A simple ice solution for a cooler is to freeze water bottles and use them. They tend to last longer and doesn't get everything wet. Then you can use them to drink.

We do a cross country trip from Las Vegas to the east coast every summer. One of the first things I bought was a refrigerator just like this though a different brand. I stock up with cases of drinks at Costco and fill the fridge as needed. Saves a lot of money!! They sell 12 volt splitters so you can use several car cigarette plugs at the same time. I also bought extended wires as I have a 12v plug in back of my minivan. My back plug is always on. In your truck look in the back or middle compartment for a another plug that is always on eliminating leaving the key in the car issue.

@@krisg3984 All of these refers have a power cutoff that stops the refer from draining the battery below a safe level, so that the car will still start, listen to her description she tells you that. These run at 40 watts max, about 1/4 of what a small laptop uses, so the danger is that the food will spoil, so having a solar battery pack like she has is the best thing to run it on at night especially if you have steaks or hamburger in the refer, although the battery pack she has is very small I would recommend one at least twice that size.

You can still do this with these 12v fridges and that keeps the compressor from running as much making your solar generator last longer per charge. I do that when I know I will want cold drinking water at some point as once they melt they are no longer helping but are just fine for hydrating. I usually put four of the half liter (16.9 oz) ones in there when I leave and once they are melted they are fair game to drink. Also late in the trip if you run out of juice in your generator you can use bag ice to hold longer. They become normal coolers without power though not as insulated as a Yeti in most cases.

That is a pretty cool frig you got there. I have the other more expensive one. I use it in freezer mode to keep my water bottles frozen. I rotate the frozen water bottles in my ice chest to keep drinks and veggies cold. When not sleeping I cover the frig and ice chest with all my blankets and sleeping bag for extra insulation. It really helps. Like having 6 inches of extra insulation around your ice chest. Don't cover the vents. I have a spare power supply too (like a jackery) I use when the car isn't moving. You can unplug the frig to use your signal booster, just plug it back in when your done. The ice won't melt that fast with all the blankets and sleeping bags keeping things cold. Another tip is to start out with all your water bottles already frozen to begin with.

You NEVER want to run stuff off the car’s cigarette lighter for long periods of time. Car batteries are designed to put out a burst of power for a short time, like starting the engine. RV batteries put out below-max power for long stretches of time. So the car battery is a flasbulb and RV batteries, and Jackery are like a flashlight. Different design for different uses. IMHO: Update your Jackery and bring Solar Panels.

A lot of RVs have a dedicated 12 volt accessory plug that is always hot. Your local handyman/mechanic can add one, pretty cheap. Your sister could do it. All you need is the plug, 14 gauge wire, and a 20 amp inline fuse holder. And a step drill bit to drill a hole to mount the plug. Put it some place, where you can pop off a inside panel or mount in the dash, were you can reach under and reach the back. Connect it to a hot wire and a ground, under the dash, or run the wire to the battery.
@markpashia7067

Bad idea. RVs have been designed for that with extra house batteries and much larger alternator on the engine to accomidate that sort of thing. Her SUV does not have all that.
@mgeldern
@mgeldern 2 года назад
Get an extra sealed, lead-acid battery 24 amp-hour or larger and hardwire it into your existing car battery and alternator charging circuit. This will provide all the full-time power you need. Just anchor it down somewhere in the vehicle and wire it up with some heavy-duty copper conductor wire. This extension battery circuit should have it's its own voltage regulator to avoid over-charging. This would be a simple addition that any automotive electrical tech could do for you.

I'd go with a Lithium-Iron-Phosphate battery (like battleborn). They are expensive., but you can keep them safely INSIDE your vehicle. Lead-acid needs to be outside because charging puts off Hydrogen. LifePo4 are also a LOT lighter and you can actually use almost 100% of battery (unlike lead-acid where you should only use 50% or risk greatly reducing the number of cycles you will get out of the battery). Also LION are great for Solar. They can take a huge amount of charging current (take power in while the sun is shining). Lead-acid has several different charging cycles which reduce how much charging they will take at later cycles.
@mgeldern
@mgeldern 2 года назад
@@SerendipitySue That is why I recommended a "sealed" battery (which even most car batteries sold today are). The type I am referring to are UPS batteries which I have backing up all the electronics in my home and are safe and relatively cheap. Ask Boeing or Tesla about the safety of Lithium-Ion batteries!
@SerendipitySue
@SerendipitySue 2 года назад
@@mgeldern Yes Sealed Lead Acid batteries are considered safe to use in side. Lithium Iron Phosphate are much safer, but heavier than the LION batteries. They are becoming the standard in RV's.

