Pro Tools FANBOY Tries CUBASE! 

Oh man- as someone who has used PT extensively for many many years in studios, I have to tell you- the Cubase mixer is going to blow you away once you dig into it

former Pro Tools user here! Now on Cubase 12. it´s so wonderful!!! Midi, Audio Editing, the Mixer, Control Room, Direct Offline Processing, Cycle Markers, Rendering options, top Onstock Plugins... Cubase = PT+Logic

I personally think Cubase is the Swiss Pocketknife of DAWs. It's so versatile and very professional. You can easily produce songs/create beats like you can in Live AND track and mix in a solid way like in ProTools and then it has so many smart features! I see a lot of people switching over to Cubase these days. Rightfully so, I think. The sheer amount of tutorials they produce to get you started in any genre, to even in depth Q&A with a Cubase guru, twice a week, live! That's dedication!

I am a Nuendo user (Nuendo is Cubase with post features added), and watching this made me excited and smile to see you excited to see the cool stuff it can do! It was like when I switched from PT to Nuendo. I didn't need to watch the video, but it was cool to see.

I used PT all my life until I change to Cubase 8 years ago. I run a commercial studio like yourself. I need to use PT for outside projects sometimes......but I literally only use it to export sessions. PT is absolutely arcane compared to Cubase. like yourself I work large sessions with life bands. once you learn how to really edit in Cubase you will never want to use PT again. I am not kidding man. PT is so so so so horrible and slow. congrats on your awakening! your life has just become much easier! it is cute how protools have been adding features in the past few releases that have been in Cubase for over a decade. no joke. cheers!

Glad to see that Cubase treated you well from the onset. I remember seeing one review for v11 describing it as the “ProTools killer” because it introduced in Cubase two features that kept him in that PT world: the EQ comparison/edit within the Channel Strip (useful for that BG/BD conundrum), ability to import tracks from other projects (including and especially effects, automation, and any other relevant combination). I’ve described Cubase as a DAW for one who has a composer-producer mindset. There are a lot of features that are MIDI-related and would satisfy the composer in me. But there’s also plenty of audio engineering features that satisfies the producer in me. Looking forward to seeing your DAW journey.

Cool idea for a video series. I’ve been a Cubase user for 2 decades. You can tell they are committed to constant improvement. Things got way better when YAMAHA got involved with Steinberg.

Cubase probably the most in depth DAW, many new users are put off due to so many features. Been using it for years and I am learning new things all the time, you sort of forget some of the features are there after a while, glad RU-vid exists with Dom Sigalas, Steinberg and Chris Selim showing off the features. The included plugins are brilliant too.

Cubase is one amzing DAW. I work on Studio One, FL and a bit in ProTools and Live and Cubase have so much to offer.

I've been a Cubase user for the last 15 years or so....The workflow always clicked really well for me. So much awesome versatility.

Also a long time (not as long as you) PT user. Just picked up a Cubase licence the other day with the recent sale they're having. Very impressed with it so far. Been mixing in Atmos a bunch recently and have been shocked how fast I'm able to mix compared to the PT/Dolby Renderer combination.

Love this one! Another tip is when you make the Fx channels you can add the plugins right when you’re naming the fx channel. There’s a drop down menu that shows your plugins in that same window when you’re creating the bus or parallel tracks

Despite being somewhat opinionated regarding DAW choice, i am looking forward to seeing more in this series, this is great!

Love your videos & content - The tracking of the recording your working with sounds really Killer too ! I bought Cubase 12 pro when it came out and I’m totally a pro tools nut also - since the Nubus systems in 1998 ! I’ve not forced myself to look at Pro 12 properly yet but this video has kind of inspired me to revisit it. Great stuff as ever sir 👍🏻👌

Welcome to the wonderful world of Cuabse :-) A few years ago, I did just like you, except it was for my first DAW. I tested a few DAWs, discovered Cubase, and "bam!" stuck with it ever since. And then a few months back I got a macBook Air (perfect machine for tracking on location, since it has no fans) and tried Logic Pro X. Man... did I feel lost! Everything is in another menu, every button is elsewhere. I realized switching DAWs is a nightmare. But you're doing it with dedication and style. Respect!

Pressing F3 opens up the large mixer window, that's what you've probably looked for. There you can really customize the mixer, setting up zones where you "dock" faders to 3 dedicated screen areas, left, middle & right. You have also mixer history where it records all changes you have made in the mixer and plugins, displays it as a list where you can go back and fourth to undo /redo changes. You can also hide tracks and have mix snapshots. Overall, pressing the keys "G" or "H" sets your horizontal zoom, shift "G" & "H" sets vertical zoom. Cubase is my favorite DAW specially for mixing. NUENDO is basically the same but with focus on the post production department. I'm using Cubase since V2.0 on the Atari. and i have to say: You did very well without a manual !!

