Logic vs Protools session: LG: *logic has detected a different frame-rate on imported track, would you like to convert track or project frame-rate?* "Hmm, why yes I would!" PT: "WHY IS EVERYTHING SLOWED DOWN to Half speed!?" LG: *here you can add on a wide variety of synths, drum machines, or even orchestral sounds to your project for free* "Thanks logic! Wow I'm gonna make a movie score now!" PT: *here's Xpand.. horray* "Why does this sound like a shitty walmart toy piano?" *well if you dont like it you could always buy Omnisphere for $500* "N- no thanks" *thats right bitch, now.. make an instrument track, 3 aux tracks, and a mono and stereo audio track* "But I'm only plugging in a midi keyboard?" *I hope ya like routing!* LG: *silververb* *convolution reverb* "Hmm. I think I'll go with a nice convolution this time!" PT: "I need a reverb" *Airverb* *Dverb* *AirvebX* *OneverbDXair* "Wait wait wait.. what's the difference?" *I don't fuckin know just pick one* "Uh- ok.. I guess airverb?... Ahh man.. this sounds like shit" *they all sound like shit* LG: "Wow editing is so easy. All the tools ard right where they should be and self explanatory!" Protools: "How do I quantize a drum beat?" *whats the secret key command?* "I dunno" *shift backslash up minus down 7 ctrl/cmd 6... then you go to the transport window.. uncheck the green box with the picture of Adam Sandler.. go to my preferences and select 'Slip edit time reduce' save the project, click your heels three times, reload it in a different sample rate, go to the edit window. And after that.. you press CMD Q and your track will quantize* "Why couldn't I just press CMD Q!?" *that'd be way too obvious*

I think you're trying to use pro tools in the wrong way for the wrong things. Producers who use PT normally have a totally different workflow.

LG: you want to record a live session with plugins on? Sure it will flow smoothly. PT: you wan to track 1 thing with no plugins? You will get an random CPU overload and you’ll never figure out why. LG: third party plugin made the session crash? So you want to load the session how you first opened it or do you want to open the auto save we did right before crashing? PT:third party plugin causes a crash? Everything you did for the past 30 minutes is lost it was probably trash anyways. LG: oh you purchased logic great it will open right away not problems at all. PT: you bought pro tools? Here comes an iLok notification that tells you to authorize your use of this software and it’s going to take at least 5 minutes LG: you want to export only an MP3 sure no problem. PT: you want to export only an MP3 nope here’s a wav file that needs to come with it. LG: you want to write in midi information? Sure it’s modern looking and very easy to do so. PT: you want to write in midi information? We have the same piano roll we did since pro tools was created and it’s very hard to use. LG: you want to update? Sure no problem. PT: you want to update? You’ll need to buy the subscription first even though you bought our overpriced software outright.

I've used pro tools for several years, not as a pro, just an amateur, and never got too good at it. My old Mac G4 laptop didn't have the CPU power to run it anymore so I bought a better mac and started using Logic Pro X. I love it. I'm almost done tracking my 10 (non-midi) synthpop songs with it and getting ready to mix. I've been learning a ton about Logic and recording in general. I'll still use Pro Tools but Logic is great. Nice rundown comparison, as a user of both who started out on tape during the early days of MIDI sequencing I'd like to add one observation: To me the main difference is this: While ProTools in its underlying concept is a logical extension of a tape machine and mixing console Logic has its roots in MIDI sequencing (it was originally a sequencer) and the DAW components added later were implemented to augment the sequencer architecture. Editing in Protools is very similar to editing tape with a razorblade, it's linear , intuitive and happens in the edit window, which is just a display of virtualized tape. All of ProTools MIDI capabilities came later to augment the DAW. When I started in Logic, trying to use my regular workflow from years of being a ProTools user, I had my first perfectly edited timeline of songs across a set number of tracks, ready to mix, so i wanted to set a delay value. Its default value was tied to the tempo of the song ( i had multiple songs in my timeline and honestly didn't ever pay attention to any of that since I was recording without click), I could do 1/4 notes, half notes, dotted 8th, whatever but all tied to the BPM setting. In order to change the delay time I though it'd be smart to adjust the tempo after the fact and take a listen, BIG MISTAKE, all my edits changed, all my previously written automation changed and I was freaking out. I figured out what the problem was and all is good now but in ProTools , as it is originally conceived, this would have never happened because the time of a delay plug in or any other plugin would never be tied to what's happening to your edit window which was (*and probably still is) just virtualized linear tape. It's just a little example but it underlines the conceptual differences of origin between the two, at least in my mind it does. Keep up the good work.

