I love my broncolor studio lights but recently I've been accused of only making great pictures because of my equipment. Let's see what I can do with just four table top desk lamps instead!

Yes it is simple, the goal is too get volume and dimention, then also the photo can go on the warm side or cold side, i guess cause the subject is wine better to go to the warm color side, this apply to bacgrounds and lights

That is not true, histrory of photography and most iconic images of last century has been shot mostly with simple cameras, and not superexpensive or super sharp lens... What the expensive gear gives you is the speed and the coherence of results. Money in the studio pays off only when you have to take hundreds of shot like the one in the example.

@petermoeller5901
@petermoeller5901 8 лет назад
Well, the thought “if only I had better gear” actually drives the sales of the photography industry. “I need that full frame….”, “I need that 1.4…” when most people need vision and skill more than gear. The mark of a good photographer is not the gear, but the vision he has of the image and the skill to get it. Many hobbyist would not even think of having the patch of light on the background and the spot light on the label, which really help to “make” this image. Could be a full-page ad in magazine, no worries. Great work Karl, very helpful!

Like you stated, the proof is in the pudding. If you have a passion, in this case photography, and whether on a budget or not, you can adapt, overcome and improvise and "still" pull off the desired shot with items readily available around you or within a reasonable budget. Great job on the tutorial!!!

Thank you Karl! I actually stopped watching your videos because I thought the content was becoming more high end gear driven rather than photography driven. I like the basics. I shoot with Nikon D700 (x2), a D3s and 2.8 trinity (VR1 & non VR). Working on the craft rather than chasing the kit.

I've known this all along (that equipment can help, but an understanding of light is much more important) - so I didnt learn so much here. HOWEVER, thank you for making this video as visual proof that you can do this without spending tons of cash. As you said, there is no excuse (in this case, for people to blame equipment for their shots not coming out looking as they wish)
@njrivetelite
@njrivetelite 8 лет назад
I think many people especially those new to photography that think something like a Canon Rebel or Nikon D5300 is an already expensive camera and of course their eventual goal is "to go full frame" making that jump and investing a larger sum into their business. So when they see a camera like a Hasselblad H5D-50C that retails normally above $20,000 and then they look at modifiers by broncolor some being many thousands of dollars each as well they become very very overwhelmed by how much some photographers have invested and what they use to get these amazing images. So Fans of you even can watch your videos and see your results and be like.. Boom that is what I want to do and those are the results I want too but feel that what they own will just not suffice and then their next emotion is jealousy and resentment.
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio 8 лет назад
+Brian Michael I agree with you and hopefully this video made them realise that a lot can be done with just knowledge too.
@njrivetelite
@njrivetelite 8 лет назад
***** I agree, people now a days also watch all of these videos to help learn like I do. Because we all want to be great at what we do. I learned that yes, there is better equipment than what I have out there, but the knowledge I gain in photography and knowing light better and better also with knowing composition and why you should do this and or that. And knowing the equipment I already have and its limits. Will help me greatly and will help me land clients along the way until I do start getting to a level where broncolor becomes an option for me financially or Where I am at a level with clients that are paying me in the tens of thousands of dollars to where a Hasselblad becomes a tool I need and now financially a viable option. Right now, Most of my work is done on 5D MK II, with 24-70 2.8, 50 1.4 and 85 1.8. I have a set of 500 w/s monolights and few speedlights that I use with my monolights with triggers. So though I do not have the best of the best.. I can still set up a 5 light set up if I needed to.

Don't feed the trolls. Anyone with any sense knows it's nothing to do with how much the equipment costs to make a good image. Also you probably should have used a 650D or something similar, so the trolls can't then blame it on the camera you use lol

I hear ya Karl, I've been following your videos and social media for some time. There will always be a crowd of people who pay attention more to the equipment/tools than the actual creative process. But I get why you have these tools though, makes working so much easier and faster.

+Neopulse00 Yes that's right, my bron gear makes the commercial work more efficient and repeatable. There are also a greater range of modifiers and precise control plus the fast flash durations that open up a greater range of possibilities. Thanks for watching.

+Karl Taylor good video. which lens do you use for doing chocolate, watch and bottle photography? (cheap to pro grade glass).
@witcheater
@witcheater 9 лет назад
Pick a lens. Use that lens. Use one lighting setup. Use another lighting set up. Damn people, get over the rule crap. Just do something, then something different, and the something else again or anew. In the end, it is what the client wants (no matter how stupid or conventional they are). Unless you are independently wealthy, you have to comply to what the client wants. Get over you ego and just learn yourself to do the effin shot. How hard is that to understand? If you do not have a studio, and you need one, then get one... even if that means divorce. You doing fine photography is way more important than any piece of ass anyway... for all they want is your money and utility anyway.

I watched the "How to shoot red wine" tutorial with the pro studio lighting a while ago, and loved the result. This result is equally good and shot with budget lighting anyone can afford, proving that great results isn't all about about the equipment, but more about the creativity of the one behind the camera. Great tips and inspiration, I am definitively going to try out and experiment with this!

Working with non LED lights and modifiers can create a fire hazard if you are using paper as a snoot. Plus foamcoar does not like a lot of heat either. Back in my early days of photography before the pop up soft box we used to make them out of foamcoar and I used one with a 1K once and it started to catch on fire.

As a person that used a Canon 7D and a current user of a EOS T5i ... You only get amazing shots using a much better full frame camera. You WILL need a full frame camera and at least one good glass lens to achieve his quality, don't be fooled. HOWEVER, the T5i can create some hella shots but you can tell the difference.

I still do have an afternoon job. But, for my profession that I started 40-ish years ago, I understand the importance of experimentation... trying stuff for the sake of learning and not worrying if it will be a failure. For forty-plus years I have never gotten a gold star like I did in elementary school, but in my failure I learn also. I think that is the part that most are not willing to delve into... the failure. Whereas failure makes me a better industrial maintenance technician as much as success eventually had and will, failure is not sociologically acceptable... but ready (canned) answers and solutions are. I listen, but that canned crap is not for me:-)

Creating a specific situation in which you produce great results with a very minimal set up is great, but this is a very small, controlled and limited situation. There's a least one song that sounds great on a $20 guitar. Every other song will sound horrible played on that guitar, hence the gear really does make the difference.
