Are you looking to work from your home studio full time? What's the best part?
@jonnytherrien8640
@jonnytherrien8640 4 года назад
Absolutely. As a freelancer who mainly plays live, I've been doing a lot of research and recording since all live music was basically cancelled. I am heading down a new path of becoming a media composer to be able to work from home and be in control of the music I am a part of. The best part of full time self-employment is being able to build a career rather than chasing one. That is what came to my mind when you were talking about investing in yourself rather than in another person's/company's endeavors.

Would love too. Just finished building mine from the ground up the "right way" did the air gap, Insulation, MLV, 5/8 inch drywall. Built my own Bass traps Built my own Studio desk and My own sidecars. Have enough mic pres to do drums. Plenty of gear for almost any project. As a DJ/Music producer I mainly work in Keyboards and Inside the box.

For sure, this video is kind of about investing in gear. I’m not necessarily qualified to give career advice to others or tel other people how to live their life. I can only share my experience and talk about things that relate to what I’m doing. Might want to check other channels for career advice. I’m more recording and music productions.

I’m working from a home studio but I wear a lot of hats like most people. I’m a full time college student going to school for composition, also a composer, and I also do work into audio and music production and post production. Im starting up and haven’t had a lot of clients but just yesterday actually I had a client thank me immensely for the work I’ve been doing for them and telling me that they’re going to be regular clients of mine even after they move to a different state. This is my first time working with this client, it’s the first song I’ve ever fully produced myself, and I learned basically everything I know off of RU-vid or just trying things out. I’ve taken some recording and mixing classes at university but it was mostly independent study and working on the free multitracks online and doing recordings for my own projects for school and things like that. Of course I want a bigger live room because I have a piano and old Hammond organ that are being very underutilized and am planning on adding a pump organ down the road, and I’d love to use these instruments for clients as well, but it’s only part of my journey in this musical journey. It’s been great and I love all of this that’s going on

The US Director Of Photography and Movie Director Scott Billups once filmed an entire sci-fi movie with actors such as Faye Dunaway and James Coburn by filming all live scenes in a green screened smaller studio sound stage leaving all post production to be done in the box by standardizing the AV-edit/Daw platforms with his editors and composers so they all were working from the same fistful of DAW sequencers, HD video-editing applications and plugins. This way he could finish production of a full feature film by the aid of collaborators in several countries including Spain, Mexico and England without any of them actually meeting outside of Skype until the opening night,- just by standardizing the platforms. This was in 2002! Concievably you could of course do the same thing with music production,- record the band in a smaller studio, mix it in a different studio and master it in a third,- even as collaborative projects as long as you had in some way standardized the platforms,- you could even imagine the birth of " virtual bands" that only existed in the digital domain and only perform internationally by performing only online like " live podcast" type actual concerts being filmed and edited as they are being performed. The possibillities are endless,- money isn´t even the the obstacle any more,- just a lack of ingenuity and/or imagination. It just might be a new production modality growing out of this 2020 situation,- anything is possible from now on. Fascinating times are at hand.

I'm a drummer and FOH with Yamaha Canada through the french-canadian distributor. I got 2 shows a week beginning friday but of course that's enough and I'm not close to get more live gigs than that. I've worked for a whole decade on my Roland V-drum patches - could probably sell them... - to the point of fooling some studio engineers that my V-drums were actual real acoustic drums. My drum covers were taken down from YT for stupid copyright claims but Imma make a medley so good look to the publishers with that ;) And I also produce my own music.

Any suggestions to help get some clients in...And whats a good mic for vocals around 500 that will do the job? been hearing about this 200 tz stellar any good? also suggestions for vocal booth treatment and good sound

Man, this video caught my eye while multitasking through apps. Scarily and coincidentally I literally ordered my mixer and about to get a keyboard controller, good studio monitors, good vocal mics, etc. I’m utilizing some of my previous equipment that had been getting dusty from back in my band days. Without getting too personal. I’ve been dealing with depression and just felt I have all these “hobbies” and didn’t se me going anywhere. Or just didn’t feel there was a future. But,... anyways... your video made me feel like I might be on the right track. I want to do some voice overs, beats, my own songs, and just whatever. I just want to go back to the only thing that I loved doing. Making music. I just want to be able to have something I can pass to my daughter when I my song ends. Who am I kidding right? Lol. Probably won’t read this. But thanks for making this video. Take care.

