PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR -- 03-04-2017 "The Wolf Bites Back"

(Season 1, Episode 17) -- Eleven kids go to the starting line this week -- eight in the Varsity age group and three from the Junior Varsity. We winnow the field down to two finalists in each age division and decide the winner. This week our kids are bowling on the PBA oil pattern known as Wolf, the shortest of all the PBA patterns at 32 feet.
Also included in this week's show is a major announcement that is made in the commercials. Just wait 'til you see what we have in store for you. :-)
And finally, a programming note: After this show, we're taking a one-week break, as I won't be at the bowl next Saturday, March 11th. Our next filming will take place on March 18th, and our next show will be posted a couple of days after that.
Coach Randy Brown on play-by-play.
PS: Before anyone asks, the reason why we join games in progress is to save time. This show is already the second longest we've ever done. If we'd included all the frames in all the games, the show would have been two hours long and I might not have had enough battery power on the camera to have filmed the end of the championship match. (And how anti-climactic would THAT have been? LOL!)
Thanks for watching. Please remember to SUBSCRIBE and LIKE our videos if you feel so inclined. I really appreciate you watching. And as always, comments are welcome, but please stay positive. These are KIDS, and our purpose here is to "Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers." Hurling personal insults and making remarks that are hurtful is not in keeping with that spirit. Nor is it helpful or in any way useful in growing the sport of bowling. Be critical, absolutely, if you have constructive criticism. Even constructive criticism that is wrong-headed at least comes from a place of trying to be helpful. That sort of thing is always welcome. But leave the negativity and hurtfulness at the door. Thanks.

You'll get there. Practice, practice, practice. And make friends with better bowlers so you can bowl with them. You'll improve by being around good bowlers. Watch the pros on TV and RU-vid. Even watching the old-time pros from the '70s and '80s is helpful. But the best advice I can give is to find a coach in your area. Someone who is USBC Certified. You can find a coach in your area on Bowl.com. Click on the "Find A..." link on the homepage and follow it to "Find A Coach."

Thank you, Coach Randy, for all the work you put into this to create these really inspiring videos. I love watching them, and it's wonderful to see so many young people who like to bowl. Greetings from Berlin, Germany!

I simply couldn't have imagined I'd enjoy watching junior bowling as much as I do. It's getting to the point that I'm beginning to want to film my own team's practices for high school competitions. If only I had the means to do so.

BeyondThePhaneron Also, I agree...I started off watching youth bowling on here by watching some kids competitions from further North. Michigan? maybe? Ill have to look it up. Enjoyed their high school competitions, then I found prodigy, and liked it even more for some reason.

Thanks again Randy. I appreciate anyone who can take the time to try and make a difference for the future. You are A-1 in my eyes. If not for people like you, the future of the USA would be in jeopardy.-----I have bowled on this pattern, and it is rough to say the least. Charlie and Lamar were impressive considering how this pattern plays.---- I am glad to hear that Logan and Brandon won their tournament. I believe that you, (Randy) should get a lot of credit for those little guys doing so well.----Your inclusion of the very little guys, not only insures your future shows, but also gives these little fellows incentive to do something besides play video games, and other things that do not give them any exercise.---When I first went back to bowling after being away for 30 years, I bowled on a youth adult league with some fine boys. One of them is now back where we started, and bowling with me on an adult league. He is a fine boy, and carries somewhere around a 215 average.-- Again, I cannot say enough about how much your time and effort will mean to these boys down the road of life. May God bless you.

hw clark -- Your words mean a lot to me. Thank you. The way I approach this program is pretty simple: If I were a kid, what would I want to have happen at our bowling alley after junior league each week? When I was a kid growing up, I had a little mini-bowling alley in my basement and I always wished we could film "TV shows" there. But this was long before home video and home video cameras (we were still shooting on expensive 8mm film back then...cost prohibitive to shoot a 60 to 90-minute show each week). Now that such a thing is achievable, it was just a matter of making the commitment of time to shoot and edit the show each week. And while it's a lot of work (I'm not gonna lie to you -- it's a TON of work each week), it's a total joy because of how the show has been received, how the kids have responded to the whole concept, how kids from other centers have heard about it and are talking about it, and how much fun we have with it. The proof will be in the pudding, as it'll ultimately be judged on two things: (1) How many kids we attract to our program when the Fall bowling season starts up this September, and (2.) How the PRODIGY show grows. I have some big plans for it (you can read about it at prodigybowlerstour.com). No hurry to make it all happen, as I'm a big believer in how slow and steady wins the race. Done right, PRODIGY could grow into something truly meaningful. But that will require some good decision-making and continued support from good people like you. Thank you for watching.

