I owned an 1998 ML 320 for 11 years. I changed the oil every 3,000 miles and changed the spark plugs and wires twice. Changed the catalic converter once on each side of the vehicle, changed the water pump twice and changed the breaks and rotors 4 times while I owned it. If you take care of your car it will take care of you. I sold it after it reached 300,000 miles for $3,000.00, The only major issue I had with the car was replacing the water pump. Never had any engine or transmission problems. Now I own an 2000 ML 55 AMG and I love it. Mercedes are not the best cars but you need to maintain it and not drive it to the ground without inversting in the maintenance of it.
i agree with Angel except 3000 miles is overkill for eng oil changes.BUT using only MOBIL 1 at 7000 mi oli change intervals will make it go easily over half million miles...MB engines do not tolerate oil abuse as there oil control rings seem to clog quicjly from sludge if oil is left too long even one time..remember modern catalytic converts will mask oil burning smoke as they are online af full temp within 30 secs so alittle blue smoke at startup is a good clue that the inside of the engine is dirty...if u want proof right before oil change dump at least 4 qt of diesel in the crankcase..(providing the engine wasnt 4 qt low to begin with lol)if the oil level too high message doe NOT apear (im talking about m112 or 113 98 and later) after 1 min (max) of running the engine the the level sensor in the pan is STUCK because of sludge and sludge is bad for any engine i leave the gallon of solvent in and drive for 30 min or until i see the level message sayin too much oil... im a master certified MB tech who after over 45 years of fuckin with these cars knows what works and what doesnt... my M104 engine has 530K miles and is doing quite well tyvm... Anybody got any debate id like to hear it
This is true. I think Toyota's are one of the few cars you can run into the ground and they keep going and going. Though maintenance is always best with any car.
Those Mercedes ML320 runs great but you must know how to fix them the first step is watch Scotty Kilmer and Eric The Car guy then buy an OBDII tool. Once you get the knowledge buy sockets and wrenches then try the smaller jobs such as brakes, shocks and control arms. Once these Mercedes are fix there arnt any car that can beat them
Regardless of anything else, change your crank position sensor,15.00 dollar part,E 8 socket, behind driverside head, don't bother unplugging wire,be careful taking screw out. It's worth it.
I am pretty sure that humming or winning noise is the power steering pump. it has a filter in the reservoir which gets clogged up and i dont think you can clean it . replace for about $50 if you look around for a deal and its pretty easy. after install bleed the system by turning wheel all the way left then right
Hello,700 is the miles u have left until your next service.I see your car mileage is showing over 191,000 .here's what you can do to keep in great shape. Change oil,oil filter, engine flush, air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, starter, ignition coil, alternator, belt, thermostat, change your transmission fluid and filter(every 30000 miles),check your fuses, battery, brakes, that will make it last for years.
I know it seems silly to say but check your key. In time, the insides of ML keys become loose and rattly, there's a little micro chip that maybe a little loose where the connectors aren't meeting to start the car. I had that problem with my 2000 ML550, spent alot of time and money trying to diagnose the problem and all along it turn out to be a faulty key. Worth getting that checked, you maybe surprised. Hope it is, good luck bro!
I know what this is: If you check fuse 22 it´s blown. It goes to a lot of important functions but also to a "steering wheel sensor" located on the metal steering rod that goes down through the floor. If you remove the connector to it (the sensor looks like a black ring) and then change the fuse again you can start the car. But the ESP light will show malfunction but you can live with that. Mats from Sweden.
This may be silly, but the initial start difficulty may be a result of older start plugs. Especially if these use copper electrodes on the plug. Replacing the spark plugs is the easiest fix. I had that problem on a 1998 Cadillac El Dorado and my F150 is sounding like it wants new plugs too. It, like the caddy, use to start after what sounds like two cranks. Now my truck takes about 4 cranks. After I replaced the plugs on the caddy, it went back to two cranks.
My 1999 ML320 has 298,700 miles on it and I have a similar issue with the on again, off again starting issue. I had to have my cruise control/headlight control module replaced in the steering column. After that sometimes the ML won't start when the key is turned. All I do is pull the key out and re-insert it and it'll start. Try that. My ML320 regularly gets 22.5 mpg on the highway at 75 mph with the cruise control and 19.5-20.5 mpg in city traffic. I just got back from a business trip to Washington, DC and that's the typical gas mileage I got. The ML still pulls hard up to 127 mph even with almost 300K on the odometer. I do, however service it regularly and only use Liqui-Moly full synthetic 5w-40 oil just like I do in all my vehicles.
