Great video! Keep them coming. Also what brand of pants are you wearing in the video? They look sturdy with lots of pockets.

Thank you. I'm going to be posting more. I've been spending more time on our other platform 🙂 ru-vid.com. Yes the pants are very nice. They are the Jobman which you can purchase in the US. My daily pants are from UK called Snickers. I prefer this over the Jobman because I can front top load the knee pads. The Jobman you have to bottom load them. Plus the sizing was at the time not so accurate. So it's well worth spending the money to have the shipped over from UK. They last me over 2 years working 5 days a week with 1 per day. I put a lot of time on my knees with shaping, foundations or flatwork. So having pants which I can double up my knee pads is key. I should do a video. Here's a link for a blog I did some time back. Ty for your comment! Mark www.rockinwalls.com/2015/06/work-pants-with-knee-pads-sold-in-usa.html?m=1

Awesome video you are a great instructor. What is the difference between NY bluestone and PA bluestone?
@RockinWalls
@RockinWalls Год назад
Best of my knowledge nothing. All the same veins. Quarry to Quarry will very in colors. Heck the same Quarry can have multiple colors.

Pretty much the same. I've been a truck driver in the bluestone business for several years, and have dealt with quarries on either side of the state line. It is also true that the shade of blue can vary greatly, even from different areas in the same quarry.

@@mtnvortex This is what google says: PA bluestone's edges are normally sawn. NY bluestone is commonly available in a Natural Cleft finish in Full Color range and is known for its hardness and density. Another characteristic of NY bluestone is that the material can sometimes come with a combination of sawn and snapped edges. The pieces I have the edges seem to be chiseled and snapped. They are also natural cleft and full color so I'd say what I have is NY bluestone.

@@gfriedman99 Being completely honest, and working in the business every day, I know that you'll find this on either side of the line. I'm not sure who came up with this differentiation, but I have my doubts, and I'm guessing there was a bit of marketing involved, trying to make one seem more desirable than the other. Seriously. If you saw where I go everyday, you'd suspect the same. I often criss cross the border throughout the day, en route to one quarry or another. While many competitors in the stone business make a point to remain cordial and cooperative with one another, rivalries and grudges do surface. It's not uncommon for brutal business tactics to take place, in an attempt to harm a particular vendor, source, etc.. Overall, it is a very competitive business, and can be quite cutthroat at times, particularly when sales slump. "Hush hush" business relationships and alliances do develop, especially surrounding rock sources. It's a very interesting business, with lots of colorful characters.

Just like @mtnvortex, google is completely wrong! They are all the same. Each query will have different types of stones. They are set up to quarry. The bottom line is natural cleft, saw thermal, squares recs, chiseled faces....end of the day its bluestone. Certain sections of the quarry at different layers will have either soft or hard. Hard is used for making large square blocks, which may become squares and recs, i.e., pattern, steps.... Softer veins will most likely be wall stone, steppers.... It's all what the quarry has to offer and the resources the quarry has to get what they need or are allowed to quarry by the governing bodys ie permits.....environment organizations.... 🙂

Is dry set really dry? Seems like with the differing thickness of natural cleft it would be easier to set in a slurry or mud.
@RockinWalls
@RockinWalls Год назад
Yes, if it is set in mud or as you say slurry is don't you take a way free draining and flexable system? Season change it should be able to breath moving up and down as the earth would. If you do a slurry and you need to replace, repair or adjust how easy would it be? If some one wants to add mortar just do it all the way and put in a concrete footer. Other wise it doesn't make sense. I'm on a job now that is bedded on stone dust over 15 years and is perfect. Then the same job has bluestone steppers and pavers with a lime stone dust and everything has moved. Because it's holding to much water. The older patio is set on a soap stone & something. This stuff is amazing. To bad the quarry closed up. That's why I like the 3/8" washed angular gravel. Free draining no need for compaction. Easy to set in and make adjustments. This is what works for me which doesn't mean it will work for you. Great question!

What motar mix are you guys using for natural bluestone clef for steps?
@RockinWalls
@RockinWalls 11 месяцев назад
Non here, I set everything dry on the backend as if I'm building a wall. I may sometimes use gravel to level out on top of my packing stone behind each step. I like to set 2" onto the front step.
