Product Placement In Movies And TV

Product placement is the intentional reference to a real product, in an otherwise separate piece of media, primarily for payment - whether that payment be money, or goods, or services.
So a can of Acid Sting in the hands of Vincent D'Onofrio, in his latest blockbuster, might not be product placement. In fact, it might be prominently featured- obscuring Vdoff's intense monologue. But if Coca Coca didn't pay for it to be there, or make a deal for it to be there, it's just brand exposure.

I, Robot, they literally stop the movie several times just to have people inexplicably and inappropriately comment on how sweet Will Smith's branded shoes are.
@leisti
@leisti 3 года назад
The product placement of Converse shoes at the beginning was perhaps the most jarring example I've seen in films. The star of the film, Will Smith, seemed to be barely holding down his disgust at having to act the bit where someone compliments him on the shoes.
@William-Morey-Baker
@William-Morey-Baker 3 года назад
@@leisti im not a big fan of product placement... But I honestly didn't have a big issue with it... He liked old, retro stuff.. That was part of his charactet. It made enough sense to me. @@William-Morey-Baker I think the problem is that while the shoes were retro in the 2035 setting of the story, in real life (2004) they were brand new shoes that had just come out. The film stops so that the star can advertise the Converse. If it had been a 1992 model of something it would have been less jarring.

@@martianmanhunter37 I don't think that the character trait of liking vintage things is utilized in any part of the movie or is reflected in his character in any significant way either (or at all). The use is subversive. Every product or corporation Snyder places in Man of Steel, Snyder destroys. IHOP: destroyed. Nikon: destroyed. 7-11: destroyed. Product placement is a fact of life. It’s a time-tested way - along with distribution sales, stock/bind sales, pre-broadcast sales, and tax credits - for studios to finance their films. You didn’t think guys like MGM and Warner Bros. foot the bill entirely with their own money, did you? But I digress. It all depends on how it’s done. Showcasing a product in a movie and having characters shill for a product in a movie are two different things.

My personal favourite is them mentioning Krispy Kreme like 5 billion times in the "new" Power Rangers movie. "It's a Krispy Kreme" "Krispy Kreme?" "Krispy Kreme? This is a special place?" "Very special" "It must be...", not even joking that is an actual bit of dialogue in the movie. Then the entire finale is them rushing to Krispy Kreme to stop Rita, but she gets there first and eats some donuts. The movie was essentially just a long-ass Krispy Kreme commercial, because everything else about it was forgettable.

The whole point of advertisement isn't too sell you something at that moment but to sell you the idea of that product/brand in the future. Pretty much it comes down to manipulation of people's minds to sell you an idea and not a product.

A quick note on Blade Runner. Back then in the 80's, Coca Cola's tag was 'the real thing' and TDK's tag was 'perfect replication every time'... which ties into the themes of Blade Runner perfectly... I don't know for sure if it was intentional but would like to think it was...

Korean Drama can be extreme in this regard. Eg "The King: Eternal Monarch" feels more like a vehicle for product placement than entertainment. Clearly it is a way to get funding, but the PP feels more important than anything else in the series. I recommend looking it up here on YT because it's beyond satire. On the other side you have "Signal", which again needs them, but places them perfectly between major acts in such a way it becomes surrealistic - a scene where the hero buys a subway and nothing else. It's a nod, yes it is exactly what you think. It's honest, and actually less distracting than an advertisement.

WELCOME BACK! It's great to see one of your videos again. Y'know the RU-vid algorithm has _plenty_ of problems, but sometimes it does work. Just now your video popped up on my home page as a suggestion, so I watched it. Otherwise it might've been a while before I realized you had something new out. So, product placement. As you said it's really more about brand recognition. The days when someone would see James Arness smoking and decide that what Marshal Dillon liked was good enough for them are long past. Today we're so overexposed the game has changed to near subliminal reinforcement. They put actual brands in TV shows and movies just to remind us that they still exist, and hope that when we do buy something and don't really care about one product over another, the simple familiarity that comes from seeing their brand more often will carry the day. Does this actually work? I don't think anyone knows.

imo sometimes product placement can be used as something to ground you in the universe, like in Blade Runner Everything looks and feels different but it's also the same and oh look Atari somehow managed to survive til then

but like I'm also so desensitized to ads that 99.9% of them fly over my head while watching any type of media so I don't really give a shit anymore about em

There's a classical piece of music that I can't enjoy because someone thought it would be genius to make a jingle out of it "mufflers, tailpipes, we got everything you need" 20 years ago. Now to listen to this piece the jingle plays in my head and there is no joy. Back then I never muted ads and I would stick around to watch them all, today it's the opposite.

@@robbyg6265 The Brave browser is a browser that's identical to Chrome except it's faster and automatically blocks ads. As far as I know, ads can't be blocked on mobile, sadly.

It's always great to see Georg upload a new video. Also, the quality of the actual video is fantastic, with the lights and all. It has that by the fireplace feel to it. I remember being a kid and our teacher told us that whenever James Bond jumps into a vehicle, the brand logo is always facing the camera. After that I started seeing obvious brand logos in all the major Hollywood films. Me and my friends made fun of Terminator 3, if my memory serves me, because the blatant product placement was "so obvious" to us. Boy, if only we could've seen in the future and the abysmal Adam Sandler film Jack and Jill. It's like a fictional film in a dystopian book or something.

I'm never bothered by product placement or even notice it. There's product placement of brand names all around us in real life and in our homes. Perfectly realistic to be in a movie.

still think the best was the Pepsi commercials and the bright Mountain Dew machine in in the background of the Raymond Hessel scene in Fight Club was the best use of product placement.
