Problematic Roller Coasters - Steel Vengeance - Cedar Point's Beautiful Headache

Steel Vengeance will most likely go down in history as one of the most unreal roller coasters ever built. When Cedar Point made the decision to transform Mean Streak, the park gave Rocky Mountain Construction all the money in the world and told them to "go wild." And the park certainly got the unimaginable coaster they hoped for, along with quite the headache of a roller coaster to maintain and operate.
If you'd like to learn more about Rocky Mountain Construction, my friends over @Coaster Studios made an excellent documentary about the company! Check it out! vimeo.com/ondemand/thisishoww...

I love watching the superstructure bend and flex as it goes by. You can tell that RMC really pushed the supports to its limit, for better and worse. If I weren't an engineer myself it would probably freak me out.

Left me genuinely speechless when I rode it. An absolute masterclass in rollercoaster design. So much variety and intensity and not a single lull in pacing. Just as it begins to lose momentum they keep the pace hammering by sending you blasting through the superstructure, rolling and whipping the whole time. I didn't check the time when I started watching, because the subject matter was of such interest to me that time didn't matter. So, thanks for giving me all this information on my favorite coaster, even though I haven't ridden it yet, when I eventually do get my ride on it, I'm sure it will fulfill all that I've imagined it to be.

As an ex employee that use to operate this ride, our dispatch times were 40 seconds. It’s extremely difficult especially when guests are not paying attention. We only say “do not pull down the orange lap bar” about eight times every cycle. Another flaw with the ride that nobody knows except for the operators is the transfer table. Steel Vengeance uses the same transfer table that mean streak used. The pins on either side of the track fail to lock on a daily basis causing downtime when we have to transfer off/on a train. Interesting fact, all 3 trains are different even past the colors and names. Chess (the gold train) has 2 steel balls under the dome while the other 2 trains have the rods connecting it. Just something to notice on your next visit. Notice I said ex employee. If a phone makes it to the platform, it is a fireable offense. Metal detection isn’t always 100% accurate especially when the wands we use are sometimes defective. As a first year operator, this was not mentioned in the training. There are 11 signs outside and in the queue saying “no loose articles allowed. Please place EVERYTHING into a FREE locker in line. The entrance employee repeats no bags in line over and over again but people still fail to listen. It’s frustrating. As a PSA, please just follow the directions. It makes our job and operations faster meaning shorter lines and happy employees.

The valleying crap was an absolute nightmare leading up to media day 2018. We valleyed 4 times when we were there and then it happened at least once more when IOE was cycling it overnight. Also the crash was entirely the fault of the company that built the original mag brakes which was not RMC, I wont say more than that. Said company went bankrupt (or at least that's what the RMC folks on site gossiped to us). Also I'm glad you mentioned trains getting stuck in the brake run in the rain because now that I dont work there I will gladly admit that I went out there to push trains myself LOL As for the trims in addition to the structure there's also a target speed that it tries to get trains to hit the final brake run. I think it's about 37mph but I might be wrong, it was years ago

This video informed me that the first time I ever rode the Mean Streak was actually in it's last year of operation, 2016. I'm typically fearful of larger roller coasters but this one was so fun for my friends and I that I waited in line to ride it twice. A coaster that made me like more impressive coasters. It's kind of crazy to hear about how many changes it's had over the years that have made it better/worse, but it also really satisfies me that even when it was on its last legs it was still a really memorable and fun coaster. Now I gotta go back to ride Steel Vengeance

That‘s a fun story and it‘s nice to hear that Mean Streak was memorable for you because it was one of your fist larger coasters, because most people familiar with bigger coasters like myself found it to be incredibly boring and pointless towards the end of its life. Great to hear it was not lost on everyone :)

The knowledge, flow, and attention to detail is on another level. Kept my attention the whole time. Well done Ryan. Thank you. My wife and I rode this ride the first summer it came out in 1991. It was awesome. When we were in line we could see the way it moves and shakes. My wife was concered and a carpenter near us heard her (and I quote) said "If it dont shake, it will break." :) On a side note we went back 2 years later to ride it again and it beat the shit out of us. We never rode it again. Good to see they are doing their best to keep it going, because it was fun.

One of your best vids. A true love letter to this problematic monster of a coaster. Even with all the problems it has had over five seasons, it’s still a masterpiece and CP knows that. Ridden this ride over 200 times, through every stage of new brakes, new phone policies, and 1,2,3 train operation. Still think 2018 was one of its best years of operation, as the ride crew was able to do so well to transition as the ride constantly causing so many problems. 2022 is also proving to be an awesome year was phenomenal 3 train ops, and I’m sure it’s only gonna get better!!

Loved the video, these are my favorite videos that you do. Probably because I'm a structural engineer, so I like any good engineering case study, but one's about roller coasters? Perfection! I had no idea SteVe had these issues in its first few years, that really explains why CF has been reluctant to work with them ever since. Hopefully CF and RMC patch things up in the near future.

Rode this twice this past Friday, my first time at cedar point. I passed out 6 times the first time. However that’s why I love rides like this, the intensity, the adrenaline. I went on it again without passing Out but still in shock! I was scared at first of these rides but as I began with Gatekeeper which is one of the smoothest rides there imo, I realized how much I enjoyed these rides no matter the height. I would say Steel Vengeance, Millennium Force, Maverick are the top 3, gatekeeper is awesome for those wanting to work their way up to the bigger rides because that’s my tip. Start out with the smaller rides. The worst part of the rides and the best is the beginning of them, the drop but if you can keep your eyes open at the drop you’re good for the whole thing. It’s fun.

Rode this for the first time during closing week at CP this year. The attendant let us go back in line after we rode it and exited the first time, even though it was a minute or two past midnight (closing time). After we got through the line again, the ride-ops let us do a re-ride since nobody else was in line after us. My girlfriend and I still talk about how amazing that was (both letting us in line post closing time, and letting us do a re-ride). May have been a small gesture to them, but it was something they really didn't have to do, and it made our first CP experience even more amazing than it already was.

He does explain it it this video and all the other problematic roller coaster videos as well. It is simply a section of track that only one train can occupy at a time and features a way to prevent a train from rolling into the next block zone. A coaster must have at least one more block zone than the number of trains it runs.

@@ElToroRyan for those of you who are unfamiliar, a block zone is a section of ride that only one train my occupy. This is a great video! I watched every second of it (albeit at 2x speed) and thought it was really well thought out, with great detail for roller coaster enthusiasts as well as simplified explanations for those not as familiar. I remember keeping up to date with the news of Steel Vengeance back in 2018 but it was nice to see a revisit of the history from a looking-back perspective. I also worked as a Ride Operator, but at California's Great America from 2017-2019. My favorite rides there were GoldStriker and RailBlazer (on a good day with lines no longer than about 30min). I agree that it's a great experience for anybody who likes rides and wants to learn more or gain a greater appreciation for how they work. I've actually never been to Cedar Point before but it's been on my bucket list for years. I hope I can go there within the next 5 years.
