There was a time when I was listening to high end audio and taking great care in making good coffee. All the audio shops served nespresso, and all the coffee temples used single Bluetooth speakers or Sonos. The point being... we obsess about the thing we love and just want the other stuff to work. Now I’m into cycling and the mechanics have tool collections that look like jewels and while we chat there is some off brand capsule with mono mp3’s in the background.

Ahhh, Nespresso. I spent a holiday season working the stockroom at an upscale household goods store. Our break room had both Keurig and Nespresso machines, plus every variety of capsule for both. I very quickly discovered that, if you were restricted to pod coffee and nothing else, Nespresso is the least awful. I used my employee discount to buy an Aeropress.

I wish I could just go into a store and buy an aeropress, or any non garbage coffee equipment for that matter. Instead of having to buy online, pay massive shipping and wait a month for it to get to me.

@@ubertoby Oh, I know ... I'm not an espresso drinker. I made mock Americanos with my Aeropress - brewed it the usual way then diluted it to taste with hot water. I don't consider Nespresso to be espresso either, and I always set the machine to Lungo.

The point about using the Nespresso capsules is the construction of these machines (Nespresso machines included). There are little "knives" in the machine that puncture the bottom of the capsules. If you use aluminium capsules the knives will sharpen themselves by cutting through the metal. With plastic pods this won't happen so the knives will get blunt in the end and the machine can fail. That's why it always advised to use the original Nespresso capsules.

I have this for about 2 years. Slowly falling apart like the rubber around the cup, I must say I still appreciate it as otherwise I would be drinking horrible soluble coffee at work! Can confirm that it does about 3 cups from cold and numerous using hot water. Am just about to try refillable pods as do not like the waste and quality of the ready assembled coffee.

This seems to me like the last option of many for "camping coffee". Teabag style, aeropress, percolators, and even instant all seem like better options for using with a camp stove.

So, having seen this review, I thought it would be the ideal thing for me every day as I drive to and from customers (50,000 miles per year).My company pays a set rate of subsistence allowance every day, depending on whether you have travelled for five hours, 10 hours or overnight; this is never enough for breakfast, coffee ,lunch ,coffee ,evening meal, and perhaps a beer. This little gadget, is under £100, saves me a fortune! I now have a very convenient way of making coffee on the go! thanks for the review. Aj

@@JasperJanssen , it has been over 2 yrs, and it has worked flawlessly! Highly recommended, BUT…. must use original Nespresso capsules, as aftermarket have thicker aluminium pods that don’t pierce fully! Nespresso are much thinner than you would imagine…. And tbh, the coffee is so much better 😬

Brilliant! You are so entertaining, I'll have to watch more of your clips. Your pod toss says it all! If I WAS camping or traveling I'd take an Aeropress and hand grinder with my stove and then I'd have a more volume to sip and warm myself while enjoying the view, or the fire, or etc., etc. Thanks again for the chuckle.

Yep. That's exactly the way I go backpacking, too. Works like a charm and needs no batteries, and the coffee tastes better, and you can make a lot more per cup than with a pod (not to mention needing to then tote it out of the woods as dead weight that is heavier (!) on the way home than on the way out, due to water inside).

Agreed. I'm taking my stove anyway to make food, so why not coffee? I know James hates preground coffee, but grinding enough for a couple of days is fine, and makes life easier.

James I have had the Lavazza version called Espressgo in my car for 3 years or so and it does fill a gap when the espresso craving comes. It can only be plugged into the car socket though but makes espresso in 90 seconds using cold water. As others mention one of Maxwell's capsules would be the true bench test.

I have the same thing, I thought I was the only one in the world, hehe. Mine sometimes refuses to work in hot weather but makes a fine cup on the go. I also rate Lavazza a bit better than nespresso, even if it can't compete with fresh beans. My largest complaint is that you can't use plug it into the wall, which would have made it a lot more useful for me when visiting friends and family without an espresso machine. Skipping to the car after meals is not very polite.

The espressgo is a rebrand of the handpresso for cars. I have the Nespresso version of the handpresso auto and am curious how it compares in quality. It seems like mine is better built, but has less features than this one.

