In this Product Review video, I take you through my experience with the Redgrass Everlasting Wet Palette. It's a well made product that certainly does what it says on the tin, but it also comes with a fairly significant price tag. Hope you enjoy!

I've been using the smaller one since they came out, I think I paid a bit less with a preorder discount. I've had it wet the whole time so for like 4-5 months and there's no mold at all even though I've used just tap water. I have a limited space, so the smaller one is suitable. I'm extremely happy with the purchase and the 2 foams and 100 sheets of paper will last me most likely like 2 years. I've used 5 papers so far, since I always work on one project continuously so I don't need to mix a huge number of colours. The paints stay usable for days, so I can mix a colour and use it for several evenings. Only caveat for that is that if you put too much water in, it will get wicked into the paints and make them unusable and it's sometimes a bit challenging to know if you've put too much. Overall I think it's easily worth the investment, since it will last you years. I highly recommend it!

My only regret with mine is buying the small one instead of the big one. Even if I don't see any room to fit it anywhere in my hobby space, I would have cleared some space. The fact that I don't have to worry about anything to go wrong versus the homemade solution is totally worth the money to me. I've so little time to paint that I don't want to spend some fiddling with a palette that doesn't do its job perfectly. But I can see why some don't want to spend so much money on a palette, this is clearly a premium product made for a niche market.

Agreed on all points and I will say I have enjoyed the larger one.

2 questions for you, if you don't mind Vince: 1. How does this paper compare to parchment paper? I find parchment paper wrinkles up shortly after being put on the sponge and you have to take it off and flatten it out again. Does this paper do the same? 2. I find that parchment paper works perfectly for letting the water through at a good pace for a couple hours, but the paint does get watery (like a glaze) after a day of sitting there. Does this paper do that as well? Excellent review btw - I'll likely get one ;)
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
I haven't seen much wrinkling, I smooth it out a little at the edges, but once it's down, it stays down, largely because it's cut to size pretty effectively. Yes, I still see the watery effect depending on a) the type of paint and b) the amount of water I leave in there when I seal up the palette. Glad you enjoyed and happy to help.

I find that just laying the paper on the sponge and leaving it works fine. The paper rolls up but after a few seconds unrolls and lays flat with no wrinkles and no worries.

Thanks for this vid Vince. Have only been painting for a few week now, but with my OCD find that this is the perfect solution for me. Got the Studio XL, and with 3 wavy's everything is in one small space. No issues so far with odour or staining of sponge thingy. Absolute heaven.

Purchased. Have been generally happy with my own solution (big flat, low walls, cut foam and a stack of measured and guillotine cut paper).... buuttttttttt, I live in Australia and painting this summer has been a nightmare. I am having to refill the wet pallet daily and even multiple times a day during longer painting sessions. Better quality foam with a better fitting lid will go a long way to keeping my paint mixes happy, if it works out as I expect the time I save having to remix paint will be worth it alone. (seriously though, with the dry temps and heat atm even moderate retardant mediums like vallejo glaze medium aren't keeping the paint wet for very long)

I get it, my basement is very dry and even this palette dries out with the water around it over several hours, that being said, the sponge is awesome and it holds water for a long time and keeps the paints wet.

I loved mine. The biggest thing is that mine's been damp now for more than two months....it has grown no microbes. Unlike previous wet pallets where I'd have to dry it out and clean it almost daily to prevent growths. The thing is, I've used the other brand of wet pallets and all grew mold. This is the only one that doesn't. That alone is worth the money.

Vince, great video. Thanks for doing the reviews the way you do. Reminds me of the days of watching consumer reports and finding out that commercial that got you ready to buy isn't quite (or even close) to what their testing found. As for this product and your review I agree its a use/investment ratio more than a functionality decision.

Yep. 100%. Thanks on the consumer reports comment, that's a heck of a compliment. I think with this, it does exactly what it says, there isn't really anything that is wrong per se, it's just a question of whether you think that functionality is worth the price tag.

I have been using it for about two months I guess. I was part of the Kickstarter thing. I have had no mold issues yet. So I can back that fact. I think it could be deeper -- storing more water -- so it would have to be refilled less often.
@VinceVenturella

I noticed that as well (on the depth). It's interesting, because on one hand, I like that I can easily control the water level without having tons of standing water, but it does mean I put a little water in more regularly.

Do you still use the redgrass paper today or did you settle on something better? I don't know if i'm doing something wrong and you're supposed to completely drown it when applying, but just putting the paper on the (to the brim) wet sponge and putting some vallejo model color on it, it doesn't take long to see it dry out, specially if you mix the color so it's not a big blob but a more thin layer. After good 30 minutes to an hour, the only way you can get the color back is by reviving it with water and mixing to get it back somewhat. Just checking if this is your experience as well.

I use the Examplar now from Game Envy, I love it, though this is fine, the key in that case is likely to double stack the sponges, sounds like you have a dry environment.

Been waiting for this one! I feel a bit more vindicated in backing the kickstarter :) I got the Studo XL one as well which honestly is maybe a bit too big for me, but it's working out well. I've had the same bit of paper on it for several weeks now (I don't paint as much as I'd like) and have only topped it up twice. And with the constant AC going here it gets pretty dry as well. The cost is definitely a hurdle; I opted for it because I saw it as an investment in a well-made tool that worked out of the box, no fuss.

They sell sponge replacements (they do now anyhow, not sure about 3 years ago), so someone could always buy a sponge and some sheets. But for the smaller size, it's almost as expensive as just buying the pallet, so I wouldn't recommend it for the LITE.