I’ve got the same exact car still runnin strong at 300k miles literally still runs amazing have done all the work on it myself. I believe 700 number means you’re 700 miles PAST service time. Also trouble starting in the morning should be a few things #1 fuel pump the signs I’ve had are usually will start for about ten seconds then die or just not start at all. #2 could be a vacuum leak from somewhere. #3 is bad MAF all you gotta do to see if it’s bad is start the car then go unplug it the car is most likely gonna die. Leave it unplugged start it back up and if it runs fine then you need a new MAF. please anyone feel free to correct me I don’t know everything this has just been my experience 🤙
Hi Joey I have an issue with my ML350 it doesn’t want to go faster than 30mph and it sounds like if is on first or second gear everything else is fine. Can you please tell me if you Can think of the reason ?
@@gmpw9273 Where was the problem? If the car didn't shift and only went to one speed, I'm guessing a leaking electrical socket in the transmission. Must always be changed with ATF change. If the car shifted normally, but made a strange sound as if it was going to one speed, then not enough oil in the servo or the alternator - the bearing of anything that drives the V-belt. So many tips from Europe for a vaguely described defect.
you can also check it by removing baterry timnals but make sure your key is out of ignition or you will lose key coding and when you put back the timnals if it starts after that crank sensor
You do know that you're just supposed to turn the key to the start position and then immediately release it? The car will automatically start itself. If you've been holding the key to start it, that's possibly what's wrong, perhaps you've melted something? Read the Handbook before you break anything else, noting the date of this I guess you've already killed this one. Better luck next time ☺
Many things that give you issues can also be software problems, which are updated all the time. I have a 2015 c300 rode ruff .The dealer just updated the software .Runs better then it did the day I took delivery .
be careful jumping it. it's entirely possible to ruin your key. this does happen. if it does you will receive a "start error" and the vehicle will not run. if the battery is old just call MB roadside and they will bring you a battery with free installation.
The hard starting is caused by 3 things cam sensor, crank sensor and air leak in the inlet manifold or the injector seals. It could be one of the 3 or seldomly all 3
@@zonta71 There are more options - alternator, water pump, V-belt pulleys, air conditioning compressor. But the truth is that it is very often the servo. as you wrote correctly. The best course of action is to check the ATF (dexron II) level in the servo. After starting the engine, turn the steering wheel to one side and the other up to the maximum position (full throttle) and listen to see if the whining sound changes and if it can still be turned easily (without stuttering). Turn on the air conditioner and visually look at the air conditioner compressor to see if it has switched on. If the whining sound does not change, remove the V-belt. Restart. If the whining has disappeared, all that remains is to turn it by hand and try the free play everywhere that turns if the V-belt is on (except the main pulley-from the crankshaft). The culprit is one of them.
For hard starts, find someone with Star diagnostics. Star diag has a test for hard starts. Solving it with the trial-and-error system can be very expensive if the defect is discovered only on your last attempt. The starter spray is excellent for basic breakdown of the problem - is it a fuel problem or is it an electrical problem
Fuel Pressure isn't being held is your starting issue. Filter has a check valve built in that holds pressure, isn't functioning correctly causing it to have to build pressure before it will fire... Cycle the key to the on (not start) position three or four times slowly in the morning and see if it fires quickly, if so, bad check valve and lack of fuel pressure.
Anyone know the outcome here? Why post questions with no responses? Seems like alternator. If you have trouble starting, then the alternator is not recharging the battery properly, and which makes sense with the revving noise (alternator noise). To the other posters, What does power steering have to do with that along with the poor start at the beginning?
