What do you think about MGK? Let me know in the comments, and leave a like on this video. I'm covering a lot of ground in this one, including MGK & Megan Fox, Travis Barker of Blink-182, Eminem beef, Slipknot Corey Taylor Beef, his career in rap, pop punk, and rock, his live guitar fails, fighting fans live, and his generally fake plastic attitude.

I never understood this argument. Like, it’s pop punk music. Of course there’s gonna be immaturity. That’s the fucking point! Pop punk is *supposed* to have that immature, “never-grow-up” mentality to it. Mark Hoppus and Mike Herrara and Jordan Pundik still write teenage love songs and act like children. What the fuck is so wrong with that?

Isn't it ironic that MGK is out here acting like he's the saviour of punk when he focuses exclusively on aesthetics just for the sake of it? Punk was a reaction against the overproduced empty glam rock of the 70's, as well as the hippie culture. This people were against the meaningless aesthetics. If MGK can't see the difference between aesthetics for marketing and genuine self expression, I'm sorry but he'll never be an actual punk-rocker.

My particular problem with MGK and company is the bad rep that they bring to the whole pop-punk revival movement. I was born in 2004, so I wasn't around for the initial wave of mainstream emo, scene and pop-punk, but I discovered this kind of music as a teenager myself and it was the first time I felt understood, comforted and spoken to, so I decided that I want to pursue music because of that. I started writing songs earlier this year and I learnt how to pour my raw emotion into music in a way that makes me feel fulfilled. I feel like I'm doing things right so far and I'm seriously considering starting a punk band in the future, but I'm afraid of being associated with artists like MGK and dismissed as just another shallow act that profits off of nostalgia. MGK is old enough to have been around for the initial pop-punk craze, so now he is way too old too act like a reckless teenager and just comes off as immature and obnoxious. He doesn't even try to be sincere and genuine and credible, and he takes away the credibility of the whole genre with him.

@Alice Kae Indeed, '04 was the best year for rock music, at least in the 21st century; four of my all-time favourite ride-or-die albums came out that year! I can somewhat relate to your childhood struggle: I wouldn't go so far as to call my home life bad, but it's definitely toxic most of the time and that's one of the factors that pushed me towards embracing more aggressive music; I don't know if this piece of knowledge helps you with anything, but it sure helps me to know that, at least for some people, things do get better. I'm so glad you brought up Three Cheers, since that's the very album that made me realize that I want to become a musician! Before I found those songs, I didn't even know music can make you feel things like those, with such intensity. I listened to the whole album in one sitting and by the end of it I knew that I wanted to make something like that myself. Honestly, it's the first time in my life when it feels like I've found my place in the world and it's one of the very few things that I'm actually confident in myself about. And I understand what you mean when you say music was your salvation. Music is the one thing that I can always rely on to pull me out of a mental breakdown, to comfort me and to give me strength. Music made me feel things I never even knew I could feel and my goal in life is too make others, or at least one other little kid like me out there, feel the same things. It would be amazing if my generation would step in the spotlight in a couple of years and make our voices heard, share our struggles and encourage each other, at least in an artistic sense, and I'm longing to be a part of that, even if now it feels more theoretical. I for one have to wait two more years until I turn eighteen and I'll hopefully immigrate somewhere in the Occident and pursue music there, but I already started writing songs for the band I don't even have yet, cause I'm that impatient. My reply was all over the damn place, I hope I explained myself coherently enough. Your reply really made my day (it's 02:30 am in my country right now, but you get the point) and I just had to write a whole novel back.

It's music.. No one is acting like reckless teenager.People have different personalities that's it. If tomorrow a 50 year old country singer wants to give pop punk a try what's wrong in that? Mgk didn't just switch genres out if the blue he always had a slight taste for it. In fact he probably got into music because of rock bands before entering the rap scene.. I don't understand what bad rep he is bringing anyone.. Yeah he had some issues with other artists but it's not like he started the beef out if the blue.. I don't understand why people have such extreme opinion of the guy. It's one thing to not like his work but the way people shit on him for anything he does or says without even knowing him is really sad

Not too long ago, Punk Rock MBA posted a video about how a lot of pop punk fans are put off by MGK, and pointed out that it’s not necessarily his music (personally I don’t mind a lot of his music). It has to do who he is and who he wants to be. I agree with this. MGK decided not to make rap anymore and started making rock. But he still has that rapper mentality. He’s basically a rapper that makes rock music now. That gets him hate on both sides on the fence and makes him look like a poser because he’s making music that’s in between the two opposing cultures.