If you haven't already, you tell Kara she has a solid form and very, very good repetition in her approach and delivery. It's obvious there's some drills and dedicated practice there. it certainly shows. With more time, staying true to well-developed fundamentals, she'll be dynamite in the years to come. And of course, how can you not enjoy watching Charlie. They all seem like such good kids. I so wish I had started back when I was that young. Great upload, sir. Thanks for an entertaining hour this evening.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
Kara is one of our most "practiced" young bowlers. She has a couple of different coaches she works with; one who's down in South Georgia, and one of our coaches who coaches our kids on Saturdays. I kind of back away, figuring she's got enough voices in her ear already. But I must say, the big leaps-and-bounds improvement in her game happened almost overnight after she went down and spent a day at the Kegel Training Center.

These young men have alot of talent. Charlie and Laman have good games! I'm impressed with them. Cj is really good too...he needs to take a close look at Jason Belmonte...Belmo will even change the angle of the spin of the ball...plus he needs to use straighter is greater...just like you said. I am wondering if Christian needs a heavier ball..agreed that he needs to lower backswing..high backswing makes his timing off and late to the fowl line....I think it's Nolan with the bent arm swing? He can be really good..I'd like to see him straighten his arm and learn to swing the ball with a relaxed swing..just coming up through the ball correctly... Great kids..the girls were doing well...I think this a great concept..teaching them what bowling the animal patterns are like....anyway thanks for you tubing it!! Blessings!!....Lamar seems to drop the ball quite a bit..I would use a hand exerciser and use some more resin...or may need to re-drill?

Oooooooo yay wolf! I like watching non pros playing in the oba patterns so I think you should do this more often and the WTBA patterns less
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
Well, to be fair, while I, too, enjoy seeing our kids bowl on the PBA patterns, the tournaments that the kids typically bowl on every month around here are usually contested on the WTBA "city" patterns. So we use those in order to prepare them for what they'll face. That said, sport patterns are sport patterns, and getting kids used to bowling sport patterns often simply requires getting them used to bowling on something decidedly more challenging than the house shot. With the difficulty we were having getting the new lane maintenance staff to put down ANY sport pattern, I'm just glad that they're putting out ANY sport patterns now.

It's tough getting certain kids to play out by the edge. They have this fear of dumping one in the gutter (in front of a bunch of people watching). Heck, I've dumped enough of them in the moat through the years with people watching that I'm immune to it. I suspect you might be, too. They'll get there...eventually.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
Thank you so much for asking. I would *love* to involve more of our little kids. And in recent weeks, we've started seeing a few more of them stay after league and participate in our PRODIGY tapings. I suspect some of them just weren't aware of it, while others may have thought it was either only for the bigger kids, or they figured they just couldn't compete with the bigger kids. (They wouldn't have to if we can get enough of the younger ones to bowl; that way they can have their own age division in which to compete, as was the case on today's show.) Our JV league is only about half the size of the Varsity, so we have fewer kids to draw from. But there are some others (including a couple of girls) who will be really good when they get bigger and stronger. I absolutely want to get more of the little kids on the show and have talked about doing a show devoted to JUST the little kids. It's in the works. It's just a matter of getting enough of them to take part.

what a great shiw again! I am sad to hear that there will be no show next week thats how much i am hooked in to these now. I really appreciate your skills in video production as well it must take a lot of time and effort to do all of that, you definitely deserve a break. and by the way do you know how long the oil pattern is at the pepsi tournament, because i keep getting tricked by thier patterns whenever i participate in it and i want to make last year the last time that i get tricked. Have a great rest of the week and a great week of bowling!

*sad face* Really going to miss this show next weekend. Im quite surprised with so many low scores, i would figure this would be a higher scoring pattern, similar to Cheetah. I've bowled on a pattern very similar to Cheetah once, and loved it. I'd love to get an actual chance to bowl on both Cheetah and Wolf....I'd do it just for giggles even. Ive only ever bowled on Viper and Chameleon, and Chameleon was no picnic....it seemed to change and transition fast on me through 6 games, and i was the only one on the lanes! lol!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
The low scoring pace was due, I think, to the fact that nobody was daring enough to play out by the edge, which is really where you have to play a short oil pattern.

@ProdigyBowlersTour

You've gotta have some real arm strength to be able to "palm it" and bowl without your thumb in the ball. The tendency of most people is to get around the ball too much.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
Christian actually bought a new bowling ball on Saturday. And for reasons I'll never understand, he decided to "replace" is Scandal (solid). The pro shop guy agreed with me that the ball he got (Tyrant) won't "replace" the Scandal, but rather, will be stronger than the Scandal. But I've never loved the ball recation he gets with that Misfit Pearl. I recommended to him that if he was going to replace anything, he should replace the Misfit Pearl. Not because it's a bad ball, but because it's too smooth. I expect a pearl to yield a bit more angularity than what he sees with that yellow ball. But he's stubborn and seldom listens.