Hey thanks for the video. It showed up as "recommended for me" and was very timely. I'm planning a full addition on our house for my home studio. It's going to be over $100K (Canadian) and I've gone back and forth with doubts about the financial cost being worth investing in the dream. I've struggled with the cost of the time spent to design and build the space getting in the way of working on tunes now. I've tried to balance that somewhat, but what I thought was a one year dream has turned into several. The plans are done, the building permit submitted, I may have a builder, and with any luck will be done by next summer. I've already done what you have in terms of thinking though every aspect of gear and production to choose the right gear and make sure my processes are streamlined. I also have an Apollo x8p and a Twin x, I've gone with Amphion monitors and have chosen the list of hardware synths, patch bays, extra mic pres, etc. for the final install. I also designed and built my own custom studio desk to fit my equipment and workflow (I figured that if I had the desk, I would have some more info for studio design). I couldn't agree more with all your comments about thinking things through, choosing the right gear, and making your space great for clients. I'm a bass and keyboard player, compose and write songs using traditional and MIDI instruments. I'm expecting to work with great local (and possibly remote) talent, and to use my studio for music education (specifically recording/mixing). The Universal Audio stuff is great, but as a Windows user, LUNA will be a long ways off for me. It also doesn't seem to be set up for MIDI based production. My recommendation is Presonus Studio One. Version 5 has made MIDI hardware synth integration fantastic. When I got back into recording in 2007, I already saw that Pro Tools was a dinosaur of a product. I've been happy choosing alternatives that are far superior and often less costly. Anyway, I've subscribed now so I'll keep tabs on what you are up to.

100k Canadian is too much ONLY if it's a risk and you're expecting the investment back. My whole setup is a little over 3rd of that amount which I built myself with cheap labor and it's handling radio quality productions earning a few grand every month. If you're expecting the investment back, I'd say, go small and expand based on NEEDS, not WANTS.

I’ve had my home studio up and running for almost 4 years now. I graduated from the Blackbird Academy in Nashville and then I moved back to Texas to setup shop. So many musicians in Texas think they have to go to Nashville to make great sounding records. I setup to try to combat that. I’ve had more than half a dozen top 30 songs on Texas radio. Commercial studios are amazing and I think they still have their place in their industry. Big giant live rooms where everyone can track at once is where they live. In my studio I track the bones of a song live, but don’t quite have the room yet to do full live projects, but that’s the goal. Thanks for the video!

Since the pandemic and losing all my live gig work I've managed to get 1 client for arranging work, but my home "studio" isn't making it very easy. Unfortunately I wont have a permanent space I can actually improve for another year, so I'll have to keep setting up and tearing down my equipment before and after every session. Your videos have been very helpful and inspiring, perhaps one day I can have a space that sounds and feels great. That being said, it really is a blessing to be able to record without having to pay someone and travel to their studio

Hello Andrew, I've a small setup at home. Considering how important it has become to have a well treated room and a studio at home, I've a concrete structure which I'd like to convert into a great studio. I need help with the layout, what kind of material to use for treatment, and maybe some gears that I should invest on. Thanks

Singer-songwriter here with a background in audio production. So, yes...I am working from home and currently in a makeshift studio setup. I'm looking to upgrade it a bit by way of getting a desk that'll better suite what I'm currently using...a laptop, external monitor for said laptop (dual screen in the end), outboard EQ, and an audio interface (for now, since I record all of my own work, a two input interface to be exact).

Just started to develop my home studio in Guildford UK as we have been locked down on and off for a year. I use to perform six days a week in London but thats all gone. So i always had a desire to have my own studio. I got myself a pair of Genelec 8020D speakers and a Apollo twin X. I use it with a Mac mini and 27” monitor.My mic is a Aston Spirit with the Halo. It’s a huge learning curve. Just added EZdrummer for drums. So i need all the help possible 🤣 Live my vocals are fine, however recorded i have no idea why it sounds so bad 🤣will keep you posted

i agree with this view. saying that, and for new music enthusiasts i would advice to avoid buying things they wont really need. I invested in an Apollo Duo few years ago (this thing is a killer), with a expansive Audio Technica 4050 (super sensitive) mic as i wanted to record some acoustic guitar and voice tunes à la Aaron Lewis ... the sound off course excellent, even if i beleive i used only 10% of the Apollo software capabilities as i dont understand a single thing in recording stuff , i was just pushing buttons randomly .. then i discovered that the mic was that sensitive that you guys can hear my neighbour downstairs talking on the phone with her ex husband (and i wonder if the mic didnt even capture the voice of the ex husband in the phone) ... this was simply not the material i need in my phonic untreated office (too much echo) ... i then decided to sell my mic, try to sell my apollo and go with a simple USB mic and plug and play yamaha THR for my electric guitars. That will be enough for my worktapes and send that to professional studios and musicians to help me record my music professionally.

I’m a lifelong musician, professional drummer, and wannabe producer when I grow up. I’ve taken this lockdown time to invest heavily into my studio. Just upgraded my 13 year old KRK 5’s to the Adam A7X’s with the sub MK10. I am blown away and could not be happier! Also just picked up a Stealth... my first semi-serious mic. It’s just money right?

