Self tapping screws are a great idea but if you'd like a little extra pressure in those locations without too much trouble then I'd suggest trying rivets instead. They go in easy and can be drilled back out without too much trouble. The clamping force of a rivet opposed to a sheet metal screw is much higher so it'd work better for your welding process. I don't look forward to doing mini-tubs in my project either as it does look like a pain. Cleco fasteners are a good alternative too but their clamping force is less than that of the sheet metal screw. The benefit to those is they are, by far, the fastest and easiest way to clamp two panels together. Either way, your project is coming along great. Really enjoy your videos bud.
This mod is a TON of work. I did same thing on my 70. And I agree, DSE cuts out alot of the tough spots. You really need to understand the amount of work here but its totally worth it once done.

I have a 1971 camaro. At this time i have wheels that are 15x10 with 295/65 r15 on the rear. Stock wheel wells. I have great traction with them and i have a 632 bbc with 3 stages of nos. I get mini tubing is for a look.
That’s impressive that you can get 295s in the stock wheel wells. If I used a spacer and rolled the lips I could see how you might make it fit. Mine didn’t rub unless I went around a corner at speed.
Isn't that quite the deal putting those in? I had a heck of a time putting them in my 70. My struggle was with how thin the metal was that the flange was welded to. So I decided to weld in a second layer of 18 gauge along the length of the trunk and under the floor edge going forward. While it doesn't look stock in the trunk it has more strength and I didn't care about the look. it will be a driver.
These are the 2nd gen DSE mini-tubs. No need to narrow the frame on the 2nd gen and you only need the spring shackles if you plan to keep the leaf springs. In my case I went with a torque arm so no relo shackles necessary.