Every once in a while there is a Nespresso pod that is drinkable for someone who likes espresso. Sure, it’s mediocre at best, but if I am in a hotel or restaurant or in a conference room and there is no proper espresso machine, then I am happy to see a Nespresso machine, especially if Kazaar or Napoli pods are available.

Nespresso has its place, it makes easy and quick espresso at home without much fuss. The machines last a long time, We’ve had ours over 10 years. I like to spend the weekend making a nice pour over but sometimes you need something quick and hassle free to grab in the morning.

Honestly, for traveling, I'd get something exactly like this. No, I won't drink kingly coffee for a week, but I won't have to worry about loose coffee, I could make it at any conference or hotel, and maintenance is minimal. Though it'd probably be best to get caffeine chews or something at that point.

I do think that his answer would be that the problem with nespresso isn't only with the coffee quality but also how the coffee machine works and treats your coffee. And also, if you're willing to put your own coffee every time you want one into a reusable pod, cleaning it, grind your coffee, etc. Why not just take another way to make coffee ? The irony is that I'm actually using reusable pods on my nespresso machine. 'cause it was a gift from my parents.

I love this idea! maybe you could use tubes for blood for coffee? the vacuum could force the coffee through a filter in the needle. basically, the serial killer version of a hario syphon

Never understood the attraction of these pods. Give me a bag of beans any day. As for camping, hand grinder and a Clever Dripper, or an Aeropress. Still good coffee and nothing to break or charge.

Andy Gait I totally agree. I played a lot with my Aeropress, but I like all kinds of brewing methods, and I've recently bought a Handpresso to get an espresso in the wild. No battery, freshly ground coffee beans, real crema, a very good surprise for me that I even use at home (I haven't invested yet in an espresso machine).

Much less stuff to break when you don't even use a grinder. I just go for ground coffee and pourover stuff. I mean, kettle and funnel don't have any mechanical moving piece.

To be frank when this phenomenon happens it's some central company in China that came up with it and they just sell the design to various companies and contract out the manufacturing. It's all the same.

In some cases, that's true, although there are times when companies spend lots of money and time on R&D to bring a unique product to market only to have it copied. This happened with Wacaco's Minipresso. The retail price of the original incorporates some of the expense of developing the product. The copies skip this phase and can sell the same product way cheaper at profit.

Would love to hear your take on the Nanopresso. Hand pump travel expresso machine. No batteries, no capsule. I have one but can't quite decide yet. But any espresso when travelling is better than none.

I encountered the first "high end" Nespresso store in Bordeaux. So funny. They had such a posh, elite condescension, ostensibly due to the high quality of their coffee. Made me laugh.

I'm confused... for what I've seen before, your expression at the end of the video is really similar to that you did when reviewing the CLR Coffee burned expensive water... Oh James that review is the best! So, was that bad the pod you tried? I'm really curious about your thoughts on Nespresso, in a previous video I asked you something similar, I asked if you think Nespresso, as is today, is somehow considered, by you, as Specialty Coffee... Personally I don't think so, I would like to know what you think about it.

The good thing about nespresso pods - especially compared to those flat paper teabag style coffee pads for philips Senseo - is that the ground coffee is individually sealed airtight. But, well, James is... not into vacuum sealed pre-ground that’s been sat for a while.

I don't understand what would be technically hard about a portable electric grinder. Li-polymer can deliver tens of amps easily. You could grind coffee on the plane, on a Starbucks, etc.

This is gold.... Great review. I have a need for an kind of mobile Espresso solution, currently my choice would a gas powered Faema faemina or such... Doesn't know if that device will suit my needs. Battery powered Grinder, that would be nice, meanwhile an inverter will do to power the grinder...

How about an AeroPress plus a nested Porlex Mini grinder? Works for me. You can even grab a metal filter for the AeroPress is you are concerned about not having enough paper filters for a lengthy trip.

As this is now out of stock I have bought the CONQUECO Portable Coffee Maker - 12V Travel Espresso Machine 'lookalike'. But on receipt my chosen capsules Nespresso 'compatible' don't allow the cap to fit! I even then bought Nespresso original line and neither do they fit. Has anyone else experienced this?
