Well, I thought our show last week (12/10) would be our last one before the holiday break. But since one of our former junior bowlers came home from college for the Christmas break and came ready to bowl on Saturday, it just seemed right to bowl with her and produce one more show before the holidays. So here we go, as two of our juniors square off in a doubles competition. Their partners? Well, one gets our former junior who's visiting from college. And the other, I'm afraid, is stuck bowling with me, Coach Randy. It's a fun, two-game match for bragging rights as we head into the Christmas/New Year's break. Enjoy. And yes, that's me, Coach Randy, on play-by-play.
Oh, and one last thing: One of our junior bowlers who you've seen on several of our webcasts has asked me to remind you that he has his own RU-vid channel, too, and would love for you to visit it at / @loganfossum
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

BrownswickBowling did you realise that 7 that spun around actually have you the 9 on the scoreboard instead of saying you got 8 but big deal it should of fell anyway
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
The Legendary E - Frankly I'm surprised I haven't made more mistakes in generating the on-screen score graphics. It's a lot of repetitive, tedious work. Fortunately, in this case, it didn't matter in the score since I was working on a strike and didn't lose any count since I made the spare. No harm, no foul.

dahur - I can't thank you enough for your kind remarks. I'll keep crankin' out these videos as long as our kids keep staying after league to bowl, and as long as the videos keep finding an interested audience. As for my own bowling, I'm always pretty sore and stiff on Saturdays after a short night's sleep. Being a nite owl by nature, I never seem to get a full night's sleep before getting up early on Saturday mornings to coach. Plus, as I mentioned in the video, I'm coming off a bad injury and have only recently started up bowling again after being sidelined for a few months.

@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
Thanks, Jay. I've been in broadcasting my whole life (since I was 16). www.RandyBrownVO.com And I used to do play-by-play (of golf) for a living. So I guess I bring a somewhat different skill set to the task of "coaching." But in the end, it's not about the voice. It's about whether a person can communicate. These videos are about celebrating junior bowling and elevating junior bowlers. If somewhere along the way I can sprinkle in a few coaching tips along the way, then these videos serve a useful purpose (in addition to being entertaining, I hope). And if my voice helps this project reach a few more kids (and grown-ups, for that matter), so much the better. I appreciate your kind words more than you know. :-)

My take on the 4. Christian has a high ceiling but needs a lot of work on consistent speed/form.Megan is ok but seems not so interested.Logan needs to read the line better and seems the ball is too heavy for him.Randy ..well ,haha,he has to hit flush because has very little ball,meaning he won't get the carry unless high flush but he plays simple and within his realm.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 5 лет назад
Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Christian is being held back by hi unwillingness to make fundamental changes to his game that would (a.) fix his timing, and (b.) make him more consistent. He's also not the best at reading ball reaction and adjusting on sport shots, a necessity nowadays. Megan is now off at college and is a valuable asset to her bowling team. I have no idea what, if any, aspirations she has as far as becoming a professional bowler is concerned. I suspect she has other plans for her life. So being a more than competent female recreational bowler going forward in her life is not such a bad thing. She'll beat most of the women bowlers in Atlanta. Logan is this close to being a champion bowler. Certainly he has won numerous area tournaments, but no biggies...yet. But he will. He's been right there, in contention to win one for the past several years, and he's due. As for me, my best playing days are behind me. I just turned 66 (I was 64 when this was shot). As recently as the last couple of years (when this was shot), I had won a total 13 tournaments. Thirteen. Not PBA tournaments of course. And not super big tournaments. But every one of them had some quality players in the field, and in some cases, had some of the top amateur tournament bowlers and/or top collegiate bowlers in the area in the field. So I make no apoligies for my game. It is (and it was) was it is/was. I'm physically not what I used to be. But I carry plenty of off-hits, so to say I need to hit high flush is simply inaccurate. But today, two years after this video was shot, I haven't bowled much in the past two years, ever since I blew out my ankle (which happened just a few months before this video was shot). I was lucky, at the time, to be able to WALK, let alone bowl. So again, I make no apologies. The one thing I always could do was strike in the 10th when I needed one. I suspect if I went out and practiced to get my game back in shape, I'd still be able to do it...because that's less a physical skill than a mental one. Thanks for your assessment. Wish you could come bowl PRODIGY with us. I'd love to see you take on the kids I see bowl in these things every week. Something tells me they'd wind your clock.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
In hindsight, I think I had the wrong ball. I was throwing my IQ Tour Nano, which is sort of my benchmark ball. But the back ends weren't quite finishing enough for that ball. It has a nice smooth motion, but given how little I've bowled in the last few months, I'm just not throwing it all that great. I probably should have been throwing my Lock or my Crux Pearl. Something that gives me a little more kick on the back. Oh well.

