A centimorgan (cM) is just a unit of measure for DNA. I know, it sounds very sciency. For those who are acquainted with the cM, you may know they are very helpful in helping you determine your relationship with someone else. In fact, the more you get into genetic genealogy, the more you rely on centimorgans to predict your relationships.
But centimorgans can't always tell you the whole story. After watching this video you will have a better idea of what your cM's CANNOT do, which might be more important than what they CAN do. What do you think?

The more cM you have, the less options there is. The less cM, the more options you have. DNA painter is a good tool to help determine the relationships.

I have a sizable problem, because my dad passed away and i have already counted 9 matches to my dna that are greater matches than to my mom and the difference is usually about 10cM. Of the nine matches 4 are matches to each other because they are a family, the other 5 have minimal shared matches. Except in 2 cases. They are the interesting ones because one is matching up to my third cousin on dads side and the other is matching to a fourth cousin on my mom’s side. Is this enough evidence to say my parents are like 5-8th cousins.