@markpashia7067
@markpashia7067 2 года назад
I do that when solar generator is fully charged but if it needs charging, Sarah is doing it correctly as it will power the fridge and charge the jackery with excess and fully send charge to jackery when compressor not running. If you need to charge the generator she is absolutely doing it correct. when car is off, solar is the best answer and use the same way becaues the Jackery has PASS THROUGH CHARGING that will go to appliance first and extra will go to battery.

Hi Sarah. You asked about the 12v plug in the Toyota. Some cars and trucks have a 12v power port which is powered up all the time. My 04 PT Cruiser has one, along with one that is powered on with the keys. My F150 King Ranch has 2 power ports hot all the time, along with 1 controlled by the ignition. It also has a 120v ac outlet (400watt) powered only when the engine is running. The truck will also shut down all the outlets if battery voltages drop below a certain level.😍 I also wanted to say that you are an inspiration to all of us to get out and explore our country.🤗

With all the driving you do, you might want to look into an additional voltage generator added into your engine compartment. While driving it would charge everything, but you'll also have to add an additional battery to achieve that.
@michaelterrell

They haven't used generators in cars since 1963. They use Alternators, with built in rectifiers for higher efficiency and a much lower failure rate. There are also dual battery charging systems which use two high current Schottky Diodes to isolate the batteries from each other. Then the auxiliary battery can be almost completely discharged and the vehicle will still start with no problem. I installed some of these on paddle boats at an amusement park in the early '70s. so the tube based sound system could keep running while the engines weren't.

One thing to remember SJ, is if using the car's battery (not the Jackery) you 'could' be stuck way out in the back country with a non-starting car! As time moves forward, you'll get use to just how many days you can camp with the power you have with you, and yes solar would work well or help keep the battery/Jackery charged. But, if you decided to go hiking, I don't know if you'd want to keep the solar panels out, as they may be gone upon your return! I know it comes down to 'room' but some kind of a generator might be helpful, but then you need to carry, and store gas, so there is always a trade off. Lucky you aren't in the Pacific Northwest like us, where it can rain for a week without stopping every now and then! Thanks for the video on your fridge, as I very much enjoy your content, and check it out when time allows! Stay safe!!

Careful on the splitters. Those plugs are rated really low (around fifty watts per car plug), so you have to watch the total draw on the system and if you must replace the car battery I highly recommend going with the expensive AGM ones. A little bit more cost but much better power for electronics in these things. Lead/acid cheap car batteries can have problems with the drain and charging these things put on them. I would not replace them if good, but when mine went bad I just made sure to upgrade, not just replace.

Since you're going to continue to camp alone (which, I bet is BLISS!!!!) go ahead and take those both out. You'll gain a LOT of extra room. That fridge looks just PERFECT for you and your needs! Good to know that it works great with your Jackery, you may wanna think about getting a bigger one now, OT better yet, invest in a bit of solar. Putting up solar panels, will totally prolong your Jackery battery for a long time! Great job!!!
@markpashia7067
@markpashia7067 2 года назад
You are doing it correct in that you should be charging/pass through use when the car is running. When not running and you are in camp, use the solar to charge the same way. The fridge will probably use most of the production either way when it is running, but you will be charging with all the input when compressor is off. One other thing I did was get a white towel to cover it when I can to reflect any sun shining on it and I even use my black out panel in the side window when that is in full sun at camp. All the heat you can keep off of it the better, just do not cover the compressor vents with the towel. Keeping the sun off of it and the car as cool as you can with windows down helps it run the compressor less often making your Jackery go farther on a charge. I use bug screens for the open windows. I have a larger solar generator unit from another brand and other brand of fridge but same thing, extend it as far as you can with common sense. Don't open it just to look and close it as fast as you can to keep heat out and cool in. PS if taking a hike you just need to think about security. I put away solar panels and close the windows to keep honest people honest. A thief will break a window so you cannot stop all but you get it.