I always wondered about this actually, I'm from the UK but I live in the US now; I'm 34 and when I was in secondary school (98-03) I got super into Nirvana, Hole, Babes in Toyland, Kittie, Jack off Jill and other "alternative" bands, as well as UK artists like Portishead, Dubstar, Massive Attack, Alisha's Attic, Tricky etc. and consequently I started dressing influenced by these artists and alternative scenes. At this time it was NOT considered even ok let alone cool and there was a prevalence of knife crime especially in South London where I'm from and it became genuinely dangerous to go out wearing ripped jeans or a band shirt or have dyed hair. There was a big culture of huge (I mean like often 50+) teens hanging out in highstreets, especially outside of macdonalds, and they would attack "freaks" if they saw someone in a band shirt or other fashion we wore then like those little backpacks that are a stuffed animal with a zip compartment or a bunch of wallet chains or striped tights or spikey collars. They would literally physically attack you. The best outcome was to get insults yelled at you and maybe some random things thrown. But there were instances of kids dying from attacks. Even as I got older I would still see this happen and get the odd insults etc. At 17 I was out with my dad and some grown women with kids started yelling at me! And to be clear im not even extreme looking. I have piercings and tattoos and I wear bamboo earrings and ripped jeans and my style is very hybrid but the point is ANYTHING "alt" associated would set people off. But to get to the point of the long story (sorry) I moved to the US in 2011 and NEVER had issues with people yelling insults in the street or trying to attack me. I mean I'm older now sure but my essential style. Now it's even considered "cool" to dress different? Or so it seems? So basically is it a cultural thing or did the US Used to have the same issue I experienced in the UK and it's just different now? Cos in south London 2001, MGK would have got attacked for sure.

@pumpkinpepsi
@pumpkinpepsi 2 года назад
@@eboethrasher you know very well that there is more to my question than that. Things didn't change specifically on June 8th 2011. I'm explaining that I saw this sort of behavior right up until I left the UK, and NEVER in the US (in the 10 states ive visited and 4 ive lived in), which points directly to a cultural difference and NOT just things changing over time, which would have been more gradual and probably not a singular occurrence that the universe decided on as I was on my transatlantic flight.

I’ve never liked him or his music. The only good thing I think he can bring to the table is being one of the more well-known artists who can shed light on an emerging alternative culture that we’re seeing hit the mainstream in the 2020s. I’m not particularly enjoying all of these new wave pop punk artists (especially the tik tok star turned musician ones) that Travis Barker is drumming for but I do think it’s kinda cool to see this ‘revival’ in some ways. Here and there you hear a song that’s actually good, and yeah most of them sound the same and have nothing going for them, but that’s actually the case in a lot of genres. If MGK can make people aware of this scene that’s got some emerging talent in it then that’s okay. His own music has zero substance for me though, I just find it dead boring and annoying.

I really wanted to give this guy a chance because changing genres is ultimately bold and brave. Admittedly, MGK made some bangers with Tickets To My Downfall. I would have gone as far to say his voice and style was probably more suited for a guitar driven sound. What's frustrating to me is that he has to be such an asshole and tear people down. Plus, dissing Slipknot really? They're Nu Metal icons and he's a little boy playing in a whole new game that Travis Barker is holding his hand in. MGK needs to just shut the fuck up and humble himself.

I don't really like his personality and I think he's kind of a douchebag, I still enjoy his music. It might not be the deepest thing ever and out of this new wave of ''rappers turned pop punk/solo pop punk artists'' i actually think he's one of the least talented. That being said, I think for a short dopamine boost and just to jam out I don't think he's that bad at all. His new album has gotten me through some stuff, even if the person behind it might be a shallow jerk. But here is a hill I'll die on, MGK has injected life into the mainstream for rock music that a band like Neck Deep or State Champs never could (no hate to those two bands at all though, they're fantastic)
