PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR -- Episode 85
"The Baker Dozen"
Recorded February 9, 2019
For release on February 15, 2019
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To support the creative process that goes into producing PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR each week, please consider becoming a PRODIGY Patron. Not only will you help to ensure that the creator of the series can sustain the ongoing work and devote the time necessary to create the show each week, but you'll also receive the benefits of being a PRODIGY Patron. At a minimal commitment of just $5 a month, you'll get early access to the show, usually about a day before it drops for public release. For $10 a month, you'll get early access AND exclusive content that's created only for PRODIGY Patrons. And at the $20 level, you get all that PLUS you'll get your name in the closing credits at the end of the show as one of the show's Producers. I sincerely thank all of our PRODIGY Patrons, and am grateful for your support. You guys ROCK!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On this week's show, we began the day with twelve kids hoping to make the show. When I saw that they were evenly divided between six scratch bowlers and six handicap bowlers, I thought this would be a good opportunity to create a format that would enable all twelve kids to be on the show.
So the six handicap kids and six scratch kids bowled a one-game qualifier, where the handicap kids would compete with one another and the scratch kids would compete amongst themselves, so we could seed players 1 thru 6 in each group. At the end of the qualifying game, we paired 'em up -- 1 with 1, 2 with 2, 3 with 3, and so on -- in a six-team, 5-match stepladder finals in which they would bowl Baker-style doubles matches, with one player on each team bowling in the odd numbered frames and the anchor bowler on the team bowling in the even numbered frames (including the 10th).
The handicaps for the kids in the handicap division were 90% of the difference between their current league average and 200. So they are taking one half of their handicap into the doubles match (since they're each bowling one-half of the game, or 5 frames).
As you'll see, this format produced a series of very interesting matches, with a number of close finishes that went down to the 10th frame to decide a winner.
As always, your comments are welcome. But as is customary, I must remind you that if all you have to offer is to insult or demean our kids, your comment will be deleted, and when comments are especially mean-spirited, the user will be blocked from posting again in the future. These are kids, and they aren't the only ones who read these comments. Their coaches and their parents read these pages, and I will not tolerate disrespect of our bowlers. If you have a critique, keep it helpful, not hurtful, and everything will be just fine.
Your play-by-play announcer is the same guy who created PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR and puts the show together each week, Coach Randy Brown, a USBC Silver Certified Coach and former PBA member.
If you enjoy this video, please leave a "thumbs up." If you want to be notified whenever we post a new video, click the SUBSCRIBE button and follow the prompts. @@ProdigyBowlersTour I will definitely check it out! My 'glory days' of bowling were back in high school. Fortunately for me, Southern New York had a thriving program back in the mid-90's of which I was a beneficiary. Twenty-five years later and a totally different career path, I still have a passion for the sport. So, watching your channel is not only interesting in and of itself, but definitely has a kind of nostalgia for me. Thank you again for your innovation and for your commitment to doing such excellent work!

Coach Randy I was wondering if you know this. I live in Brooklyn, NY. When a bowler here throws a "Brooklyn" shot we say he went "Jersey". It's because I think they call it a Brooklyn because it's on the wrong side of the pocket. Brooklyn people won't say that so we say it's a Jersey shot.

Jason Belmonte was kind enough to appear on PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR on our last PRODIGY TOC (late June, 2018). In return for his appearance, I told him I'd be happy to run any commercial(s) he might have, either for Storm or something else. He sent me that spot, and I'm more than happy to run it. I insert commercials into every show -- usually they're old retro bowling commercials of some kind, sometimes it's for something I'm trying to sell, sometimes it's something I've offered to run like the USBC spots that get inserted sometimes.

