PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR -- Episode 53 -- Recorded February 17, 2018 for release on February 20, 2018. "MATCHMAKER OPEN"
On today's edition of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR, we are thrilled to announce that Dannial Cohen's Striking Results Pro Shops, with locations inside most of the Stars and Strikes bowling centers throughout the greater Atlanta area, has ponied up THREE spots in its upcoming STORM MATCHMAKER ball demo days this weekend, Saturday February 24th at Stars and Strikes Woodstock and Sunday February 25th at Stars and Strikes Stone Mountain. On today's show, we award one of those spots to the winner in our LITTLES division, and the other two spots to the top two finishers in our BIGS division.
With a smaller than usual field today due to many of our top players being out of town at the Georgia Interstate All-Stars Tournament in North Carolina, we had three "LITTLES" compete, leaving two to square off in our opening match for the championship in the LITTLES division. And with 8 players starting the qualifying round in the BIGS division, we eliminated three of them at the end of qualifying, leaving the top five to bowl on the show.
We've also dusted off one of our original formats used in some of our early PRODIGY shows back when we first got started with the series. I call it the "Survivor" format, as all five bowlers compete in the first match, and only the low bowler is eliminated. That leaves four to bowl a second game, and the low bowler is "bowled off the island," leaving just three to bowl a third game. Those three will square off in the final match to determine who will be the last two standing. Those will be our winners of the two spots among the BIGS at the STORM MATCHMAKER ball demo day presented by Dannial Cohen's Striking Results Pro Shops.
Many thanks to Dannial for making these three spots available to our kids. And we invite you to reserve your spot in the STORM MATCHMAKER event. Call Dannial Cohen (the number is revealed on the show) to book your spot....while they last.
As always, your comments are welcome. But we must insist that you keep your remarks about our bowlers positive. The mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers. Negative comments that are clearly intended to insult, demean and be hurtful to our players will not be tolerated and will be removed. In some cases, the author of such comments will be blocked from further posting on this channel. If, however, your comments come from a helpful perspective and are intended to educate, motivate or help our players, then we certainly welcome such comments.
Your play-by-play announcer and Executive Producer of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is USBC Silver Certified Coach and former PBA member Randy Brown.

(But honestly, the Facebook group is kept more current.)
Again, thanks for watching. Be sure to share our videos with your friends on social media.
NOTE: There will not a full-length, regular PRODIGY next week. Rather than filming a regular PRODIGY on 2/24/2018, we'll be taking the camera and following our three winners to the STORM MATCHMAKER ball demo day, where we'll capture them testing out the latest STORM and ROTO GRIP equipment. Plus, since many of our viewers have never seen how a ball demo day works, we figured you might enjoy seeing how it's done. So be on the lookout for a special PRODIGY SHORT next week in lieu of our usual weekly offering.
Thanks again for watching!
Enjoy!

2ND ROUND first game you made a mistake on josh's score fyi
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
I *HATE* it when I make those mistakes. Let me tell you, adding the scoring graphics to the show is one of the first things I do when I build these shows, and it is a very tedious, time-consuming exercise, and VERY detail-oriented. When the show is fully edited, I'll bet there are literally hundreds -- maybe a thousand or more -- tiny little slivers of video on the assembly timeline. With as many as 10-15 layers of graphic slivers stacked on top of one another to build the composite graphics that comprise the scoreboard. Doing just the scoring takes almost a full day of intense editing. That I don't make more mistakes with it is a far bigger surprise than the fact that there are a few mistakes here and there. But this one is especially maddening because when I got to the end of the game and saw the score as 254, I figured there might be a mistake. Because I remembered at the bowling alley, it said he'd shot 255. But we've had so many scoring errors with the scoring system at the bowling alley that I didn't really assume that it was right and I was wrong. But I did go back and look at the scoring. But what I looked at was the math. I didn't see any math errors in the scoring. I didn't go back and verify that all the first ball scores corresponded with what was actually knocked down on the first ball. So I blew it. Sue me. Tell ya what: When I can get through a month of these shows without making a single mistake on the scoring, I'll get you to reward me with an all-expenses-paid vacation to Pebble Beach. Whaddya say? (Trust me. You'll be safe. It'll never happen.) So, congratulations, Josh. You shot 739, not 738. I stand corrected.

I'd rather have someone point out these mistakes than to not know about it. But it does agitate me whenever I learn that I screwed up. I do everything humanly possible to avoid just these types of mistakes.

