Overtaking near a demarcation line can have some odd problems. COLREGS Rule 34 is a complicated mistress when you are comparing Inland (USA) vs International rules.
I've never been able to solve this problem. If you know a pilot who can answer this one for me, I'd be overjoyed to scrape this barnacle off my brain. Reach out!!!

^^^That's the book of rules according to the United States Coast Guard including the international COLREGS
Yes, I will make dollars off of the above link... I think.

I'm currently learning for my license to operate pleasure crafts under 25 meters for the Netherlands. Trust me it gets weird here, different rules for different areas, lakes, rivers and canals. I know how to operate a boat, just the stupid regulations are very hard to get.

That makes me feel better about how often I have to double check rules in sailing grounds I've been in before. So many rules!

Hopefully a rare case, and avoided by good communication. Farwell's suggests that for US Courts, it would be reasonable to use signals appropriate to the water in which the passing would take place. (ref: The Knoxville City 112 F.2d 223 (9th Cir. 1940)).

Can you actually hear a horn from a vessel behind you in a large ship like a container ship?
@CaptainBoomies
@CaptainBoomies Год назад
Yes, and hearing 5 short from the bridge of one of those big boys is still a very pointy adrenaline spike... the actual bridge crew didn't seem to get as stressed as I was. (I was just aboard to help with some customs paperwork and coordinate TWIC escorts for crew).

@@CaptainBoomies wow that is wild it would have scared the crap out of me too. I thought my air horns were loud but you wouldn’t hear them that far away
@CaptainBoomies
@CaptainBoomies Год назад
@@Godofthemoon1 there are actually rules for how many decibels and what tone your ship horn must be based on vessel size in the COLREGS

I am not a pilot, but I act as a pilot, you can look that up also. This never happens in the US all foreign ships by law have to take a pilot in pilotage waters. We would never rely solely on whistle signals, we make all arrangements via VHF radio, well in advance. In 36 years on and off of being a mariner I have never once used the narrow channel signal. The main thing to remember when discussing inland vs international is that International rules means you are taking that action ie turning to starboard whereas inland rules it means intent, I intend to leave you on my starboard side, the other guy has to agree with it either with signals or VHF.

Rules..... Rules..... Where we are sailing, there are no rules...... I think that's a movie quote...... Oh wait, it's Roads.... Where were are Sailing, there are no Roads.... Which is a good thing.... If there are roads, we are doing it wrong........