Use the mixing desk you have a choice of 3, Press F3 or go to studio and select it from there, also highlight x amount of tracks and click on quick link (Q at the to of the page) and choose an insert and it will insert the effect on all selected tracks.

The drum bus volume automation at 8:00 minutes sounded interesting.

Couple things to try from another PT convert that also made me freak out. 1) When working with hitpoints on the left hand screen there is a button to turn hitpoints into midi - in seconds you have midi for sample replacement that’s phase accurate. 2) you can customize all shortcuts to be identical to pro tools super easy. 3) you can create custom batch processes in the logical editor (one click of a button and my entire project is colorized correctly).

yes, you can see the entire layout by switching to the mix console in the TOP toolbar, you have to enable it via the cog wheel in the upper right-hand corner of the screen

They have to be in a folder, and you choose group editing, OH you got it

Haha, so much fun, watching you try Cubase for the first time. 😀 As a Cubase user for about 20 years now, I can totally understand your surprise. 🙂 It was the same for me all those years ago, when I was switching from Logic to Cubase back then. And it has of cause improved even a lot more since then (version 5) to now (version 12).

PT user since 2007 here. I’ve just switched to Cubase. And I love it so much that I also bought Nuendo. Lol.

Cubase has been a new friend to my music production. For years, since 2012 I was only mixing in Ableton live, including music for both myself and my clients whom I mix for, but lately it gives me all I need. The one thing that is missing inside of Ableton live is the returns, there are few of them, and while you can make up to 12, I believe, it's still never enough, as you have to turn off stuff using automation, and it gets pretty confusing. Automation alone can get confusing too, because you have nothing to help you keep track of your progress, and I save everything, each little move after about 5 mins of time, and progress from there, using the letter naming system. Cubase is truly a mixing dream.

Great video and watching you be amazed about how something was made easier in cubase vs Pro Tools was the best part of it. I dabble in Pro Tools but am looking at Nuendo for my post production mastering ( mostly because I am tired of Avid's robbery). I would like to see you play with cubase some more.

Check out the control room if you have multiple speakers you can insert something like sonar works with the appropriate profile for each monitor and the mic console F3 gives you the channel strip feel for mixing starting at the top with gain, hi and low pass phase Rev then inserts and the Cubase channel strip eq, comp,… and sends cue mixes output routing then pan and fader you can even show the wave form vertically at the top. Also check out supervision for meters any kind phase level loudness spectrum and a lot more

You mentioned trying Reaper again. I would love to see that. I used to use a pirated version of Cubase in the early 2000's so I could learn on. I eventually bought Pro Tools, and eventually trying out Reaper, to buying a Reaper License. Loved watching you trying out Cubase. Today, I would never pirate any software. I was young and stupid back then.

Man I am so happy that you’ve done this video! I have been using Cubase for years now and a lot of features we have available or standard and I cringe when I watch videos and they don’t have the features. So glad you enjoyed it hopefully this brings you on the team lol

it's great to see you loving cubase, honestly if you think that workflow is fast wait until you get into Q-link, the full mixer window and channel strip, the control room, plugin manager and soo soooo many more features that make me feel like i'm walking in mud when I go to another DAW, I use Cubase mainly but also use pro-tools, ableton and have experience in Cakewalk but cubase is by far (for me) the best DAW i've come across, it just get's out of your way and anything you think you can do you probably can and more.

I'm Cubase for twenty years. To me, it's always felt the most mix console-y right out of the box. Glad to relive the joy with you! Try Logic Pro next. I've found it to be exhilarating and utterly confounding at the same time

Seeing your excitement using Cubase is great. Hitpoint editor is much better when you use the break-out window. Most of the windows that use the 'lower lane' are harder to use in my experience, including the mixer. Cubase works best with multi-monitor setups.

I love Pro Tools for audio. I love Logic Pro for virtual instrument programming and composition. Cubase’s audio workflow is so quick once you learn where everything is. Their MIDI editing is second to none.

I'm a Cubase user for 20 years and I love it. Also I have to say that if I started over again today maybe my favorite DAW would be Reaper, mainly for the price but if you can afford it Cubase is (in my opinion) the best option so far. It's so easy to group tracks, assign FX, VCA's, sends for tracking......it's awesome how fast it can speed up your workflow. And the Control Room.....OMG, it's a really really nice Tool that you MUST try.

