb tips which will truly make a difference. Tip 4 might be to relax. It’s easy to over-grip on steep, loose or techy sections and this affects handling. Subtle changes in how much you grip your bars makes big differences in handling. Great stuff as usual Roxy. Thank you!

Thank you for adding, Richard. Absolutely agree. I could've given at least 10 tips more, but I wanted to keep it short and sweet. Much more (and more exclusive tips) on my Patreon channel, though 🙂

Tip #3 is so true. Focus on where you want to go not at what you want to avoid. I ride mountain bike in the forest between trees to cross train for skiing in the trees during ski season. When you develop this skill it becomes automatic when riding or skiing your line.

The vision thing is a great pointer and also the braking. I used to ride my back break a lot and hang my butt over the tire, few times I noticed I lost control and my back tire would slide too much or come out from under and I'd have to bail. I watched a couple videos and learned to crouch into the center of my bike more than lean back super far. I may still lean back a little but try to say positioned above the rear axle. When you have a OTB from grabbing the front brake by accident, it makes you wana stay away from it, but in combination and knowing HOW much to us in combination with your rear brake, it works much better. Theres a lot of muscle memory involved i think too. I've been practicing on a steep section with a few different lines about 4-5 times now. I learned the different line options and figured out which ones worked for me to get down. Once I memorized where to go, I got down it with one slight little dab this past ride, so hoprfully next ride or two down with no dab. It helps me to set reachable goals each ride I'm out, weather it's a new obstacle like that steep line, getting up a technical section, or adding more miles to a route. Great video amd happy riding!

Also, I have a FUNdamentals course which will allow you to practice without ingraining limiting habits. You will find both here: www.roxybike-coaching.com

Thanks for the reminders! I'll be doing some steep and (hopefully not too)slippy terrain tomorrow so I will be keeping these things in my conciousness...local weather right now is about Zero-4 Celcius and I am expecting a mix of hard frozen ground and wet muddy ground! It's gonna be interesting 😰

Thx. FUN!da!MENTALS! I would probably have added body position but the deliberate practice is SOOO important.
@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire
@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Год назад
Thanks. Absolutely, Body position is always an error for most people and most skills 😅 but it’s impossible to correct in such terrain. It requires off trail structured practice to correct. In this video I wanted to give 3 precise errors people can pretty quickly correct, even out on the trails. Are you already working with my FUNdamentals course? roxybike.podia.com/mtb-fundamentals-mini-course Sending my warm regards to you and thank you for the comment! 🧚‍♀️ Roxy

Hello Roxy, I really enjoy your videos and your break down on everything is so helpful. In your videos related to steep rocky technical descents, you mention that practice should not happen on the trail section you are trying to accomplish but rather in a more controlled environment. How does one simulate those technical obstacles, line choice, traction control and speed control in a controlled environment? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Again thank you so much for your videos. Best, Ed

Hey Ed, thanks for the comment. All we need to do is: practice the individual skill elements in a safe learning zone - then practice them often enough to automatize them - and then bring them back to a performance zone. More about the skills needed here: How To Ride Scary Terrain | Conquer Rocky, Chunky, Blocked Downhill Trails with Control ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fxDpHR1iJjM.html More about learning zone and performance zone here: The 3 Stages of Learning Skills ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u54_U4GqNUs.html And here you’ll learn to PERFORM all these skills with my proven drills: roxybike.podia.com/mtb-fundamentals-mini-course And here you can try my drills for free: roxybike.podia.com/trackstand-challenge-drill-to-skill-with-roxy Roxy

Thank you for the tips. I also have a question, do you think Its better to have wider tires for rocky terrain because I dont have a really expensive bike its $250 and Its tires are not really that wide.

I have a question for you. What rear hub would you recommend that has enough engagement points that it works well for technical terrain? I'm riding a hardtail and currently have 36 points of engagement, or 10 degrees, but I'm wishing it was a bit more.

Update: I got a set if I9 Hydra hubs on a Spank 359 vibracore rear and Spank 350 for the front. They are absolutely incredible and I'm addicted to the instant engagement. I mounted these wheels on my new Giant Trance X2 and handbrake looked back!!