He says he needs the big one but look at all that unused space. The painter lite version is smaller but only about by a 1/3rd and it's half the cost. That's what I went with and I spread out several colors and mixes at once as he does and almost never run into space problems. It also fits my modest space for hobbies better. I do run into issues of space on occasion when I do a bigger project but I solved that by buying a second painter lite. The two smaller footprints still fit my modest space better than one big one would and when I don't need all of that real estate I don't need to have it out.

Excellent straight forward review. I have the smaller palette and wish I got the larger one. Might do that eventually but hey... Realise I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm just starting out with my painting and got this as my first palette after reading the recommendations. However one thing that I'm not entirely certain on, that I hear a lot of people have differing thoughts on, is whether or not it is required to dilute your paints while using a wet palette. Just curious how you go about that, do you mix a bit of water in with the paint once on the palette as if you were using a regular dry one, or do you simply let the water of the wet palette dilute it? Thanks :)

@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
@@Zanthulu Sort of, in general, you still want to have a moist (not wet) brush. But you may need to sometimes add a little water to get smooth and flowing paint depending on the individual brand/color. Why do people keep questioning the sponge? It looks like the wet chamoise you can find that’s used in cleaning cars. I’ve ordered one and will review when it arrives. I've been using the smaller one for...gosh, since right after the kickstarter? And it's been really good - 'it does what it says on the box' is a strong descriptor. My only complaints after SO much painting, are that as the sponge has aged, it now dries out in extremely unpredictable ways, and once the bottom layer of paint dries, the functionality of the palette disappears. That's new to the last few months, and is bothersome. The second is that the batch of papers I'm working on, right now, disintegrate under blending. I mix a lot of paint on my palette, and the thing I loved about this was how long I was able to work with colors I'd been building through their highlights or shadows - but the current batch slowly comes apart, and tiny little fibers, almost like little hairs, start showing up on my minis. Maddening if I dont catch them right away, and its ruined some work. The inconsistency of the paper packs is a big bummer. I know they just redesigned, apparently, but as you mention, the cost being what it is, I can't imagine going in, again, even though I like the thing, and think its proven itself. It's just a lot of money.

The sponge is horrendous. I've been using it for a year, trying to get used to it, but it really ruined my paint experience for that time. The consistency of the paint would go all over the place and it feels like this has to do with the water level. Too much and paint overflows with water, too little and it dries as if using a dry pallete. I was constantly adding new paint or water to the mix. Overall a horrible experience. Right on Vince, good review. Advocating for people to use the tupperware/sponge to save money probably won't earn you any sponsorships, but at least your opinions can be trusted!

To be fair, Redgrass even tell you how to make your own wet palette on their website. So kudos to Redgrass for doing that as well.

Yes, it's a big thing for me to try to give the basic story and I stay away from trying to eer be too hyperbolic about it. :)

That is a shame it's so expensive. I've been using the masterson one, but I keep having problems with the parchment paper drying so fast and my paints drying or it's too wet and the paints water down too much.
@VinceVenturella

Yes, I will say this is a little easier to control with the sponge in this one, but the price is significant for sure.

Beware of Redgrass! I had a v1 Studio XL for quite a while but just pulled it out and started using it about a month ago. There was a strong petroleum smell coming off it that lessened over time. However, within a month the seal or gasket they used in the lid started rotting/deteriorating, almost ‘melting’. I’ll note it appears they no longer use a gasket in newer versions? Anyway, I contacted their “customer service”. At first they tried to blame it on me cleaning it with chemical products. I’ve never used anything but water. Then I sent pics of the lid with rotting seal and the box it came in. He actually tried to claim that wasn’t a Redgrass Palette lid!? Avoid this company at all costs.

What is the difference betwhen this and the mastersons wet palette?

I think Miniac also covered it and talked bout the antifungal element in the sponge.

The Redgrass is just overall a much more well designed product. From performance to design and aesthetics- everything is very high quality and more durable; the sponge seems like it has a much longer lease on life than the Mastersons sponge. If I had any complaint it would be that I wish the sponge was just a mil or two thicker. Yes, it's pricey, but if the consistency of your painting is important to you and you're able to appreciate a quality product, it's worth it.

Well I think this has been covered below, Luke breaks it down well. The sponge is probably the biggest difference, as it is the biggest single quality change. It has a rally nice texture, holds liquid evenly and is naturally anti-microbial. The construction of the box itself it also better, but again. there is nothing wrong with a homemade or a masterson. They all can work perfectly well. There is a large amount of personal taste, evaluation of whether you think it's worth it to pay a fairly decent chunk of change for sort of the best version of a thing (that doesn't make the others bad, again, they can all be good).

Wait, hold up! “Two weeks, almost 100 hours of painting...”. Do you actually paint 7 hours a day? Somehow I assumed you had a hobby, not full time employment/retirement! Do you really paint 7hrs a day?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
On average? Sure. But not in that way. So I paint about 4-5 hours Sunday through Thursday, usually getting about 20-25 hours in over that time. Then Friday and Saturday I paint between 16-20 hours on each of those days. I don't sleep much and I don't do anything else. Brandon is correct. I don't play video games, I don't have kids. Other than work (which I do about 50-60 hours a week) and spending a time with the wife, I don't really do anything else (I play a game of AoS each week at my house, so that's about 3 hours). I don't sleep much, and on Friday night I will sleep maybe 3 or 4 hours. So I will paint until 4AM friday night, get up around 8 or 9 AM and paint until 4AM Saturday night.