Yes, I'm going against the "do the right thing" mind setting; I'm started to invest even more in my studio during the first lockdown. With one of my band we didn't want to waste time, complaining about the pandemic situation, so we decided to record a new album, all doing it remotely. Well, I've updated my machines in my little home drum studio, recorded and released the album and fans, magazines, reviewers seem to appreciate the current production more than the last one which it has been done in a top class studio in Stockholm, funny huh? Yes I have a little less money in my pocket, but since then more sessions works start to come because my overall quality has improved a lot. During the last two months I've done another investment (bought some new mics, new monitors and a brand new Apollo firewire interface, which it's a game changer) and I'm about to make new soundproofing works. It's our job, we decide the quality of it.

Couldn’t agree more, just upgraded from a focusrite Clarett 8 pre to the Apollo xp8, will use the the clarett as my adat expansion with a Apollo twin for monitor control and extra dsp, unison pre etc... with Luna and unison pre’s I don’t think there’s a better solution on the market for small project studios like mine :) thanks for the video’s they helped me pull the trigger on the upgrade

Great vid man. Im from Boston, MA nationality Dominican. I’m a singer, songwriter musician, and produce my own music. Been doing so for more than 10 years. I’ve had a semi- home studio at the moment but eventually want to build my own recording studio right in my own home perhaps the baseman or a shed outside convert it into a studio or something mobile etc. I want to be able to work with no interruptions, noise or simple family coming in the room making noise. I’m in serious need of a studio and been thinking of how to start. I’ve been in bands projects where we build studio before. I’m kind of familiar with the process even how to record drums, guitars plus using daw like Logic Pro x or Studio One is now my daw of preference. I wanna be able to work: record, and do my social media content plus produce other artists right from my baseman. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! 👍🏻🙏🏻🎸

How are you routing that XLR snake for your drum kit through the x8p? Just going into the xlr inputs? I want to upgrade to the x8p and use it to mic my kit, run a mixer through, some turntables, multiple sets of monitors, etc. Trying to figure out the most efficient way to do so without having to go behind the interface constantly to swap out cables. Thanks

I am building out a home studio in my TuffShed (~9.5'x~11.5' interior floor space). It's going to double as a RU-vid studio. I want to begin an interview show for RU-vid from my studio space. I also teach a brand new class at my high school, Studio Recording, AND I'm taking Studio Music Production from my local college. I have two years left 'til I can retire from teaching. I want my studio engineer skills to be sufficient to provide an "encore career" in my retirement years.

I started investing in this whole thing as just a hobby... everything in the beginning was computer based as I wasn't looking at the bigger picture. Not entirely sure what path I want to head down at the moment but I'm around 6 grand into this hobby and there isn't an end in sight. Do you ever see your studio complete? That's my question as an addict to all things electronic.

I know it's easy to want more and more stuff, but I take this thought into consideration, How many Compressors or EQ's heck even mics do you REALLY need to get to job done, be creative on say mic placement and getting the tone and levels pretty close into the DAW and it makes everything else a breeze and saves you space time and money what not to like about that.
@mts2639
@mts2639 4 года назад
Don't look at it as an end goal, rather think of it as a process. You will always change and expand your setup. Tech is expanding too fast, and one's ideal studio today will not be the same in 5 years, or rather in 2 years time. Just enjoy the process of experimenting. Your end goal should be to earn more than you spend.

from 2011-2016 I was working at commercial studios. The work went from recording and mixing 20 songs a month to JUST mixing those 20 songs...then it went from just mixing those 20 songs down to about 10...then 3-4 a month...then I was let go. Shortly after that I invested in a home studio. I now have a home studio for music and a podcast studio. INVEST IN YOURSELF. Taking that first plunge is the scariest, yet the most exhilarating. Hope it works out for everyone who has decided to start one up.

I am in the process of cleaning out my garage to finish over into a rehearsal space/recording studio. I always thought "Well I need someplace to put the cars during a snowstorm" but lately I realize that's only about 5-6 times a year, and the rest of that time the space is wasted. I've been in my house for 23 years and really wish I had done this decades ago. My goal is mostly for my own uses, but I have thought about eventually reaching out to find clients and run it as a side business.

Hey , I have the x4 as well! To be honest? I bought it because, yes, it's a great audio interface, but so is Focusrite (well, to ME it is lol). ButNO ONE has suc a damn good-looking desktop interface that couples as a damn-good looking monitor controller!!! I HAVE NO IDEA WHY their competitors don't focus on creating a cool-looking desktop interface that also works as a monitor controller!!! So.... that's how I ended up with the x4. Plus.... two very close friends (Josh Wilbur & Tony Maserati) who both use to be my engineer told me to buy any UA apollo brand. And to everyone in the comments....nope they didn't send me the apollo x4 for free Lol. LOVE your enthusiasm for product you believe in bro!! I support & salute you.