Without seeing you bowl and being familiar with your game, I would be pulling a suggestion out of thin air. A better recommendation is to get your local pro shop guy or gal to make a recommendation after they've watched you bowl and consulted with you about what you're looking for in ball reaction. At 13, I'm not sure how big your arsenal is just yet, but that's another consideration -- namely, how a new ball fits into your ball progression. Do you have any holes in your arsenal that you need to fill, etc.? No way I can answer those questions without knowing you or having watched you bowl.

About half way through this video and my prediction has come true with LaMar. He has true long term potential if he doesn't get brainwashed by the whole "bigger the hook, the better the bowler" mentality. Not sure if he wins in the end. Will watch rest later. 👍

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
Well, I'll take that as a compliment and say, "thank you." If I could figure out a way to make this my full-time job and make lots of money at it, I would be happy to upload more. Clearly, this channel has proven in these past few months that there is a sizable audience out there for junior bowling videos. It's certainly an underserved market, that's for sure. And if I didn't have a day job during the week and a need to keep the money coming in, I would love nothing more than to do nothing BUT producing junior bowling videos. I have a blast doing these. It's a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun. But given the time it takes to edit them and get them ready to show, it would be unrealistic to think, even if I did it full-time, that I could put up more than two episodes a week. That's assuming they were all, say, 60 to 90 minutes. If they were all much shorter, then that might be a bit more achievable. But I spend between 20 and 25 hours a week, all between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning, editing these things. It's a grind. No complaints, mind you. Just saying it would be hard to do more each week than what I'm doing, unless we completely rethought the format of these shows. And they're pretty popular in the format we're using, so I wouldn't want to deviate too much from what's working. In any case, thanks for indicating that you'd like to see more. That's the nicest thing you could say. But you know that Rule #1 in show business is: "Leave 'em wanting more."

I didn't take it as rude. I took it as a compliment. I would *love* to do more videos each week. And maybe I will. But they'd have to be shorter. And since I only see the kids on Saturdays, any additional videos would have to be something else. Like of ME bowling. (And really, who wants to watch THAT?) LOL! (Or maybe bowling tips. I *do* want to film some of those. But it ain't happening until I resolve some AUDIO issues while filming.) Thanks for the encouragement, though.

Hey Coach Randy... Maybe you could introduce a handicap for female bowlers for your varsity division... Not to sound sexist but the physical development of a female tends to be slower than a male so having a handicap could increase the closeness of the competition.. Maybe consider that?
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
If I recall correctly, I believe we've done a show or two this year that used some form of handicap system. I know that our last episode of the season, which will highlight our league's season ending Tournament of Champions, will use a pins-over-average handicap system. Kara is talented enough to stay with the boys. She recently won a Junior Gold qualifier where she had the second highest score among all entrants, including the boys, including the U20 Boys. She just didn't take kindly to Wolf on today's show. The bigger issue is that we're just real short on girls in our program. Kara and Korina are the two best girl bowlers we've got, while on the boys side, we've got Charlie, Logan F., Brandon, Christian, Mikey, Nick and a couple of others who are capable of rattling off a string of strikes at any time. So the real solution, in my view, is attracting a few more quality girl bowlers into our program to give Kara some more competition to toughen her up and push her along. That's one of the purposes I hope this video series will serve -- namely, attracting some more kids to our program next season. We had another top girl bowler last year, but she graduated high school and is now off at college (Megan, who you see in the 12/17/2016 episode). If you know any good girl bowlers in the Atlanta area, send them our way. :-)

Similar to the Celebrity portion of the PBA's Chris Paul Tournament, players rolled one ball and the person with low pinfall was eliminated, and we'd repeat the process until we were reduced to two. On this particular show, we had kids of all ages and skill levels bowling together, as it was a format that really anyone could have won. But once it got down to the final two, rather than throwing just one ball, I had them bowl one game. In this instance, it would have been unfair if, say, one of our Junior Varsity kids had survived and been faced with bowling one of our better Varsity players. So I handicapped the final match, pins over average. It worked out fine. That's the only time I can recall using handicap on our show. When we get down to the final episode of the season when we show our league's Tournament of Champions event, that will be a pins-over-average handicap event, too. (That's mandated by corporate; we have no control over the format.) But trust me, that thing is always exciting. This will be the first year we film it for showing on RU-vid. You will love it, I promise. It's my absolute favorite weekend of the year. Better than the Super Bowl. Better than The Masters (golf) Tournament. (That's high praise coming from me.)