I don't bowl that often with the kids on Saturday. So when I do, it's nice to get past the qualifying round. I knew we were going to have a small field this week, what with so many of our top players being out of town with the Georgia All-Stars tournament. So I figured I'd bring my equipment and help fill out the field a little. One of the parents bowled, too. It was a fun, if exhausting, day.

Once again, excellent episode this week. My question for to you this week is are some of the other Prodigy regulars planning on attending the ball demonstration this week (which would be a perfectly logical reason for not taping a regular episode this week)? BTW the certificates you gave out this week were they all for the Saturday session or either session?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
The reason we're not doing a PRODIGY this Saturday, quite simply, is because I won't be there to film it. I'll be accompanying our three youngsters right after league to Stars and Strikes Woodstock for the only squad they could bowl after league. I want to film them going through the experience so our viewers can see how a ball demo day works. Hunter was really excited when he heard we were giving away spots in the ball demo day. He thought if he won, it would mean he would get those seven balls you see in the flier. Uh.....it doesn't quite work that way, young fellow. :-) And I've been asked before, "Do they drill up a ball for everyone who attends?" Uh, the answer is 'no" to that as well. So I figured filming the event would give me an opportunity to show how they do a ball demo day, and get a little reaction from our kids to the new equipment they'll be trying out. But it's mostly to show how a ball demo day works and to give Dannial Cohen a chance to be acknowledged on camera for generously making these spots availble to our kids. I'm not aware as to whether any of our other PRODIGY kids have any intention of attending this ball demo day. Although I'm sure if they want to call Danniel and reserve a spot, he will be happy to sell them a spot in it, assuming he has any left.

It would be interesting to do a tournament where the sweep gate is not used! You would be able to use your deadwood to hit other pins...like in Candlepin Bowling!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
I know of no way to rig the A2 rake to not come down or the pinseter to not come down and lift (and the rake to sweep deadwood) on first-ball cycle. Sorry, it ain't happening. And to be honest, I don't love the idea. Tenpins ain't candlepins. Besides, you start rocketing deadwood around on a tenpin lane and you're liable to put out the light. No thanks.

Coach Randy, do you drift to the right on your approach? I used to do the same thing and it worked pretty well but the local pro told me not to do it -- and that, if anything, I should be drifting left. What's your opinion? Thanks!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
I agree with this. Although if you look carefully at my footwork, I actually walk straight until the slide step, which comes back to the right quite a bit. Probably because of the considerable weight I'm carrying. I've worked to correct this, but it totally screws me up. And these days, I'm bowling so infrequently that fixing it would be next to impossible. But I don't disagree.
@robp.7769
@robp.7769 6 лет назад
Thanks for the input. I thought you were throwing it pretty darn well for how little you've bowled. If anything, to my generally untrained eye, it looked like you got the best carry when you increased your axis tilt a little and threw a PDW type ufo ball. There's a lot to be said for the spinner, especially for players with lower speed and revs. It's also much less physically demanding. I'd stick to 15 lbs tho!

@dylanbulusan5472
@dylanbulusan5472 6 лет назад
Hey Randy. I have an idea for a future Prodigy event. Although it may include you bowling, I think it would be fun. Based off of the “2013 - 14 PBA League Challenge called the T.O. Challenge” The kids would have to match your ball for a better chance of winning the frame, or they could get the same amount of pins as you. Whoever has more “wins” at the end of the games will be the eventual winner. If they don’t match you, the difference between the two balls will be their score. But you want a low score or even better, a match, with the same exact pins up.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
I've actually got a format in mind that borrows a tiny piece of that suggestion, but isn't quite what you've suggested. I will always steer clear of anything T.O. related. I'm not a fan of his. He was a cancer on every NFL team for which he played, and I'm afraid his election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame has forever lessened my interest in and respect for that institution. I wish the PBA would divorce itself from him. They do not benefit from their association with him, believe me.
@dylanbulusan5472

BrownswickBowling Nice! Can’t wait to see the format in play. Not a huge football fan, but if I was, I might just feel exactly how you do.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
We've done a lot of oddball formats lately. I would expect that to settle down a bit. I prefer to sprinkle in the variations from time to time. We get a little crazy around the holiday season in December, but that sort of carried on through January and February. I expect it will settle a bit. I would love to make the three-game Swiss our default qualifying format. But it takes a little too long. Some of our participation would drop if we kept everybody there 'til 5 PM on Saturdays most every week. (Remember, they got there a little before 10 in the morning to bowl league, and I don't want to turn it into an all-day affair.) That's why we usually keep the qualifier fairly short. One game is TOO shot, especially if we've got people come over from other locations. I wouldn't drive clear across town to bowl one game and then be done. That wouldn't be right. So I think two games is a bare minimum when we have visitors. But I prefer three when I can get people to stay. The format I have in mind to which I was referring is a Doubles format, if that offers any clue. Since we've done a doubles and a team event recently, I'm not in a hurry to rush this one out. But we'll do it. It's one nobody has ever seen before. Something I dreamed up while watching the Super Bowl a few weeks ago.