Ask the mechanic if you can get there before he leaves ( they usually work days. ) and ask him to check the transfer height of the pit board on lane 40. If as I suspect it's a mite lower it would slow the pins into the pinwheel thereby delaying the ball from reaching the ball lift rods. Quite often when that type of issue arises it traps the ball so occasionally the ball cushion comes down on top of the ball giving you an uncalled for 1'st ball cycle.

The kid who was practicing to our left hasn't yet bowled on our little webcast. Eventually we'll get him to stay and bowl with us. This kid has incredible up side potential. But he's a bit like a wild stallion right now. His swing is almost vertical at the top, which causes him all kinds of accuracy problems. Plus, he puts more hand on the ball even than Logan; so much so, that he has a hard time playing a lot of lanes because he hooks it too much. I'm trying to get him to dial down his axis rotation some so he can gain some consistency. Has the most natural release of any kid in our program. He just doesn't know which zip code the ball will end up in at the end of the lane. We're working with him. I think he has unlimited potential if he ever makes bowling a priority. (Right now, his thing is baseball. He has serious potential as a pitcher.) But he's smart, so I know he can get it if he decides to listen.

When you have a 180 on a machine tell Logan that pressing the reset button won't do anything but possibly lock up the pinsetter if it starts moving. When I had my own center as a head mechanic is used a liquid mercury switch to lock out the reset push button to prevent bowler induced 180's. I went from an average of 30 plus bowler 180's in open bowling to eliminating the problem. Randy you should send in an video tape to CBS just to see if they like your voice for professional bowling, You might get surprised what do you have to lose?

I think I know why lane 40 is cycling, it’s because the ball is stuck down there and it’s stuck where the ball hits the cushion and when the sweep rises the ball triggers the cushion causing the sweep to go down. I know that because the ball has not made it to the bowl return.

Nick was bowling out of his mind that day. I looked up at the scoreboard above his head and saw that he bowled 250 or 260 something one of the games he shot while bowling next to us. Frankly, I'd never seen him bowl that well. He's got tons of potential, but as I told someone else, he has a backswing that is almost vertical (and on some swings, almost goes past vertical). He can't control it. No one can control that. (And why would they want to?) But he's a bright young man, so it's been something of a conundrum for me to figure out how to break through to him. He's a bona fide talent on the pitcher's mound in baseball, so I know he's well aware that there are certain fundamentals that apply in every sport. So my inability to get through to him about his bowling has been a bit of a head scratcher. But on this particular day, he seemed to show that a light may have gone on above his head. I think that's why he decided to stay after league and practice. And sure enough, he got some great results, which you see on lane 38. Now, the question is: Will he stay with the changes he made when we return to bowl again on January 7th? Or will he have forgotten all about it and revert back to his vertical swing? We'll see. Hopefully he'll remember the success he had (and maybe read some of these positive comments he's receiving from people like you) and be motivated to stay with the adjustments he made. I hope so. I like this kid a lot, and I think he could be really good.

I can't really hook my ball very much. I have a tropical storm ball and I might throw it to fast. Some times 15 or 16 miles per hour. When I first got my ball it would hook alot but now I can't seem to make it move. It still goes through the pins but I feel like I'm throwing it straight. How can I fix this.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
For starters, the Tropical Storm is not one of Storm's more aggressive balls. Throw it on lanes with fresh oil and you can expect it to hydroplane most of the way down the lane. It's more for when lanes have started to dry out...or your ball speed is pretty slow. Second, ALL reactive resin bowling balls (and the Tropical Storm is one such ball) will lose their hook power after a while. That's because at a microscopic level, the cover stock of these reactive resin balls are very porous. If you were to look at the surface of the ball with a microscope, you'd see that it's like a mountain range, with lots of little peaks and valleys. (Not obvious to the naked eye or to the human touch.) As a result, whenever you roll the ball down the lane, conditioner (oil) from the lane's surface will be picked up off the lane (that's why you see those oil rings around the ball after you throw it), and some of that oil will soak down into the pores on the ball's surface. Over time, enough of that oil becomes absorbed into the ball and the ball simply becomes too slippery on its surface (because it's covered in oil) to be able to generate much friction on the lane (which is what causes hook). All ball manufacturers recommend cleaning the ball with ball cleaning solution after every bowling session. That's not just a gimmick to get you to buy cleaning solution (you can make your own--look around online for the better recipes); it's to enable you to extend the life of your bowling ball. But even with regular cleaning, all reactive resin balls require that you occasionally get them "deep cleaned," or as I call it, "de-oilled." The easiest (though most expensive) way to do this is to take the ball to your pro shop. They'll keep it overnight and put it in an oven or a solution of hot, soapy water. Or you can leave it in your trunk all day on a hot, summer day, and when you come out, the ball will be covered in oily goop. Wipe it off with an alcohol-based solution of some kind and that'll solve part of the problem. But realistically, the best way to fix this problem is to (a.) get a ball spinner and take the surface of the ball down to about 360 or 500 grit to open up the pores on the surface of the ball, (b.) depending on the ball manufacturer's recommendation, either soak the ball in hot, soapy (Dawn dish soap is ideal for this) water (Storm recommends this on their bowling balls) OR leave it in a low-heat oven MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR BOWLING BALLS (don't put your ball in the dishwasher or kitchen oven as it'll sit too close to a heating element and could crack). (Brunswick recommends the hot, dry oven method on their balls.) Then, (c.) after it's been through the cleaning step, put the ball back on the ball spinner and return the surface to either its factory specs or your desired grit level. This is the most effective method of restoring a ball to as close to its original "hookability" as is possible. I have a ball spinner and know how to do this on my own equipment, so I do it all the time. But if you don't have a ball spinner or are just not comfortable making such changes to your equipment, I strongly recommend taking it into your pro shop and letting them do it. Tell 'em you want the ball completely resurfaced, deep cleaned, and restored to its original factory specs and you'll see a discernible difference in the ball's performance.