As a 2 hander myself and it took me 5 years to get it down with a good release. Brandon and Anthony almost have the same release with the high and tight elbow. And I feel that causes them to lose a lot of accuracy. They're both solid bowlers. But I think if they didn't cradle the ball as much with the high elbow they'd both massively improve. Not saying anything bad about them or their games. Just a thought on how they could become more consistent.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
Kara still bowls in our league. I think she's a senior in high school this year, so we probably won't be seeing her after this season unless she comes back to visit. I'd love to get her on the show at least once more before she goes off to college. She sort of backed off of competitive bowling this year. I think the fire went out. She enjoys bowling, but the white hot intensity of tournament bowling I think just burned her out.
@blockcl
@blockcl 5 лет назад
That's a very interesting comment you made regarding Kara possibly burning out on competitive bowling. I think I'm around your age (let's just say north of 60) , and I don't recall there being much , if any , kind of youth tournament circuit when I was "Prodigy age". We had Sat. morning league and whatever we bowled on our own. The benefits of youth tournament bowling are obvious for their development of youngsters physical and mental game , but how do you guard against the "too much too soon" syndrome? Do parents ever consult you on what you think is an appropriate amount of participation? I hate to see kids get turned off to an activity because they over expect or feel too much pressure.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
I can't think of a time when a parent has asked me about it. But I observe a lot of parents with their kids, both in a competitive tournament environment and in the practice environment (and I consider league a part of that "practice environment"). I would just say this: I believe it should be required viewing for every parent with a kid in competitive bowling to watch the TV series "The Short Game," which was a one-and-done reality series that aired a few years ago. You can now purchase it on iTunes. There's also a movie by the same name, which I assume is similar, although I know it has different people in it. The show followed the progress of about eight kids and their families as the kids prepared for the largest youth golf tournament in the world. Rather than describe it, I'll share a link to the movie trailer. Suffice it to say, the TV series (which is what I watched, not the movie) shows the parents pushing the kids awfully hard. Too hard, if you ask me. It gets pretty ugly at times. I think all parents should see how ugly it looks when you see someone else doing it. They might throttle back a little. This is how you burn out your kids, IMHO. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z-sJyMOdZCM.html

Hunter seems to be rushing his feet a bit. Slowing his feet will help with his precision both for one and two handed bowlers.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
@Chris -- Slow feet is very much old school teaching. We don't really uniformly teach it anymore. Norm Duke, for instance, on his DVD, talks about how FAST feet can benefit certain players (like him). My experience is that smaller players (like Norm Duke, or like Hunter) are the ones who most benefit from fast feet because it helps them to generate more forward momentum, and hence, more ball velocity. Hunter is a little guy who uses the full approach (over 15 feet), takes six steps, and fairly sizeable steps at that. So his feet have to move pretty quick. This is no longer considered a negative for players that can benefit from it. Since Hunter has no other way to generate much ball speed until he grows bigger and stronger, I have no problem with the speed of his footwork. Where I have a problem with Hunter's speed is when he doesn't stop to look down and set his feet before he goes, or doesn't take the time to set himself and get clear on what he's trying to do before he begins his approach. But the speed of his footwork is of no concern to me at all. Not yet, anyway.
@Haterage
@Haterage 5 лет назад
BrownswickBowling BrownswickBowling my apologies for the miscommunication/ misunderstanding, when I referred to the slowing of the feet I was talking about the shots where his plant foot hits and he’s still on his back swing or when he hops. I personally have a five step approach using the full approach and have an average ball speed on 15.6 so I completely understand the setting feet part. That’s a big issue with kids and even adults I’ve helped. And also, thanks for the response.

If you'll pay attention when watching the show, I always tell you the name of the bowling center and where we're located at the start of the show. Then, throughout all the matches, when you see the scoresheet at the bottom of the screen, look just below it. There, you'll see the name of the bowling center and the city and state in which it's located. That stays on-screen for almost the entire duration of the whole show. So how could you possibly not know where we are?

That's the Big Four
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
I actually had never heard it until I heard Kelly Kulick mention it one of the telecasts she worked in recent years, and I loved it. It refers to Nixon's famous pose with both arms in the air and both hands making the two-fingered "victory" sign. That's where it comes from. When I was growing up in the '60s, it was more commonly referred to as "Double Pinochle." Only later in the '70s and '80s did I heard it called "Big Four." And I heard Nelson Burton, Jr. occasionally refer to it as "Big Tonk" on ABC's Pro Bowlers Tour. But the "Richard Nixon" reference is one I only heard for the first time in recent years when Kelly Kulick used it on one of the telecasts she worked for CBS Sports Network.
@blockcl
@blockcl 5 лет назад
Thanks for the explanation. Double Pinochle is the term I grew up with in Wisconsin in the 1970s. I used it at a tournament in Las Vegas a few years ago , and got some funny looks from the locals. I also called what you refer to as a "Jersey squasher" type strike a "snowplow" , and they swore they had never heard the term before , so perhaps there are still a few regionalisms left in the sport.