That will never happen. One of the main things that makes PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR unique is its production quality. None of the music, none of the graphics, none of the virtual camera moves, none of the play-by-play, none of the on-screen scoring -- indeed, NONE of the production values that give PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR its signature look and sound would be possible on a live stream without spending tens of thousands of dollars and hiring a team of broadcasters to pull it off. I'm not just a bowling coach. I'm a broadcast professional, having spent my entire adult life in broadcast media. I would not put my name or my reputation on a cheesy live stream done on a shoestring the way we do PRODIGY. Given that PRODIGY is shot on a budget of exactly $ZERO (not counting the funding given to us by our extremely generous viewers who donated to our GoFundMe campaign this season to enable us to purchase a new camcorder and camera stand -- and there are more goodies coming), I try to make PRODIGY look as much like a network television show as is possible given the financial limitations inherant in the project. You want to know what a live stream would look and sound like? Put your cellphone on a tripod, point it at a pair of lanes, and tell a bunch of kids to go bowl. YOU might put your name on a video like that. *I* won't. I decided very early on that if I'm going to do these shows, they're going to look as professional as I can make them look, given what I have to work with. A live stream is something any idiot with a cellphone can (and often does) put up for the whole world to see. I wouldn't sacrifice the integrity and quality of the PRODIGY brand by putting the PRODIGY name on such a product. I get the appeal of "live" streaming. But we're not on that tight of a schedule, and without a hard time for viewers to make an appointment to watch, there's no guarantee we'd have that many viewers to make it worth doing. Our viewers watch over the course of a week, a month, a year. Look at the number of views these videos get. They don't all come the first hour or two the show is posted. They keep coming in over the days, weeks and months after the video is posted. I see no advantage whatsoever to doing a live show, and I see HUGE down side to it, given the sacrifices in quality the show would have to endure. We'd disappoint most of our fans if we put out a shoddy product like that. They'd leave. And I wouldn't blame them.

@ProdigyBowlersTour

It seems like every time we do one of these shows where we have multiple winners in his age group, he always grabs one of the winning spots. He captured one of three spots in the BOWLAPALOOZA ball demo day in the Fall of 2016 last season. Then earlier this season, he was one of a three-member team (with Dylan and Dakota) who won on our Uno Dos Tres show where three-member teams compted. And here he is again winning when we had three winners of entries into a ball demo day. Nolan may not be as naturally gifted as some of our players, and he may not have a career as a professional bowler in his future (we don't really know yet), but he is gritty and has an abundance of determination. That alone will carry you pretty far in this game. I was so happy for him on this day. He just bowled super. And in the final match, on the ball that didn't strike, he put it right where it needed to be. Eliminate his open frame when he chopped the 5-9 a frame or two earlier and Nolan finishes 2nd instead of......who was that old guy, anyway?

I think Marc should slow his feet down some. It's seems to have affected his timing and maybe his release. From what I can see, he could get just as much or more speed with his feet slower, more power, and more accuracy.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Nate Johnson - Agreed. But Marc’s bigger problem comes from getting his spine angle too far forward too soon in his approacg, getting his center of gravity up and out in front of him, which promotes a sensation of needing to run just to keep his feet under him. You see, the fast feet are a symptom, not the cause, of the problem.

Storm and 900 Global operate as two separate companies. Storm bought 900 Global so they'd have another plant within which they could manufacture their balls. That's pretty much the extent of their overlap. The design of the balls are done by the two separate companies, and they operate more or less like competitors. It's unlikely that you'll see any 900 Global equipment at any Storm Matchmaker days anytime soon.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
I don't think so. They only bought 900 G so they'd have another manufacturing plant. There's no involvement between Storm/Roto and 900 with regard to ball design or promotion.

It's just the house shot. I wouldn't be all that interested in bowling on a sport shot. Although the thing that got me interested in getting back out there and bowling was that we had the kids bowling on Wolf the week before. I *love* bowling on short oil. I *love* playing out by the gutter. I'm fearless about that. Although as rusty as my game is these days, I'd probably send enough of 'em off into the drink that people might mistake me for Christian.