Great video. Cubase was my first ever DAW and I never found it difficult - I've heard Many times that the learning curve is steep, bu never found that to be the case. Which is crucial, as you don't want to be spending your creative spark energy in trying to figure stuff out. In fact, I learned how to quantise live drums from you trying to figure out Cubase! Brother, I and many others in Nashville have been using Steinberg for nearly 30 years from back in the days when it was simply the best MIDI programming editor. I’ve used Pro Tools and ALWAYS hated how hard they make it. I own Studio One and like it better than PT, but it doesn’t have nearly all the features of Cubase. Especially Cubase 12. The window arrangement workspace jump screens are amazing for accessing your channel, group, and FX faders. Quick commands make Cubase a breeze. There are a ton of 15 min YT videos that show exactly how to utilize all of the new and long time features. Cubase beats them all with regard to all the built in features that others just don’t have. And the price point is a freaking no brainer. If you stay with the major upgrades within the typical 2 to 3 year cycles, the upgrade renewals are cheap AF. Maybe $150 to $200 if you time the holiday specials. In fact, a fresh new Cubase Pro license was recently a total of $364 or something. I blew up my friend’s texts when I saw that price. Trust me, a 30 year Nashville producer and industry pro; Cubase is your best choice. I’ve been through the other apps as well and it was a waste of time. Including the Harrison. You can’t beat that German engineering mindset. They are beasts on mechanics, Neumann mics, and software engineering. I can easily help you setup your window workspace jump screens, assignable to Option+1 through Option+9. Plenty of arrangements with that many screen arrangement options. Just go to your “Workspaces” drop menu. Or look up a video on it. 🤘😎 Rock on, brother🎶

In your "edit track window" you can choose if the "strip" hits the "inserts", or the "inserts" hit the strip. default is inserts into strip, great for tracking, for mixing I lean to strip into inserts. In the edit track window above your inserts, you will see inserts tab and strip tab and eq. next to the strip tab you will see a grey "mushroom" click that and your strip and eq are now feeding into your plugins. The small circles within those tabs if you click on them will disable or enable. EQ, Strip, Inserts. Yellow is disabled Great for "A B ing". In the insert's column, the bright green line can be dragged up or down. the slots under the green line are post fader, slots above are pre fader, so you can choose how many pre and post inserts you need for any channel. To access the "edit track window" select a track and hit the "e" under the solo button.

I love your video and I’m actually watching it for the second time now. As a long time ProTools user I am used to change the track order within the mixer window. I cannot find a way to do this in Cubase. Do you know how it’s done? Is changing track orders only possible in the edit window?

Also if you go to the top of the arrangement page and right click in the space under the menus you will get more options to choose from.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but you can copy fx chains my simply clicking and dragging the insert box to the target channel. It’s so easy to use.

Glad you enjoyed Cuabse bro. I have both Cubase and Pro Tools. While I have some songs mixed in Pro Tools I like and don't want to redo. I will admit that beyond that, I only use Cubase. Man, you haven't even scratched the surface at all yet. Wait till you discover chord tracks, chord pads, sampler track, etc. Once you get into to composing side Cubase will be indispensable to you.

You did great job using your applied knowledge from slow tools to cubase. Maybe Try next working in the mixer screen, learn about q-link. also look up silence audio, watch some videos on control room setup, if you really want to be blown away. Also try not to have record enable while mixing on any channels, that's why you were getting some artifacts. if you go to preferences/editing/ projects & mixing / enable record on audio/midi uncheck. all that does is automatically alway turn on record when you select a track... you can always click on enable record when you need it.

Hey, I’d watched your vid of the Avid support call and felt the frustration. I’ve been a Cubase / Nuendo user for decades and for me, if I can’t do it in these DAWs, I don’t need it. I recently installed Pro Tools 2022 and it was a regression. I’m really excited for you and I hope you’re able to find a DAW and company that treats you better than Avid. By the way, Cubase updates and support are baked into the one time price of the software and there’s no up charge. Please be sure to check out the extensive drag & drop as well. Your excitement is infectious.

Massive time saver, first select the all tracks that you want to have sends on, then when creating the send try adding the insert in the same dialogue box as when creating the sends, all done in one go. Cubase /Nuendo are insanely good for mixing purposes. Great DAWs in my opinion.

Thing is you’ll love tracking in Cubase with bands with features like control room and if you run into a heavy sequence synth situation Cubase holds its timing better than everybody

I went from PT to Cubase. At first, I was like "I don't know" but after I stuck with it and improved my workflow, I like it.