Hey that sound coming out of your ml320 sounds like the fan clutch its located in bewteen the radiator fan the main fan not the AC fan but the big main radiator fan if you look behind the fan you can see a metal round coil that coil tends to ware out or burn out which make a racing sound or loud blowing sound i had the same problem till I replaced it. VERY EASY TO REPLACE I BOUGHT A WRENCH FROM HARBOR FRIEGHT YOU GONNA NEED A SIZEABLE WRENCH SIZE I SUGGEST YOU BUY THE FAN CLUTCH I BOUGHT MINE FROM EBAY it cost me $50 and when you have the piece take it to harber freight show them the clutch so thry can see what size tool you need.
in my experiance thats the power steering fluid low on fluid which just might be low or might need a pump sometimes they leak when you dont regularly flush it out and put new fluid serpintine belt is recommended for a more quiet start up also spark plugs might be due at 191k and for the service reset type in the year service rest 99 w163 took me a while but i did it also on the 99 model a starter sometimes might go out because of the key type and all forcing over the years regular problems :)
If you connect an O2 sensor to your car it should tell you any problems you might have, im guessing your main problem should be your spark plugs, if a cylinder is not firing correctly aka a misfire.
Ok can start by looking at Scannerdanner if you are trying to fix it start with your 5v ref signal from the AAM then or should have been First check your Grounds because you have some real important ones up under your front seats
Startup problem is the Franck shaft position sensor, about $30, also the humming sound/ distortion is the engine mounts, change sensor!it will stop on u and not start!
only in a benz would you have a 10,000 mile service light got to love mobile 1 my 2000 ml320 did the same thing with the start did new bocsh plugs "12" douple plat. and it didnt help it but fuel pump and fuel filter did. my 2001 e320 was the same thing idk if its that fuel pumps hate me or what but it works now. ........ and the service light reset is the stupieds prosses ever turn key hold butten turn key wailholding the butten and then turn key with in five sec and push butten twice haha yeah
There was such problem. Power steering hoses flew. Are there spots under car? If yes, it is necessary to change hoses and liquid of the power steering.
ive had maybe 5 or 6 ml and well i prefer a ml430 just because it has a faster pickup dont care when it comes to gas i go more for the feel stock but new after market parts so it runs as it did when was new
My Ml 320 2005 lost power on the hills and flat after a long drive ,it also needs a service at 700 to but now this has happened ,come home in limp mode turned it off for a hour ,restarted it fine and drive back to normal got it checked to day has a few things going on ,diesel EDC ,intake channel shutfoff malfuntion, glow plugs 2 of them need replacing ,,so im over it now ganna get it fixed then in going to try and trade it in on a Toyota or something .
All right here's the thing... You need to take the car to a shop, not necessarily a dealership they are overpriced and usually have morons running around soaking up your money. Start with trouble codes, then move forward. BTW,The wrench is a service indicator.
@NYMDS9 hi i also have problem with my 1998 ml 320. the car is running smooth no problem but it takes a few turns to twist the key while in the ingition so my question is why is it so difficult to twist the key?
the electrical portion of the ignition switch is probably needing replavement BUT i would spray some WD40 or equivalent down the key slot to see if that helps ifit does NOT help i would have have u define 'hard to turn' in a video from u .. because what one person thinks is hard to turn could mean long crank times in reality... more than once have i seen cases like that... in other words id have to see it.. and anybody who thinks they know otherwise does not know what is realistic and fantasy .. if u send me short video of the problem actually takin g place i will help you
Please check your owner manual on page 81 and 82, step by step it teach you how to reset it, wrench 700.(Flexible Service System FSS), this is a service reminder. you can do it yourself.
Me and I still can’t figure it out I have that same starting issue to where it starts a lil rough like that the first time but then it turns on fine after that if you have any idea pls let me know
I dealt with problem before obd2 reader would help figure this out but it seems to me your crank position sensor is going bad, they always go bad on these mL series well any mercedes really the sensor is located on the driver side rear of the engine good luck hope this helped
The beeping is caused by a "Break leaking" your back and front break lines might have a hole, crack, rusty so therefore causes that beep. My had the saaaame problem and I had to replace the break lines ($500 with labor included)...I hope I helped. Hope u fix it
Hi my Mercedes 2000 ml320 just died in road will not turn over just had brake booster changed spark plugs Coles, wires .fuel firter what's wrong with it
Try the ignition and spark plug. Also that is the service notice, the thing the wrench. Also do the oil while the ignition and spark plugs are being changes.
You probably have bad oil sitting in the car, or have to get a new engine because mines doesn't as like yours. Mines more silent, also it can be the starter which is on the back of the engine on the transmission. On top of it will look like a plastic house then a wire.
take it to a shop so that they can do a diagnostic could be your crank sensor if they run a diagnostic and the computer says its a sensor but not what one take 2 new crank sensor put it in or have them done it
if u see no movement of tach needle at all during cranking then the crank sensor would be a good place to start.. but they rarely fail completely only when hot. so. the fuel pump is likely getting old and u dont have to remove the gas tank to change unlike most other auto makes..