HI there, I also have one of those 12 Volt Fridges. Fortunately the 12 Volt power source in my truck is hot all the time. I don't use the freezer feature. I don't want to have to wait for something to thaw out before I eat. And I don't need to make ice at all. When I travel with the Fridge I place it on the right front seat of my truck. When towing my camper I use a rear-view camera. I also have to have that plugged into a 12 volt source. So I got one of those adapters that has 3 ports available to plug things into. In your case, you could re-wire your cigar plug to a 12 volt power source that is hot all the time. Maybe run a new wire directly from the battery. Just be sure to install a fuse for protection. There is a learning curve on anything new. Once I'm at my camp site, I put the Fridge in the camper and plug it in.

@@pdelgado24 I guess you're probably correct. I'm new to this and I'm in the process of getting a battery and a solar panel and from what I have found out Jackery is not a good choice. And the one she has doesn't have much power anyway.

Hi Sarah, I would Not Recommend that you leave your ignition switch turned on with the engine off in order to keep the Cigar lighter port powered to run the fridge, doing so can damage the ignition system and will drain your four runners battery, good chance you will need a tow to a repair shop before it will run again. Take care and be safe pretty lady😊

Wonder Hussey, should buy one of those carriers that strap on top of your car and then you can put most of your stuff in that. And you will have lots more room for inside your car

I have a ARB-Zero 47Qt which all those features. I sleep with a fan on at home and this fridge is quieter. I use a FlexoPower 444 to power the ARB. The 444 is fully charged before my trip, plug the 444 into the car 12v plug and the ARB plugs in to the 444. It's a better fridge than the one in my rig, but too large. Your work around for the we-boost is: Use the car 12v plug and leave the Bouge plugged into the Jackery. In all do respect: If your cell signal is that low you're not going to be binge calling your followers, hey you never call me anyway. Remember when I mentioned you were the best producer on YT, as well pretty darn capable with the camera on-a-stick. That still holds true. The first several minutes while you did the SJ pirouettes you got significant flare on each turn, please be careful, there's good flare and bad (feedback) flare, just saying. Might not be a bad idea to take the flippen solar panels - Really! ps I still have beer, LOL. If you can't be good be careful... Safe travels buddy!

Remove the back seat and plywood the area to level. So you get some extra storage space. Get a 25-pound Honda EU-1000 generator to charge battery's. I car-camp in a 1994 Ford Escort wagon with all that stuff. So yea, you have tons of room. Run a battery direct wire to the cabin area.

Actually you could have made your own “block” ice….a milk bottle frozen in your own freezer. But this cooler is very cool!!that is definitely going to change the scope of things. And you have the Jakery to keep it charged…..your set!! I have no doubt you will work out the “bugs” in space and arrangement…….it’s going to be epic at Burning Man!!

You could plug the fridge in to the car outlet while driving around...and once you get settled in camping, use the Jackery. I'm thinking you can plug the solar panels into the Jackery and "float charge" it while the fridge is plugged in too. The panels might not run the fridge by themselves, they could bring the charge back up on the Jackery between run cycles of the fridge. That fridge draws a pretty puny amount from the power source if the compressor isn't running. Oh...and the secret to getting the most out of those type fridges is to leave them closed as much as you can. But you probably already new that. Anyway, looks like Bouge is onto something there. That unit beats hell out of swiping a ThermoKing unit off a semi trailer and putting it on your rig. Glad Bouge reached out to you. That looks like it'll work pretty good for you. And don't worry about the "learning curve". You're up to it. Love. Thanks for the heads up on the BougeRV fridge. By the way, a compressor type fridge beat the Peltier Junction types in super hot areas. Solid state isn't always the best way to go...and BougeRV just proved here.

Don't leave your key on for the Refrigerator. If you want to power something when the key is off have a fused power plug installed direct to the car battery or to the fuse block.

