Right now I am in the boatyard doing a big job on the new boat that I will be running in the future. I am doing a lot of surface prep and painting. We chose to use the pettit ezpoxy and ezprime system for coating.
I have used the ezprime top coating numerous times and I am impressed with that paint. I have not found an application with this pettit ezprime where I have even found this paint to be usable. In my opinion pettit ezprime takes the hard work of surface prep and makes the job ten times harder and more time consuming. I have followed the instructions for this paint to the letter as recommended by Pettit. I have tried applying the ezprime high build primer in numerous temperatures and humidities, I have tried hand sanding, using electric and air Sanders, and always get the same effect. The pettit ezprime does not apply in a way whereas it can be easily removed, as you'll see in this video.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them, but for now, I am just beyond angry that the amount of time and effort I put into surface prep, was completely ruined and taken back to square one because of the lack of quality of this primer.

Not sure what happened, I just used it for the first time on my boat and was able to sand it without gumming up the sand paper. I used a short nap roller made for epoxy resin and rolled on a thin coat and let it dry for almost 24 hours. I stirred and added the recommended amount of thinner like you did. All the solids settle to the bottom of the can and it takes alot to reblend it back into the primer. I've had this happen on oil base paints when I've put it on too thick and the top dries before the bottom. Probably give it a few days or a week to really cure then try and sand.

It just didn't work as advertised. I know how to paint and know how important properly mixing and conditions are, but several times I had the same result with this primer. The Pettit epoxy is great paint. Just not a fan whatsoever of the primer.

I've never been a ran of pettit products. Interlux is good, total boat high build is very nice and doesnt break the bank.

I called petit and asked them what I was doing wrong. It was all they could do to get me off the telephone. They wanted absolutely no parts of helping me correct this problem, and so heres your public negative review.

I Agree, They Should Have Been More Then Willing To Help🙈

Wet sanding is what I found works when your paper is loading up. I have also had trouble with a longer than advertised dry time with bright side poly paints. Never primer though.

Yeah the only thing I found with the primer is to double or triple the amount of thinner as prescribed on the can. If you use the amount if thinner on the canin this primer, there is no way of getting it to cure properly.

7 teaspoon brushing thinner to 8 oz paint using myrandom orbital sander. thin and then thin it some more , 15% thinner .i did get great results but was by trial and error. used 2 qt to paint a 16 ft runabout just the topside .I sanded the hell out of it 3 times , i ended up using a foam brush instead of the badger hair .

Thanks! All the comments on here people make it sound like I'm crazy and don't know what I'm doing but it sounds like you had a similar experience. If you use the prescribed amounts of thinner on the back of the can, this primer does not work. It doesn't harden properly and becomes unable to be sanded.

I get the SAME issues....drove me crazy and I tried all sorts of variations.....@fishing, did you find a solution?

The ONLY solution I found was to thin the primer WAYYYYYY past manufacturers recommendations- to 50+% then make the primer coat so it is essentially a skim coat. At this point though simply touching it with the 120 grit that is recommended removes the entire coating.

I like Your Video, but i hope you dont mind me giving it a thumbs down👎👎, just because i dont agree, with the product is totally shit... Its got to be the surface you painted on🤔... Because Pettit EZ Prime has been good to me 😇😊 Good Luck Though Bro👑💕👍🏻👍🏻

I appreciate the comment. It wasn't the surface. The problem was that the primer needed to be thinned way more than the directions called for.

I’ve seen that happen with a number of different paints. Oil-based paints don’t sand well after only 24 hours. Did you try sanding ezprime after a few days or a week?

So i tried several things, and always had the same result. The only time I had a different result was when I thinned the primer way past the manufacturers suggestion. Other than that, I have never found a use case for ezprime where it was functional.

@@CharterFishing I've never come across a 1-part oil-based paint that sands easily after 24 hours. When Petit says "24 hours", that's basically the minimum safe point where you can sand, but it's going to make a mess of the sandpaper and that's also true for varnish. If you wait a week after coating, you'll find it sands a little bit more cleanly, but even then it's still pretty soft.

@@CharterFishing I do brightwork professionally (mostly varnish), and the more time you give the finish to breath out the oils, the more easily it sands
