Today's guest is Shelby Singleton. It was recorded in 2004. Shelby founded Plantation Records in Nashville. He also bought Sun Records from Sam Phillips. It's a great story.

A 28 minute interview and finally, a little past the 26 minute mark, the man almost--almost--cracks a smile. Never mind: he's not there to be a comedian. He had a remarkable memory and this was a very interesting and very well presented interview.

Shelby worked the road and the air.. as he said ‘a multi track mind’ pivotal figure. Looking for acts new and old. A Man who was a people person, ultimately with an instinct for a hit record. I initially knew of him through his Jerry Lee Lewis association.’They don’t make them like that anymore’. Thanks for posting.

Interesting interview. My first job in Nashville was with a masked Elvis impersonator called Orion (Jimmy Ellis) that was on Sun Records with Shelby Jr producing in 1980. I later worked as an intern at Mercury/Polygram when Jerry Kennedy was the head of A&R for Mercury. Both Jimmy and Jerry were super guys, very giving of their time and advice to a young man trying to be a part of the music business. Great memories.

A really, really interesting guy. For someone who didn't know much about the music business, until he actually started working in it, he mastered it completely . He also seems to have an excellent ear. When he said he produced Sarah Vaughan, that stopped me in my tracks. You had to be the best at what you do in order to produce Sarah Vaughan. she carried more music in her head, than most orchestras, so she would hear right away if Shelby was recording her instrumentally and vocally at her best. Your interviews show, that there are many talented people involved in the creating of the great music that we got to listen too. Thx. for sharing.

Ms. Vaughn was WAY before my time and clearly before hers, but the first time I heard her sing "Lullaby at Birdland," I do believe Clifford Brown is featured on the song as well as the album(?) In any event, her voice is akin to what I can only assume would be akin to listening to Niccolò Paganini playing his Stradivarius. Her instrument's depth and her pure love for the journey of sound she was willing to go through will always make her in a class all her own. When a vocalist can masterfully change the tonic of a song as she could, it truly is astounding. Great interview, Joe. P.S. Y'all never did get back to me about that "bang for the buck" question ;)

Fascinating interview from a legend of the music industry. His matter-of-fact, laid back attitude is humorous to people like myself who are in awe of his achievements. So many great hits, so many great performers and musicians. He's a remarkable man. The "Harper Valley PTA" story is real interesting. The discussion of Jerry Kennedy playing dobro was of particular interest to me. In my humble opinion Jerry's dobro playing on "Harper Valley", and his dobro playing on Tom T. Hall's "That's How I Got To Memphis", are the two greatest dobro songs ever recorded. When Shelby talks about the sound of "Harper Valley" being the reason for its worldwide reputation, for me it's the dobro.
@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum

Hi Joe... I have Jerry’s dobro used on these records in the museum. By the way... its a round neck and he bent the strings .... not using a slide. Best...Joe

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Hi Joe--- thanks for replying. He "bent the strings"? Well you are far more informed than me and I am not challenging you, but I don't see how it is possible to get that sound without a slide. I'm truly blown away to read your comment. I have listened to those solos so many times and still can't get over what you are telling me.
@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum
@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum 3 года назад
Hi Joe.... yeah it’s amazing how good Jerry played that dobro on Harper Valley. Jerry and family are close friends and I promise you he bent the strings. Its a easy to play round neck dobro. I’m pretty sure Jerry has never used a slide on anything. I did a interview with Jerry in 2004 at Shelby’s studio. I haven’t seen it for years but I’m about to edit it and put it up on our Vault Series. He might talk about recording Harper on that interview. Joe

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Hey Joe--- sure look forward to whatever Jerry Kennedy has to say. I hope you don't get bugged by all my comments, but I am a huge fan of country music. (And all kinds of music in general). Those gifted session musician virtuosos who played on so many of those classic recordings continue to inspire me, not to mention all those amazing songwriters who wrote all those wonderful songs, and those genius producers who ran the sessions. I have visited Nashville once but I hope to go back someday once the world has returned to normal. Would love to visit your Museum. Can you believe he details this man remembers from 30 and 40 years ago? (i'view recorded in 2004) This guy would take a stack of records probably right out of pressing plant and start driving around and hawking them to radio stations and the like, and he'd drive hundreds of miles to other states to other stations. In one sense, it was gutsy, in another sense, you're a small town radio station and here's your chance to play something new, and after a while, the guy handing you the record has brought you some nice records so you're happy to see him. He makes it work and then Mercury gives him a huge territory. I guess he had an ear, I guess he could develop a list of stations and who might like what he had. There wasn't internet, you weren't going to get it done mailing records around. It's really a charming story.

Fantastic interview with Shelby Singleton. I remember as a youngster listening to Johnny Halliday because of my French Canadian roots. He was quite popular in Quebec here in Canada. My father use to laugh and say " He does a good impersonation but he's no Elvis ". Johnny Halliday gained a lot of fame with the Francophones but I find his story a tragedy because he never did do his own thing or maybe he was just satisfied with his Elvis shtik.

This guy's career was amazing. Being a "child of the 70's/80's, I always thought that Harper Valley PTA was a song written for the Movie by the same title-not the other way around.

Johnny Adams “Reconsider me” has some tasty guitar licks probably played by Jerry Kennedy. This was a huge soul country style hit from 1969

Hey Joe, my good friend David Kastle is a real sweet and funny guy. He won an ACM Award with Rascal Flats for "I'm Moving On". David also managed the great pool player Minnesota Fats for the last 8 years of his life. He lives in Henderson and I'd love to see him on your show. You can find him on Facebook. You may even know him. Your channel is simply wonderful and addictive. Great interviews.

I was on the East Coast late summer '68 . WABC in NYC was playing 5 songs over and over in rotation: "Hey Jude", "Journey to the Center of Your Mind", "Born to Be Wild", "I Just Want to Get A Message to You" and "Harper Valley PTA". That was all they played.