Old school I used to make it 5-7 days on block ice .The trick .Zip lock bag and keep the seal out of the water for the food you want really cold meats Ect and drinks on the bottom in the melted ice water 33 degrees and make some kind of shelf to keep the other stuff up out of the water and you have a little extra water for what ever you need like a wet damp cool down rag or washing some thing .I do like the idea of solar running the frig if it was more then 7 days .Ice is nice .

21:03 I would suggest you find 3 12v 100 watt panels (the regular aluminum frame kind, non flexible.) And attach them onto the roof of your vehicle. Wire two in parallel for the Jackery and fridge. Oversize the system so you can be assured to produce at least 35 watts even in partial shade or on cloudy days. And the second wire up by itself through the cheapest PWM controller you can find directly into your truck battery, just to keep it topped off, and for a simple ready to use backup, in case the other system fails.

Rotate your ignition key backwards to accessory mode. Be careful because once a car battery discharges to below 12 volts it may not crank.

New vehicles do not have that feature. But most mechanics I have talked to say that turning the key forward to run without starting is not an issue anymore as long as you do not run the battery down. Modern cars usually have a timer though and will shut off after a time so do not count on even that. You would have to run the motor all night to keep the socket hot and that would be crazy.

Hi. I have a suggestion or two for you. Instead of putting the straps over the top, run them through the handles so you’ll have access to the inside plus in case you forget to tighten it down it’ll still hold it down and in place. If you have two 12 volt plugs coming from the rover you can use one for the fridge and one for the jackery while driving. I think it would recharge faster without the fridge in it. Then while parked plug the fridge into the jackery. At 33 watts it should last quite a while until it shuts itself off. If you use the jackery first then you could use the vehicle battery for a while prior to picking up and leaving the area. If all you had was bottled water in the fridge you could set it near 65° while you were exploring so you wouldn’t return to hot water when you’d like to have something cool to drink. Hope this helps. Btw, it’s my position that dieting is overrated. 😉 Have fun out there!

Stop by any truck stop and get a splitter for your cigarette lighter plug. Then your jackery would get a full charge without running the fridge. When you get to where you are going, plug it in the jackery so you can use your weboost and BougeRV fridge at the same time.

Hey Wonder hussy I have a suggestion for you with your refrigerator next time you go out on the road take your solar panel and possibly you can use the zip ties and zip tie it to the roof and that way you can plug in your refrigerator and when you go out exploring it'll still be charging the refrigerator for you hopefully this helps you out that's if you have the roof racks

Hi Sarah Jane..I know you don`t read comments much BUT..have you considered a sturdy roof-rack and then get a friend to design & make a folding frame which is fixed to the roof-rack for the solar panels, all can be folded back after use..just a thought..Love your vids..great work ..Cheers.

Some vehicles have two positions for the cigar lighter fuse. Put in one way it only powers the outlet with the ignition on. In the second position it powers the outlet all the time. Pull the fuse and have a look where the fuse was. If there are three terminals, you can move the fuse to change modes.

You Can buy Blue Ice Packs & sheets freeze them then put them in the ice chest. They don't make a mess. I freeze my meat before a trip so it take a few days to thaw out in the Ice chest. Yah be care & not drain your car battery. Maybe have a backup battery that charges of your car generator while driving? Buy portable Solar cells to run it when you are parked during the day?

I'll have to go check their site. The only thing I'd like to see is a version where the fridge/freezer are reversed. I need very little space in a freezer and much more in the fridge, so this model is backwards for me. You're probably better off running it off the portable supply than the cars battery. It would suck to get ready to drive the next day and find you don't have enough juice left to turn the engine over. :-) Yep, plan on bringing the solar panels on the next trip.

Once upon a long time ago I had a 12 volt refrigerator box called a Koolatron. It would run my truck battery flat in 8 or 10 hours. I accommodated this inconvenience by leaving it home most of the time. Eventually one of my kids took it away and made my life simpler.

You can run a dual car battery system. You may need to upgrade your alternator to handle charging both batteries at the same time. The dual battery system will use the secondary battery to run the refrig. U can also tie the jackery to the second battery to charge and also run the refrig.