There is a non stop warning chime in my 1998 ML320. if the wheels are turning, its chiming. Previous owner has had new tires, breaks etc. He believes it is a wiring or fuse issue. (He is a trusted friend, not a stranger) Where can I find a schematic of the wiring and fuses?
check battery first at AutoZone for free then check the alternator but if it was the alternator your batt light would stay on happen to me before cause your truck would be running on just the battery so im guessing u need a new battery n if not fuel pump
perdona yo quiero saber como se llaman todos los testigos del m l 320 gasolina todos todos porfa darme un enlace o algo para saber que significan todos un saludo
Get a new fuel pump spark plugs and ignition wires. Change the fuel filter and run some Liqi Molly fuel injection cleaner through the system too after that an fresh oil change that should do it from what I can tell from ur video
I have a problem with the seats does not work any of the 2 front my car is a mercedez 320 of the year 2000 and check the fuses are ok, someone can help me?
Help!!! My 2001 ml320 just die at work...try to jump it..thought it was the battery cuz lightt was deem n when u start it the lights turn off...but the starter make a clicking noise...Wat can it be a starter?
I have a 99 ML 320 with 85,456 miles and my car cuts off when I start it up then when I try again it cuts on just fine ... Can someone give me a hint of what might be wrong before I have to take it to Mercedes???
My 2003 model ML320 has been performing very well. I changed my ignition key about a week ago. Ive been having water dripping into the car from under the dashboard. I checked and saw the water gets in through the convertible top. the ducts are blocked so I sent it to the workshop for cleaning. After the car wouldn't spark when I turn the ignition key on. The message that comes is 'Start Error". Both The local electricians and the dealers have tried but it wouldnt start. Any idea what is wrong? How can this be rectified?
In your main key - inside should be a little tiny piece of plastic which is actually a cheap but it looks like plastic - really small. With out this cheap car will not start or will and immediately will turn of due to start error. If you still have this cheap just simply bring to dealers - thats it.
+duane howard .. mine has a sun roof... thinking about pealing back the roof with oxy acet . then a tarp LOL yep ,conv't ml320 is like the unicorn ... cheers duane
I has similar issue with my ML430 year 2001. I were unable to startup the engine from the first start when the engine cool. it turned out the computer controller needed to be replaced, it cost about $600 part and labor. I had it replaced sine almost a year now, still going strong. Hope this help someone else.
I've had over 20 cars in my somewhat short life... the 99 ml320 is the most useless, frustrating, biggest POS known to human kind.... you name a part on it, any part... IT HAS GONE WRONG OR BROKEN...
after servicing my 2005 ml270 CDI I am having a problem getting it start. Starts for few seconds then dies. change air filter/ oil filter/ spark plugs/ fuel pump same result.
I'm betting on the pressure in the rail bar - it dropped and the engine shuts off. This can be caused by a faulty rail pressure sensor, an injector leak, etc.
at almost 200k miles you're better off getting a new car considering the money you'll spend fixing it will be worth more than the car itself. 200k miles is enough for any car unless you have a bulletproof toyota or honda.
i am planning to buy a 2000 ML430 but the only problem with the car that is all the windows won't open and the owner says it might be the relay on the switch whatsoever, any idea about this concern? thank you all
Chris Sta Ana my dad has a w163 ml320 and we had the same problem. It is either the window controls on the center console, or the regulator. To replace the regulator, you have to take off the door panel.
My gas gage doesn't work any ideas bout that and also my radio works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't can someone help me it is 2002 ML320 also does anyone no where I can get a good used rear bumper
Linda Radley theres avideo on how to fix ur problem passenger side under the dash theres a fuse panel pull out the fuel fuse turn key on on position and put fuse back in it should fix ur problem but check
These cars suck all of the ml series do wife had 1998 ML320 it kept breaking down so she traded it for a 2003 ML500 V8 it is a major piece lights in the dash keep going off the radio went out and they eat gas and brakes.Dont buy these trucks but the whinning you hear sounds like your power steering fluid is low they are known to leak from the pump in these trucks