BrownswickBowling how much would it cost if I bring it to the proshop
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
You'll have to ask your pro shop what they charge, and specifically what they do for that amount. But I would guess it might run somewhere in the $35 range.

BrownswickBowling I'm sorry that i am asking so many questions But is there a ball that would last longer. Like have a good performance for a longer amount of time.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 7 лет назад
There really isn't. Reactive resin bowling balls all require this kind of treatment to extract the oil from the pores of the cover stock. Depending on how much you bowl, once a year might be enough (if you only bowl, say 3 games every week or two) or you might need to do it once every couple of months (if you bowl 50-100 games each week like some of us have been known to do). It all depends on your habits. That said, you could always go to throwing a straight urethane ball (like the Storm Pitch Black, Pitch Blue or the Hammer Black Urethane). The problem with these urethane balls is that unless you have a pretty high rev rate, you're not going to get a lot of ball motion out of them. That's what makes reactive balls so special. Urethane doesn't have the same pores that soak up oil the way reactive balls do. But regardless, you'll decrease the number of times per year you need to take the ball in to have it deep cleaned if you'll just get into the habit of wiping the oil rings off EVERY SINGLE TIME you get up to bowl, and clean the ball with a cleaning solution after EVERY SINGLE TIME you finish bowling and head home from the bowling center. (Better to do it with one of these shammys they now sell instead of a towel. The shammys seem to do a better job of lifting the oil off the ball.) The more diligent you are about maintaining your equipment, the longer it will maintain its performance characteristics. That said, all bowling balls tend to get something called "ball shine" after, really, just a few games out of the box. "Ball shine" is where a dull ball will start to gain a bit of shininess to its cover. That can be easily fixed with an abralon pad. (And abralon pads are cheap. I buy 'em 5 or 6 to a box...in all grits...for about $17 on eBay.) But I would recommend consulting with a pro shop operator before you start sanding your bowling balls. You first kinda want to know what you're doing. (And remember, you can't do it in the middle of competition -- that's against USBC rules.)

That Pit Curtain in the back of Lane 38 was loose. I wonder how Nick’s ball got returned cause if a Pit Curtain is loose, then balls would get stuck in the back.

Yes, that's what I thought, too. But when Megan showed up unexpectedly this past Saturday (home from college for the holidays) and bowled as a pacer with some of our juniors, and then wanted to stay and bowl with us afterwards (she's been watching these Prodigy Bowlers Tour shows), well, we just had to bowl with her. And I wouldn't have even thought of doing so without filming it. Megan grew up in our junior leagues, and it was great to see her again. As you will see, she put on quite a show.

I know this is not my business and you don’t have to answer this but can you make money off of youtube
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 3 года назад
Yes and no. It is certainly possible to make money off of a RU-vid channel. In fact, there are some people who make producing RU-vid videos their full-time job. I am not one of those people, even though at one time, I was spending a full time job's amount of time producing videos for this channel when it was at its peak. But even then, while I was getting a few hundred bucks a month from Google (RU-vid), I would not call it a full-time income. Certainly not enough to live on. But then again, this channel only attracted about 19-thousand subscribers. There are channels that have hundreds of thousands, even millions, of subscribers. Those are the channels where the creator is making some good money. I have something like four or five or six RU-vid channels. The others that you might be interested in are "BowlingOldies," "RadioReactiveOne," and "rbvo." Then there are a couple more where I put my videos for my business website, but those are unlisted; I just use RU-vid to stream them while I embed the videos on my business website. To make any real jack from RU-vid, you have to get a bit lucky and create something that catches on in a big way. The content has to be very engaging, and the production quality needs to be really high. I thought at one time PRODIGY might catch on that way. But unfortunately, the niche for bowling videos -- even the pro tour videos -- is pretty limited. There's far more interest in gaming videos and reviews on tech-related stuff, music production tutorials, cosmetics, and other topics that I have no interest in producing videos about.
