+1 to this. Gifted player and educator for sure. Affable and articulate. I am always drawn to folks who clearly give a s about doing a thorough job, and he's definitely in the club. A thoroughly ridiculous self-deprecating sense of humor helps as well.

Zane, great weekend in Austin...beating the top seeds and making it to finals shows you can compete with the big boys...now to take the next step and win it all...the competition is closing up and the results are going to change a lot more than Ben and Anna Leigh winning every single week in all brackets

For those of us with weak wrists The tomahawk is easier if one can bend down and have space to hit the angle inside the line

Tomahawk : You get better reach using you left hand (via two handed backhand). Also anytime you use your wrist to hit a shot, your paddle is only in the optimal (flat) position for a split second. This takes an incredible amount of timing which is never better than not using your wrist...

I’m a big fan of it too. I find that it’s biggest value is I can put away balls with a lot less movement, helping me to hold the center of the court without creating a gap between my partner and I for my opponents to exploit.

Most coaches in most pro sports weren’t pro or even at the collegiate level at the sport they coach…it’s about motivation perception and being able to get the player your coaching to accept the coaching so I would include trust
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 5 месяцев назад
Trust is important… The greatest level coaches who coach professionals have played at least at a pretty competitive level. Although Team sports are a little bit different. I compare pickleball to sports like tennis and golf. The best golf coaches and tennis coaches were pretty good players in their time. Maybe not the best, but were great players

The tomahawk is essentially a 1 handed backhand drive. Theres always gonna be less people using it because of the difficulty to master. In tennis its always been that way but its called the most beautiful shot in tennis for a reason. Most people will be fine using the easier 2 handed backhand in most cases Im sure eventually well see it more in singles matches. But People arent switching their grips as often in pickle vs tennis however so i imagine it see very doubles play
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 5 месяцев назад
The one handed backhand groundstroke and the tomahawk are not the same, not even close. Also, the 2 handed backhand is a more efficient and consistent shot, that is why it’s used. Just like tennis.

Man, Zane glad to hear you guys are going to start having kids. I can confirm that they’re great. My best advice: total resignation-any minute you have to yourself is an unexpected bonus. Two versus three: two, close together. The dynamic totally changes when the kids outnumber the parents. Finally, if you want your daughters to have the same rights as your sons… get out of Texas.

Very insightful content particularly on the coaching and how the game is changing. One comment or thought I have had and have seen Zane and some others talk about it right side/left side specialists and how righty/lefty combo teams start to become more common. Jack Munro is also an interesting player with a unique ambidextrous skillset which I could also see causing some disruption for opponents. What are your thoughts on those things and how we could see more that type of stuff in the future at the highest levels?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 5 месяцев назад
We’ll see it a bunch more at high levels! Righty and lefty court specialists is a necessity at pro levels.

Trend: More people serving further back from the baseline. And yes, Taller players take longer to reach at the wings at the ground. They have further to move their arms.

Is dinking dead? This seems to be a major change in playing styles that I'm seeing at the rec levels and at the pro levels. It seems like more and more players are learning how to attack from low balls (ankles to knees). This seems like it goes along with the body bagging and topspin theme that was mentioned. You don't dink, you try for the body bag and if they get out of the way, hopefully it has enough topspin to drop.

Pickleball as in life you can't have it all, if you hit only topspin returns the ball will travel to your opponent faster giving you less time to get to the kitchen. Plus your return will have a higher bounce and your opponent will have a higher impact point. If you slice your return it will travel to your opponent slower , giving you more time to get to the kitchen. Plus your opponent will have a lower impact point. So the question is do you want to have better court position and face a little more spin or face a little less spin from maybe a less advanced court position. By the way the scorpion or tomahawk are badminton shots nothing new there I afraid.

one thing about coaches is...some of the best coaches throughout sports history have never played the game BUT they know what it looks like to be played properly....tommy Lasorda in baseball, Scotty Bowman in hockey, Jim Boeheim in basketball never made it very far in pro sports but made some of the best players in their respective games...Pete Rose and Ted Williams were great baseball players but horrible coaches because they EXPECTED their players to be as good as them as opposed to maximizing their potential
