Kubota BX or small diesel tractor running rough, stalling or losing power. Maybe it won't start or won't stay running. If your tractor has black smoke and loss of power here's the solution.
Applies to the Kubota BX series tractor. Would also be a good think to consider on any diesel engine having starting or power loss problems.

Great tip about the additive. I'll pick some up, today. BX23S, 200 hrs and 3 yrs old. Pristine, looks new. Stalled backing out of ditch. On the 2019, TWO of those inline filters are installed. One is easy and obvious, in the engine compartment. You show how to find the one prior to the pump, the filter newer model owners might miss. Super job!

Thanks for the tip on the additives. I did end up using them but I also replaced the fuel filters and problem solved (the first filter looked dirty and possibly had water in it). The fuel filter under the tractor was a pain in the butt to get to and replace. Took 2 hours after removing everything. A few months later I ended up removing that first filter, re-routing my fuel lines and adding a RACOR 120A(S) water separator fuel filter. Runs much smother now and will only take 5 minutes to replace the filter and/or drain the water. I also use the additives now all the time. Thanks.

No, the FIRST thing you do is not add stuff to your fuel. That's preventive, not resolution. That stuff won't fix a clogged filter, for instance. First find the problem, second fix it, third work on prevention of it reoccurring.

my dad has a Zero turn from around 2007. Was losing power at speed under load, after warming up. We replaced air and fuel filters, and ensured there was no physical blockage in the fuel line. Then found the fuel pump wire was broken. Put on a new fuel pump. Still had an issue! Then, I noted that there was air in the fuel line above the filter -- the filter did not fill up all the way even when running. I popped the line off and we turned on the key to fill up that upper filter more, then quickly reconnected the line. It has been great since.

Heck yeah man, I have a 2019 Branson 35HP tractor and it has the loss of power issues. Just started after the Heavy snow that China dropped on Texas LOL, Man good tip brother..

I run a BX2380 with 300 hrs. Had the sputtering / loss of power issue while mowing. I replaced both fuel filters and the air filter. Still running the same way with power loss / sputtering. I'm going to try the fuel additive next. I hope it works. BTW, I had a terrible time replacing the fuel filter closest to the fuel pump. Total PIA that took me 2 hrs to complete.

If you're still having issues check for debris in the fuel tank. Sometimes it will block the outlet partially. Causing a lack of fuel situation.

Yeah im gonna get a good fuel water seperater/ filter , those two inline fuel filters are trash , just gotta decide where to mount it and which one to get , same with the way the steering cylinder hooks to front of frame , engineers were confused on that monday design , i gotta redo both of them soon

Worth noting to people that there are TWO diesel filters on these BX tractors, the one below shown in this video near the pump, and another one at the left side of the engine block, behind the cowl. Either one could be to blame for the sputtering. If the problem occurs more than every 100 hrs, it could be crap in your tank, bad diesel, or rust off a corroding metal tank meter float.

love kubotas they make there nice products easy to fix and service i had to to that on a john deere and newholland and it was a night meirror burried under neith all the stuff wich kubota is smart have it easyer to get at

My BX23 has two filters. Also has one on the left side under air breather up next to firewall.

Just had the same problem. Changed both filters, always run kleen-flo diesel conditioner with gas line antifreeze. Was hard to start at 4 degrees this morning. Pulled line off at tank side of filter...next to no flow. Blew line back to tank with compressed air now lots of flow. Will pull tank and flush in the spring. But running great now.

You said to cut the lines to the fuel filter under the tractor. How do I get the 2 lines to fit back together, the fuel filter has two small hoses and 4 clamps. Sorry 😣 but I’m 62 years old and lost my husband a fews years ago so I have been trying to fix things myself I can’t pay someone to fix it so I have fixed a lot of things on it 🤣😂 what a job 😅 🥵 Thank you 😊 for your videos very helpful

Good luck with your project. Don't cut the lines . Clamp them to minimize fuel leakage when changing the filters.

There is 2 filters, one is the one you showed and the other is up by the injector pump by the engine. You use the same filter for both locations.

This video was very very helpful. I had the loss of power issue and changed my filter and the issue went away for little then came back. So I used the treatment you showed and it didnt act up at all.....im wondering if that stuff solved my problem...

i just got it back for having the tank cleaned out...they said there was water and dirt at the bottom of the tank. no dout in my mind that thats my issue lol

It has two. I have changed my fuel pump, both filters, lines and tank and mine still will do this only when I mow with the deck. It mows for about thirty to forty five minutes then loses rpm. i cut it off and wait ten minutes and good to go. I also changed my cap because I thought it wasn't venting right. Nothing works. i called kubota and nothing. I took it in and paid 600.00 for them to change all the same stuff I had changed two months ago and they told me it was fixed. Got home mowed the yard for half hour and same thing.

You are most welcome. I too had the same issue with my first Bx2200 ..which is why I spotted the problem so quick. I do all my own work and trouble shoot my own issues with all my Kubota's, which I am happy to say are few and far between. HAPPY MOWING!!

@Eddleman Stump Grinding Those injector pumps are dang near bullet proof but the weak point is the electronic fuel shut off that plugs into it. They have three modes of operation or lack of in some cases....1) they work...2) they quit and you can't get it started back without replacing it or 3) they start getting weak and won't open fully making for hard starts or they close after they get hot and reopen after they cool. On my 2660 I was cutting and blew a fuse and found that I couldn't shut it down with the key. Afterwards it wouldn't restart. The fuse was a tough one to find because it wasn't easy to see on first inspection. I keep spare fuses now and have always kept a spare shut off Noid since my first BX2200. Still rolling with the original on the 2660. Keep me posted.

@@keithdaniels5918 Mine's doing the same thing and I suspected the shutoff as well, runs perfect for a half hour then starts to bog down. In the Land Cruiser world they call it an edic motor shuttoff and they go bad on those too, gonna try and bypass maybe while waiting for a new one

Problem solved. My L3301 was stalling under load. I had just refueled so I new it was a fuel related problem. Pumped all the diesel out of the tank and got fresh diesel at a truck stop. Refilled and let it idle for about 30 to 40 minutes and the problem was solved. I had purchased the original diesel at a regular gas station. No more. Get your diesel at a truck stop where they are getting daily deliveries of fresh fuel.

Yes, where you get fuel can make a big difference. Keep in mind that once your filter had been contaminated with water or whatever, you'll need to switch it out. Otherwise you're very prone to a repeat problem. Good luck 🤞

I did that to the hydro filter , i cement block bused the filter , all the hydro fluid leaked out

Probably safety switch.. check the seat switch.

Thanks I just checked the drive line and it’s tight , so my problem is there is a popping sound when backing up the hill .( it is very steep) I was hoping it was the drive line , it sounds like the mower deck is sliding to one side but it isn’t. Any thoughts? It don’t do it going down front wards or backwards. Not at all on level ground .

No I don't, but its pretty straight forward. Remove the cover ( one bolt) then there are two slide out pins with cotters and washers holding them. It just slides off the splined front drive shaft.

YOUNG MAN , NEED TO DRAIN FUEL TANK AND CHANGE FUEL FILTER , THEN LUCAS FUEL ADD . OR MARVEL MYSTERY OIL / THEN PUT IN QUART OF 70 % ALCOHOL DRY UP WATER IN FUEL TANK !
