On today's episode of "Looking Back", we'll be exploring the career of Jason Lee (pro skater, award winning actor, photographer).
In modern times, Jason Lee is mostly known for his various acting roles (Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Almost Famous, Dogma, Enemy of the State, Vanilla Sky, My Name is Earl, The Incredibles, Alvin and the Chipmunks), but he originally made a name for himself as a professional skateboarder. Jason was one of the first amateur riders for Steve Rocco's company SMA Rocco Division, and eventually World Industries. Jason made an even bigger name for himself on Blind Skateboards as a professional rider, eventually leaving to start Blue Skateboards with Chris Pastras (which turned into Stereo Skateboards). From there, he entered the world of acting through various music videos (Sonic Youth, Redd Kross), and eventually met director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back). Kevin cast Jason as Brodie Bruce in Mallrats, and the rest was history.

Being an early millennial, Mallrats was one of those iconic movies that defined the times for my generation, and I think it was too culturally relevant for critics to understand (unlike something like Dazed and Confused which was a time piece and thus something adult critics at the time could understand since they were likely teens in the 70s). Watching it back then, I knew it would be a cult classic and I didn't even know that it bombed at the box office and with critics. There was just nothing else even remotely like it, it turned the teen / early 20 something genre on its head, disposing with the lame cliches and bringing in something that felt authentic, if somewhat corny. That movie made the characters seem cool while also being hapless losers who hadn't figured their lives out at the same time, and it didn't treat comics and video games as just some side joke about nerds. Jason Lee's character was something I wanted to be but was not yet at the time: a confident guy who was comfortable in his own skin as a somewhat nerdy skater type, who was always being witty and making insightful comments. He has at least a dozen iconic lines in this film that I still love and repeat. Nobody like this had ever been made cool in a movie before, he was kinda someone to look up to in a way, an unlikely anti-hero. I never liked My Name is Earl despite really liking Jason Lee, so that was a disappointment for me. I had high hopes after finding out that he was the star of a TV show. It is too bad he never did any other TV projects. I feel like he could have been great in an adult buddy sitcom with young adults, the sort that became popular later on like Workaholics, New Girl, It's Always Sunny, etc. Or maybe his own HBO show, where he could just let the expletives fly. He could have a been a great character in something like Silicon Valley or Californication, maybe even Shameless. I'm happy for the guy to have made a fortune on dumb voiceover stuff so he could effectively retire and move on with his life, but it's hard not to think of what could have been. He is just so good at playing a witty and likable guy who you also kinda want to punch. He always felt authentic.

@michael wright A lot of kids today don't know their skate history, that Airwalk was one of the dopest skate shoe companies at one time. I had so many OG pairs back in the early to mid 90's. That was a while before I started saving sneakers and taking care of them. All the skate shoes I bought were to skate in, and I'd buy like Nikes or Timberlands to keep nice when I wasn't skating. Looking back, there's so many pairs of skate shoes from the 90's I wish I would have saved. The Airwalks alone would be, of course, the Jason Lee, as well as the NTS, the Ones, the Jim Shoe, the Bowling Shoe, etc...

Wow. I was a big fan of blind boards when I started skating in the late 90s. But as time went on their boards just kinda stayed the same never innovating so I kept swapping brands. I had no idea Jason Lee was the owner back then. God I miss 90s culture. What a time to live through. Riding my bike to school. Coming home and skating and/or playing nintendo 64 then just disappearing to a friends house without telling my parents and just showing back up around 8-9pm. The world was so much simpler back then. Then 9/11 happened. I was like 12 years old at the time. The local skatepark had opened on the 7th or 8th of that september. I remember going to school and quickly realizing something was up. A bunch of kids were going home. One kid came to school late and told me "the world train center was hit by a plane" Me being 12 couldn't understand why a train station would get hit by a plane or what a terrorist was. Anyways I only cared about one thing. The skatepark. When I got home from school I begged my parents to take me to the skatepark they tried to explain why it was a bad idea but I countered with "but that means it will be empty!" I think I got my way and went but none of my friends were there. After that things have just gone downhill. Man I'd give anything to go back and live for a couple of days in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Cool, this was interesting to watch. Learned a ton about this guy. I honestly only knew of him from Scientology. Never seen my name is Earl. I kinda remember Alvin and the chipmunks from when my boys were kids. See, I worked so much back then (dental field) I missed everything and was never home. Never even to this day had cable tv. Lot of VHS and DVD back then tho. About ten maybe fifteen yrs ago my ex boss who is now one of my greatest friends was getting brainwashed into handing over thousands to the "church". They used this guy, Tom Cruise, Leah Remini, John Travolta ect as a marketing tool to become a high level donor. You get to hang out at the celebrity center in FL where you MIGHT run into them. I think he has since left. If so, great for him. That cult is dangerous. Woah. This brought back some crazy ass memories. YT recommends the craziest stuff to me. Any who, good video.

I would have, but discussing religious topics is extremely risky on RU-vid. People get their videos taken down all the time for stuff like that, I put a lot of work into this video and didn't want it to go to waste. Not only that, but the dude has been out of scientology since 2015, it's not my place to discuss his life on that personal of a level - I just wanted to cover his career as a skater/actor/photographer. I'm going to pin this comment because I've been asked this question many times.