Would love to see a Nuendo deep dive. A couple other folks I know use it, but they're fan-boi's and I'm not sure how impartial their advice is. I moved from Logic Pro X to Cubase 12 and never ever went back, Cubase just kills it dead, I tried everything for the work we do and Cubase was the winner, hands down. even its built-in plugins are stunning. i started on the first version decades ago (that's how old I am) and now iv returned, its like coming home lol sure it ain't perfect but its damn close and in my opinion it does SOUND better than logic, if that's possible. lol cubase fan boy

I've never used Pro Tools but I've been using Cubase since it was first out on the Atari 1040 ST. It was just a midi sequencer way back then.I stopped recording for quite a while but came back to Cubase when Cubase 7 was the one. Haven't changed since then and I love it. I don't have the patience or time to learn a new DAW. I am thinking about Studio One though. I have a lite version of it just to check out.

If you do live band stuff, then you should definitely try Harrison Mixbus 32C. I've heard a few Pro Tools guys talk about how they use it strictly for the mixing process and PT for editing. It has a great saturation built-in, similar to HEAT, but better.

As a Cubase Fanboy, once you get a few preferences setup and some quick keys under your fingers this program can fly. If you plan on using it more, hit me up and I’m happy to share what I can.

Harrison Mixbus 32C will get you there twice faster, cant wait to see you try it. Just increase the scaling in Preferences for bigger everything.

Studio one does latency compensation for outboard gear as well in the "PIPELINE" stock plugin. automatically detects the latency and adds compensation.

hit points.. cool.. almost as flexible as Reaper's dynamic split/Stretch markers

as a protools user also, I am following this journey, be sure to try Harrisons Mixbus 32c v8 DAW as well, with EQ/dynamics/sends native on each channel. it seems quick to pick up but is it as good?

Been using cubase for years, still finding new shortcuts and even quicker ways to do things. Nice to see someone else enjoying it too Would recommend setting up the control room, especially for tracking, if you plan on using it again. I also have the mixer always open on a separate monitor as it's quicker/easier to see everything. I think F3 is the shortcut for the full screen mixer

You should open the channel strip is mext to the eq on the chanel edit (e) also f3 opens the full mixer

I came to Cubase from Pro Tools (in the Digidesign days) before recently switching to Reaper. I will say that Cubase has a tendency to make you not think much. It's not trying to be an analog style setup. It takes full advantage of the digital domain by giving you as many time and effort saving shortcuts as possible. Occasionally I'd work out of other studios and going back to PT was always a bit of a shock. I felt like I lost my engineering edge.

I'm an FL studio user, doing mainly electronic music, some instrumental proggy kinda rock aswell, but all in the box with programmed drums and amp sims. Would be interesting to see how FL studio would do in a more band oriented situation, specially using outboard gear. FLS has come a long way and they're constantly bringin out new features, so I wonder how it would compare.

I started out years ago with a prehistoric computer and an ancient cracked version (3?) of Cubase (I was wearing an eyepatch and a parrot on my shoulder so it was all good)... Anyways after a Windows update the computer just became useless so I built a new one. Since I'd grown up on Cubase I got version 8 Pro and I've been running that with no issues! I'm itching for an upgrade, especially since versions 10 and 11 came out. They have awesome features! I love the live recording and monitoring features that allow me to run individual mixes for everyone in the band.

The ONLY 3 things keeping me in pro tools are 1. Render volume automation to clip gain (& vice versa) 2. Being able to link specific inserts and having multiple "Groups" active for each track. 3. HEAT/Avid "PRO" Plugins

Duuddeee go back, make the mixer full screen and open up “strip” there you have a built in console with saturation, gates, comps, eq deesser and limiter. And you can rearrange them

Reason and Bitwig are not "protools replacements" but they are fun for making a lot of different kinds of "in the box" productions (DAWs for beatmakers, not for band tracking). Cubase is a good ProTools replacement candidate, as is StudioOne. Spend a minute and set up Control Room in Cubase. Also spend time building up track preset library of tracks configured with devices (instruments, plugin chains) that you have already dialed into a reference or starting point. That's a far far better way to work than a project template, in my opinion. Unless you always track the same 16 tracks with the same 16 mics and the same 16 channels. Project templating is one of cubase's main strengths. Advanced audio routing on Cubase is incredibly powerful, but StudioOne has some routing capabilities that outstrip Cubase. For Midi centric workflows, Cubase blows everything else away. The spectral editing in cubase if you get the full spectralayers product as well as cubase is inctredible.

Are you going to try Digital Performer? As a user of DP when it was just called “Performer” I highly suggest checking it out. It’s funky but in a good way. But I’d love to see your take.

Please can you check out ableton live as it has some cool built in effects and allows use of VSTs and External hardware

I'm not sure if it's going to be easy to sensibly evaluate between two DAWS until you use both equally for a long time. Some features I never thought existed in Cubase actually existed. There's still more I'm discovering even after 10 years of using Cubase. Cubase 12 Pro.