I work a long time in Protools, it took me a long time to manage it correctly. I discovered Logic Pro when I started composing, I use it to compose only, and let's say I still don't know its workflow for mixing and masternig ... would you recommend learning to mix and mastering in Logic or working with both DAWs, one for each thing?
@shockwavestudios2958
@shockwavestudios2958 3 года назад
The thinks he described for features both the Daws can do. Pro tools has ultra beat that plays straight out of the box just like logic’s drum session, bought are great for comping, both are good for tracking or multitrack recording and both can be used for composing. They literally can do the same thing as each other. Both have great session import tools for session file. The real trick is linking pro tools and logic together for a super Daw hybrid. If I had to name a feature in pro tools that is really bad ass over logic, then it is the ability to load your session to Ram. Why because random access memory is 30 time faster than an ssd which is already fast at reading data. I was astonished when I fast saw that feature and I tried my best to see if I could get latency or drop outs and it was impossible for me. I would like to see that feature in logic and other music application next too.

I started with a 16 track 85-16 Teac/Tascam tape machine, it was long before digital recording and for me, it doesn't matter if it is Pro Tools, Logic, Reaper, or Garage Band, all it is for me is a tape recorder or a device to record music on. I am all about the recording processes and getting things right. Digital editing is fantastic, but my background in editing was tape editing with a grease pencil, a splicing-block and a razor blade, which seems to makes digital editing a breeze. Yup, I'm "old school" and there is nothing wrong with that. Buy either Pro Tools or Logic and learn how recording is done, they both have advantages and disadvantages and you learn how to get around problems. Concentrate on the song, not the equipment! I learned recording first by recording bands and eventually went to a recording school to up my knowledge. The most fun I have is working with great bands with fantastic songs. Don't forget you can transfer tracks / stems/ files from Logic to Pro Tools and back again from Pro Tools to Logic and keep working, nothing is really impossible, you just need to figure out how to do it.

My understanding also is that both Logic and Garageband use AU (audio units) and not the VST format plugins. This is probably one of the factors that will see me continuing to use Reaper as I acclimate to using a Mac, as being able to open a project in both Mac and in Windows is something I may take advantage of when going between my Macbook Pro and Windows PC. I have also been unable to get Garageband to work after trying to install it after installing Reaper on my Mac, always giving the message that 'Garageband quit unexpectedly' every time I try to load it even after multiple re-installs of it, which gives me no confidence Logic Pro X would even work, though I'm not sure if the problem is that one is unable to have both Reaper and Garageband installed or what the problem is, probably leaving little choice but to completely reinstall Mojave; but, apologies for that being a matter beyond the scope of this thread...

The transition from Grarageband into Logic is very simple, much like the transition from iMovie to Final Cut. I get it. But it's just not my cup of tea. I've been a Pro Tools guy since the TDM days. Can't get used to working on any other workflow after 17 years or so working in the PT ecosystem. lol Pro tools just has better routing, flexibility, and more logical editing (No pun intended) for my workflow. That said, if I was a new user, with no experience working in Pro Tools, I'd probably go with logic first just because of the ease of entry, the cool little features, and the lack of track limits (Even though track limits never bother me anymore, I've never gone past 64 audio tracks cuz I do hip hop and R&B)

I’ve never understood the argument that Pro Tools is great because you can do anything and it’s better for engineers. What *specifically* can you do in Pro Tools that you cannot do in Logic? To me the “better for engineers” argument basically boils down to it being more confusing to use. I’ve used both and I VASTLY prefer Logic for everything. It doesn’t get in the way nearly as much and there’s no DRM BS like iLok. Spend $200 once and you’re totally set.

For me it's the Pro Tools edit tool . They call it "smart tool". With just T, R and the smart tool I can do about a million things in Pro Tools. If you need to Slip just click on Slip. If you need to snap to grid, well... It's a master class in minimalism design. Do a lot with very little. The other thing that I've noticed is that Pro Tools handles chopping up audio a little more gracefully. Logic tends to still suffer from pops and clicks on more clips that you've chopped up and haven't introduced fades at the point of cutting. This, in my experience, has resulted in less work (I don't have to put a fade on every clip I've cut). This may not matter to you but it's a big deal to me. If you have a gazillion audio clips this results in real/appreciable time savings. As far as Midi and some of the routing I'd say Logic has the edge although when it comes to interfacing that edge is lost a little bit. On the piano roll Pro Tools once again is just simply better. Double click to add a note and then region trip. I never ever have to swap between different tools (cut, select, etc etc). It's all just T and R and the mouse. Usually single or double clicks. Logic's marque tool is just more clumsy in that more input is requirement from you. Logic will do pretty much everything Pro Tools will do really but how they each do what they do still matters. A couple of tools on the Pro Tools side are just so elegant that at this point noone should try to outdo them. Just flat out copy it. Avid is obviously shit and I'd love to get away from them but no daw has the edit tool like Pro Tools and until that happens I'm kind of stuck. Studio One is actually closest and there is a bunch of shit I like in Logic that I think is better implemented than in Pro Tools but the edit tool keeps me from jumping ship. Hope that helps.

