If I was doing that, I’d place the cutter just above the work piece, then loosen the collet to let the tool sit directly on the workpiece. Then tighten. There’s your zero right there. You could also set the bit on a feeler gauge of known thickness if you’re cutting very soft material with a sharp v-bit and subtract the feeler gauge thickness.

Love my avid cnc, I have a question. I'm currently running mach3, im upgrading to servos and was wondering about mach4, my question is that if my computer would ever die, would I need to purchase a new license or can the license be transferred to a replacement pc ?
