problem with new ply gem window

I like these windows alot but normally windows come in working condition and i found that a couple of these window the manufacture skipped a final step that you may have to do yourself

Those clips are to remove that part of the window from the frame. My particular window had the clips higher up near the top. For my window, you remove the window from the frame, then put in the assisting opening springs and then you put the window back on. Took a while but finally figured it out.

FYI. I've ordered ten ply gem replacement vinyl windows through both big box hardware stores and had nothing but problems with them. Several were made without releases for swinging the windows out, one had serious warping, several had silicone on the window from manufacturing apparently . . . I would NOT recommend the company! Terribly frustrating and NOT CHEAP either. Around $235/window for replacement vinyl, single hung!

Wait until those take -out clips become brittle and break with age when you need to take your sash out for cleaning. They are impossible to find and you cannot substitute the industry standard metal clips in their place. I just went through this pain on 10 year old Ply Gem windows on the Oregon coast. I managed to have a pair of windows under a porch that received no sunlight and the clips had not deteriorated. I just moved those from window to window to remove/clean/reinstall 16 other windows. Best advice if you have a new window installation is to take out a pair and store them somewhere away from the sun until you need them years down the road. Yes, it leaves an ugly slot visible. I would not buy Ply Gem because of this engineering deficiency alone. Grr.

I made my biggest mistake by depending on Home Depot on windows. They got the color right but ordered the wrong size, wrong style, wrong material and one window wasn't even square.

Those clips are there to disengage the balance so you can remove the lower sash and or balance for replacement purposes. Probably nothing to do with the manufacturer, someone could have been messing with then not knowing what they are for. If you ever need to removed the sash, pop those clips out and lift up on the sash and take it out.

Yes. Thanks for this comment. I had a newly installed, single-hung PlyGem window. There's a balancer spring "cartridge" on each side. One of mine wasn't locked in and it was popped up above the sash. Your comment gave me the clues I needed to pop out those little tabs (which catch the balancers and disengage them from the moving sash) and slide the sash all the way up. With the balancers caught, the weight of the sash is now in your hands. Then I could feel it was free to move sideways and easily pull it clear of the frame, allowing the removal of the sash completely. At that point, you can remove the balancers from the frame, if you wish or need to. I didn't need to. All I needed to do was place the sash back into the top of the frame and carefully lower it down, holding it centered in the frame. It picked up the balancers into their retainer clips on the sash and I lowered the sash all the way down. Then pushed in the aforementioned little clips back flush into the frame and all was well.

Plygem windows are garbage. I had 4 installed and all 4 failed immediately. Their idea of a warranty is sending me the parts and saying I'm responsible for fixing it.

Wow. Bought 3. Two of the 3 tracks fell out completely. Put them in small barn. I would be hot if these were in my home to be built. No more Ply-Gem

I worked there for 15yrs and it depends on where and who you work for whether they are any good or not. We were always made to make them as if they were going in our own house, but vinyl. You might as well forget it! They have sent junk out of there!

My window contractor told me these are a big scam, leaky, faulty, and that there's a class action against them at this point. You guys might want to look it up to get some retribution as well. But from what I saw that was almost 10 years ago

So he’s saying because they had a bad batch 10 years ago they’re a scam? I install roofs for a living, one percent of the shingles most manufactures make are recalls, it’s part of the business.

Trying to change out top sash of plygem window and it will not come out. Do installers caulk them in. Tapped around outside with rubber hammer and it did not budge. Any answers, thanks Steve