@@Screaming-Trees ur saying if I need to redo a vocal part, and I re record it, it will audibly click after its edited together? Im about to buy a daw and am also confused because I only hear contradicting information and it always seems like more of a personal choice than anything. IS either easier with songs that change tempo? IV thought bout using drummer software and idk how that works if I want to write to the tempo of the guitar. I want to write to a natural flow.

@@heythere6983 Comping takes should work ok, in that sense anyway, on any daw. There are other considerations with comping however (i.e. each daw implements this in its own way). But you're not going to be just comping vocal takes. Pro Tools is a master class in minimalist design that no one has bothered to copy yet; or even learn from for that matter. IT's all about minimum input, from the user, with maximum payoff (output). If you want to do a fade in Logic you have to first select a secondary tool then you have to perform a coordinated hand movement (shift plus mouse click) to use the tool. That coordinated hand movement costs you time and attention and in my view this kind of shit is what kills creativity/productivity in aggregate. You do a thousand of those and you might have lost an extra 2 or 5 or whatever hours. To get back to the point about you not just doing comp takes. Whenever you edit audio you'll be doing things like resizing regions to strip silence (especially if you have microphones running in which case you'll be highlighting silent regions and deleting them) and you might be moving regions around, introducing fades/cross-fades and a few other things. This type of activity is majority of your time. In Logic, and others, this type of thing requires two hands to coordinate for the most part. In Pro Tools the two hands don't need to coordinate. There are not shift + type commands that you need to worry about. You'll be using T and R independently with your left hand to zoom in/out and then your mouse to do the rest (introduce a fade or delete parts of the region etc). Now if you have to edit a hundred tracks just this alone will save you hours. Then there's the audio handling part. On a hundred tracks you'll do a thousand different edit related things (audio regions getting trimmed/chopped/spliced together/fades etc etc). When you do this in Pro Tools you'll need say a hundred fades. On others you'll need three hundred or five hundred because for whatever reason they just don't handle audio as gracefully. When you have to introduce two fold or three fold's worth of fades that's time. Maybe you have that kind of time I don't know. But it's time. And I could never get Logic to be graceful when it comes to this. That plus no coordinated hand movements is what keeps me locked to Pro Tools. Whether the daws sound the same or not well again I think Pro Tools tends to be more graceful here. But you'll have to do your own testing. Setup the two daws and record the same thing across them to see how it sounds. The subjectivity argument about DAWs is valid but there are definitely quantifiable differences (i.e. no coordinated hand movement required; and that's a huge deal). There are some niceties in Logic though. The DAW carries some water for you when it comes to routing setup whereas on Pro Tools you'll need to do that manually. Want to implement a send on a track? Well in Logic as soon as you toggle send on the channel strip it sets up the routing for you. On Pro Tools you'll need to create an Aux track and set the correct input (so bus 1/2 for example if it's a stereo aux). Then on the channel strip you point your send to bus 1/2 and voila it all works. Bit more work than Logic but can setup templates for this kind of thing I guess. Bottom line though if you work in audio mainly Pro Tools is simply unmatched with it comes to both sound and ergonomics. And that's entirely due to minimalist design.

@@Screaming-Trees I really really appreciate the specific quick answer. The great thing about an answer like that is I can specifically research things like I did when you mentioned the clicking when editing. I searched and saw some videos of people editing on pro tools, fading in and crossfading to remove clicks and it seemed simple enough. I have to research their beat detective more though cuz im not quite sure I totally got it, as some people just use it but dont explain. I also saw some logic fading videos to compare. I saw this one, found it pretty neat of a feature, check it out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nLzwbwsXpVE.html He fades a ton of tracks together at the editing point at once. However in one of the protools videos I saw I did see sometimes the fade needs to be slightly adjusted because it will still sound off and when they re position the fade it blended fine. So with fading many tracks on logic I assume you still have to double check and make sure. Although I was surprised that you could fade, have an issue, and just move the fad and all of a sudden it blends perfectly, I wonder if there is ever a time where a cross fade just wont work at all? I also saw logic has a feature where you dont record to a click but rather it establishes tempo to your playing with "smart tempo" and fits other tracks to that tempo, that sounds good. I wonder how well that works with multiple tempos in a song though , if it works by sections. I do tempo changes sometimes and want to use superior drummer or Steven slate drums and have to figure out how I could arrange drums into those kinds of situations. Did you ever find to be true the idea that somehow pro tools tracks sound better than logic? Some people swear the DAWs have their own slight coloration. IDK how much I buy it lol. Thanks for your response again. Im gonna spend tomorrow watching editing videos and get a good gauge of the variants. If there are any other advantages you feel pro tool has let me know, ill keep trying to watch all I can.