Mary Alice, we'll have an announcement soon about when....and WHERE....we'll be in 2017-18. Generally speaking, we accept visitors on the show. But understand this: Just because a kid shows up to bowl doesn't necessarily mean they'll be on the show. We usually have some sort of qualifying round to winnow the field down to whatever number we have on the actual show. So he'd have to survive the qualifying round to get to the show. We don't usually have enough kids to break it into age groups, so he might be competing against the big kids with the 200+ averages. In some cases, that's workable. In other cases, he might be in over his head. But as long as everyone understands that going in, it's all good. At the very least, he'll get to see a taping of the show, and he'll get to meet the PRODIGY kids. And I usually at least mention everyone who bowls. As long as the fields don't grow so big that doing so gets to be too unwieldy, I'll likely continue that practice as a way of showing a little bit of love for everyone who goes to the trouble of coming to bowl with us. Oh, one other thing: He'll have to come with a parent or guardian who can sign a release granting me permission to put him on RU-vid. I won't film a kid whose parents haven't (or a guardian hasn't) granted that permission. OK? Again, stay tuned for an announcement in the next week or two about when we'll start up again and where we'll be filming.

im happy i am getting the no rules in the mail tommorrow, however i would definitly not throw it on this pattern i would just throw my c300 nitrous (barely hooks) and it would probably be useful for once lol

For this pattern I would throw my spare ball outside by the gutter to try and get some high pin action.

I don't know about a spare ball, but the last time I won a tournament on short oil, I was playing up about the 2nd board throwing my Pitch Black, a urethane ball.

How do you feel about this two handed stuff? It seems alot of the kids have no control over this shot and this two handed wave is sweeping the nation as a result of some phenoms on the pro tour. In my opinion, I wish it would go away. I think it requires minimal skill to be mediocre and insane skill to be advanced. Man I miss the days of the simple down and in approach with a low powered ball. But....I am stuck in the 80's
@TheTutorialPanda
@TheTutorialPanda 7 лет назад
a lot of young kids don't feel as tho they can get the hook a lot of one handers have or cant get their hand right and they want to hook it like they do, so they see this style and want to hook it as much as possible.

Trunks Gaming I agree. And I should mention that I bowled no thumb for 10 years for the exact reason you mention. But I had alot of strength in my forearm so I never used this belmonte style. I went back to thumb in recently

The 80's Revolution theirs a kid I trie to help around 6th grade on my step sisters team that I tried working with and he just couldn't get 2 handed right so I had him bowl one handed and got his hand somewhat straight and is now happy that I got him to 1 hand and not 2

I don't have a problem with two-handed bowling. I believe it's the wave of the future, whether we like it or not. And I kinda like it. If I could generate enough speed with it, I'd do it myself. But the jury's out on whether it does any lasting damage to the bowler's back. I'm a bit skeptical. That's my only potential objection to it.

BrownswickBowling depending on the kids wise if they play more than one sport or how they are built it can take a major tole, one of my junior high team area from last year almost had to quit because him trying to hook to much of the ball was killing his calf and making it were he couldn't play baseball,track, or bowling for awhile. It all depends on your build belmo looks like he's got a good build but my team mate was kinda like a twig almost not very heavy built but has muscle on it. Thats kinda how I view that it is the future and it just sucked seeing him in pain from it

Will, one of the things that you will learn over time is how to adjust your angles when playing sport shots. On a 32 foot oil pattern like Wolf, you've got to get the ball out to the edge of the lane. By playing deeper inside, you practically guarantee that the ball is going to hook past the head pin.

@Dick Smith - Yes, it's true. After spending upwards of 20-25 hours of my own free time editing the video, I then laid down the play-by-play voice track while watching the video in real time...bleary-eyed, at about 3 AM, in an effort to get the video done before daybreak. The fact that I made a boo-boo is not surprising. I make tons of them. Probably many more than anybody ever notices (but I notice). What you don't know is how many mistakes I make that I do go back and correct (here's a hint: there's usually a few every week). Unfortunately, I don't catch them all. And really, the bigger surprise in this case is that I didn't call EVERYONE Lamar, or Dave, or Thor, or heaven knows what else. Sometimes when I get to the play-by-play, which is always the last step in the creation process, I'm so tired, it's a miracle I can talk at all. I make these videos for fun, and I make them as mistake-free as I can given that I do them entirely on my own, and I try to turn them around between Saturday afternoon when they're filmed and sometime the next evening (or Monday at the latest -- I do have to do my actual work on Mondays). It requires virtually every waking hour from Saturday afternoon until the time I go to bed Sunday night (and sometimes more). Try it yourself and see how close to mistake-free you get. I'm not meaning to sound overly defensive. Believe me, I'm perfectly capable of laughing at myself. (I do it all the time.) I'm just pointing out that these videos don't just make themselves. Human error is always part of any creative process. Especially when that human is doing all the work in such a compressed period of time. And make no mistake: I love every minute I spend doing it. The day I produce a flawless broadcast will be the last one I do. Don't hold your breath. LOL!