Is Nolan still on 12lb?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Honestly, I'm not sure. Last time I asked him, he told me he was throwing 12. His dad insists the ball weighs 13. So his dad told me he was going to put the ball on a scale this week. Doesn't really matter. I think he's big enough and strong enough that he could easily handle 14. But it's not my call to make. If Nolan's dad wants him to stick with a lighter weight (to protect him from injury or any other reason), that's his prerogative. He's the parent, and I respect that. But this weekend at the ball demo day, he can try a 14 pounder or two and see how it feels in his hand. Balls at ball demo days never fit perfectly, but they can get fairly close. He'd get a sense, anyway.

Wait. So Hunter no longer bowls one handed?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Hunter started fiddling with two-handed a couple of months ago. Then he kinda went back and forth. I told him he should make up his mind and commit to one method. I actually advocated for him switching to two-handed. I think he'll be better bowling two-handed than one. At least for now. Until he gets bigger, the ball seems to swing him rather than him swinging the ball when he throws it one-handed. That said, I've also told him he might want to keep one-handed an option when he's shooting right-side spares like the 10 pin.

Ever since I tore a ligament in my pivot foot, my game has been dicey. As a result of bowling so infrequently, I'm really rusty and my game has just gotten worse as I've gotten more and more out of shape due to inactivity. It sucks. On this day, I felt about like I did the first time I went bowling a few months after having open heart surgery. It was borderline too much physical activity. And I was glad when it was over. If I get back into it, I'll have to get back in better shape. This was an ordeal. But still, if I do make that commitment (and I'd love to), I'll have to fix a few things that have fallen out of sorts. How I managed to book a 216 average last season with essentially this same style remains something of a mystery.

Why is Hunter bowling with 2 hands
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
He started messing with two-handed some months back. I told him he'd do well to commit to one way or the other. I personally think he's perfectly suited for bowling two-handed and will get better results with it, at least for the time being until he gets a little bigger and stronger. He does well both ways. But he's at that size right now that when he swings the ball one-handed, the ball seems to swing him as much as he swings the ball. He seems to be in much better control when he trhows it two-handed. That said, I told him he should consider continuing to bowl one-handed at his right-side spares, like the 10 pin. He's a pretty good little spare shooter either way. But those right side spares can be challenging, even with a plastic ball, when the pins are tucked over on the far right side of the lane.

One of my fantasies is to get a PBA tour pro to stop by some Saturday and agree to bowl against our winner. How cool would THAT be? My fantasy goes on to include having them sit in with me as I'm adding the play-by-play to the show and have them serve as the color analyst. They'd probably get a kick out of doing it.

Well coach Randy I am not even close to being as famous as you my bowling league bowls only on house shot the only reason I have my own ball is because my dad used to bowl and people in my league use house balls consistently and there are only 8 people the highest series is 525 even though this is my first year in a bowling league and I am probably the third best and next year maybe the best

Coach has pretty weak wrist position at address
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 лет назад
Believe me, I'm well aware of all my game's shortcoming. They start with me being woefully out of shape, which has been related to some injuries and health issues in the past 18 months. And the fact that I just turned 65 isn't exactly helpful. I could list all the problems with my game, but to what end? My days of tournament bowling are, in all likelihood, behind me. I went on a tear a few years ago and won 13 tournaments in a 16-month stretch. Not big tournaments, but each one had some real quality players in it. But when I tore a ligament (or was it a tendon?) in my foot and ankle, things changed. I haven't been able to bowl much ever since. And let me tell you, inactivity and a lack of practice will make your game go away in a big hurry. I had literally bowled twice since October when this show was filmed last Saturday -- once at a tournament in November, and once in December when McFluffy and I staged an impromptu Thursday evening PRODIGY episode called PRODIGY AFTER DARK (which I won, a fact that McFluffy hates hearing me remind him of). The fact is, when we were taping this show you see here, I got so hot, I felt like I might be having a heart attack. It was pretty dicey, and I was just trying to get through it. There's no doubt that physically, my game is nowhere close to what it was even a couple of years ago. As for my wrist position at address, that was an adjustment I made that day. I usually have my hand in a much stronger (under the ball) position. But I wasn't getting out of the ball as cleanly as I'd like. So I made that slight change in my setup and it made a slight different...on most shots. Bottom line, I didn't bowl great on this show. I made a few good shots. But too few to be very boastful about. The only thing about my performance on this day that I took much satisfaction from was that I made a few clutch strikes when I needed them.