@@heythere6983 Yeah no worries. Anytime :). So with fades you won't need one at every cut point. That is what's so great about Pro Tools in that you'll need to worry less, comparatively, about fades because you'll need fewer of them. Batch fades I mean it sounds like a nice feature in theory but you can't leave something like fades to a batch tool (that will operate on a large number of tracks at once). Just like you can't leave silence strip to a tool. Any kind of programmatic interference here has the potential to alter the sound of your mix. I would stay clear of batch fades tools but that's me. With Pro Tools just use the smart tool and hover over the top corner end/start point of a region and fade away (with a mouse). It's more of a broader workflow issue anyway. You should be cleaning up your session as your record not waiting for post. And in that way you would never need a batch tool. Fades are one of those things that need to be taken care of as you're recording. As far as sound in my experience that's a yes. I couldn't get Logic to, on the first playback with no processing at all, to sound as smooth as Pro Tools. You'll have to do your own testing here though. That said with some work you'll probably get them all to a point where you have parity. A mate of mine has studied this very issue at uni and alleges there is a paper available that concludes they all sound different. I could ask him if the paper is available for public consumption if you like? From my own experience playback after record in Pro Tools sounds best to me. However anecdotal. The thing with these qualitative evaluations is it requires a lot of ear training. Most people don't bother with that. To make matters worse they listen on crappy speakers/monitors that are fed with crappy DA converters. Not only can you not sharpen your ears this way you tend to also absorb whatever the consensus of the times happens to be. Developing a critical ear takes a few years and some tools (As well as the right kind of theory/doctrine and experience). One of the best investments I've made was speakers and DA. Not as sexy as instruments and something like a Neumann u47 but it changed my world completely for the better. The biggest advantage Pro Tools has is sheer simplicity due to the minimalist design principles approach. And I don't know how they managed the audio handling to end up with such a smooth result with minimal effort. Less is more. Fewer features is also better ultimately. If you're working Superior Drummer you probably don't need Beat Detective since you'll be working in midi. Unless you route midi to an audio track and commit to audio right away but even then the original track will be in Midi so no need to worry about the Beat Detective.

“You can do anything in ProTools” well that’s a bit of an overstatement. Automation in ProTools sucks! Automation and logic he’s very intuitive straightforward and extremely flexible. ProTools comping abilities are mediocre at best. Logic's Quick-swipe comping is absolutely glorious. They've had it for over a decade now. Signal routing in Logic is a breeze. Why should I have to create AUX tracks like pro tools demands? In Logic I just send a track to a bus and I'm done. An AUX it's automatically created without me having to think about it at all. Oh and I don't have to solo safe anything. It's already done for me through the whole routing chain. The best thing about pro tools is the linear work flow when working with audio. I like that your tool changes as you move over certain parts of the waveform. Also elastic audio probably has an edge vs flex time in terms of quality of the results and fewer artifacts. Flex time is much much easier to work with though. Pro tools is a necessary evil because old cats are stuck working on it in pro studios. New generations of mixers and producers do everything they need in LOGIC, Ableton and Studio One.

I used Logic for a couple years until my old 2014 macbook just became useless. Pro Tools is without a doubt the biggest regret I have in purchasing anything in the last year, hands down. It's so annoying to use, took me literal weeks and several phone calls with an avid rep just to get it to let me log into it, and the interface is endlessly confusing. It leaves me with nothing but regret and frustration every time. To be fair, I have no one teaching me how to use pro tools and I'm mostly figuring it out on my own. It's gotten to the point that I have actually opted to use the garageband app on my iphone 12 rather than pro tools. I'm even considering buying a macbook just so I can use Logic again.

I don't get into this DAW vs DAW nonsense. They are all just tools and will work. Use what is in front of you. Getting the workflow down is the challenge, and that is there regardless of which DAW you use. Use the one that suites you and your personal workflow. I'm a Pro Tools user 18 years or so now. I'm a simple guy with ADHD that just wants something easy on my brain / to focus on. Pro Tools was so easy to learn, Digidesign had my ignorant self making music within 30 minutes of opening the box to my Digi 001 or 2 or whatever it was. That was before RU-vid and quick access to information. They had a great product. They still do... you can score a film with Pro Tools. It's a great DAW. They just seem to not really be in touch with the home studio market much, and instead, focus on the commercial customers. It's fine. IT still works for me and I never have to talk to them anyways. I never bothered with Logic because it isn't cross platform. Cubase and Reaper are the only two I'd like to sit down and really get familiar with. If I were to switch DAW's it would be to one of those.
